+TheTenThousandThings yeah don't worry pal. For some reason Nick thinks we are born knowing this stuff, and takes that as an invitation to poke fun at weak players. We're all here to learn so I don't know why he thinks it's OK to be rude to other players.
As someone who is literally learning how to play go watching your channel. These skill level videos are insanely helpful because I can see more of my own games developing in this video. And I don't have to abstract as many lessons as I do on some of the higher skill level games.
This was great, the humor was on point but really it drives home great points about seeing your own weaknesses and thinking about shape and connection and calm responses
I can explain the thought process behind all moves in this game except for 46 up until 136 when I got bored asking myself that, which is still a much higher percentage than if I tried to explain the moves my opponents usually play. Often it's simply "I want a fight, you can't prevent it" from white and "leave me alone" from black, with a few obvious misreads to top it off. And I still say that even at 5k on Tygem the first 10 moves of the game don't matter at all and playing like white in this game works against me just fine. I think the way to deal with it is to start respecting those moves as sharp invitations to a big fight, the possibility of which must be considered carefully every time again, rather than to call your opponent crazy and get upset after loosing to them, just because their moves look different from the way pros normally play. Of course we can still laugh at a game like this and the slightly provocative video title certainly adds to the views. Still, the player who wins a game of go, at least until a level that I'll probably never get to experience, is the one who's better at reading and finding the right fighting shapes. The moves leading up to the fight don't matter very much.
Oh god I remember having a game like this. Dude was black, played tengen, I was like "Sure, why not", I played a corner, he invaded 3 3, I played a corner, 3 3 invasion, corner, 3 3, corner, 3 3. That game was one of the worst, most frustrating experiences of my life. He didn't play to win or secure territory or have fun. He played to be a dick. He had no overall plan, every move he played was there purely to get on my nerves. It was like trying to argue with a three year old.
Just watched this last night... right after getting an email that you weren't going to be able to teach Monday's class, coincidence or did you hurt yourself reviewing this game?
"So...this is a real Go game between two real players; one of which doesn't know what to do and is freaking the hell out right now, and the other one's a jackass." *sips* It's just like if I played a game with you: only eight moves in and I'm already dead.
We have the same problem in chess: Some players are just idi ... eeeeh ... playing weird, crazy, far out ... but the problem is: If you don't know how to deal with it they feel very proud winning a poorly played game! ;O) I'm Kyu 57 after having found Go recently ... but instructive to see what I SHOULDN'T !!!
why did nick sibicky say black shape was excellent in minute 9 if as a beginner im usually told empty triangles are bad shapes? was it because his empty triangle was immune to cutting and peeping?
If you sticked to learning Go you probably know by now. So sorry to answer your really old comment, but it popped up quite high in the comment section and nobody answered yet. The triangle was full since it "enclosed" an enemy stone. If you do a full triangle, you can't be cut and shorten a liberty of the enemy stones.
7:51 I don't think the sequence would be played like that and I disagree that E4 was a bad move. If white were to play C2, I would call that a blunder on white's part. Black can just hane at F3, and it makes many of white's responses terrible. For instance, if white tries to play C4, black ataris C4 having white capture or extend and then black can fix at F5 which is gote but traded the corner for pretty intense influence where white is almost fully surrounded (not fully if he descended as he undercuts the left side). Black could have a great game there. At the same time, I don't think a 20K is going to play any of this correctly. You can be 20K or even stronger with just knowing the rules and that the corner > side > center. They don't really read, or study joseki, or know how to use influence. So even in a good variation, they can still easily lose any advantage they gained.
20 minutes in I can't watch anymore. If you want to learn, watch players who are better than you, right? Awesome of you to do reviews for new players, though! I'm not much better than either of these guys, not sure how much good a single review would do me, though!!
sometimes i think your reactions are too harsh, like not everyone knows a lot of theory through books or teachers from the beginning, some just learn by playing and at that level it's clear the plays are gonna be terrible sometimes, but that said i did laugh at some comments and reactions and in the end there's still a lot to be learned from your lecture... but as a teacher i thought you had more patience xDD
My reaction to the moves in this game are the same as when I'm looking at a Pro game. I don't understand it.
Wow I'm sorry I put you through this Nick. I've since become a little stronger and it's super embarrassing to see these mistakes. -CarpentersKeys

I know this is a year late but know that it's used as a learning experience for a 24k like myself. As long as your stronger now its good right?
@@heyandy889 go is really Dark Souls in disguise - very salty community XD lol
@@Invisible-Rhino To my observations not "salty" just elitist!

I love when white said "we both did a few mistakes". And in reality almost every move was a mistake.
I found this video hilarious. Nick, your reactions to their moves are priceless
"Both you played in this area for no reason and white died."
Best line of the game.
Cracked me up
This was great, the humor was on point but really it drives home great points about seeing your own weaknesses and thinking about shape and connection and calm responses
you get a happiness like for that review. I really enjoyed watching

This was hilarious. I require more
I'm 4kyu and I can recognize these mistakes in my own game lol. I guess we can all learn from 20kyus haha
I know the video is older but I really enjoy his speechless moments...

>or have fun
maybe people can have ideas of what's fun that are different from yours
I'm halfway through and in laughing hard
I remember when I was about 19-kyu and I don't think I was this bad. Well, we all start somewhere. Kudos for black willing to send this game in.
Troll style can win games up to 9k.
42:40 empty triangle is good for once wow
your comment made this game entertaining nick 😂

It felt as if white is playing a tsuke-only challenge.
Old video but extremely helpful, im trying to make 20 kyu.
I love your tone when trying to find the method to their madness. How many crazy pills did you take to get through this game?

Can you do a lesson on one of the games between Fan Hui and AlphaGo?
+Mark Macrae So exciting! And i really want to see the games AlphaGo vs Lee Sedol covered too!
Im like 25 kyu and what is happening there?!?
+Kenneth Irgendwas (Whyzocker) You see, here's what's happening:
1: Black plays the corner
2: White smokes crazy pills
3: ???
4: White wins.
