Just a suggestion. Use the manual mode. Slip the shifter to the left and you are in "manual." But manual just means you are specifying the highest gear the transmission will use. For example, if you are in 4th manual, the truck will drive automatic from 1st to 4th. This is great for going up or descending hills. Try it. You'll love it.
The truck did great! Gotta love it when someone uses a 4x4 for what it was intended! I always tested my toys stock, just to see what it'll do. After all that testing I'd lift it, throw some tires on it, regear it, and or throw some beefy axles on it. Then the fun begins haha badass channel man! Can't wait to see the rig transformation!
Heck yea Scott! Gotta see what she's capable of before and after mods! This is going to be my full-on prospecting rig that will help get me further into the backcounty to find that gold! I'm excited for the transformation and adventures ahead!!
That's a solid platform to build with too! So many options available! Function over appearance. Good thing about living in today's day and age is we get the best of both worlds. Haha
I learn a lot watching this . Not only about the TRD off road capability but also what Max Sherzer’s been doing since he’s been on the IL this season for the most part.. Haha …. Great video.
I've been eyeing up a tacoma trd offroad. Just the video i've been looking for, not just a walk around. I wanna see what it can really do! Great video man, keep it up.
I have a 21 ac lb in magnetic grey and love it most of the time too. Sometimes wish had the double cab. Plan on some light mods. Small lift. Wheels tires. Maybe axle gears and front locker. Rest be stuff for gear storage, organization or securing
Nice! I just put on one size taller tire and am quite impressed with how those look and function. You might want to start with tires since that extra 1/2" lift might be all you need.
Only had to use my rear locker in my old Tacoma a couple of clutch times…and she did not disappoint! In a Colorado Z71 Off-road now, definitely miss the peace of mind of having a rear locker…😮
finally a lunar rock access cab yota bro I will definitely watch your channel now, just discover middle of the night. I was considering getting AC than DC because easier movability and shorter wheel base and looks better in AC than DC and also as capable off road tough condition truck.
Welcome Rob, I had a similar debate. The ACLB has same wheelbase at DCSB. The AC is a tad lighter, has longer bed, a bit more capacity but small storage back seat area. If you don't do hardcore offroading or not very often I would suggest DCLB which is still quite capable.
Hey man, really digging your channel! One question, Do you know how to run the stereo with the engine off? I did the double-tap on the start button, but check engine and other warning lights come on. That freaks me out! Any advice is greatly appreciated! Thanks!
You may find S-mode and or ETC (Toyota's version of Tow/Haul Mode) helpful on steep inclines to keep the RPM's up and constant. Yes. aftermarket mud flaps and or rock sliders should be a must for you. I have the factory mud flaps and I already tore one off on my 2020 while off road. They are rigid and don't flex. Some aftermarket mud flaps are flexible providing a better choice for off road. I have the factory OEM running boards that fit the 2nd & 3rd gens and they provide great protection from road debris. However, at this point for the back country roads I do I won't really need rock sliders.
Thanks Clay. I have tried the S-mode and will have to read up on the ETC. Am looking into mudflaps now. Rocksliders looks cool and are semi functional, but they do add weight and I have never really needed them on my other vehicles before.
Will do Apa! Good question, I'm not sure. The second time I tried, the locker did not engage because I wasn't in 4x4. Once it engaged, the truck crawled out of there piece of cake!
Thanks Cory, I'm having fun exploring and testing out this new truck. I will be demanding quite a bit from it in my mining pursuits! Oooh, you have a pretty sweet offroader as well!!!
Sweet truck! I love lunar rock , especially in an AC! I was just out in CO and was in Gold Hill! Pretty cool place ! Wish I would have had my 2nd gen out there
Just subbed. I don’t know what lift you’re thinking of but I think if you went for the dealer installed 2” front and 1” rear you’d get a ton of views! I can’t find any videos about it. It’s too expensive really but I think you’d get enough views to cover it. That lift and 255 85 R16’s would make it a real badass off-roader with full warranty!
I totally agree with you Chris and had considered going that route. However, I have decided on more performance at less cost and my dealer says that the lift will NOT void any warranties. Bilstein 6112 5160 coming soon!
@@goldsteadingoverland I look forward to seeing it! I’m in Canada and they won’t cover any of the aftermarket parts and sometimes get into anything directly connected to them. I think they’re a bit better to deal with in the States
Awesome truck test! I never spend money on after market flashy wheels the stock Toyota do just fine but always upgrade tire size for additional height and traction! If replacing the stock suspension set up cry once when dropping some cash on proven quality aftermarket coilovers etc. ✌️
MTS ROCK mode would have worked much better here 5:18. Your locker only gives you 3 wheel drive in this situation while mts rock gives you true 4 wheel drive
I want to get a Tacoma one day and I ask myself if I really need an off-road and just get an TRD sport. Seeing you get unstuck with that rear locker makes me not want the TRD sport hahaha
Hahah, I hear you! So long there is a Limited Slip Differential you should be ok. My old truck had lsd and no locker and it was still pretty darn good off road.
Goodmorning Ron. I was almost sold on the GM Trail Boss until I found out about the decades long and unaddressed transmission and lifter issues they have. That was very worrisome. This Tacoma is my reliable backcountry prospecting work vehicle. My heavy work truck will be an American made GM, Ford or Ram.
I contemplated a Chevy Trail Boss but once I found out about the transmission and lifter issues, I was out. Best of luck with your decision. If you are curious about the taco, I will be putting up more unbiased reviews here soon.

That makes sense. I will have to get that dialed in. Have used it already for downhill braking assist.
I use it a lot in my 2023 off road. It is super helpful. Especially when you get annoyed at the constant gear shift.
This channel has been great to see how a Tacoma actually performs and the build quality for a normal dude

Don't think he's normal. In a good way👍
Haha, I do;) The truck has to do what it has to do and do it well. The thought of pinstriping my new paint hurts a bit, but I gotta suck it up.
Thanks Rick ;)

Loving the content. Bigger wheels that can handle some off roading with MPG in mind is exactly what im interested in. Keep it coming.
Exactly! I've got rims and tires coming soon. More aggressive AT a bit taller with overall weight in mind.
I love wheeling around those hills in my dodge dakota, hope to see you up there sometime!

You have to be in 4lo to use the rear locker, that’s why in the beginning you couldn’t get out.

I'm sure 4low without locker would of made it out of that hole.
Try crawl control. It will get you through anything. Just dial in the mph you want.
Definitely will have to play around with that!
