Im starting my 4th week of antidepressant free, I’ve taken them since 1986. At week 2 I stopped gambling. I recovered from cocaine through a 28 day inpatient program in 1991. It’s been a long road and I feel better today than I’ve felt for a very long time. I’ve had to let go of the past to fill the hole. Thank you for your video.

Psychedelics saved me from years of uncontrollable depression, anxiety, smoking, and illicit pills addiction. Imagine carving heavy chains for over a decade and then all of a sudden that burden is gone. Believe it or not, in a couple of years they'll be all over for treatment of mental health related issues.

Very interesting, doctor! I have started ketamine infusions for TRD and when you talk about being "stuck"... You nailed it! I kept telling my doctor (who is amazing!) that I felt like there was something invisible keeping me stuck or blocked. I knew intellectually to make changes but something kept me from making progress.
I didn't have high hopes for ketamine because I've tried so many other things but it has been remarkable for me. After a particularly rough session I woke up the next day and felt like something had shifted in my brain.
It is not a miracle drug but it has helped me to get "unstuck". I'm also in the SF Bay area and I feel like we are particularly lucky in this area; we have a lot of great, forward thinking medical professionals like yourself. Really appreciate the great content!

I hope that medical science finds a drug that deals with chronic pain without the dangers of addiction, or even physical dependence. I am one of them.

Yeah, the pharmaceutical industry really screwed a lot of people over with this. Mass population gets put on huge amounts of opioids and then 10-15 years later, BAM! Take em off! They’re the reason for the huge increase in Heroin addiction and the newest opioid epidemic. A lot of people have died simply bc of this practice of that whole community. And there’s no way they didn’t know how addictive this stuff was when it was being prescribed. I mean, they’re pharmaceutical companies.. they just didn’t care

I have been seriously considering speaking to someone about ketamine therapy. I have major depressive disorder, ptsd and generalized anxiety disorder. I spent nearly a year in a hospital bed and was told by my doctor that I had days to weeks left of life. This was 12 years ago. I was actively dying and did technically die twice during that period. I made a promise that I wasn't going to give up and let my illness beat me without the fight of my life. But that fight was facing my death repeatedly, 24/7 for months. I am still here against all odds - my disease had a less than 30% chance of survival, but when everything else became factored in, I was probably single digits to fractional odds of survival. All that constant fight left me dependent on opiates for 7 years (pain specialists said that the amount I was receiving would kill most people and stopping could lead to significant risk of death considering my health issues) and I decided I had enough and stopped. Then the preexisting depression and anxiety became so severe I couldn't leave my home. I vividly relive that trauma so frequently and I had sought help with little success. Ketamine therapy sounds like something that might help me to find the way to move past the trauma and get unstuck.

Yes, I’m sure I have nerve issues. I have three autoimmune disorders: Fibromyalgia, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and Lymphocytic Colitis. I won’t even bother listing everything. It took about a year of constant diarrhea and not being able to eat or drink anything without it going straight through me, that includes IV fluids, before I got the diagnosis of the colitis. Even longer before I got any effective control. I’ve been practically bedridden for almost 5 years now. I’m working on setting up a space where I can try to do chair yoga and/or chair tai chi. My family and my service dog are my lifelines. I’m not expecting miracle cures at this point. Any improvements I can manage, though, are very welcome. It used to be that users were attracted to specific drugs. Coke, Opiates, etc. The majority of users would stick to what they like. I don't know what made a certain drug the preferred substance. I am talking about 80's and 90's. Sometimes people would do speedballs. Coke and Heroin. But typically it was a single drug. Nowadays people are doing everything they can get their hands on. At least in my limited observations. If you were to offer something to someone at a party or user environment of some type. People would pass on substances and state that they only used a specific one. Nowadays, you could sell people horse manure as long as you told them it would get them high. Because they don't seem to care.

I suffer adult ADHD and had horrendous sleeping problems in my younger years.
'ceiling shift', watching the ceiling till early in the morning. Tossing and rolling.
Cannabis helped but is a not a long term solution IMO. I do have some in the house for 'emergencies' but TBH only use it once a year or so.
Structuring my sleeping rituals helped. Giving thought processes a place helped (writing ideas down. Make a to do list. Start every week and day with checking my agenda items. Not only work, even things like 'make music' is an agenda item. Letting go of anxiety and fear of forgetting stuff is a long road when you have beaten yourself up so many times over being forgetful in younger years. And the judgement of others about that as well.
Accept you will plan your time inefficiently from time to time and learn which items can be skipped without a feeling of dread.
And most importantly, inform those around you how you need your structure for you to function. People are very understanding in my experience. Some colleagues who would be annoyed by me in the past now give me a friendly nudge when they think I might forget an item. More often than not I can say 'I'm on it' nowadays. Makes myself proud and given the smiles I often get, my colleagues as well.
TLDR: you need to structure yourself in such a way you optimise positive feedback loops in yourself

Most doctors have very little expertise when it comes to drug use and application, really.
They know some of the mechanisms and what it's advertised uses are, that's about the limits of their understanding 90% of the time.
They also tend to have the same philosophy in drug development that led to morphine being heralded as an alcoholism cure, then heroin's creation as a cure for morphine addiction. Now they believe their error was simply that pleasurable effects can lead to addiction, and will prioritize lack of narcotic effect over efficacy and safety.

When I started smoking weed in the 1980s, as a teenager, I educated myself about drugs. We also learned some safety stuff in health class.
I knew this when I was 16. You have to be mindful of mixing drugs. You can't just roll the dice with a hand full of random pills. That's a quick way to die.
For example, never mix alcohol and muscle relaxers. People go to sleep and never wake up all the time after mixing those two.
I thought this was common sense, but obviously not.
Beyond a heart stopping cocktail, you need to be aware of and willing to encounter the possible side effects or even long-term permanent effects that a drug or a mix of drugs might cause, before you take it.
Never take a random drug just for kicks. Only take a drug if you have a desire to experience some specific sensation that the drug can provide, simulate or synthesize. Like, don't shroom unless you want to expand your mind, reflect on things, etc. Smoke weed to relax. Drink alcohol to get stupid and sloppy and feel wrecked the next day. Etc.

You make so much sense! I worked in drug and alcohol detox and rehab for 6 years starting in 1999 as a RN. I knew some of this but, I learned a lot too! I am always struggling with insomnia and since they quit giving benzos which made me lose my restoril 7 years ago I have struggled. I know I ruminate over many traumas I have gone through. The last one being losing my 27yo son to a fentanyl od last June. I feel like I'll never get to sleep normally again!

If you have a patient with a terminal illness who still has medically decent quality of life what would you tell that person if they knowingly wanted to take drugs to get the euphoric feeling as much as possible? Say this person is medically still going ok, living independently for the most part but is pretty much bound to being home due to their condition. Their family sees them as a burden. They are alone. They have suffered with depression for 40 years and tried a laundry list of prescription drugs that either did nothing or they made the problems worse. The ONLY thing that ever gave them a break from crushing depression was opioids. They never abused them and only took as directed the few times they were prescribed for various reasons over the years. Would it be ok to prescribe them out of compassion to try and make the end of their life better?

I used to date a Doctor Who owned a chain of pain management clinics, and the way he saw it was that he was there to alleviate suffering, if patients were being responsible and safe and he could alleviate their suffering regardless if the pain is physical or mental, he wanted to do that.

    • @Meow4B
      @Meow4B 8 місяців тому

But also I was accused of having treatment resistant depression because all I was ever offered were serotonin medications. Turns out I actually have ADHD so my brain was lacking dopamine not serotonin. Once I accepted that and tried medication for ADHD instantly that day the “depression” lifted because I was never actually depressed. Just chronically overwhelmed and distracted. I cried for all the years I suffered unnecessarily, my psychiatrist was delighted when the following week I went back gushing about how well Adderall worked for me. There was no nonsense of taking something that made me sicker for six weeks just to see if it would eventually help only to find out it didn’t just to start taking something else that made me feel sicker for six weeks just to find out it didn’t.

People with festering wounds, and missing limbs. The smell on public transportation is terrible when the poor souls are traveling. Double edged sword. I wonder if you could make a video explaining how hard it is to just drop a drug you are addicted to? Because my mother has decided that I decided to go crazy on opiates. Not understanding there are very good reasons why, like withdrawal, also, and the whole it fixes and the desperate attempt to fill that void. Are we bad people? I’m just asking because I wanted my mother to understand what I went through. I have been recovered for almost 10 years, but it took 15 years of my life away. And now that I’m back living with her, there are no drugs and no drinking, and I am being treated like I’m back on them again, maybe someday this will be a very good video to make. You are a wonderful and honest man. the way you speak might just make a difference in how everyone sees me. They just can’t get it out of their head that I chose to do opiates. I chose it every single time. It’s very frustrating and I thank you so very much for your videos. They’re wonderful.❤

I use Kratom daily. I have for years and it's helped me immensely. I have widespread chronic muscle aches throughout my body, scoliosis, degenerative disc disorder, spinal stenosis and arthritis. I was diagnosed with fibromyalgia and have had a bi level spinal fusion c4, c5 and c6. Several years ago, my gp decided that I really "shouldn't hurt that bad" and stopped filling my opioid pain medication I'd been on for the last 3 yrs. They decided I shouldn't be in that much pain and that was that. They didn't care. I was unprepared for the withdrawal, which was a nightmare that I never want to repeat. I learned about Kratom and gave it a try. Not only does it ease the pain but it lifted me out of the depression I had been experiencing . Days that I considered ending it all. (Depression caused mainly by the unrelenting pain I was in.) It really helped me. Not 100% pain free but a lot better than before. My condition has only gotten worsen as I've gotten older. I'll be 60 soon. I never thought about potential contaminations. I guess I'll take my chances. I'd rather be dead then bed bound, depressed and in constant pain.
