When reinstalling the plugs, I recommend putting a little ani-seize on the threads. Also, instead of using the socket to start the threads, I use a piece of rubber hose, like fuel line hose, that fits tightly over the top of the plug. I use the hose to remove the plugs after I have broken the seal with the plug socket. Excellent demonstration video. Thanks.
Your like me.. I always think ahead incase I need to replace the plugs again even if it's not my ride. Awesome comment! Thanks its Super appreciated!! Eddie J. Long Island N.Y
2 Things that help a lot....#1..when using the swivel wrap a turn or 2 of electrical tape around the knuckle joint. That lets you swivel without too much play. #2 .. take the time to remove the front wheels. ( mine was a 1996) That gave me a ton of room to work & speeded up the process.
Thank you for the great reply. We love to empower our customers by showing you how-to perform your own auto repairs while installing our high quality auto parts. Have a great day! 1aauto.com +Ken Darsey
That is an absolutely fantastic tip about the swivel joint
middle plug drivers side, if you slide the rubber boot your looking at down and turn the steering wheel to where there's a flat side on the bottom just over that plug it will give more room to work with that plug. school of hard knocks
Loretta Bain which way to turn the wheel?
You are a life saver. I ran into this problem today and had no idea what I was going to do. Luckily I saw this. Thank you.
Thanx!!
Also I noticed he could have put a wrench on the end of the spark plug socket?
Luckily I could turn the plug in enough by hand until my socket would slip over it
Thank you for this because my dad watched another video and he said that we would have to disconnect the steering column from the bottom side to make room enough to get to that plug.
Tip... use old straight plug boot to help you start to thread in plugs
Good idea
Gas hose works a little better because it’s a little more stiff
I guess it's only fair that I buy the plugs through your website...
Thanks. You guys saved me $200. I won't forget that anytime soon. 👍
It could be a bad spark plug or even a bad cap or rotor. You may also want to check the spark plug wires to see if they're arching out. If you have a check engine light on, you should have the code pulled, as this will more than likely tell you what's causing the issue. Hope this helps you out.
This has helped me greatly in what to do in changing my "Jimmy's" spark plugs. But, for me anyway, the tires will have to be removed! LOL!! Thanks for posting!!
Remove both Front Wheels, jackstands and use a piece of 3/8 airline hose to install all then tighten em. I just sit there with the wheels off n reach right in easy,
Thank you so much for your instructional video. My fiance and I had been trying to figure out how to get the three on the driver's side replaced...needless to say, hours later we looked this up and about 30 minutes later we were finished. Thank you so much. Time and money saver :)
Tanks for watching. 1aauto.com 888-844-3393
I just finished changing the # 5 plug on my daughters blazer.I turned the steering shaft to find a flat area and used craftsman flex spark plug socket #43322.The socket itself is as short as a std. long socket. That socket helped alot. Also the suggestion of using a rubber hose to start the plug helps.I used 5/16 id gas hose.
#3 plug.
wow. i've done tons of spark plugs and i have never done it through the wheel well. you make it look so easy. i've always done it from the top, cursing and swearing the whole time. i'm definatly going to try through the wheel well next time. thanks. i have a short extension for that middle plug on the drivers side. it was a regular 3 inch extension, and the end twisted off, ground it up so it fit snug into a plug socket, so now its less than 2 1/2, works great.
I just saw another video on how to deal with the number three plug.. instead of trying to squeeze your way in between the stable steering column and hoping that you don't bend something in the process.. simply remove the steering column from the gearbox that way the steering column is flexible enough so that you can move it out of the way to remove and replace the spark plug.. the steering column is attached to the gearbox with only one Bolt.. I believe this technique will save you a lot of headaches instead of trying to maneuver your fingers in hands into such a tight spot.. hope this helps
Many thanks to Loretta Bain for posting a time and knuckle saver on accessing Spark Plug #3.
After watching this video, it didn't even take me an hour do change the plugs on my 2002 Chevy Blazer! I really appreciate you video!! THANKS!!!
Thanks for this tutorial. I just finished changing the plugs on my 05 blazer but had a much more difficult time with the middle driver's plug. I couldn't get the extension deep enough into the spark plug socket so I had to use a 3/4" wrench on the end on the socket. Took my about an hour to figure that plug out, 3-5 minutes for the rest.
Thanks dude. This was the answer I needed.
Thanks for this. The driver side, middle plug, is a pain. I'm glad there was some insight into how to get that one out. I was going to figure out a way to unhook the drive train. :(
I'm glad I saw you do this the correct way. I was going to mention if you didn't. Always use an extension with your hand first BEFORE attaching a ratchet. Always always always.
With a ratchet attached, you can't FEEL if the plugs are cross thread. Good Video!

I love 1AAuto. I'm going to start buying my parts from you when possible. Thank you so much for saving me hours of beating my head on the fenders!!!
you guys did a great job of explaining something I wish that I have never had to do. Very helpful information.
That's a great little trick, and one that I've used in the past.
We currently do not have an auto repair video on this particular repair. If the plugs are hard to reach you may be able to access them by using a similar method.
Thanks for all the info you provide. Trying to work on my wife's new to her Jimmy, and saw those driver's side plug, ugh. Thanks for the tip! And love your store too. Always great parts at an even better price. Always check out your store before I go anywhere else!
you guys are awesome and have been a huge help to me in my endeavors toward doing my own maintenance , you have saved me hundreds of dollars thank you
Thanks so much. Just put this info to good use!!! Thought i was gonna have to bring it to the shop for the first time. You can get at the spark plugs from under the wheel wells...who knew?
Thank you SO SO much. I spent 4 hours trying to get to that drivers side one.
Another way to look at the spark plug coming out of 3 is to use a 5/8 extended/long socket which will be shorter than the spark plug socket and you can then put a u-joint into the 5/8 socket. BTW not all spark plug sockets are the same length. Works like a charm, but the best I could do was break/loosen the spark plug for a couple of turns because the space is so narrow to work in. The socket with the u-joint will not come out after only only a few turns . Then I used a 3/8 hose to back the plug out the rest of the way. Still a pain in the ...
Thanks for the video.
While we were trying to put the #3 plug back in, we discovered that the steering shaft will move upward toward the steering wheel. While we didn't force it, we wondered if there's a way to separate the upper and lower sections of the steering shaft, making that plug more accessible. Is that a possibility or would it have been a total disaster?
after 4 years I'm now getting a P303 code. I'm dreading pulling that plug again to check it. I'm glad I checked how to replace the plug if I have to, but I'm going to replace the distributor cap first as I've been having water issues in the cap. Every time I get a hard long rain without using the car I have to spray WD 40 on the dist...cap to start it. It would start every time, but on this last rain while my car ran, it just stopped one time and now I'm getting a misfire in 3. We'll see what happens.
@@jimschaefer7827 Probably not much help now, but I don't really know the answer to that.
This worked perfectly better than the video’s advice
Thanks for the video's man! Your techniques for removing difficult parts have really helped me in dealing with a lot of things not even related to the video's themselves. I'm doing a total tune up on my son's 1993 S10 Blazer and I NEVER would have thought of trying to go through the wheel wells like that! Thanks so much for posting!!! I've enjoyed many of them. I just did a major upgrade on my 2004 Maxima, valve covers, O2 Sensor, brakes, shocks, struts ETC. And your vids have been a great help and invaluable! Preciate Ya!
+Kendall Ellis Thanks for watching. Have a great day!
Thanks for the tips, i would have eventually learned this on my own after a failed attempt from the top, glad i don't have to blow time trying something that would make it a lot harder. knowing this will make it a lot easier (if you can say that with this vehicle).
@Fluentmotion You're welcome. That last plug can be a little tricky.
@1aauto yep, everything went smooth except for that drivers side middle. dont know if its kosher or not but we ended up jacking up the motor a lil to get a clear shot at it (could not get the socket/joint in there at all!) Hardest part was unclipping the plastic clips holding the plug wires (replaced those has well). Again, great vid, we got it done in no time thanks to this vid!!
Thank you for this. I own a 96 chevy blazer 4×4 and I do the maintenance myself and I had to pay somebody else to do my plugs because of that one by the drive shaft. Now i can do it myself now that you showed me how to do it without taking the tire off and removing the drive shaft (saw the other guy do it that way). That just seemed like a lot of work for a little bitty plug.
@25Arsenic Thanks for stopping by. Have a great day! 1aauto.com
Go to an auto parts store and get a 5/8th inch spark plug socket with built in ujoint. It is 3/4 inch shorter than a socket with a ujoint adapter. Works great on middle driver's side plug.
@JustBrianMusic it can be a tough one. That's why we did this video for you guys.
@kUNCHRIS You may want to check the plug wires and also the gap on the plugs. If could have a bad wire.
The one and only time I did this we had to disconnect the steering column. Blazers are easy to work on but not the plugs. Everyone that owns a Blazer should attempt it. You learn so much about your vehicle and get grease covered bloody nuckles if you can't figure it out.
We used a socket and an extention on the middle one, and on the very end plug we used some pliers to get the boot off.
Pretty good little trick. I've done that on these trucks too.
@nicawarrior1 No prob, and yeah I think a starter video may be on its way!
cant thank ya enough for this video, saved me time and money. Great job!
Simply put a 12" extension with a wobble tip to get the center DS , add turn the column to the flat side and move the boot and it still is a royal P I A . Like most of the stuff on these . For example the bell housing bolts ,
i wish I would have watched this vid yesterday! I changed my plugs and wires on my 97 s10, and this plug was very annoying to get out. ended up taking longer to get just this one out than all of the rest of them combined!
Thank you for watching.
1aauto.com 888-844-3393
You should be able to remove it as the video shows. You could try to a longer extention, or maybe even a swivel socket. If the tire's in your way it may make it a little easier to work in there if you remove it. Hope this helps you out. 1aauto.com
You may want to check to see if there's fuel getting to the motor. It could be a bad fuel regulator. Hope this helps you out. 1aauto.com 888-844-3393
Another outstanding video, doing my 93 s10 and you are spot on.
You can use a short piece of rubber hose to start the #3 spark plug. Slip it over the end of the plug and spin the hose. Let's you know quickly if it is going in or starting to cross thread.
I used a small rubber hose over the end of the spark plug to thread it back in , that works also ...
If it has the 4.3 in it, you could apply it you your Blazer.
@hp11208 Yes this is a 2000 Blazer.
@wavyatdarootz This video is on a 4.3L engine, and through the wheel well is the easiest way. The 2.8 is smaller dimensionally so you may be able to get to the plugs in a different way. Haven't done a starter on that engine so I can't help you there right now either....sorry.
A tip on inserting a new plug into the #5 hole where the steering column is an obstacle. I use a 6" piece of fuel line hose, I insert the spark plug tip where the plug wire would attach into the fuel line, it should be a fairly tight fit. I am able to feed the plug into the hole, the hose is both firm enough and flexible enough that it works great in threading the plug into the hole without any difficulty.
number 3 is a pain!!!! im doing it right now!
Use a piece of flexable rubber tubing to install the center spark plug on the 4.3 vortec
@arribaeljaripeo1 It is a 5/8 spark plug socket. Should be available any place that sells tools
It helped me to use and extension to hand start the plug, use my left hand to hold the plug and feel for the hole and use my right hand to slowly twist the end of the extension.
I wish that I knew how hard it was to change these out BEFORE I bought an S10.
Because you have to do it twice in the life of the truck ?
I have a 92 Olds bravada that has a cold start misfire. It smooths out after it warms up but it's perplexing to me that it misses when it's cold and goes away when it warms up. But, sometimes it'll buck going down the road and sometimes it won't. Sometimes it runs smooth and sometimes it runs rough. I replaced the wires, and I'm going to replace the cap and rotor, and the plugs. It only has 86,000 miles on it. It's my winter driver. My daily driver is a 2012 Mustang GT. Anyway, I am not getting a mil. I think it must be in the ignition system so plugs and cap and rotor and wires is what i'm gonna do. Great video here by the way. Any thoughts on this would be welcome. Thanks for the heads up on the plugs.
Thanks for the info... Having a hard time getting the straight boot off the front driver side. Going to try needle nose or vicegrip and flathead? Bought the gimpy bent plier looking removal tool, cut my hand up and bent the pliers... Wheel well with tire removed and that side jacked up seems best.
Omg papi u hella smart 😩😩😩
Here is the easiest way to to change the driverside center plug... Pull the wire off. Take a closed ended wrench, one that just fits over the porcelain. Put it over the porcelain, torque the porcelain and break it off. Put a regular socket over the plug and remove easily from the top of the engine bay. Us a closed ended wrench that fits the plug to tighten the new one in.
+dr07828 Thanks for checking us out. 1AAuto.com
@8:34 The better answer Is look at the end of that socket ..It has a fitting for a wrench Slip on your wench If you can not get it to budge..A number of light taps with a hammer or something that will fit in there ... Also a good shot of lube ...Finally a trick i find that works sometimes it a tap to loosen Then a tap to tighten Then a tap to loosen...you need up breaking up the gunk holding the threads together
Great video. i hate doing tune-ups on them and I have one this Thursday to do. I have found the Kia Sorento to be far worse IMO.
Remember not having to disassemble your wheels to change a sparkplug?
Had an ol wrench tell me use a 3/8” piece of fuel hose over
top end of plug to guide new plug in and safely start into head….
Thank you. This video helped a ton!
I just removed the shaft. Only one bolt and the wheel locks with the keys out so no alignment problems.
I dropped the steering shaft on mine , it was one bolt and then I used a hammer to tap it back into place to bolt it down
Yes it should be the same.
Thanks for the tutorial, I have to change my plug and possibly wires soon (pushing 185k miles). Why can't it be as simple as older engines? I changed the plugs and wires on my '92 Dodge Dakota in 15 minutes and didn't have to take anything apart to do so.
this was a very helpful video - thank you
changing my plugs on my 01 blazer today so this is a great vid! im sure i will have much less frustration now, THANK YOU!!
I wish I had watched this back when I changed my spark plugs & wires out! That middle plug on the drivers side was a total pain in the ass to get out.
Thanks 1aauto.
+joe mo You're welcome! 1aauto.com 866-403-3393
Very helpful video, thanks mate.
+Da420Gamer92 _YT Thanks for checking us out!
Mike, my 1996 S10 doesn't have enough clearance to change out plug #3. A flex joint doesn't have enough room to connect to my socket. I had to use a regular deep well socket because it was shorter than the spark plug socket. The deep well socket will go on the plug but that's as far as I can go without pulling off the steering shaft.
Hey, I'm running into the same issue. Did you resolve this? I got the socket out but I can't get the new socket in.
Scheme Baron Hi. Yes. I removed the steering shaft - very easy to do and had to be done to replace the plug. Take out the one bolt that holds the shaft to the steering box. Pull the shaft off and Walla - tons of room to do the plug.
Hey, thanks for your response! Is there anyway you could direct me to where that one bolt is, or what the steering box looks like on the 4.3 s10? I took a bolt out yesterday that I thought was the one everyone was talking about, but I couldn't get the steering shaft to budge.
Scheme Baron After removing that bolt, you need to pry a screwdriver in and pry the shaft off the gear box. Just trying to wiggle the shaft off by hand I couldn't do it either.
Perfect, man! I got it. I tried it last night and couldn't wiggle the shaft off either, so I figured I was missing something or doing it wrong. I ended up spraying a little PB Blaster on it (it was pretty rusty) getting a crowbar and a hammer, then going underneath to hammer away and it came off! Thanks for your affirmation on this. This completely solved my problem with #3.
Thank you for your video. Question. If I do that project for unknown neighbor, how much money should I charge him for labor?
I put anti-sieze on all my spark plug threads...
you guys rule!! thanks again
Gotta change mine this weekend, orange "check engine" light started flashing on my 04 blazer.
Wish I would I would of had this video 3 years ago when I was 14 I broke three plugs on that second cylinder on the drivers side
Hey that’s my Blazer 🙂 (not literally but it’s looks identical
That steering column is a *BEEP*. I have a misfire now. i think i didnt thread it in all the way. Now for new spark plug wires regapping them plugs :D
is this the same for a 2000 blazer
Very good video, thanks!
This is the most ridiculous engineering flaw I have ever dealt with !
If tire was off wouldn't it be easier?
Jesse M that’s what I do on mine makes it 200x easier
Can you please have a video on changing the plug wires on a 1991 Chevrolet s-10 V6 4.3L
Thank you for watching Jerry. Unfortunately we do not currently have a video for your application but will keep it in mind for future videos.

HAVE U EVER USED APIECE OF 3/8 VACUUM LINE TO START THE SPARK PLUGS......OLD HOT RODDING TRICK!!!
JOHN FLYNN Yup. heater hose is your buddy. Junkyards don't care (usually) if you cut one off, because they can't sell them if they are crap for actual use, but for a plug guide, it's OK. One of the best cheats anybody ever showed me.
I had to remove the steering shaft on my s10 v6. I think the body mounts are worn out. I also put the plug back with a 3/8 rubber hose over the end of the plug.
thats a good tip...
on plug 3, what tool did you use in that tight spot to get it out ?
fun fact if you pull that rubber on the shaft down you getr a ton of room
We all here cause of driver side middle finger, i mean plug.
yes!!!! thank you so much
The inside of the wire stayed on the front plug when I took it out, 😡 but I got the rest of them out ok. Any idea on getting the front ones out without breaking the inside metal?
omfg ty sooooo much i coulnt figure out how to get to mine
No problem. Glad to hear it helped you out. 1aauto.com 866-403-3393
I use a old spark wire, att the plug on the old wire than turn
Some guy I know says that he takes his wheels off to make this easier.
It is if your broad shouldered
I have a 2000 Chevy Blazer that I just bought and it had been in a wreck and I don't know how to put the Park lights bulbs in in the front would you have a video on that
+Henery Thomas Sr. Thank you for watching. Unfortunately we do not have a video for your application. We will keep this in mind for future repairs. www.1AAuto.com 866-403-3393
NOTE- IF** YOU DON'T KNOW WHAT "CROSS THREADED" MEANS... YOU MIGHT WANNA GARAGE!
BUT THAN AGAIN HE'S DOING THIS FOR THE ENTIRE WORLD 🤷♂️NOT EVERYONE MAY KNOW OUR TERMS! IN TEXAS I found out pull "A U-TURN" is called "PULL &/SWING A BITCH"! SO I guess I should be more open minded!
BTW- GREAT VIDEO. YOU SHOW EVERY IMPORTANT STEP! THANK YOU FOR THAT!
FYI. The tip of the spark plug that you pointed at is not a diode. It's an electrode. Big difference. Nice vid though. Thanks for the effort.
What spark plug did y’all use
