As always THANK you for wading into the much that is Prime Video to find the nuggets. I saw Arrival when it came out, loved it. And Monsters is honestly so good, it really reminds me of movies like "The Road" or "The Last Of Us" series.
And "Freaks" is ABSOLUTELY one that deserves a sequel. Hirsch was outstanding, as was Bruce Dern, it just was awesome. AND I'm old enough to remember the first time "War of the Worlds" came on TV, shortly after seeing the only 2 other 50's sci-fi offerings that could be considered superior, "Forbidden Planets" and "The Day The Earth Stood Still." So glad to see it available again.
Last note: if anyone who follows you hasn't already seen "Everything Everywhere..." they hardly deserve to be following you. JS
Split Second is such a great movie
Yoooo. I love that you included where we can view it. That's going the extra mile. Thank you.
If I recall correctly, Valerian was based on a French comic/graphic novel. They tried to force like 5 of the storylines into the movie. Which is why it seems like it's just all over the place. But it is an absolutely gorgeous movie. Definitely a "watch at least once" kind of movie.
You're right. The comic is a gem btw.
@@realdocloco That's what I heard. I wanna check it out.
The comic is worlds better
@@Rebel084 indeed, it's a classic
I actually recently rewatched it, and was surprised how much more I liked it than the first watch. There's a lot going on, and I think I missed quite a few details the first run through because I was distracted by the visuals.
Ghost in the Shell is an outstanding choice for the top of the list.
Freaks and Coherence are both better
Michael Wincott is a national treasure. Such a great actor, such gravitas, and such PRESENCE.... He is criminally underutilized in the film industry, but that's what makes an appearance by him so special.
Agreed, I totally was pleased surprised to find him in this film.
Seeing him play such a nuanced role was a nice departure from his villains which I also love him as
Bruce Dern ("Freaks") was a "hip" and very popular actor of the Vietnam generation (late 1960s-mid '70s). Always a pleasure to see him. (I'm old).
"The Cowboys" was one of my favorite westerns growing up. He'll always be THAT guy to me. Definitley watch "Nebraska" if you haven't seen it.
Loved him in The Cowboys. That's a classic. Silent Running is good too.
Thanks for giving "Split Second" props. Rutger Hauer is at his most likeable, the film blends detective noir with s.f. and Kim Catrall is in it at her peak. Ir does an excellent job of world-building in the "Blade Runner" mode and Hauer's character is one of my favorite film heroes from the '90's.
Love that movie!
Screamers is absolutely amazing
The first Ghost in the Shell is literally 1 of the best anime movies ever made hands down!!!!!
Git’s is the only movie I have on VHS, DVD and Blu-ray. I also like the 2.0.
Have y'all watched Now and Then, Here and There? Starts off just silly, then goes about as dark as it can. Little bit of hope at the end. Protagonist never gives up. Really odd one.
Ghost in the shell is solid but best anime ever that's a stretch.
I know you're just talking about movies, but in terms of sci-fi TV shows, *Peripheral* was one of my favorite series this year.
Just stumbled upon it after never hearing anything about it, and I was shocked that such a great sci-fi series popped up on Prime with barely any marketing.
My friend was just recently telling me about that show.
I second the recommendation. Excellent science fiction.
Cancelled.
It never went anywhere, around the second half it gets really boring.
@@HankPanky $#!T
I liked it!
This really is truly beautiful. I could close my eyes & almost actually believe this is Chester. Loving this song anyway, this hits..hard.
Found this couple months ago, as many times I’ve listened, comment worthy. Fantastic work!
I'm a regular and don't often comment, but your description of Monsters hit all the magic points: What I mean, is, I already like and have seen almost all of what you have seen, BUT, your description for Monsters caught my attentions I must admit, sometimes I don;t pay attention to the video aspect... but, AND I haven't seen this version of "Monsters" and your description (while oft reused vocabulary) made my brainstem twitch. I know me - that implies something more worthy of a mind-feast! I am excited! Thank you for your sustained presence and performance. And "Coherence" was sincerely an unexpected 10/10.
The Arrival actually holds up, and is still a great movie, with some nice themes.....
The Tomorrow War was supposed to be a big theatrical release, but then Corona happened. Great movie. Very high production values throughout, a complete and serious movie. Also a great movie. If you haven't seen it, that has to be #1 on this list.... The first time I saw it, I was shocked.... This is on Prime?? For free??? What???? It's waaaay too good to be on Prime for free, as a new release....
I still remember the arrival, the whole terraforming complex was haunting and well executed.
Problem for me is I read the book. If you haven't, it's about a soldier traveling through time (time travel is the 'gimic') so that they can keep fighting the enemy with better and better weapons. Of course by doing that, they still end up being defeated as it's pointless but they refuse to back down. It ends with them still fighting and getting nowhere. The reality is (book wise) it's a metaphor for the Vietnam war as it was written by an ex-combat soldier about the grind of war and the frustration of it. It's a beautiful read but I suspect that the movie is not what I described.
@@JackKirbyFan this sounds more like Edge of Tomorrow with Tom Cruise.
Another great list. Darren Van Dam (Van Damme) has saved me so much time with his best of lists. More than half the time I go to streaming services without a plan I end up browsing for an hour or so then giving up in frustration. Thanks.
Shoutout for Screamers. Love that movie.
Thanks for the list! I remember watching Ghost in the Shell for the third or fourth time (about 20 years ago) and finding things out about the plot that I'd overlooked on my previous times watching it, both in dialogues and in images. It's so full of hints and winks. The story is great, and when it came out, the animation quality was top notch. And it still is! ♥
I enjoy the animated version AND the live action version of Ghost in the Shell. It is unusually intelligent and well-paced.
Yeah I expected a crapfest from that movie, came out of the cinema pretty happy. The whole movie felt like a love letter for the old. More for the actual fans than the regular movie goer? I just remember being so ready to hate on the movie, but came out just happy about it, and rewatched all the "older" GiTS after.
Love movies based on putting a brain in a robot body. I remember a creepy movie where a father put his recently killed son in a robot body. Being done in the 50s, it had the look and feel with all that old science equipment. If interested, it's The Colossus of New York from 1958.
I remember watching it SUB'd. When the DUB came out I watched it with the subtitles on along with other anime and realised you NEED both to get all the nuances they remove in DUB.
@@Myrddraalfade really? lucky me, I always watched subbed.
Coherence is in my opinion one of the most underrated movies of the past decade. I urge people to make it through the mildly confusing start because the payoff is 💯 worth it.
Coherence is a must-watch on this list. I love the way the story unfolds. Time for a rewatch!
I agree. I was floored when I watched it, thinking it was some mediocre movie, but it's one of the best sci-fi movies I've ever watched, with how put together the story, dialogue, and characters were with so little??? It reminded me that sci-fi doesn't have to be big effects to be effective, it can just be a concept, executed well. Sucks that people barely talk about it. Kind of like Chronicle, in a sense.
@@joyc.e.7511 ya man I went into it 100% blind and couldn't have been more impressed.
I think you had the series "The Lazarus Project" on the brain when you were talking about the film "The Lazarus Effect". I was wearing my almost 25 year old GitS tee shirt just a few days ago...great choice at #1!
I'm a sci fi nut, everyone in my family are sci fi nuts and we ALL think The Tomorrow War was excellent. The stairwell scene and the scene of the aliens running down the street will give you goose bumps!
Monsters is such an underrated movie that in fact in my humble opinion one of the noughties (it was made in that decade but released in 2010).
I saw Valerian in 3D. It was sooo much more in 3D
Valerian has to be one of the most criminally under-rated flicks of all time.
Indeed !
In matter of science-fiction, it is an impressive realisation !
You threw some great ones in here; Turbo kid, Split second, etc- & then #1… GITS….kudos to you sir. This movie has remained in my top list since I first discovered it in ‘96-97. Almost 30 years later & still seems so relevant! & the music?? Perfect
Coherence is ALWAYS a must see. I easily watch it once a year. Love it
Thank you SO much for listing La Femme Nikita early in the list of Luc Besson's films.
Thanks for the list, Darren, I like how you get this many movies reviewed in such a short time.
Great list, scifi is my favorite genre, "Nope" is a modern classic for sure. "Screamers" is a hidden gem! "The Tomorrow War" was pretty good. "Turbo Kid" and "EEAAO" are fan-freakin'-tastic, hahaha!
Thank you for putting these lists together they are so helpful and cuts down the channel surfing …..😎
Good stuff. The 2004 "Primer" you didnt mention is another cool one that no one really knows about.
Only the best time travel movie ever made
Gotta luv Buckaroo Banzai / Robocop in anything. Screamers is excellent. He was excellent in The Last Ship also.
If you didn't see his appearance in Guiellrmo Del Torro's Cabinet of Curiosities on Netflix... you need to. Episode is titled "The Viewing" and it's from the same director as "Mandy" and "Beyond the Black Rainbow".
Did not. Thanks for the recco. Watched Obliterated on Netflix. Lots of social entering, to many twisted sexual things in it, but overall, a decent story. The actor, Nate, I think, was the whole show. BTW. Luv your shirts, but need a pocket for us old ducks' glasses.
That's one of several ways to demonstrate your nerd cred: knowing what is an oscillation overthruster!
Arrival would have been my number 1 pick.
I would love to see more Valarian and Loralee. That movie was Wow.
There’s some real gems… thanks Darren ❤
Love your pics, keep them coming!
Split Second was always a favorite of mine- especially when I first saw it back in high school when it came out. I bought my first pair of round sunglasses because of Rutger Hauer’s in the movie 😆
The Live action version of Ghost in the shell is excellent and really underrated. It got criticism for SJ being the lead but she is excellent. One of the best Animation adaptations. That's an idea for another list.
Monsters is by far the best Sci Fi movie I've seen in the past 10+ years.
Just watch it. The story is riveting and the effects are perfect.
It has it's problems. Amazing ending though!
Absolutely positively conclusively the best Anime movie of all time, at number 1. Kudos, couldn't agree more.
Great selection. I've watched all of them and couldn't agree more
Great list. One thing to mention. Valerian has one of the most iconic intros of all times. And I mean "apocalypse now"-level. You will never ever again listen to space oddity and not see these pictures!
Valerian the City of a Thousand planets is one of the most epic visual eye candy you can ever watch. I recommend seeing it in 4K as large of a screen as possible. Luc is one of my favorite directors, most of his movies have great emotional journeys that end with the reminder that love is the answer to the meaning of life.
I remember Valerian as a kid, from Heavy Metal magazine, great stuff!
So happy you mentioned the SNL skit.
I saw it before the movie.😆
Coherence is so good. Way better than expected
Excellent FLICK CONNECTION Darren. War Of The Worlds is a favourite of mine, considering the age of the film, the special effects were ground-breaking. Also highly recommend The Dead Zone. Love this film. Many thanks for sharing with us. Really appreciate the time you spent on the reviews 👍👍👍
Thanks for doing all the hard work searching for gems to watch. Added a few to my watchlist.
Totally agree on GITS being #1 - superb story that I wish the live action remake of 2017 had followed too, but sadly it didn’t. Wonderful to see the original War of the Worlds in there too - just an excellent feeling that goes with that film, whereas the 2005 remake felt a bit flat, but the tripod effect as it climbed out of the road and split the building was a breathtaking sequence! Yep a good collection you’ve put together and will check out ‘NOPE’. Thanks!
Coherence absolutely terrified me. It's superb!
Thank you, Split Second is to this day been one of my favorite movies ever since it came out.
Valerian is such an underrated movie!
Highly recommend "Monsters," "Freaks" and "Nope." Though it's not as great as "Get Out" (by the same director), "Nope" is still very very good. Worth renting. "Freaks" is in my top 15 for the Twenty-Teens decade. "Monsters" is well worth the ride, the little movie that you don't think can, but it does.
The way you were describing the Anime (and knowing it's on Prime) I knew instantly before you said it. One of my favorites.
I have both "Split Second" and "War of the Worlds" on DVD. While only available to rent another great SF movie is Kurt Russell's 1998 "Soldier" (which I also have on DVD).
I had forgotten about Soldier, I loved it!
Man, you’re awesome. I love the tips about the movies.❤❤
Valerian is on of the most underrated films to date. Period! Look at the movie on a 75” or larger OLED screen, QD-OLED preferably, and you will absolutely be amazed!
I really liked Valerian as I have a thing for female heroins. I think Cara Delevingne did a great job conveying a socially awkward militant agent (you can keep your james bonds) and would love to see more of her. Sadly she has stuck to less action oriented roles.
Everything Everywhere all at Once is sublime storytelling and an amazing movie.
thanks for putting the title up on top because i scroll thru the video directly to it...
Hells yeah to Nope! And I agree with you about Everything... excellent flick, but very strange, especially the fight scene with the things with the things (IYKYK) 😄
Mery Shelly's Frankenstein is not about bring some back to life, it is about creating life and the ethics of science. Frankenstein's monster is a totally new being, bring up even more ethical questions about responsibility to a life you create
I just finished watching your video. It’s now March 26 and I’ve seen one of these movies except for one that’s unbelievable.
Turbo Kid is so great
Ive watched half of these and man all killer picks by you thankyou
God, I really enjoy these videos. You have become my chief Movie review tube. Keep up the good work!
"Man With The Screaming Brain" looks hilarious, thank you for the list!
Excellent recommendations in this list. I really enjoyed Freaks and I too hope there's a sequel. I just about died when you included the SNL skit with Walken, too funny. 🤣
Thanks for continuing to bring me great flicks.
I think i could watch NOPE a zillion times, i loved it, the monster was unique and the characters were so well developed, i love it
Of Course Ghost In The Shell is number one, and rightfully so. I would put EEAAO over Nope, because it totally blew me away when it came out and still does (one of those movies you can easily watch several times and still discover new things with every watch), but that's just imho. The rest of your list I have seen maybe two thirds of, so there are some recommendations I will have to check out.
Ghost in the Shell is a timeless classic masterpiece, whether or not you like Anime, as Masamune Shirow has his own take on the genre, creating entire worlds and characters in his own particular style. If you are still unsure, just watch the opening credits scene, which is a masterpiece on its own right, leaving its mark in the movie industry. I believe this was one of the most influential sci-fi movies of its time, with visuals that were unbelievable for the time it was made, and a philosophical story that will give you a lot to think about.
Thanks for creating this video. Only 3 movies of this list are available here in The Netherlands on Amazon Prime though unfortunately.
I am a connoisseur of horror, I love it so much. Lately I have been thinking its time to move away from the horror category and your list is my first foray, thanks.
SPLIT SECOND looks great, I have to see this tonight
I rate Screamers and The Tomorrow War with Ghost in the Shell as top 3 in that list. Screamers still holds up well.
Screamers is a classic.
I agree with only three of your choices, The first is Screamers. the adaption of this short story to a full length film is not only accurate, but also entertaining and gripping..
The Second is Valerian. I have the pleasure of reading ALL of the original graphic novels including the one that the movie is based on. My only major complaint was that in the graphic novels, the male protagonist was much older; sort og the senior member of the diplomat / trouble shooting team. The female member on the other hand is the younger, more capable member of the team who is deeply infatuated to her senior partner; almost a father figure complex as a matter of fact on her part. The movie decided to change this making the male member as young as his female counterpart, perhaps to avoid any ackward notions among the audience. On the other hand, the female proyagonist is no longer noticeably shorter - almost petite - than her senior. In addition in the graphic novel, the girl has a darker skin tone and some Asian features while the movie decides to make her classic beauty caucasian.
The third is, of course, Ghost in the Shell. I am a fan of anime and manga. My only complaint with the movie is the absence of the manga author's trademark humor and sarcasm that was a fine counterpoint to the hard edge of the cybernetic setting. Still the animated movie is veyr good. can't say the same for the live version where I have a lot of issues about the casting choices The actress chosen to play Kusanagi is too short, and thus ends up looking stout, rather than svelt. her subordinate, Batou is physically too comically bulky in the live action version. And their boss whi , in the manga, is short, drarfish, but slimly built ... the live action movie gets that completely wrong. i did not like the live action movie at all.
The Arrival is one of my fav's from it's first release. I thought it was very well put together. I watched Screamers when it was first released. A Peter Weller favorite of mine. When I watch reviewer checking out the newer War of The Worlds I always tell the to check out that first one. Oh yeah.
I'm going to be checking out this list. I'm always looking for new sci-fi.
As we say in Texas; y'all be safe.
This is just what I was looking for, there doesn't usually seem to be an emphasis on sci-fi availability on streaming. I actually haven't seen some of these yet.
Screamer’s wow one of my favourite movies back in the day x bet it’s not available in Britain!! Just like I’m not gonna get a T-Shirt delivered for Christmas hehe !! Only joking but I will be enquiring about one in the new year!! Enjoyed your work this year if things improve in the next I’ll try send you some appreciation!! If not know that I appreciate you!!! Happy Christmas & have a merry new year
Thanks for another great list, Darren! Freaks is a really good one that many might have missed.
I loved Rutger Hauer as a character actor. “Blood of Heroes” is one of my all time favorites, “Lady Hawke” is awesome, and “Blind Fury” was great. Lots of great movies with him.
18:52 - Good to have VALERIAN in this list. Fun if flawed...
Freaks is hugely underrated. My top recommended on this list. Loved it.
Hey Now Darren! Thanks again for doing all the dirty work for us!
Wow brother!!! Ghost in the shell in the number one spot, 100% agreed with that, congrats
It’s amazing how few good movies are now included with Prime membership. Many on this list are not included. Robot and Frank is with Frank Langella (lan-gel-ah) btw. Thanks for your show. The Arrival holds up imo. War of the World. Lots of the older flicks on this list do. Thanks!
☆ Love it when you do Sci-fi moies!!! Thank you for sharing with us fans!!!
Hey...thankyou for listing what is available in my country...Australia.
You reminded me of The Dead Zone the series which is supposed to be playing on Tubi. I think i will watch that while i work today
I've been waiting for a "Freaks" sequel. Very good flick!
Freaks is so good. I stumbled on it a year or so after it came out. I went in blind, which is the VERY best way to watch it. This movie has stuck with me since then, thats 5 years or so. I don't know how many movies I've watched and forgotten in that time, but this one stuck with me.
the Lazarus effect IS DOPE dark movie crazy
Lets face it a lot of people hate on the Tomorrow War simply because they hate Chris Pratt for religious and political reasons, not because the movie is not good, he could be in the equivalent of Citizen Kane and they would still hate on it.
Monsters is a great movie, but it is not about invading monsters, it is about an encroaching alien ecosystem. Humans fighting it causes most of the damage. Also, the beginning is the end, look carefully frame by frame at the beginning and match up the radio chatter. Completely changes the story, that's all I will say.
Liked many of the choices, but sorely disappointed that The Man From Earth didn't occur on the list at all when it should have been in the top 3. Okay, yeah, Ghost in the Shell probably should be number 1, but Man From Earth should be close behind. It is an amazing story, made on a shoestring and is captivating. Mostly set in one room with one person posing an incredible possibility that becomes more real as the afternoon continues. Must see!
Fun fact, that weirdly textured wall in Infinity Chamber is made of re-purposed 2-liter pop bottle holders like the ones used by pepsi and coke distributors.
Your channel is great. Impossible to find good flicks to watch on all these streaming services. Your recommendations are awesome. Never heard of The Arrival and it was a pretty decent movie. Always taking notes when I watch your channel for good stuff to watch.
Have seen most of these, so I can confirm: the list is solid AF. Bonus points for Screamers and The Dead Zone!
I have watched Ghost in the Shell countless times, some of those times were just so that I could be immersed in the soundtrack by Kenji Kawaii, it is absolutely gorgeous.
Split Second is awesome
Ghost in the Shell and Nope are both great! I will probably rewatch them this week.
Interesting to note in ‘Split Second’ that the font used for the underground station sign isn’t correct, possibly due to copyright problems (London Transport own the rights to the font).
Great number1 pic!!!!!!
I have loved that movie for a long time.
