    Hello John, I am from the Midwest U.S.A. and the green coloring on this new master is accurate to real life. During large/dangerous tornado producing storms (we call them super cells), the green hue in the sky happens in real life during these dangerous storms. I have witnessed it many times over the decades.
    Love your content as always. Cheers!

      That's exactly what Jan De Bont says in the new interview on the disc Bushyman. The way some had reported it to me I was expecting the whole film to have a green bias but that certainly wasn't the case. I suspect someone learned the colour palette had been changed for that one sequence from that interview and then used it for a bit of a negative review video to generate views. People seem to prefer a bit of moaning.
      John.

    Hi John!!! Here's an example of why I like projectors so much over TVs, the natural feel of the image, especially in this type of film... it's spectacular.

      Projection is cinema José. I think that's the best tagline to put to it. But I do find it's possible to make modern video projection look like the films we all used to be able to see in cinemas rather than the comparatively poor video projection most cinemas are presenting today. In other words, we're better at it at home than many of the so-called professionals.

    John my friend and I watch every video you make. You are the only person we have found on the UA-cam that really knows his stuff when it comes to movie formats and how they are transfered to disc's. Keep up the good work. Greeting from Kingston canada. P.s your IMAX presentation from the projection booth at BFI was incredible.

      It's only that one sequence. The rest of it looks almost the same as the LaserDisc but LD was an earlier technology and didn't have the colour and density capabilities of 4K and let alone film.

    Twister is one of my favorite movies of the 90s. I saw it opening day on 35mm with SDDS sound and it was amazing! The “going green” sequence being changed doesn’t bother me because it was changed to be more accurate to what happens in reality. I have the original blu-ray (which is an awful transfer) and to me it sounds like the dialogue is clearer on the Atmos track than I remember. I owned this movie many times… laserdisc, DVD, DTS DVD, Blu-Ray and now the 4K. The 4K definitely makes up for the terrible job they did on the blu-ray. Great video! I look forward to your thoughts on Nightmare On Elm Street.

      The NTSC LaserDisc was always good enough for me Anthony but a 4K disc was too tempting to ignore. I too felt the same way about the 'greenage' but the way some had gone on about it made me think the whole film had been changed. It's one sequence so even if I hadn't have liked it, it wouldn't have spoiled the film for me.

    Also from midwest USA and can attest to the accuracy of the "greenage". Being 11 years old at the time this was released this was my most viewed movie in the theater, still to this day. Must have gone 6 times. A special moment recently sharing this 4K disc experience with my own children. They loved it and finally understood my enthusiasm.

      It's odd that some people seem to have made a fuss about the 'greenage' but I suppose a thumbnail that looks like it's going to be a big moan fest will always generate more views so that's why. I'm not in the mid-west of the USA but heading west from London along the M4 this afternoon we were presented with angry skies that almost resembled the stormy skies portrayed in Twister. It felt like evening was closing in but then the sun came out.
      Sorry it took me a couple of days to reply to this. I couldn't get on-line.

    Great review. Twister and Dante’s Peak had a strange air of miscasting around both films. Yet somehow it worked. Bill Paxton was hardly a leading man but with turns in One False Move and later Frailty proved he could hold his own with an ensemble. Seeing Hoffman in any role is a pleasure and Helen Hunt, still coming off her success on TV, did a funny nod to this movie when she was caught playing the game ‘twister’ in a Mad About You episode. Looking forward to Dante’s, the special effects were great and the film managed to squeeze a few notably dramatic scenes with the mom and Pierce, pleasantly unexpected.

      There were some great cinema films back then Singin. A year or two later and I started to notice the decline in image quality. Thankfully, Twister did not suffer in this regard owing to being shot full frame anamorphic but in 1997 the downturn to Super 35 commenced en masse and this was to facilitate easier (i.e. faster and cheaper) computer generated animation.

      Morning Cloudy. I hope your latest IMAX upload is doing as well as some of your others because it deserves to.
      I was only thinking about you and 4K discs last night because you probably would enjoy the whole process. Getting all the equipment to start with can be a bit expensive though because to get the best out of 4K discs it needs a video projector. But apart from that and a 4K UHD Blu-ray player that would be all that is required to make a good start. If you have a wall that can be pained white then that will set you on the right path. That's all my home cinema is when you analyze it. And don't let anyone ever tell you that an expensive screen needs to be purchased because that's nonsense. The first discs to purchase would be the Christopher Nolan IMAX films. You will immediately see the superiority of image quality that the IMAX and standard 70mm sequences offer. But they do pale compared to the real McCoy 15/70 IMAX prints. However much they pale though, they still look amazing. Start with the best and even shrunk down to home video, they're still the best. Start with crap and whatever is done to that crap it's still crap at the end of it... with one possible exception that I've seen so far and that's American Graffiti but that's another story.
      John.

      @moviecollector5920 Hello John. I just wanted to say that I saw Dante's Peak, and I thought it was alright,..pretty good. To me, it has tonal issues. Twister is a disaster movie, but it manages to feel like an adventure throughout. With Dante's Peak, we get dramatic moments and sad moments, and borderline horrific moments. A lot of tonal shifting. Had it been more consistent with the tone, I might have liked it more. But still,it is not a bad film..very interesting, actually.

  • @DisposableSupervillainHenchman

    IIRC, the bit in the teaser with the car and the tractor flying towards it was originally just some test CGI ILM did to show if they could do it convincingly or not. And either the director and/or the producers were so impressed with that fragment that they put it in the teaser.

    • @moviecollector5920
      @moviecollector5920  3 дні тому

It was always one of the best sounding films and I would have very much liked to have been at your Courtyard picture house for the 35mm screening. SDDS was a really good sound system. They used their Atrac compression system which ended up on their minidisc format. It used to be part of the experience seeing movies, usually in the large screens, when the sound format trailer was played before the film. I saw Twister in DTS at the local Warner Village which had a THX screen. So....DTS trailer...then the loud THX trailer and this movie.. ahh good days...

      Was that High Wycombe Quinn? At the time there were only four THX cinemas in Britain and two of them were in Leicester Square, one in High Wycombe and another which you may now be able to educate me about. SDDS was sometimes 8 channel sound but more often 6 channels. I would be able to put the kit on my Kinoton FP20 but it's a large add-on and the processor is even bigger so I'd better resist that temptation.

      Morning Eric. It's likely the previous releases of Twister were taken from prints and only now has the negative been transferred for a home video disc. It makes a difference.
      LaserDisc was the king of home video for many years. It couldn't compete with the great Super 8 releases throughout that period but LD was a darn site cheaper. If you had the same film on Super 8 and LD though the sound from the LD could be locked into the Super 8 and that gave the ultimate home cinema experience. It really was cinema in the home.

      Wifey and I were just talking about how it was possible with regard to Twister for full frame anamorphic 35mm to blend in so seamlessly with CGI in 1996 but then during the ensuing years the same process became such comparative crap. Something must have changed with regard to how computer animation was incorporated into 35mm film frames because otherwise it makes no sense. The adoption of Super 35 more generally clearly caused a reduction in general image quality but why would the CGI in so many films have stood out like a sore thumb compared to films such as Twister? It's a conundrum.
      I'll probably watch the 4K of A Nightmare On Elm Street on Saturday evening so if all goes to plan I'll get a review up a few days later.
      John.

      Twister didn't appear on DVD here first unless I'm remembering incorrectly. Another great review. I didn't know they retrospectively made the adjustment to the sky color for the one scene. Also interesting is the difference between projection and TV display. I'm curious what 4K blu rays will look like in the future when technology has advanced even further to better process the data on the discs to render the intended image.

      Blu-ray is wonderful Andy, particularly when taken from the same master as the equivalent 4K. It's just that the colour and density is comparatively limited and generally after you've watched a 4K the Blu-ray looks poor. It's not, but that's the impression it gives directly after viewing the 4K.
      John.

  • @MsMarco6

    Thinking about the colour difference between your TV & projector, I seem to remember you showing us your projector once.
    I could be completely misremembering, but I believe it was only capable of the SRGB colour gamut as opposed to the much wider BT.2020 gamut used by 4ks (and yes Twister uses the full BT.2020 gamut not P3).
    Now I don't know anything about your TV but it wouldn't surprise me if it was atleast capable of the wider P3 gamut.
    So that may be the explanation, if I'm right then your projector would be limiting the green colour of the skies which are well beyond the SRGB range.
    On top of that I have no idea if your TV is calibrated but if not it'll be boosting the colour further.
    So yeah, I know that was kinda technical but it seems a likely explanation as Twister pushes those HDR colours hard as shown by HD-Numérique's comparison.
    and personally I remember the green being pretty intense on my QD-OLED which should be the artistic intent as my TV is calibrated. But personally I don't mind, it's a matter of taste & I liked it.
    But anyway this explanation makes more sense atleast to me than screen size being the culprit.

    • @moviecollector5920
      @moviecollector5920  Годину тому

      Always bear in mind that OLED tellies do exaggerate colour. I think they were an attempt to make everything look like Technicolor but it always looks too fake to me. The UHZ50 video projector doesn't have such rich colour as the UHD550X so all these systems are different. I'll have to take a look at Twister on the 550X to see if that messes it up a bit like your OLED displays it. I do have the discs to do the so-called 'calibration' and I did go through it all on the telly but it looked identical at the end of it other than being a bit too bright so I easily put that right. But many people are making money out of doing the same thing on a 'professional' basis and good luck to them.

    Hi John, great review. Twister is a favourite of ours too. We saw it opening day at the big UCI in Edinburgh and enjoyed it so much, we went back and watched it again! There was a German special edition blu ray release a few years ago which has 2 discs. Film is on both, but one disc is Dolby Atmos and the other disc has Auro 13.1 3D sound. If you can decode that one it's epic ! Not watched the 4k yet, my wife and I will be kicking back this weekend for a viewing. Fasten the seat belts, it's going to be a bumpy ride ! Take care John and keep up the excellent work.

      That's a shame db because I'd assumed the Turbine release came with the original cinema soundtracks. What a shame. It's still very good with this new 4K but then Twister always sounds sensational so it's a minor gripe and probably just that I know the film too well so can spot when things aren't sounding quite right. The image on the 4K is akin to owning your own 35mm print. There should be some film projector drumming in the background just to complete the illusion.

    Didn't mind the new colouring tbh. What irked me a little on the uhd was there was a new added sound effect that didn't work. Where you see a storm in the distance, they added a clap on thunder that sounded almost cartoonish.
    I have a region 1 dvd that runs DTS at 1.5mbs. Higher than my region 2's 754kps Dts.
    The original blu ray has a powerhouse of a sound mix. Not watched it in a couple of years but might be the best way at home.

      I wonder if Brighton ever got premiere house master prints Paul. I expect it was too remote for that but you never know. Morning Jim. It's probably going to be A Nightmare On Elm Street next. As for that green sequence, try subduing your colour because it was far too green on my telly but not on the video projector. The setup of both is similar but the telly seems to be compressing the colours and that's why so many people are having colour issues throughout much of their 4K collection.

      I can't recall how A Nightmare On Elm Street looked in the cinema but it must have been okay otherwise I'm sure I'd remember. It was pretty scary though as I was almost entirely alone in that huge Leicester Square Theatre auditorium so perhaps that distracted me. But if the 4K is good then the master print I saw will have been too.
      You started a good theory about tellies compressing the colours on 4K discs. That 'greenage' sequence in Twister was certainly exaggerated on the telly but wasn't through the video projector. It's only short anyway so I can't understand why some people made such a fuss about it other than to generate views with a moaning UA-cam video.
      Dante's Peak will surely be issued a while later over here because it's a big title. Likely that Universal will issue it themselves I think.

      Evening Clark. Jan De Bont does explain that single sequence where the green colour palette was applied to the sky so take a look a that. It's actually an interesting interview. Perhaps what he doesn't make obvious is that colour grading on film is not an exacting science. If they'd have tried that much green then the whole image would have been green and not just the sky. With Davinci Resolve grading today, clever video editors/graders can use nodes to modify specific pixels or areas of pixels.

    • @moviecollector5920
      @moviecollector5920  3 дні тому +1

      I don't know the answer to that one I'm afraid Filippo. The theory is that tellies compress the colour and that is what is resulting in so many people complaining about some of the very good recent 4K releases. It seems to make sense because of the size differential but if anyone out there comes along with a seven or eight foot wide telly and tells me they're having the same problem as with more normal size tellies then it will be back to the drawing board for a new theory. I can understand people not being too happy if they're getting the excessive colour hue I showed in that 'greenage' sequence through my own telly but it was only the one sequence. Other releases have caused wailing and gnashing of teeth due to complaints of colour bias all the way through but that has not given the same results via my video projector nor Trevor's over at Double Bill Movies.

    Watched this movie once, and that was in the cinema in 1996. Good fun, but oddly I’ve never happened to watch it again. The 90s was the last great decade for cinema I feel, a few years into the new millennium it started to go downhill.

    • @moviecollector5920
      @moviecollector5920  2 дні тому

      I started to notice the downturn in image quality from about 1997/1998. That was the switch to Super 35 becoming more prevalent to facilitate easier, cheaper CGI. Then the 2K digital intermediate started to come in from 2000 and that made the downgrade to image quality a whole lot more obvious. Then Michael Mann started shooting his productions with HD video and that ultimately stopped me frequenting cinemas with any regularity. Most people didn't notice a thing.
      Twister is a big screen film. But if you saw it originally on a big screen you'll know how good it was and the impact will remain even if watching on a smallish telly.

Just noticed that The Sugarland Express has gone up for preorder and seems to be a very limited release. Anybody know when To catch a thief is coming out ? Nobody has it in stock release date was given as 14 October in UK. Thanks as always for the work you do John

      Evening Mike. I don't tend to know when any of the releases are coming out but I always look at the HMV emails which tend to alert me to most of them. Second Sight and now 88 Films send me press releases so that helps. I suppose I could sign up to them all and maybe that's what we all should do.
      By the way, Sugarland Express was first issued in 1979 or 1980. It was a Universal 8 2x400ft Super 8 release that was a successful cut down of the film to about 33 minutes. It's better than the complete film and much more repeatable!

      It's like having a 35mm print on a disc so I think you'll be pleased with it. As for Terminator 2, Ben Wales is bringing his own 35mm print up to screen it here so I must try to shoot a video of that. Shame I don't have the 4K wax release to compare it to but I do have it full length on Super 8, LaserDisc and DVD.

      @@1958_gibsonlespaul There were 70mm blow-ups for premiere houses and I saw one of those. Actually, I shot some Super 8 of the exterior of the Odeon Leicester Square while it was on and included it in a video about the last Terminator sequel 'Dark Fate'. That was over four years ago now but it's still up on UA-cam. As for the sound, it was sensational as I was six track magnetic on 70mm at the time but the 35mm prints were optical Dolby Stereo. I don't think the early attempt at digital cinema sound were applied to T2. It will still sound fabulous. Dolby Stereo is much underrated today but I sometimes find it to be better than the digital sound.

    I have some reels of cine film which my friend got me from a jumble sale the reason they got them for me is because I'm a great fan of john Wayne's the alamo two of the reels have the alamo Richard Stillgoe BBC wrote on them I have no projector so can't view them but the film is very wide I don't know the gauge the other reels look like 8mm so I was wondering if I sent some pictures or the reels to you could you let me know what they are thanks

    • @moviecollector5920
      @moviecollector5920  Годину тому

      Just measure the width of the film John. If it's 16mm wide then you have 16mm film. If it's 8mm wide then it is one of two 8mm gauges; the first is the original 8mm which has an image area of 5mm and larger sprocke holes whereas the second is Super 8 which has an image area 6mm wide and a tiny sprocket hole. It really is that simple. I'd be surprised if the width of the film was more than 16mm but if it is then reply on here and we'll work it out.

    Hi John! Loved this 4k and don't mind the green look at all. I remember seeing Dante's Peak in a Future Shop store many years ago as a display in their tv surround sound rooms they used to have. You could wander in sit and watch while they attempted to make the sale lolololo...The bass was rumbling and the storm crackling as they tried to navigate across that bridge hahah Yes I would think Dante's Peak offers great 4k potential. Just purchased Nightmare on Elm Street this afternoon so look forward to your thoughts. I'm hearing great things about it. Meanwhile hope all is well across the pond and all the best D in BC!

      Morning Dave. I'll probably watch A Nightmare On Elm Street on Saturday evening if you fancy flying over. That can happen though so it's probably not a universal issue with all home systems. Twister always sounds fabulous irrespective of the format and any minor gripes I may have with the new track. The image quality is the big thing and on this 4K it's akin to having a 35mm print.
