    Konrad Junghaenel and the SWR Sympony Orchestra help us to rediscover the stately richness and beauty of Joseph Haydn's early classical music. Thanks to both.

    At one time the most popular and recognized symphony was this one. Then came Beethoven's 5th. But imagine the sheer enormity of Haydn's contribution to music. By the time Haydn had written his last symphony, most of the symphonies that would ever be written would have been composed and Haydn would have written most of them. The same is true for the string quartet and the piano sonata. What we get from Haydn is sound music from a sane mind. Tremendous spirit as well. Even the slow movements in Haydn cannot be considered correctly played without great spirit. No matter how grim certain passages may be, Haydn never bogs down. In the 2nd movement of his 92nd symphony there's a foreshadowing of Brahms, but it's brief and surrounded by streams of light. Similar places in his music abound. It takes a full life to come back to Haydn and recognize his contribution to music, an appreciation for the mature over the infantile, pubescent or taudry. Thanks and best

      You’re appraisal of Haydn is a useful corrective with those who have a rather simplistic view of the composer.
      Re: Beethoven’s 5th.
      There are some interesting links with Haydn of which you may not be aware.
      1. The tonal journey of Beethoven’s 5th from darkness to light, conflict to resolution, c minor to C major in a series of 3rd-related keys, et cetera, is almost identical to that of Haydn 95 (1791).
      1st movement - both c minor
      2nd movement - Haydn E flat major/Beethoven A flat major (slight difference but both 3rd-related)
      3rd movement - both c minor/C major/c minor
      4th movement - both C major.
      2. Haydn’s Symphony 45 (‘Farewell’) written in 1772, is the most significant, and greatest work of through-composition and cyclic integration prior to Beethoven’s 5th in 1808.
      3. The idea of the Scherzo returning in the Finale of Beethoven’s 5th had already been trialled by Haydn in his Symphony 46 in 1772.
      4. You will find examples of the famous ‘Fate’ motif in Haydn - for example in the first movement of the piano sonata Hob.XVI:49; however, if you listen to the first movement of Symphony 28 (1765 sic) you will find the entire first movement dominated by an intensive working-out of the exact self-same and familiar motif.
      You cannot really speak meaningfully and knowledgeably about ‘Beethoven’s fate motif’ unless you are also aware of the little unison motif that opens the first movement of Haydn’s string quartet in f# minor Opus 50 No 4, and of course its subsequent treatment.
      5. The great scholar of the Classical period HC Robbins Landon has described Haydn’s c minor Symphony 52 as the ‘grandfather’ of Beethoven’s 5th.
      6. Et cetera.
      That said, in every case, Beethoven did his own thing - a key part of his greatness; however, his debt was perhaps greater to Haydn than he was usually willing to acknowledge.

      You’re very welcome, thank you for your kind comment.
      PS ‘Bravo’ is an Italian word that is now commonly used in English, but actually to be used correctly:
      Bravo = masculine singular
      Bravi = masculine plural
      Brava = feminine singular
      Brave = feminine plural
      A mixed male/female group always follows the masculine plural ie Bravi.

    Joyful Haydn! His nature!

      Not sure just how ‘joyful’ this really is.
      This symphony immediately became immensely popular, perhaps the most so of the twelve ‘London’ symphonies with the English audiences - it had to be re-scheduled and repeated by popular request - because it so exactly caught the mood of a country in the grip of real fears and apprehension about war with revolutionary France.
      The well-known second movement was reviewed in the London press as:
      ‘men advancing into battle...the clash of arms...the groans of the wounded...the hellish roar of war increased to a climax of horrid sublimity;’ et cetera.
      Hardly ‘joyful’ is it.
      Haydn suffers more than most composers from having his music carelessly described in a few simplistic and erroneously diagnosed happy and humorous-style adjectives.
      Listen again to this symphony with some awareness of the historical context,* and you will hear music with rather different ears from what you have described originally.
      Haydn knew very well the tense situation that existed in England - indeed much of Europe at the time - and went down to Portsmouth to review some British warships where he also saw a camp of about 3,500 French prisoners; in short,it was very real to him and this is reflected in the music which was understood and appreciated by the contemporary audience for whom the’Military’ symphony became the composer’s single biggest hit.
      Hope that helps you to understand better a fantastic work which even from the very first notes actually sounds threateningly ominous.
      * In short, the threat to England’s security at the time was probably the most serious between the Spanish Armada of 1588 and the attempts by Nazi Germany in 1940.

    Konrad Junghänel ist für mich einer der bedeutendsten deutschen Dirigenten. Ich habe die Freude, ihn oftmals in der Staatsoper Wiesbaden erleben zu dürfen.Er liebt nicht nur Musik - Er lebt Musik. Bravissimo

    So, when the conductor brushes back his hair, is that an extra signal or direction to the orchestra?
