A Chorus Line In Quarantine

  • What started out as a fun project during the 2020 Coronavirus Pandemic quarantine on our private Facebook group evolved into something emotional, nostalgic, and uniquely unifying amidst a very dark and isolated period in humanity. Now, more than a decade after their closing night, 44 cast members of the broadway revival of "A Chorus Line" share what brought them all together "again". It was...5, 6, 7, 8.
A CHORUS LINE IN QUARANTINE was the brainchild of Jeffrey "Shecky" Schecter who played Mike in the original Broadway revival cast. On March 31st, just around the two week mark of the quarantine, Shecky reached out with a fun proposition to his fellow cast mates to do a clean "mark” through of the opening combo for fun in whatever living circumstances everyone was quarantining in and he (or someone) would throw them together. Enter Heather Parcells (who played Judy Turner in the Revival). She volunteered to edit the project and reached out to everyone from the cast who wasn't on facebook...The comment train started, and the opening combo videos started rolling in from the cast who has been dispersed all over the globe during the decade following the closing of the show, in August, 2008. Cast members live in New York, Japan, Australia, California, Florida, Maine, and New Jersey, to name a few locales. Each cast member began putting their own personal touch on the combination. From fully produced comedic sketches to topical jokes about the pandemic to full out dance explosions, but each maintaining the sheer JOY of getting to dance.
As people started to share their videos on the facebook group, a reunion began despite the isolation. We became a cast again. We interacted again. We supported each other's dancing again, we were rooting for the next video to see how the next person would spin it. It became our morning coffee. It became our morning dose of positivity. We all no longer felt alone. We were all looking forward to something. While we currently live in a completely uncertain world, having knowledge of something good coming our way was enough to get us through the next day.

Thank you all for your commitment to dancing. I wish I could still dance like you. It made me feel alive & no other feeling like dancing on the stage. I’m elderly now but I will never forget how dancing made me feel. I’m an old Pamela Devis 👧. Fabulous memories of the theatre. Dance is magical. I hope theatre’s will open again after the virus because dreams will die of performance. The live theatre is a magical place, whether to watch or perform. Penny in Warwickshire.

Dear Heather, dear Jeffrey, my Name is Stefan Nagel and I played "Mike" in the Original Austrian Cast in Vienna in 1987. It was a highlight of my life and I must say: This wonderful choreography sticks in our brain and muscles forever, and I am glad it does. How wonderful to see you all doing it after so many years. Thanks for the memories... Stay healthy everyone, your were "many singular sensation's". Stefan

@Cindy Klenk Hello Cindy, thanks for answering me. Never happend before - well, I don't ever write comments on anything on the net. You wrote: "wie geht's" - do you speak german? Have you had (or still have) a musical career ongoing)? I mean in general - not during corona times. I suppose there is not much going on in the states. Theaters in germany are closed and will stay closes for a while. In any case, the new saying is: "stay negative..." Best stefan

I saw the national touring company twice, Richmond VA and Corpus Christi, TX. At the latter show, we sat behind a dance teacher and her class of about 20 school age kids. As the curtain came down, the teacher asked her class "Okay, are we going to put this on?" The kids were all for it. One girl asked "Do we get to say the cuss words? If we do, I want to play Val!"

WOW!! after all these years I still get thrills and chills when seeing any production of this show. It inspired so many people to dance professionally or just to enjoy the art of dance more: be it a major theme park, resort revue, cruiseline and surely local/regional theatre!! I always loved they were just people on the line yearning to become a star or be seen on stage in their own right . Just learning and being able to perform and get paid for something they loved to do was the passion that just could not be taken away. And too even performing for nothing in a local theatre is always something too any want to be performer or dancer will do just for the satisfaction and love they get back through applause. There has never been a show like the original A Chorus Line. The first edition was back in the late 70s. Aways so popular and loved, that a 2nd broadway show in New York City would also be produced.in that the show was bought back to another generation. And I am sure will be continued to be produced who knows!! for how long. (i actually saw a few of these people on Equity Tours.) Like so many people who have seen the show, I always wanted to be one of those professional dancers and make the line only to be chosen to be in the show (Oh my, I have so many thoughts.) The show is in my all time top 10 broadway shows ever!! , The dancers too are so defined in the characters they are and like everyone wants their dream to come true. Some will get it, many do not. and alas is with life, sacrifices will happen But if you get to do that ONE thing you LOVE, you are exceptionally lucky...no matter how short or long a tenure. I love this show. Thank you for sharing this. I would be honored to see any of you again in a broadway show. And I guess that is about the greatest and well deserved complement to you I can give.

Same here. I was trained as a dancer but due to joint and muscle issues and dance injuries I can't really dance the way I used to. Forget jumps or anything that puts stress in my right leg (sciatica, hip arthritis, and 2 years ago this June I blew out my ACL). The dancer in me lives and I get all excited and wrapped up in the music and forget to take it easy. Then I end up in pain for days. Lol

This is so wonderful, thank you for sharing. This is FUN, which we all need so much right now. But it is also a reminder of everything that ACL is about - that dancers are real people, with personalities and lives outside of the theater. And some of them are still whipping off double-pirouettes, and others are having babies, and they are all sharing so generously a little bit of themselves. Thank you for the beautiful concept, amazing editing (wow!), and for giving all of us a glimpse into your lives and your love for dance and performing. Now I have to go re-watch Every Little Step. ❤️

Terrific. I was so fortunate to see both the original Broadway production in 1975 and the revival 36 years later just after it opened. My parents were theater lovers, and having seen Follies, Company and 1776--original casts all--as a teenager, I knew from the opening number--who can forget the sight of the cast surging forward and flashing their pictures after that momentary blackout--we were in for a special evening. And when the emotional punch at the end left us drained--who made the show and who didn't--the indescribable curtain call was simply...indescribable. I didn't think I'd ever see anything like it again, and I was right--until the revival brought back the tingle of the original. So, thank you ACL revival cast for giving us a connection so needed during these times. And, if I may, you still look great doing that amazing opening number.

LOVED IT! Though I was not blessed with the body structure to dance in this way, I am a dancer in my heart. I saw Chorus Line off Broadway in Wheeling, WV and have watched Chorus Line the Movie so many times, the VHS almost wore out - NOW I have the DVD AND own it on whatever format I have it on!
Experiencing dancers dancing gives those of us who don't dance a sense that we too can dance - it seems so effortless... though we know the truth of the effort that goes into a dancer's training. I see glimpses of that in my granddaughter, Haleigh, who IS a dancer! Dancing is a Gift from God and I and all those who are blessed to watch you share that gift, thank each and every one of you for DANCING! and SHARING THE JOY you experience when you DANCE, DANCE, DANCE!!!

I love this so much!! I’m playing Judy in my university’s currently “paused” production...we were supposed to open last month and I’m really missing this show. I grew up listening to the revival cast album, and your Judy has been a huge inspiration of mine through this process 💜 thank you for the reminder to keep sharing the love and to get up and dance it out in quarantine 🥰

Absolutely love it! I never had the opportunity to see the show live but I remember seeing the movie and dancing, or trying to, for endless hours to the soundtrack and this number was both my nemesis and my favourite. I may have to try it again.
