Comparison and playing demo for two legendary Ludwig snare drums. We LOVED messing around with these and they are both amazing instruments that offer iconic sounds. What do you prefer? We'd love to know!

I own both, and love them equally. On the BB I go with a Remo CS Coated Reverse Dot, and the 402 I use the Remo Vintage Emperor Coated. Both drums have the Remo Hazy SS and Fat Cat 30 wires, currently. I tinker with different snare wires a lot, so that could change at anytime, but right now is I'm digging the Fat Cats. You can't go wrong with either drum... There's a reason why both are legendary.

The black beauty sounds like a slightly muffled supraphonic. I prefer supraphonic. Nice open sound.

In my taste I’d go for the black beauty. There warmer and have more residence than the 402. They can cut through the thickest mix and are so versatile!!!!! I think you should go black beauty. If you dampened It just right, it can probably sound like the 402.

I have a Black Beauty and it's a great snare drum, It was given to me by my great friend (the late)Tony Hall of Empire Drums (London)and he told me that Orchestral drummers love these too! All the best

I own the 5" versions of these drums. I converted both of mine to the newer P88 strainer. Much better than the P85! On the bottom head, I tune the 4 lugs that are on the sides of the snare wires loser than the rest of the lugs. The snare beds on Ludwig snare drums aren't as deep as many other drums and I find that this tuning helps to eliminate excessive snare wire buzz.

I have a Ludwig supralite 14 x 6.5 and a friend has a 402 - we played them side by side and couldn't tell the difference! Mind you, my hearing is shit.
