I can’t wait to see the seed starting mix. I have a backyard garden and start all my plants from seed, and would like to get them off to a better start.
Others have noted coir is sourced from places that often lack fresh water and so sea water is used to process it. They recommend giving it a good soak and rinse out to avoid killing or stunting plants from salt
Excellent composition, and shows a great deal of knowledge by this man. However, it might well be a little too complex for the vast majority of gardeners. Sourcing the various components would likely be very difficult. However, it's is a very informative video, Thank you!
I have a question about the use of the peat moss itself. I’ve heard a lot of mixed answers online that the process of harvesting peat is destructive and there are more sustainable alternatives, one of which is the coconut coir you use. So I wanted to get you or your dad’s take on this.
I hesitate to get into these kinds of discussions so I'll just say that I prefer peatmoss for nutrient value and coir for it being non hydrophobic. Thanks for watching and have a wonderful day!

Hello Gentlemen! Thanks for providing this great wealth of information! I’ve been researching and experimenting over the years, and amending the soil is extremely effective. When I started amending my soil and refused to till my garden, family members thought I was pretty silly! 🙃 BUT… last year I harvested at least 4x the food per square foot than our traditional gardening methods. I love your channel and I’m so happy it popped up in my UA-cam feed! Great advice, specific details, and we share a faith in our Lord Jesus.

Thanks so much for the kind remarks! We are very sincere since gardening has been a way of life for us. You can't buy nutritious produce at the store like you can grow at home, plus you're active, getting great exercise and fresh air!
Question about the amendments : others say that these type of amendments inside pots will wash out / be flushed out over time due to rain and watering. What have you found to be the case ? And just for clarification , this can be used for growing vegetables inside containers with holes at the bottom ? Thanks !!
Sorry to keep bothering you with questions, but got a few more. One, do you think this mix would work well for something like a potted citrus tree? Two, how often do you need to amend the soil or add fertilizer to it and what process do you follow? And do you just use drip irrigation for the watering like you do in ground? Thank you for your patience.
As you can see it's very easy and you can customize it to your particular plants. Things like lettuce or cabbage you can increase the nitrogen sources since it is leaves that you're producing and if you're growing fruit like tomatoes, peppers, etc., you can increase the potassium for fruit size. Plus you know what you're growing is organic and good for you!
I commend your dad for all he does with mixing his potting soil but it sounds like it can be right expensive to make so I’m just going to keep things simple lol😊

any suggestion on raised garden bed soil? I have changed from raised bed to in-ground because of how expensive the raised bed soil was for me. The total cost depends on your cost to source the ingredients. If you buy small quantities, it's not cheap. However, if you buy large bulk quantities, it is very affordable.

Another question. What about things like blueberry bushes? While reading up on the ingredients there are reports that blueberry bushes need a different type of mycorrhizae versus the regular one. Would you recommend we replace VAM and the other product with the one meant for those plants instead?

Hi there! Luke here. Nice to have you here on our channel - and thanks for subscribing! Thanks for your engaging comments! I'll try to help you get this sorted out - you're not the first one to ask - I would ask too. Here's what I have calculated in the past for this coffee can measurement; 6" diameter x 7" height = 197 cubic inches or 13.64 US cups, or 3.23 Litres Let me know if you need any more help!
New to your channel and grateful for the sharing of your growing knowledge. Would it be ok to dissolve the borax in non chlorinated water and spray the pile when mixing for a more even distribution?
What would you recommend as a substitute for animal waste products such as bone meal, etc.? Besides for contribution to confined animal operations, I don't know that I can really trust that those products are free of pharmaceuticals, heavy metals, and other pollutants. For example, a study of oyster shells from various locations showed that 100% of the shells were contaminated with PCBs and other pollutants.
We'll be making a video on that at some point, you could go ahead and try to source your grains locally if possible such as wheat, non gmo corn, peas, garbs or roasted organic soybeans, spelt, oats etc,the only grains we use are green peas, non gmo corn and wheat or spelt the rest is minerals, grit, vitamins ,we haven't bought commercial feed for many many years plus we don't grind our feed so that it doesn't oxidize and loose nutrients and that also saves a lot of work. Thanks so much for watching our videos! Have a blessed day!
I hesitate to answer that as I don't have experience with citrus trees,I'm guessing they would have particular requirements and I'm not familiar with the requirements, sorry, wish I could be more helpful! Blessings!
Hello. Love your videos. I have ordered all the ingredients through your link. Can I use this mix recipe for flowers? Also, I have a mix of topsoil and used horse bedding in my garden can I use your recipe to plant with or will it make my soil to overloaded.
Thanks for using the links! Much appreciated! Yes you certainly can use the mix for flowers though it's probably more than what they really need,I'd recommend using Neptune's rose 2-6-4 in addition. Maybe use Neptune's every other week. You really have to be careful about using any hay in your garden, I found that you can't trust farmers to always tell the truth about what chemicals they use on the hay crop, there's at least 3 forever chemicals they can use and boy you will have real troubles in your garden it takes years to get rid of the effects! But if you have good hay that's a great amendment for your soil, better still is good compost to get your biology rolling which is your most important factor in successful gardening!
Thanks so much for your help. You did not put a link to Bone Char. The only thing I can find on Amazon is ANDERSON’S. BIO-CHAR DG ORGANIC SOIL AMENDMENT…is that the same thing or will it work? Thanks again for your help.
Bone char and bio char are a bit different. We have a commercial source for it and hope to sell it soon. If you leave it out of the mix you will be fine.
Is the gypsom fast acting? Also the borax…laundry detergent borax? lol. Where do you get bone char? I may be wrong but it seems BioChar bone meal may be different than bone char? Or are they the same?
The gypsum is rather slow, yes the boron is just the good old fashioned 20 mule team borax from the grocery store, just be careful how much you put on, it will be very toxic to your plants if too much is added!
The reason I asked about the gypsum is I can only find fast acting gypsum. What brand is good for bone char? Or is biochar/ bone meal the same thing? A lot of these recipes are a little hard to find if just beginning/ learning
Fast acting is ok,I prefer the slow acting. No, bone char is not the same thing as biochar or bone meal, bone char is higher in phosphorus for better root development and blossoms. You can just use bone meal if you don't have bone char.
Here I am, down the rabbit hole. So my apparent it’s phosphate not phosphorus that inhibits mycorrhiza: endo mycos are harmed by soluble phosphate but that shouldnt be an issue with an organic/non-organic phosphorous source. Phosphate bad (chemical salt from phosphoric acid). regular old 'P' good.
Looks like you figured it out, good researching! With organic amendments everything is so much more forgiving. Thanks for watching and have a blessed day!
Hello and thank you for the video. A couple of questions. 1 does this mix last the whole cycle, or is there top dressing required? 2 does this mix need to sit so the microbes break down the nutrients before using or is it ready to go? I want to start no till gardening so would i just ammend the top of the pot and water in each cycle with the fertilizers?
You will need to either add a liquid fertilizer every so often depending on what you're growing and or more amendments scratched into the top inch or two . No need to let it sit before using.
No need for special water at all, people get all hung up on PH and that is sad since using organic amendments and having good biology the PH can take care of itself,I've never tested my soil for anything and have grown many more world record tomatoes than anyone in fact no one has ever grown more than 1 world record in their lifetime, so that's proof that ph can take care of itself. Hope you have a wonderful growing season, if you want you can reach out to me at biscuitridge2004@yahoo.com
To get charcoal, you need to do it a little differently. If you just burn them in an open fire, there will be only ashes left. There are lots of videos on how to make char.
I don't really like bagged compost from big box stores, I'd recommend checking out your local nurseries for organic compost, it'd probably be much cheaper than bagged at the store.
This stuff is seriously starting to add up and hurt the wallet! What would be a few must haves and a few I could do without, to save on costs in terms of the additions
This mix is considered an ultimate mix for a reason! That is why there's so many goodies in it. If you want to make a less powerful mix you could reduce the amount of the goodies in relation to the base ingredients of the mix. Keep the amount of peat moss, Coco coir and perlite the same. Reduce all the other ingredients by half. That will save you some cost and still perform well. Since the ingredients are organic, you can't mess up too much as long as the ratios don't change drastically. Things like worm castings are very flexible, you could keep the amount of worm castings the same if you wanted. Also, the mineral dust like green sand and the basalt are not highly biologically active but feed the microbial activity in the soil so there is some room for error with those ingredients. The idea is to make sure you feed the biology in the soil, because that is what will make your soil nutrients/amendments available to your plants much more than just the raw amendments.
To cut down on costs, you can look into jadam and make your own microbial solution and fertilizer to add to your soils! You can even make inputs out of the dried additives to stretch them even further. But as they say, this really is a great starting mix! I did a familiar mix for my containers a few years back and they're still providing my plants with alot of nutrients.
Outstanding mix!!! My only additions would be some activated biochar and maybe some bat guano….but otherwise this is absolutely wonderful. Love all the trace minerals!!! Delicious!!!! 👏👏👏
😂I’m sure the mix works well, but for the average person to buy all these amendments would be costly. The coir does hold a lot of water. Not all are washed and they say the salt in it needs washed out.
Yes the amendments can be costly, that's why we're opening a website to get them out to you at a better price. The coir we'll be selling is triple washed so it's ready to use. Thanks so much for watching and commenting, we appreciate all the wonderful comments!
You've made compost, not soil which is a naturally occurring substance that takes hundreds of years to be created. It's a really bad idea to remove peat from the land, other more environmentally responsible Countries have all but stopped using it.
If you purchase ingredients using the links below, it helps fund our channel at no cost to you. Thanks a bunch! (I tried to find the best amazon prices:-)

6" diameter x 7" height = 197 cubic inches or 13.64 US cups, or 3.23 Litres
Let me know if you need any more help!
Really enjoying your videos and channel!
Thank you for watching! Really appreciate it!
Would vermiculite be the same as coconut coir??
No, they are totally different substances, what are you trying to do with them, maybe we can help.
New to your channel and grateful for the sharing of your growing knowledge. Would it be ok to dissolve the borax in non chlorinated
water and spray the pile when mixing for a more even distribution?
Yes you can do that, that should work good,it's such a minute amount that there's really nothing to worry about. Blessings!
About how much does the cubic foot of potting mix end up costing? Seems super expensive to me.
Great question! Maybe I can get dad to calculate a number for you. 😊
I would love the chicken feed recipe. I’m not happy with my mill feed anymore.
Ok, we'll try to get a video done on that sometime! 😊
Would you use the same mix for large raised beds? I’m doing hugelculture beds and will add good soil for the last foot.
If you have access to GOOD organic dairy compost you could get by with that and then maybe use the mix for the top 4 or 5 inches
Can I use this for citrus trees and anything else g else around my yard?
Can you tell me what your recommendation would be to put around strawberries…garden straw or pine needles? Thanks so much.
Thank you.
You don't feel a need to raise the PH with lime? Great video.
Absolutely not.
He’s using oyster shell which will balance ph and calcium carbonate
Amen
I’ve read lately that it doesn’t take very much phosphorus ie fish meal and bone char, to be antagonistic towards mycorrhiza.
Here I am, down the rabbit hole.
So my apparent it’s phosphate not phosphorus that inhibits mycorrhiza:
endo mycos are harmed by soluble phosphate but that shouldnt be an issue with an organic/non-organic phosphorous source. Phosphate bad (chemical salt from phosphoric acid). regular old 'P' good.
Looks like you figured it out, good researching! With organic amendments everything is so much more forgiving. Thanks for watching and have a blessed day!
Can I buy a bag of your mixed potting soil?
You can email me at biscuitridge2004@yahoo.com and we can discuss the options, thanks for your interest!
Hi, how big is your coffee can's volume for your overseas viewers? Thanks
One coffee can should be about 1/8 cubic foot. Is that the info you needed?
The can is 6 inches in diameter and 6.75 inches tall, holds about 101 oz. We call it a 5 pound coffee can.
3.13 litre thxs@ingHomesteadingWoodwork
Approx 3.5 litre thxs@@GardeningHomesteadingWoodwork
can't wait to try.... love your tomato
👏
Hello and thank you for the video. A couple of questions. 1 does this mix last the whole cycle, or is there top dressing required? 2 does this mix need to sit so the microbes break down the nutrients before using or is it ready to go? I want to start no till gardening so would i just ammend the top of the pot and water in each cycle with the fertilizers?
You will need to either add a liquid fertilizer every so often depending on what you're growing and or more amendments scratched into the top inch or two . No need to let it sit before using.
@@GardeningHomesteadingWoodwork would i just follow the amendments in this guide and add them to the top? Thanks for the reply and excellent content
What pH does this potting soil end up being with all that calcium and rockdust in it? Do you need to use any special kind of water with it?
No need for special water at all, people get all hung up on PH and that is sad since using organic amendments and having good biology the PH can take care of itself,I've never tested my soil for anything and have grown many more world record tomatoes than anyone in fact no one has ever grown more than 1 world record in their lifetime, so that's proof that ph can take care of itself. Hope you have a wonderful growing season, if you want you can reach out to me at biscuitridge2004@yahoo.com
Is this mix ok for potatoes?
Probably a little more than what you really need but it'll work ok. If you want to save some money you could probably cut it in half on the amounts.
Bone char??? Just burn bones until they turn to ash then pulverize??? Thank you!!!
To get charcoal, you need to do it a little differently. If you just burn them in an open fire, there will be only ashes left. There are lots of videos on how to make char.
Would I need to add compost?
It depends, is this for indoor growing or outdoor growing and what kind of compost, homemade, store bought, nursery bought, bagged?
Raised beds. It would have to be store bought. Any recommendations?
I don't really like bagged compost from big box stores, I'd recommend checking out your local nurseries for organic compost, it'd probably be much cheaper than bagged at the store.
He may be the Elon Musk of making soil!…..😂😂😂😂
👏👏👏👏👏 ❤🕊️
❤
Outstanding mix!!! My only additions would be some activated biochar and maybe some bat guano….but otherwise this is absolutely wonderful. Love all the trace minerals!!! Delicious!!!! 👏👏👏
Nice comment, thanks!
Amazing, God bless you both, Jesus loves you too. Thank you so much for this information. Thank you for helping Jesus spread the Joy.🙂🕊🕊🕊👑🎺🎺🎺🔔🔔🔔💎💎💎🪽🪽🌴
You're welcome! God bless you too, dear one! 😊
@@GardeningHomesteadingWoodwork Is your website up and running?
No, not yet. Working through the tax tracking/reporting, automation, etc.,
In five years of study, I've never seen a "humate" under a microscope. Please expound.
Live Earth is the brand, Humate is the type of soil conditioner/amendment.
Organic Live Earth Humates - amzn.to/3TTUDoa
By the time you buy all that you'd be broke
He put everything but the kitchen sink in there !
🤣
Seems much more expensive than dirt, lol
It is! You get what you pay for. Better production, nutrition and health. 😊
If I made this, the local witch hunters would nab me.
You've made compost, not soil which is a naturally occurring substance that takes hundreds of years to be created. It's a really bad idea to remove peat from the land, other more environmentally responsible Countries have all but stopped using it.
