I'm pretty sure when Alicent said, "you are sworn to me" and Criston Cole responded "as your protector" he meant that he is sworn to protect her, but does not have to listen to her if she commands him to cut a kid's eye out.

Just like they totally missed that Aemond pointed out that Aegon was betrothed to Helaena and started talking about Aemond as if he was weird for talking about marrying his sister. It's like they're not even paying attention.
Vhagar's design is truly beautiful. She really looks like the grumpy old lady from the block

Mickey is the only one who understands Alicent. I'm saying this as someone who's team Rhaenyra. Alicent never had a say in anything in her life. Her choices were made for her. She was forced to marry the king and give birth to his children, all while watching Rhaenyra do whatever she wants. And yes her mistake is to let her emotions control her behavior, but there IS a reason behind her actions. People act like she's the way that she is for no reason.
Yes! Even as someone who generally favors Rhaenyra, it's so frustrating to see so many people dismiss Alicent like this. She's so well written, and Olivia Cooke is so good, and her motivations (whether you side with her or not) make total sense. There's just so much wrong with the way people think about her character. Which, I suppose, should not truly be that surprising.
She is well written, yes. I understand her bitterness and frustration. However, she is as Marketa said a couple episodes ago " someone who is mad that somebody else had their student loans paid off ". All Alicent will do is perpetuate the cycle that caused her grief in the first place.

Just to clarify. The kids are not cousins. Aegon, Aemond and Helena are all Rhaenrya’s half-siblings. So they are Aunt and Uncles to Rhaenyra’s children, Jacearys and Lucearys

I honestly haven’t hated anyone in this show. I just empathize, pity and try to refrain from judging. That’s how much I connect to them all.
Hear, hear! I am wondering why so many people are so quick to judge.
@@kittyorasheepy It’s so easy because it’s the easiest path to pick sides. For me it’s impossible most of the time because I was raised with a psychologist/historian’s perspective on the world (knowing and understanding and analyzing but never being judgmental) but even more so here. I just feel everyone is really messed up but they also have slivers of humanity that I see. Like Viserys, I just don’t want them to fight but I know that’s a losing battle. If I were to be anyone, I’d be someone living outside of all this conflict. Say a Tyrell in the north growing my crops or a Stark guarding the north against what’s to come. It’s hard to be noble, uncorruptrd and preserve your righteousness in the south.
Y’know what, I am glad I found you in this sea of comments. You totally opened my eyes to something, because I totally feel you. And I had to realise something from your comment because I am currently studying counselling. And I am just feeling like an island sometimes in the sea of comments and reactions- because I am not looking for characters to root for, but looking to understand each character and learn from it and analyse how they came to their decisions.
So, in a way, your reply woke me up and made me realise a potential blindspot that I may have.
Honestly the best way to watch it, I can't help but hate Cole and the Hightowers but props to you for actually vibing with the actual core of the show

Never forget that Otto pushed Viserys to make Rhaenyra his heir because of his problems with Daemon. Just think what would have happened if Otto had left things alone in terms of the succession, but still promoted Alicent to marry Viserys. Aegon would have automatically been made the crown prince without any of the disputes happening between all the different interested parties.

If Viserys did not name Rhaenyra as heir and remove Daemon, he would not have been pressured into marrying so soon, and had he accepted Daemon asking Rhaenyra in marriage, he would not need to even marry. Daemon and Rhaenyra would have heirs.
Technically, by law, a son comes before a brother (like the same reason why Jon Snow would've had a stronger claim than Viserys or Daenerys)

You got to hand it to the stunt team. As far as little kids fighting and punching each other this is probably the best and most realistic I've seen on TV.
that whole children fight scene had better choreography than entire Rings of power season so far.

Yeah, watching kids fight this brutally is horrifying to watch, haven't felt this way since that Lord of the Flies film.
Especially when Luke, the youngest, did that scream of fear/rage, such a realistic response that little brothers do when they are pushed beyond the limits. He didn't attack until his brother was in danger. Such great acting and direction all around!
The kid actors did a fantastic job; they were credible before, during and after the fight scene.
For anyone still wondering or still sore about why they had to re-cast the actors instead of going the "age-up" prosthetics/make-up route, this episode was Exhibit A for why they didn't.
As much as I liked them, there's no way in Seven Hells that the younger actresses would have been able to carry that confrontation scene the way their older counterparts did in this episode.
You never know. I loved the old cast but i'm starting to like this new cast just as muxh

Aemond was defending himself but took it too far by trying to smash jace with a rock. Luc was protecting his brother. Laena’s girls don’t yet understand how dragons are not something you automatically get but need to be accepted by the dragon and bond with.

Also helaena is "not a weirdo" She predicts future, as in one of episodes she predicted Aemond will close/lose an eye first for him to get a dragon.

Vhagar wasn't trying to shake off Aemond, she's just too big and he's very small. I also like that he tells Rhaena she should have claimed Vhagar if she so wanted her. He is right, dragons are not possessions that get passed around through a will, you have to be brave enough to claim them, and Vhagar being the biggest dragon you have to be quick or someone else will take her.

Rhaenyra was definitely in on it. She talked about the sea being an escaped when she mused over the Velaryons having the right of it. Her & Daemon plotted it out, and told Laenor that the best way he could serve her as her husband was to disappear so that she could marry Daemon, but it would also allow him to potentially live a happy life with Qarl, away from the eyes of Westeros. It was a win-win for everyone but whoever they sacrificed for the plan.

It honestly makes me roll my eyes when people immediately start hating on Aemond during the confrontation. He didn't steal the dragon, and yeah, he said some pretty shitty things, but he also didn't go looking for a fight. He pushed one of the girls after she came at him, and the other punched him, so he punched her back. It escalates from there but I wouldn't call him the aggressor.
Dissing one's dead mother is definitely looking for a fight.
He definitely stole the dragon and through being insensitive, was the antagonizer. In fact someone just said it better in the comments, "He stole their chance at bonding with the dragon."

If you wanna talk about how it was their mother's dragon so they should get to claim it then the same applies to Viserys, Vhagar's rider before Laena was Baelon, Viserys and Daemon's father so Viserys should have claimed her.

Also loved the parallel to Rhaenyra's earlier comment, "Fire's a prison. The sea offers an escape" and all the conversation around it. In the end, she stays in her fire prison paying the price for the throne and getting what she wants (Daemon) in the process, and Laenor escapes with his love through water. Beautiful detail.
I mean, I generally side with Rhaenyra on this show. But dear god, their (and most reactors) willful misunderstanding and mistreatment of Alicent's character, is so frustrating. Especially because of how amazing Olivia Cooke is on the show. She's communicating everything people need to know, both spoken and unspoken. But people just ignore it, because, "Yay, Targaryens!" The willful ignorance is kinda fucking disturbing, honestly.
The beautiful in this scene is seeing a glimpse of shot of future hand of the queen. Corlys velaryon helds rhaenyra’s hand with blood.

I don't think covering up kinslaying, including the murder of the Hand of the King is very decent or lawful...

Aemond bonding with Vhagar is seriously the best moment this season. Such a beautiful scene when he's calming her and that flight... amazing. The boy is my favorite character after this episode.

Dude on far left needs to read up on Maegor the Cruel Aegon’s second son, he went about with the same ego about blood of the dragon and went to war with the faith of seven and killed his nephew, he also took like 4 wives and killed anybody he wanted, eventually he was found impaled on the iron throne with his wrists cut, you can’t just be a tyrant regardless, and having dragons doesn’t make you bullet proof.
Even Aegon the conqueror knew that and took L’s when necessary, he could’ve continued his war for Dorne and kill thousands of more people but he knew when to stop and when to assert authority. What? Demanding that one child be physically disfigured as punishment is insane!!! Yes she has a right to be mad but asking for Luc's eye was beyond unnecessary and cruel. Luc was just defending his brother and cousins. Was it wrong for Rhaena to attack Aemond? Yes. But all children in this scene were failed by their parents (minus maybe Luc and Jace who were just defending their cousins). Baela and Rhaena were taught to lash out with aggression most likely by Daemon. And Aemond was taught to be a cruel egotistical judgemental bully by Alicent, Aegon, and Criston. They need strong guidance not physical punishment.

Rhaenyra can't marry Daemon with Laenor alive. Aegon the Conqueror was very much the exception; when he came to Westeros and conquered it, he was already married to his sisters and no one could do anything about it. Maegor the Cruel (third king of the dynasty, second son to Aegon) went to war against the Faith for his right to polygamy and he did so many terrible things that when he died his sucessor Jaehaerys (who we met in the premiere's Great Council prologue) had to agree to end the practice of polygamy to achieve peace; in exchange the Faith officially accepted Targaryen incest instead of just turning a blind eye to it like they did with Aegon. So, for most of the Targaryen dynasty, including in House of the Dragon, they are allowed to intermarry; but NOT to have several wives or husbands.
Also, at the moment theres no precedent of Targaryen kings or princes having bastards much less naming them heirs. The other Targaryen monarch that had bastards was named Aegon the Unworthy and is hated for making way for the Blackfyre rebellions. I also felt like this episode was filmed during the noon time. The shadows did not match up with the time it was meant to be and it gave off that feeling of when editors just put a dark blue filter over it and bring down the contrast as if we can’t notice that it’s not actually night.
