Killer demo of the VOX ToneLab LE modeling floor processor featuring Austin, TX guitarist David Spann. Wow. Killer playing, great sounds, cool gear. And it's all recorded direct!
I was in the studio when this was filmed. It was all recorded in one take... the backing track was played into one channel while David played along to it. It all went down live and we just took a direct line out of the TonelabLE. Amazing.
Superior !? Not today but 15 years ago it was for sure. Today we have Headrush pedal board, line ⁶ helix, Neural and Kemper just to name a few of the big dogs ! I had the Vox biggest pedal board and or was great but today the only thing that sounded good to me was the greatest Headrush pedal board and I got it way cheap before the COVID Nwo price hike.
@@auntjenifer7774 Nah, this thing still provides some of the crispiest tones without sounding extremely digital. I've had some people be shocked at how good mine sounds.
First, great sounding gear Vox. ...and...I hope that guitarist has more gigs and work offered than he can ever do. He is just freaking amazing. He just does Eric Johnson and EVH at will. This video made me happy.
Hey guys, Just wanted to respond to the debte over whether the SE or LE sounds better, here are a couple things to consider. The LE is 24 bit...the SE is 20 bit. Also, the SE is now discontinued in the US. So, if you love that unit, get one while you can. Other than that, the LE is really no different in terms of sound engine (and quality) compared to the SE...in fact, the expanded line out features make it more customizable when interfacing with amps or live PA's.
Hello! One of the cool new features of the TonelabLE is expanded amp/line out features. Of note, it has three different amp out modes voiced for use with VOX, "Black 2x12" type combos, and "UK Stack" amps. You can either use one of those modes to match the TonelabLE to an amp from those three major brands OR you can bypass the TonelabLE's amp modeling all together if you'd just like to use all its effects with your favorite amp of choice.
I went ahead & got one. I played it live twice already using the factory presets (after only 2 practices). I can't wait to start tweaking, & I'm going into a tweed blues Jr. Love it so far!!
Keep in mind this is recorded direct into a mini-mixer and then into a video camera, then compressed on UA-cam. There's a modeled live console EQ you can access to fatten the unit up as much as you care to. It's a big plus that the previous Tonelabs didn't have.
Just got my tonelab l.e. last week and its great! Gonna pair it up w/my Vox VT120+, Keeley Memphis Sun, and Mesa Boogie V2 and do some trials. See what i come up with.
had one for about 15 years, overall I like it, they could do a better job on the push buttons. I'm always taking it apart to fix them but other than that it's a great little preamp.
Not mentioned on this video is the free software that connects to the LE. This allows you to tweak everything so much more easily than on the unit itself. Also forget the presets - you can get so much better sounds out of the LE yourself.
Luv you, David! I mean I dig your style. Way cool ... and on top you even got a real Chandler axe. You keep me wowing endlessly. Hope to meet you in the flesh one day. Greetings from a German fan.
Thanks for posting this. I've read all the reviews, but seeing is believing. I'm contemplating either upgrading my pedals but this is definately more bang for the buck. Heck, just the pedal board, a Boss gigadelay & Digitech Brian May pedal is nearly $600, & that's what I've been looking at. This might have sealed the deal.
@MrJackanthony Thanks for asking, if you change from a program with the same delay type...say "stereo delay" to another program with "stereo delay" the effect spills over to next program. Changing between programs with same ambient FX, no cut-off. More details in manual.
@gummyform Pretty close, you do plug your guitar chord from you guitar to the unit, but after that you need speakers of some sort. The best thing to use, i have found, is a keyboard amp with the treble and bass set evenly - that way, you are only getting the sound of the effect unit. You can, however, plug a pair of headphones if you just want to practice.
@Hertsman50 I agree. Having used a variety of amps and processed amp boards, i'm more inclined to go with a very simple Fender Twin, a few pedals, and that's about it. I did, however, get this to sound decently by going into a keyboard amp and turning the VR down to about 2 - 3.5 on most of the saved settings. But yeah, an actual tube amp is the way to go, in my opinion.
I DO think that there's a wider variety effects on the GT-10. Typo. My bad. If you gig with a band or have a proper loop pedal, I'd say that the higher sound quality on the ToneLab LE gives it the edge. If you're into goofing off in your bedroom more, like me, the looper and wider selection of effects is pretty important. I like that you can assign most of the effects to the expression pedal on the ToneLab. The best is when you are fingerpicking an arpeggio and suddenly reverb swells in.
@UKToneKing Ok, you made me watch the video again so as to point out something that even a beginner would have picked up on. 2:37 to 2:40 - he taps a bit, noobishly, then jumps further up the neck about 7 halftones into an alternate picking motion and slips to the 8th halftone by mistake, then goes back to the right one. He doesn't play with his fingers, he plays the guitar with his arms. His hands look very tense, his movement looks very indecisive. Reminds me of myself 10 years ago.
Other possibles pedalboards are: - Zoom g9.2tt (great distorsion... a bit plastic sound on my opinion...) - Pod x3 live (ok great sound for guitar effect. nothing to mention. but there are a lot of functions that i will never use (like bass & voice effects... amp & cab simultors and much more... maybe is to expansive for my way of using it). - GT-10 i try it... dist sounds are to noisy! like a bee... zzz but great ambient effects. Thanks for any opinion. Giovanni
I have played one of these. It really is a great product, but I struggled to get a BM tone I could stand. If you want BM tone I would go with a tube amp, and a Treble boost over anything modeling. I was more satisfied with a Epiphone Valve Junior and a Treble boost than anything I found on this. The good thing about this is ALL (and I mean ALL) the other great tones you can get out of it.
@deadringer13 i tested it in the music shop, just pluged in the headphones and the sound was perfect. preamp does it's work perfectly. you don't need a head. headphones or speakers.
It explains in the writeup at the top right of the page that "it was recorded directly" without an amp... for direct recording its not bad and with a good tube amp it should sound a whole lot better.. I think the company wanted to show off its sound recprded directly into a recorder without a mike or an amp.
It definitely seems decent, but did Vox (and Marshall) only try participating in the modeling vogue from 15-20 years ago because Fender began participating first?
YES ! Is the Fucking Great Rack !!! I buying this Rack for five days now ! Very nice sound'S and very intuitive fonctions !!! Thank'S VOX Compagnies LTD .
I own one of these pedals; There fantastic. If any one is looking into buying one, get it. Its worth your money. It sounds really good on a Fender Hotrod Deville too.
Tonelab wins hands down. The ME-50 is old tech. Modeling has gotten a lot better over the years. I don't know how effective the tube is in the Tonelab but, I know that the Tonelabs sound amazing. Plenty better than anything I've heard from Line 6 with the exception of metal tones.
I take it you mean the SE as opposed to the update; the LE. They're both Tonelab. I agree it sounds amazing; I love mine, but I'm still curious about the LE. It has some new features; the dropped a few and added a few. Best to have them both, if money isn't a problem!
i have one, i love it. the worst thing about it is that you cant use the clyde mccoy wah at the same time as using any of the other pedal models, i think this was a big mistake on vox's behalf. the wah should be a seperate part. but unfortunately its not.
I think your playing was killer, and the unit sounds great. I love my SE, and may have to upgrade eventually. Just depends on whether there's a noticable improvement in the sounds; it's kind of hard to imagine, since my toy has such killer sounds.
Imho you should. Of course you can wreck your sound with a crap guitar, or a crap amp, but whatever you've got will sound better with one of these. Keep in mind this guy's going direct! Fusion guitar virtuoso Hugh Ferguson recorded a whole cd straight into his computer using the SE (the earlier generation of the LE), and it sounds fantastic. I use the SE with my Blues Junior (Fender practice amp), and it kicks ass. I've played with a loud drummer and three screaming saxes; no problem.
Well i would! The fact of NOT having to lug around 2 godheavy ac30's (for stereo sound) AND all the fx pedals, the maintenance, the mic setup headaches etc... But of course having said that, if the the pedal does NOT faithfully reproduce good vox tone(which this tonelab obviously does not) then I'll just keep on lugging around my 2 beasts till my back gives out one day!!
You can tell at the beginning the pick attack is something that you wont get in a Line 6. Some of the "heavy" sounds remind me of the Johnson J-Station which to me was better than Line 6 for "faking" sounds. The line 6 jazz clean was better than the Johnson though. I'm sure with all the tweaking I've done on J and 6 that I can get this to work for me just fine.
Solo usa un power amp de valvulas para eso. Marshall hace uno, y Carvin tambien. Solo conectalo a un gabinete, y ya esta. He visto el POD XT conectado asi y suena bien.
I know about the 20 vs 24 bit processing; I know you're biased, but have you A-B tested them, and if so, is there a noticeable difference to your ears? Great playing btw.
I'm curiuos; have you compared the LE to the SE? I'm kind of partial to the two expression pedals in my SE, but I may have to upgrade if the sounds are much better; plus I like the smaller footprint.
I’ve been playing guitar for 48 years - many professionally. I have no connection with Vox. I’ve owned all kinds of gear. You CAN get some very good sounds from the ToneLab LE by building your own presets. Few of the factory presets are usable. Use a clean amp (such as a Fender Twin, Deluxe or a Jazz Chorus). If you A-B ToneLab sounds with the originals, many are surprisingly close especially the Uni-Vibe. Listen to the sounds INDIVIDUALLY to appreciate them fully.
@jooman77 As has been pointed out in a previous post David has toured world wide and has opened for Stevie Ray Vaughn, Al DiMeola, Robin Trower, Yngwie Malmsteen, Johnny Winter, Pat Travers, BB King, Los Lonely Boys, Jon Schofield, Roy Buchanan. Eric Johnson seems to think that Mr. Spann is "alright". Where do you stand against him. You've got a handy cam, you can post a vid.
I used to own the ME50 and I currently own the Tonelab.. In my opinion the tonelab is better for many reasons, but the main reason for me is that the Boss has a very noticeable pause when sitching between patches.. the Tonelab being newer and advanced technology, does have a pause but it is so slight you cant notice it. Another reason is that the OD/DS on the tonelab completely kill the ME50!! VOX ALL THE WAY
I was wondering .... i have an Ibanez Jem, and i am loking forward to buy a multieffects proccesor.. and i stepped by this tonelab, will it give me a good metal sound with reverb and delay?? Can i bring out Vai's sound from this??? or Would i be able to have a blues sound??? Please answer me as soon as possible....
@UKToneKing Got it. I will now proceed to pinpoint the part in which he sucks. It's the one between 0:00 and 6:43. You can't miss it. I sat through the whole clip for two reasons: 1. I was interested in what the unit sounds like and I figgured I would learn a lot more about its FX and tones by watching the the entire demo and 2. musicians that suck this bad intrigue me. one ting i dont like with this pedal is that- if u use the control button u can only turn on one effect at a time, u can not use control to turn delay and modulation of or vice versa,my boss gt models were good for that,
I'm looking at all those haha i have the same question, i mean this one is the cheapest in price but i like the digitech because it a loop station which i guess this also does so maybe get the vox
@freedomsoldier187 You could try the easy way,.. Use two headsets at the same time, Left ear = guitar, right ear = backing track, or the other way. This is how I do it, and it's working pretty well :P
If I were to use an amp, what do you recommend? I heard tech 21 trademark is the perfect for this. Any one you know that will not color the LE's sound.
@TheHornet79 I'm going through the same thing dude. lol i feel this pedal has deffinately got more "life" to it. but thats just from what i hear. tone is entirely up to you and what you can make of it. I'm just trying to find something to get me a nice glass tone for my tele, so start comparing by what you play and what your style is.
I bought this tonelab, and i'm using it with a Marshall MG 100 half stack. The problem is, is that when i plug both into my guitar, the great sound of the amp kinda gets muffled, or it dosen't sound as good with the tonelab (pinch harmonics don't sound good, ect). i was wondering if this was a good combination of products or if i should try something else?
I was in the studio when this was filmed. It was all recorded in one take... the backing track was played into one channel while David played along to it. It all went down live and we just took a direct line out of the TonelabLE. Amazing.
one of the few demo videos i've watched where i actually enjoyed the guitar work.. this guy is a pretty good player
Clicked to hear a pedalboard review and Bam! This guy is channeling Steve Howe... Very refreshing to hear.
i bought it this week, and it sounds awesome. great.
This is the superior multi effects pedal IMO.
Superior !?
Not today but 15 years ago it was for sure.

man at 1:55 that sounds pretty awesome. With all the knobs on this beast it looks like there is endless tones to this. Great demo too!

You win the DONKEY of the year award.....This demo actually changed my mind about purchasing this unit!.....YUK
The ComChorus patch sounds amazing even by 2019 standards!
Beautiful tones!

This is the coolest unit out there, cant wait for one (im buying this next month!)
I went ahead & got one. I played it live twice already using the factory presets (after only 2 practices). I can't wait to start tweaking, & I'm going into a tweed blues Jr. Love it so far!!

A realy flexible unit, sounds great! I got it on January and I'm very satisfied with its sound and functionality :-)
What an excellent guitar player. And amps, that are the best, for tubes.
Thank you for your video. Totally convinced me to get the Vox. pedal.
Wow, Very Cool! I want one! Awesome playing and tone as always David!
Texas turns out such wonderful players,
Great going David!
Just got my tonelab l.e. last week and its great! Gonna pair it up w/my Vox VT120+, Keeley Memphis Sun, and Mesa Boogie V2 and do some trials. See what i come up with.
Great player! thanks good demo..
yup. it has trebble bite resembling the dimebag style, a heavy metal pre-set, and some overdrive.
Great Playing and great modeling!! Great job VOX
had one for about 15 years, overall I like it, they could do a better job on the push buttons. I'm always taking it apart to fix them but other than that it's a great little preamp.
@CommBreakDown Surely do. Anything with an output socket can have headphones connected to it, with the proper adaptor of course.

i saw david spann at my local music store he gave a demo of all the marshall amps
Roger Daltrey's brother playing guitar. Superb playing !
Super Tastey intro David!
Guess Vox is lucky they have you as one of their Rep's !
I have the vox 6 years ago and is not for sale. I had the line 6 and the tone of the vox is much better.
this guy is awesome.
Great Player Demo Man !!! Cool David !!!

Hey
I use a tonelab LE and 2 Tech21 power engines (my guitar is an US Fender Strat vintageplayer). I only can say : do it ! ! !
Georges from France
@CommBreakDown yep theres an 1/8 inch out or use the L/R stereo or mono out for 1/4 inch headphones

i got this pedal recently and itll do anything you want it too! it sounds way better than any other multi fx pedal ive used....not just saying that
what was the price? it was new?
I never knew studdering john played so well
I own a line 6 x3 live a boss gt-8 and a tonelab. The tonelab rocks period guys so if you are after tone get the tonelab hands down

vox tonelab.. the best tune!!
Nice playing! :) I have the SE version and its wicked.

Solo usa un power amp de valvulas para eso. Marshall hace uno, y Carvin tambien. Solo conectalo a un gabinete, y ya esta. He visto el POD XT conectado asi y suena bien.
LE sounds better than the SE by quite a bit.
If you are after better sound rather than more features, get the LE for sure!
I know about the 20 vs 24 bit processing; I know you're biased, but have you A-B tested them, and if so, is there a noticeable difference to your ears? Great playing btw.
Yes.
I'm curiuos; have you compared the
LE to the SE? I'm kind of partial to the two expression pedals in my SE, but I may have to upgrade if the sounds are much better; plus I like the smaller footprint.
this guy is good.
Igual de bueno que los amplificadores VOX, pura calidad ;-).
Saludos desde Chile.
You've got a handy cam, you can post a vid.
nice.. thanks for the input.. im trying to get a warmer sound and it doesnt quite cut it through the effects loop of my solid state amp
it was recorded direct from the pedal
it has a hold delay function, which is similar somewhat, but its not a looper
I used to own the ME50 and I currently own the Tonelab.. Got it.
I don't really care if he is more coherent, or sounds better on stage or even on a different clip.
I wonder what kind of pickups he is using! that Fender sounds great
Can the tap tempo function be controled by an external midi footswitch ?
Or can the vox tonelab change the pressets of a tc electronic nova drive ?
I just sold my ME-50 and i will buy this one. I wouldn't go for the digitech though
one ting i dont like with this pedal is that- if u use the control button u can only turn on one effect at a time, u can not use control to turn delay and modulation of or vice versa,my boss gt models were good for that,
Are you Eric Johnson's brother? Nice!
Just wondering, but is this a preamp only pedal, or does it have a power amp also? And if so, can i plug this into a cabnet withouth the head?
I'm looking at all those haha i have the same question, i mean this one is the cheapest in price but i like the digitech because it a loop station which i guess this also does so maybe get the vox
how do you record using the usb port?
what kind of recording software do you need on your computer?
@freedomsoldier187
You could try the easy way,.. Use two headsets at the same time, Left ear = guitar, right ear = backing track, or the other way. This is how I do it, and it's working pretty well :P
I tried one of these out. Just couldnt get it to sound "real". Pretty good though for getting "most" of the sound your looking for.
the drop d setting... does that actually tune dadgbe or is it just a high gain setting?
This is much better I've owned both (still have the Tonelab)
If I were to use an amp, what do you recommend? I heard tech 21 trademark is the perfect for this. Any one you know that will not color the LE's sound.

I've had it for 2 years and I love it. But i have one problem. How to switch on Noise Reduction?.
