Hi David, I’m 71 and have Vertebral Osteomyelitis which had deteriorated a portion of my spine between T10 and T11. I recently purchased a non-electric Trident Stowaway 26 trike which I also get out on every day for about 1.25 to 1.5 hours in the morning. I do about 11 to 14 miles on my outings. I’m determined to strengthen my core to protect my spine. There has already been a slight shift and change in my posture and don’t want it to get worse. I live in Florida and this time of the year you can sort of depend on nice mornings, when I ride between 8:30 and 10am. The iPhone app is good enough here. Forget about the afternoon. The weather can change in a heartbeat. Anyway, I’m so glad to have found your channel. You are an inspiration to all of us old guys that want to stay healthy and will do it by any means possible. Your editing skills are terrific and I enjoy the music as well. If I can make a suggestion to all trike riders reading this, it is to purchase Bontrager Commuter snap in pedals. They are about $70 and the bike place will install the cleats in your shoes. I got them the first time my foot slipped off the pedal and nearly got sucked under the trike. Looking forward to your next video.

    David,
I've been trying to catch up with those I follow on UA-cam, so I may catch up on a few of yours that I missed. It's good to see you doing well. It sounds funny when you say you are about to start a "maintenance" course of treatment for your cancer. I've never even heard of that before. Good luck with those.
If you don't like to ride in the rain, you would not have liked "TOT" in Kellogg, Idaho this year. We had one day we couldn't ride at all because the rain was fairly hard all day. All the other days we could time our rides with the weather forecasts that were very accurate. It was strange weather for Northern Idaho for June. My friend Brian and I got caught in a downpour on top of Dobson Pass which was more like a bath than a rainstorm. Still, the 20 minute 6 mile coast down the pass was still fun and a little more thrilling because of the slick pavement in the corners. I would hope that you can figure a way to attend next June even if you just fly in for a few days. I'd love to ride with you. Maybe you can fine a doctor that likes to ride trikes and bring "he - she - it" along (politically correct!".
    Be well and stay safe,

Another informative and beautiful presentation MBFAM! I too, am an avid weather watcher for several reasons. But, biking is the main reason now. I was unfamiliar with a couple of the apps you discussed and will be downloading two of those. They look like very functional and applicable apps. Thanks for the reference.
Here in Texas we are getting slammed with hot, hot weather. It has been "hotter than two rats wrestling in a wool sock" (my G-rated version of that). We can't call it a heat wave - waves come and go. We have been stuck in this cycle for a couple weeks now of highs in the 102-104 range and lows in the 80's. This pattern is in the forecast for the next ten days at least. It will probably be for another month or two :-(. Therefore, I am riding my two wheel bike indoors on the trainer (Elite Suito and Rouvy software).
I have been taking the trike out in the late evenings well after the sun has gone down for a short 5 mile ride. It feels good to get out and get some "wind over da skin" after only riding indoors.
I found your comment about meteorologists funny - because it is true. My father was a meteorologist when he passed away. Back in his wx days (70s, 80s, and early 90s) they were more accurate I believe, due to having many more observers and forecasters in service across the country. Now, I believe they have many fewer wx employees and rely on computer models much more heavily. I don't have statistics or facts to bear it out, but I am confident the wx forecasts in the past were more accurate.
You are sure looking and sounding great David and that sure warms all of our hearts! Keep pedaling MBFAM - we deeply appreciate you!

Hello my BFAN! To me, Dark Sky is a very useful app. However, it sounds like you're not seeing much rain so that's probably not a big issue with you. And hopefully the high heat will abate soon.
Perhaps you're right about weather forecasting.I swear, last week we were told it was going to rain every single day and we ended up getting a sprinkle on Friday. And the thing is, they are constantly changing the forecasts up till the last moment. But, nothing we can do about it.
Hope all is well down in TX!

@@DavidRidesaTrike drier than a popcorn fart down here. Praying for some rain. The rain will return eventually and when it does, Dark Sky will be my go to (thanks to you).
I am like you and don't want to get rained on (I am made of sugar and it doesn't bode well). Too many years in the Infantry and being stuck in the rain 24/7. Riding a two wheeler in the rain and paint stripes, railroad tracks, etc... isn't good for anyone's health.

When it is very dry the dust it creates is horrible, than there's the I don't what to call it, but it's like quick sand and your tires sink into it.

Like you, I dislike riding in the rain. I have only one eye and wear glasses, so heavy rain can pose quite a problem.
I use three separate weather apps and am obsessed with weather. My apps appear similar to yours. I plan my rides up to 10 days out and follow the weather very closely. My biggest frustration is, occasionally, my apps don't agree with each other!
Regarding weather. I usually ride early morning or evenings. The direct sun during the day drains my energy so, during the summer at least, I ride before 11:00 am or after 7:00 pm.

Very informative video, David. I hate riding my trike in the rain too, but have been caught in two bad storms lately, 12 miles from my car, when there was supposedly no rain in the forecast. My trail is heavily wooded and there's no place to go for safety, so I just have to keep pedaling as fast as I can. It's scary for me because trees often fall across the trail during storms. I'm going to take a look at the apps you suggested.

    • @DavidRidesaTrike

Hi Susan. Yes, I know how it is with falling branches. A few years ago a woman was killed on a nearby trail when a branch came down during a bad storm. Not sure what she was doing out considering there were lots of warnings that day.
Anyhow,, I'd look into the Dark Sky app. It's VERY effective in predicting rain in the coming hour. And, it will give you warnings like "Heavy rain starting in 12 minutes." I know you said there's no place to take shelter but perhaps still knowing what's coming can help. And a sidenote. I don't know if they still charge for Dark Sky but when I bought it in 2013 it cost $4.99. At the time, I wrestled with paying for an app because there were so many free ones. Then it dawned on me that I will often pay more than that for a cup of coffee and I was being an idiot! I've been very happy with my purchase.

I've had an interest in the weather since I played baseball as a child. I always wanted to know if we would get our game in that evening. I remember in junior high school having a science teacher who taught us all about the weather and fronts. Then when I had my own bass boats, I was always checking the weather. I never wanted to be caught in a thunderstorm while on the water fishing. Graphite rods and Lightning don't mix well. 😮 Now that I've been triking, I check for the same reason as you and usually use the Weather Channel app.
Hope your new chemo regime is easier on you. You remain in my prayers! 🙏🙏🙏

Hi Tom and thanks. Got through treatment #1 today and all went smoothly.
I mentioned to someone else that back in the early 70s I used to ride my bike to get to my summer job while in college and would often also ride from our home on the north side of the city to the lakefront to ride on the Lakeshore Path which is really beautiful. It was about a 30 - 40 mile ride round trip and I never even considered the weather. If it was very cloudy or already raining, I wouldn't go. But I'm sure there were times I got rained on but all I remember from those rides is beautiful riding and watching the girls at all the beaches! 😎

I'm not riding trikes just yet - my balance is getting iffy, so perhaps before too long ... - but yes, I really hate riding in the rain, and frankly, riding in any weather extremes - too cold, too hot, too windy, etc. With the weather as it is in central Texas, where I live, I'm pretty much stuck with extremes when it comes to hot weather. From May through September, hot is the rule, sprinkled with high wind and occasional thunderstorms. I absolutely cannot avoid crappy weather if I want to continue riding. I abhore cold weather even more than hot, but thankfully, cold around here is only about two months long - January/February. Hang in there, and the way my balancing is going, I'll probably be selling my bikes and buying a trike within the next couple of years.

      Hi Curt,
I'm not trying to quicken the worsening of you balance issue, but just know that you'll probably find a trike a lot of fun.
The last couple of years I've done a fair amount of riding in the cold and I'm tolerating it better. The snow is a different issue! But I'd WAY rather ride in extreme heat than extreme cold. And close to 30 years ago I did a one-week 550 mile ride through New England. That was back in my road bike days. We had one day that was just over 90 miles and it rained from start to finish with no let up. It varied from a steady light rain to a downpour. Since that day I have done everything in my power to avoid riding in the rain.

Great video and good luck and best wishes with your new treatment regimen. I hope the side effects are minimal. I am also a “weather nut” as I ride coastal New England and conditions can change dramatically and rapidly. Have to be prepared for all situations. Getting caught in rain isn’t too bad when temp is 75…very different when 40! The Massachusetts Maritime Academy actually has a 24/7 live video feed on UA-cam for weather conditions on CapeCod Canal and areas on the Cape. It is quite helpful. I know how quickly and dramatically the weather can change by you. And I agree about the rain wen the temperature is warm but here, even when it's in the 60s the rain can be pretty cold. And as I mentioned in the video, it's not so much me getting wet, but the trail turning into peanut butter or quicksand depending on how much rain falls. The good thing is, it drains very quickly.

I have mixed feelings about paved vs. unpaved trails. On the one hand, the paved trails are so nice and smooth. On the other, the limestone trail is a little softer and for me, a bit more comfortable. There is a cross street on the trail that is largely completely devoid of traffic and barely has a crack in it. I often turn on to it and go as fast as I can just because it feels good riding that paved road for a little over a mile.

I don't know how or why but I can figure out what the weather is going do. I was out fishing and had been checking the weather conditions and they kept saying the weather was going to be clear but I felt something and decided not to fish no more. So went and loaded the bass boat up and it started drizzling so I decided to just go on home. It started raining, there was a car in front of me doing 30mph and the driver had his sticking out the drivers window and just than the bilge pump turned on and that poor driver was drowned. I felt so bad but it was raining so hard and there no shoulder ( Illinois is good for that) to pull off without probably causing an accident.
Than I and my girlfriend was at the Grand Canyon and again I felt something and told my girlfriend that we needed to leave, that a huge storm was coming. She insisted that it was not going to be that bad. Well, it started to pour and you couldn't see 10 feet in front of you and she was freaky out. I told her if she had listen we would have been ahead of the storm.
Than down at Fort Hood I told them there was a storm coming and the Company Commander said no there's nothing. He wouldn't listen and didn't put his gear up high and when the storm hit his stuff floated away. After that the 1st and C O believe my every word.
