Are you depressed? Do you feel bad? Haydn put you OK in an instant because his music is not only beautiful but so glad and happy, so plenty of divine detachment and humor.

Wow, Bravo! I've never heard of this group. The crispness of playing and ensemble is like Academy of St. Martin in the Fields in its prime. It is so great to see modern instruments with virtuoso players used to play Haydn with baroque informed interpretation. It's like the best of both worlds!

It’s a debatable point; all the available evidence points to the fact that all six of the symphonies 82 to 87 written for the French capital were going to be performed with an orchestra of about 60 in Paris - hardly a chamber orchestra.

Typical that in age when life was very uncertain and uncomfortable the music was so positive and activating. Now we live in luxury and wealth and the music conveys anguish and chaos.

The pace, tempo, and timing to this performance is very good. The conductor is energetic and places emphasis where it needs to be to bring out the most of his players. Just love the timpani at the initial melody. His music encompasses the good-humored nature of the human spirit.

He would play parts of albums on a nice record player and we the class, were tested on what we learned from the pieces he was playing. What if Rock/Metal was put to this? Woofrigginhoo!!!

Originally scored for 80 players, the size of the Paris orchestra with 10 double basses, this is the " economy version " so it could be played back in Austria. the original is wonderful but this works as well, joy unbounded.

According to all the evidence of the sources, the orchestra of the Concert spiritual in Paris that first performed these works was 60 players.
If Haydn performed this symphony at Eszterhaza, there would have been probably 24 players.

It's been forever since I've listened to this symphony. There are 105 others and I've been otherwise occupied. But today I listened to "Bear" with new ears. I'm not sure if this symphony was intended as the first for the set, but it does set a new standard on many levels. I was laughing with delight at the conclusion. Just astonishing. And a first-rate orchestra with precision and involvement and a superb conductor.

It reminds me of both 88 and 104, but it also reminds me that I need to listen to all of them. Plug in a random number and see what you get. I’ve tried this trick with the quartets, the piano sonatas and now the symphonies… who knew symphony #50 was such a masterpiece? Or 67. They all need a listen.

@@steve.schatz Ha! Some things are worth waiting for, haha.
The amazing thing about Haydn’s output is that even if we cut it in HALF, randomly eliminating half his production, there would still be enough all time masterpieces that his place in history would be assured.
I’m not terribly keen on solo piano music but I love Haydn’s sonatas, though I’ve fallen for the piano sonatas of CPE Bach, too. You should look those up.

A sensational performance clearly enjoyed by performers, the audience, and those of us able to watch on UA-cam.
Fantastic conducting by Francois Leleux, he has - not inappropriately - virtually danced his way through this symphony, shaping the phrasing, and controlling the orchestra beautifully whilst allowing the wonderful musicians to play.
Very well judged tempi, the slightly slower minuet movement is important to balance the quicker allegretto ‘slow’ movement.
One polite suggestion, in this repertoire - Haydn and Mozart, plus Beethoven too - it’s a good idea to adopt 18th century practice and split the violins (ie seat them opposite each other on either side of the conductor), rather than adopt the later 19th century practice as seen here.
The split violins was as the composers intended, and helps to bring out some of the antiphonal effects better.
Thanks for posting this brilliant, gripping performance - it was much appreciated.

These symphonies show Haydn growing to incorporate more mozart woodwind techniques, but still keep his unique power and ireegular notes and dissonance. Beethoven certainly learned his symphony style by studying both mozart and Haydn

I discovered a weird coincidence with the key signatures of mozart and haydn symphones. Haydn wrote #82, #83,#84 in 1786. #82 is is c major, #83 is G minor, #84 is E flat. Mozart wrote his last 3 symphonies in 1788. #39 is in E flat, #40 is in G minor, and #41 is in C major! Same keys yet reverse ordering. Just not a coincidence. Mozart had these Haydn symphonies on his mind becauae he rarely wrote in G minor or E flat.

I’ve written about this matter extensively elsewhere, but in short, Haydn wrote to his publisher Artaria in an extant letter and stated clearly that the running order was to be:
      *87 85 83 84 86 82.*
Artaria ignored this, and the familiar 82-87* was his unauthorised and unmusical ordering which was adopted by Mandyczewski in 1907 in the first complete Haydn symphonies, and then taken over unchanged in the now universal Hoboken catalogue, along with three additions tagged on the end (Hob. I:1-104, 106, 107, and 108).
Like the set of six by Michael Haydn (Symphonies 34-39 but confusingly P26-31) and Mozart’s last three (K543, K550, and K551), both sets written in 1788, Haydn *ended* his ‘Paris’ set (1785/86) with a big-sounding trumpets and drums C major work, as did his brother and great friend later.
      * Artaria’s sequence 82-87 makes zero musical sense and is not chronological.
