I just found you and your Dads channel and you guys have got me Excited! I have been gardening for my entire life with my parents. I'm learning So Much from him! My Dad was raised doing the tilling and doing the 10-10-10 thing. We continued it for 55 years of my life. We started doing the adding compost and amending thing about 5 years ago, however Daddy loved to till. Our gardens have improved in growth and yield. Your Dad has helped me look at no till Seriously and drip irrigation. I'd LOVE to hear him go more indepth about planting by the signs and moon phases!!! My grandmother did and I Wish I could remember all she talked about! It's a lost tradition that more need to know about! I want you to Love your Dad He's Special like my Daddy was. I lost him last March. So Love and Learn all you can. You Guy's make a Great Team! Remember Jesus Loves You!
These are great tips, but they remind me of why I’ve gravitated more towards winter sowing over the years. No grow lights, no thermostats, no heat mats. And no hardening off! Just a milk jug, utility knife, water and growing medium. Mother nature does the rest!
@@Mrs.LadeyBug Probably not. I’m in climate zone 6a. We had temps of -20 degrees Fahrenheit, and temps below zero for several weeks in January. Though we did have a mostly mild winter here in southern Wisconsin, most of our winter temps average in the teens and twenties Fahrenheit. There are many videos on YT about winter sowing if you’re interested. The seeds that fare the best are ones that require several months of cold weather to break dormancy.

Thank you, awesome video! One more thing that beginners almost always get wrong on lighting is that they fall for the marketing hype about getting perfect light spectrum, which costs sooo much, when they should be spending their money more on light intensity. Even though the spectrum is far off of perfect and the cheaper lights "waste" light in unused spectra, you can still afford way more light in the proper spectrum if you spend it on cheaper high-intensity multi-use bulbs instead of fancy grow light spectrum bulbs
Some great tips. Do remove covers and heat once germination starts. About the personal heat pad-I wouldn’t advise it for use around water unless it states it’s approved. Not sure, but all the personal use pads should be designed to shut off to avoid burns and would not remain on. I do agree to use a temp regulator when using heat mats for growing. They get way too hot inside-10-20 degrees warmer than air temp. There seems to be a lot of regulators plugged into the germination box. A long 4’ heat mat would probably do the job. Everybody has their own way I guess. Many I see say to saturate soil before filling cells. I agree with you on adding it dry. You are correct that it gets too wet, especially for tiny seeds like poppies. The seeds can rot and the soil molds. I have a pump sprayer I use also as the bottle sprayers break and wear out your hand. My husband and I were laughing because it reminded us of his dad and creations he came up with. 😊
Thanks for your comments! The heat mats do not automatically shut off,that's what you want otherwise you'd have to be turning them back on all the time,and these mats are sealed so water can't get into them and cause any problems. All those things you saw plugged into the germination chamber are not heat mats🤣 there's lights, different circulation fans and one 5 foot commercial heat mat plus different relays to control temperature different at night versus the day and also timer and light and heat controls for the upper indoor lettuce grow.
This is so much better info than every other garden video on youtube that all say the same thing. Growing the seedlings in cooler air is HUGE, not only helps with stronger plants but less chance of fungus, and disease.

Thanks for watching! I only spray to dampen the top layer right after planting but I always bottom water from there on as top watering will tend to cause damping off disease. Hope this helps clarify it for you! Have a blessed day.

I do use pre moistened seed planting soil. Works well for me to get the moisture in it. Otherwise it is very hard for me to get it to accept the water.
That's one of the reasons why I use coco coir. Peatmoss is hydrophobic but coco absorbs water very well - it's like a sponge. So by having added coir in the mix, the coir quickly absorbs the available water and then it slowly hydrates the hydrophobic peatmoss.
Thanks for that Szhulux light info. I have a mix of many different ones and they all accomplish my need. But I always prefer a basic link chain to raise and lower vs those funky cables. Just quicker and you only need one hand. Your videos are very valuable. Wish these garden group junkies would take advantage of these.

been using regular t8 leds 6500k , highest lumens you can find... and it works fine for seedlings. Full spectrum is super expensive and useful if you want to grow plants to maturity / fruiting
Yes you are correct,it's just that a lot of people keep them too far above the plant,there's nothing wrong with T-8s,the full spectrum leds are much cheaper than they used to be and more lumens/ watt so they are cheaper to run as well.

How many days/weeks does it take for a tomato plant to be that 3"-4" optimal size for planting outdoors? Im in northern WI and its always a challenge to know when to start plants indoors. Thanks and keep the video's coming!
You mentioned planting as soon as possible to keep plants healthy and avoid poor production and plant issues. What if the weather is not great for the plant yet, can we just repot to a larger area for the roots until the weather is better?
Thanks for watching! It would be better to wait to start your seeds than to pot up into larger pots,it's usually always better to not get in too big a hurry to start planting seeds,I know we all get spring fever but from experience I'd say wait a bit longer.
Those are fig cuttings getting rooted,there's Chicago hardy,RDB,brown turkey, I-258,LSU purple, BMKK,Brunswick, violet de solices,marsallies black vs,Ronde de bordeaux, italian,honey, red Lebanese bekaa,black Bethlehem.
Your idea sounds logical, but if you did that, it is much harder to quickly fill all the small pony pack cells because the soil is not loose and dry. Uniformity of soil density per cell is much more consistent when gravity filled with dry soil. If pre-wetted, you also have the potential of having air pockets at the bottom of the cells unless you pack in the pre-wetted possibly clumpy soil. It's not called potting mix either. It is seed starting soil mix. They are very different mixes for a reason. Potting mix is usually damp prior to using. Hope these observations help you.😊
We understand that. However, the majority of the small seed germination heating mats are only 20 watts, whereas the mats we recommend are 50 watts and can easily heat the seedlings in much colder environments. Blessings! 😊

Pony packs refers to long ago when these tiny short beers were sold in packs of four. I have not heard the term is many years.

I live in zone 5b Canada and I winter sow in milk Jugs. I use used large yogurt containers for my plant markers as well. Thanks for your tips.

Always bottom water if u can….encourages roots to fill their pot and prevents damping off etc.

All amazing advice, even the techy stuff such as the lighting. One thing I'll add is the upgraded XS1500Pro (same company, Viparspectra) is well worth the extra $20. Incredible coverage, way more even than any other light out there.

I love all the knowledge i get from the both of you i just bought my set up just like Dad's should be here in a few days along with the rest of my minerals to make my own soil mixture! Thought i was doing good till i changed a few things in the garden now we have our first watermelons ever never grown them now I'm ready to plant bush beans and okra already planted pumpkins got lots more seeds coming gonna try corn and potatoes for the first time! Thanks for the great info! I was getting ready to put a fan on some of my seedlings but I see it’s not necessary. Some of my seedlings started turning black but now I’m realizing it was probably because I had those Samsung LEDs too close.
Disappointed that you use peat moss, which is nonrenewable. But I sure do love the content you are sharing and your garden is beautiful. Most importantly, thank you for sharing God’s love.

The vipar sun light can be placed the right height but starting out u only need 50% of the light turned on then ounce they pop then increase

How many days/weeks does it take for a tomato plant to be that 3"-4" optimal size for planting outdoors? Im in northern WI and its always a challenge to know when to start plants indoors. Thanks and keep the video's coming!
It takes 3 to 4 weeks depending on if your using a heat mat or not. Have a blessed day!
You mentioned planting as soon as possible to keep plants healthy and avoid poor production and plant issues. What if the weather is not great for the plant yet, can we just repot to a larger area for the roots until the weather is better?
Thanks for watching! It would be better to wait to start your seeds than to pot up into larger pots,it's usually always better to not get in too big a hurry to start planting seeds,I know we all get spring fever but from experience I'd say wait a bit longer.

Those are fig cuttings getting rooted,there's Chicago hardy,RDB,brown turkey, I-258,LSU purple, BMKK,Brunswick, violet de solices,marsallies black vs,Ronde de bordeaux, italian,honey, red Lebanese bekaa,black Bethlehem.
Add water to your seed planting mix before filling trays.
Your idea sounds logical, but if you did that, it is much harder to quickly fill all the small pony pack cells because the soil is not loose and dry. Uniformity of soil density per cell is much more consistent when gravity filled with dry soil.
If pre-wetted, you also have the potential of having air pockets at the bottom of the cells unless you pack in the pre-wetted possibly clumpy soil.
It's not called potting mix either. It is seed starting soil mix. They are very different mixes for a reason.
Potting mix is usually damp prior to using. Hope these observations help you.😊
The seeding heat maps can come with a thermostat. I was very confused at why you were using a heating pad until you said that.
We understand that. However, the majority of the small seed germination heating mats are only 20 watts, whereas the mats we recommend are 50 watts and can easily heat the seedlings in much colder environments. Blessings! 😊
Many of the cheaper mats don't have thermostats, they just get warm and heat the trays 10-20 F above ambient temperature, even in hot environments.
