I went from not knowing how to make a drum loop to producing hip hop beats for local artists in the area all because of your videos. You're the best at what you do, thanks for helping out the newbies in the community. If you've got t-shirts with a fat nfxbeats logo, sign me up.
@festodeejay When you open the piano roll, above the keyboard notes located on the left there should be a coloured rectangle for choosing the colour ur notes will be drawn in. To the lower right-hand side of that rectangle, there's a small button with a white inversed "E" shape representing 5 notes from a keyboard (3 white, 2 black). This indicates the Keyboard view mode you're in. Click on it to change the view mode, making the note names appear on the keyboard keys like they are in the video.
@IFrancyISantosI maybe in a future tutorial. The thing about A minor and C Maj is that they are easy to remember because they are played on the white keys. They are used a lot when teaching.
Watching this video made me realize that I've done a huge mistake by not taking the proper time to learn music theory. Not only is is it informative and useful, it's also really fun to learn. Thank you!
Great tutorial. Just noticed I've been doing this with my music already without even knowing why it sounded good. This will help so much when stuck brainstorming for new material, just start with chords and mess around with all the notes in key. Thanks for the help!
Just wanted to say that you are a great teacher! And with something that i really enjoy learning about you have helped me immensely, Thank you so much!
Man! I've needed that ghost channel feature for years. I never even knew it was there. That's going to help a lot with more complex chord movements, modulations, chord replacements and so forth. I'd just been using trial and error. FL Studio is so much more than people think.
Thanx 4 all ur vids Nfx. I remember I use to watch all ur vids when i first started producing and using fl studio. It helped me so much and Ive improved a whole lot now. Keep doing yo thang homie lol
"Good" is relative when it comes to music. All i was saying, knowing theory is like a user-manual for playing and making music.Getting comfortable with instrument of your choice + at least basic theory (scales, intervals chords, timing, etc) will make life easier even for people with perfect pitch. When I was beginner my songs were limited to simple chord progressions because i dint know better and i was always struggling to come up with something that dint sound like a amateurish improvisation
It's usually wise to write the melody line to mirror the bass. Ie. when the bass goes down the melody goes up and vice versa. For example this melody would probably sound better if it went upwards to C6 from the A5, because the bassline goes down to F3 from A3
There is a formula for major and minor keys of each root note. Search "Major scale formula" and "Minor scale formula" on youtube and you will find them. If you understand whole steps and halfsteps I'll help right here right now. Major Scale: From the root note take a Whole, Whole, Half, Whole, Whole, Whole, Half. Each key that you hit is in the major scale of the root note you used (in the same key) Minor Scale: From the root note, Whole, Half, Whole, Whole, Half, Whole, Whole.
Thank you so much! You are a fantastic teacher. Quick question: Given that this video is about making a song in a particular key - how are you able to go from A Minor to F Major? Aren't those chords in different keys/scales? What am I missing?
Maybe it was a different reply I am thinking about, but I went into detail about the process of coming up with your own music theory when you are self taught. Everyone is using some kind of theory at the end of the day, but my point is, not everyone has to have your traditional lessons in music theory to make music or even great music. I just personally know people who are like this and they make some of the best music you've never heard...literally...
VERY GOOD TUTORIAL,i already knew this but anyway ,it did not hurt a lil recapitulation. NFX Thank You again for all the good tutorials you are posting out there for us.
@romezuniverse to the best of my knowledge the bones are just what make up ur save file pretty much - bones are like the values and information in your synthesizers; if u dont use bones youd have to re do all ur sounds each time u open ur project... thats probably not even what project bones are but thats what ive always thought they were
It's funny, but I've taught myself many of the things in your tutorials. It's just nice to confirm the things I taught myself and know that I've been able to pick up on some music theory all by ear.
Yeah, but how do i know in what key i am? Are all 4 Bars in one key? .. Or are these 4 Bars devided in four keys? If they are in one key, how to figure out in what key i am? You know what i mean? Greetings from germany
and on the other hand...I know even more people who know a great deal of music theory but still don't yet have either the playing ability (speed, timing, etc) or the improvisation ability of the few who I know don't have traditional or classical training. We are the ones who hated learning how to play other peoples songs and wanted to learn how to make our own...people still trying to learn greatness when it's actually earned with our ocd like tendencies. It's what's behind the theory...
Might i add that you should watch out for the bleeding echo of that last 8th note into the first note in the bassline. I'm sure you already know that though.
Deadmau5 used harmony/chords improvisation VST tool for years and few weeks ago it became available to the public. Composing music without at least basic theory knowledge is more like struggle instead of fun creative process. But of course, you can make great music anyway. I just feel like schooled songwritters (and musicians) tend to be ahead of someone sitting in room producing with his DAW without knowing theory...
HOW DO YOU Extract INSTRUMENTALS FROM a song with out having it sound distorted?? Im making a mixtape and Im trying to find new songs I can put on my mixtape I would appreciate the help!!!!!
Hey I was trying to do this my self today but my chords are rushed "pressed" while yours are paced "played. They don't sound right at all. I sent you a PM. Please write back I could really use your help.
if both of them are in major or minor scales, you can transpose one of them to the other's key. for example, one is in Cmajor, the other one is in Emajor; you can move Cmajor to 4 semitones up or move Emajor to 4 semitones down. but the point is matching the chord progressions playing at the same time.
is what youre using a free program? or at least have a trial version? EDIT: never mind, i finally found it on the site. i went all the way to a "how to" section to get the demo :D
@setitstraight100 You should check your hard drive because the 4gb is probaly the ram in your computer the hard drive is where the space you'll be using when you install the vst's go too my computer and go to C:
I'm Latino and I'm interested in this video and I really like them to put subtitles in Spanish do not know if it is possible that you, your videos are very interesting and great contribution you put subtitles and so many more people see intereseran :D

Great to hear from you again nelson..
Legend
great tutorial. very helpful and covered quite a lot.
THANK YOU! For this tutorial, it helped me out soo much. I seriously never had an idea why my tracks neer sounded right
What visual theme is that? I love the FL Visual theme you have and would love to download it.
It's usually wise to write the melody line to mirror the bass. Ie. when the bass goes down the melody goes up and vice versa. For example this melody would probably sound better if it went upwards to C6 from the A5, because the bassline goes down to F3 from A3
Dude your tutorials are among the best on UA-cam.
hey!! great job..another fantastic and helpful tutorial!!
can you please tell me what skin you use
and where i can download it !?

This is an incredibly helpful tutorial especially for a beginner. Many thanks for posting.
damn this was really good after all this music theory i have been learning watching your videos helped it make a lot more sense.
Thank you so much! You are a fantastic teacher.

Thanks for clearing that up for me! Amazingly helpful to know some basic theory in music.
This (Like all your videos) is REALLY REALLY helpful. Thank you so much!! Merry Xmas!
It's funny, but I've taught myself many of the things in your tutorials. It's just nice to confirm the things I taught myself and know that I've been able to pick up on some music theory all by ear.
how do you learn to figure out which key "if wav" is supposed to go where according to key if they are not on c already?
Nelson, this video is broken at 2:57 as of Oct 6,2012.
What software are you using. Great tutorial.
Very good teacher! Thank you for keeping it simple and very informative!!
Epic progression is epic. Thanks for the great videos.

@flameballification He's using Fl Studios

How do you get that particular view of the piano roll?
Still helpful all these years later.
Ghost keys was a new tip for me... thank you so much
HOW DO YOU Extract INSTRUMENTALS FROM a song with out having it sound distorted?? Im making a mixtape and Im trying to find new songs I can put on my mixtape I would appreciate the help!!!!!
hey man, please o more videos on codes and keys. This is very critical information for young producers like me. God bless you
thanks again for all the great skills
What do you think of Propellerhead Reason/Record?
@LordSchepel this is for learning music theroy, not "heres how i write a song so you can copy me", like 90% of the other "tutorials" on youtube.
Hey I was trying to do this my self today but my chords are rushed "pressed" while yours are paced "played. They don't sound right at all. I sent you a PM. Please write back I could really use your help.
Thank you for your great tutorials!
what version of fl is this?
nfx does da best tutorials on fl studio
is A is the key of the song, meaning the bottom note of a chord ?>
I hear a lot about massive, it is recommended to get it ?
how you do, to make that fl studio looks like that??? i have fl9 and dont looks like that!
How do you match two different songs that are in a different key?
if both of them are in major or minor scales, you can transpose one of them to the other's key. for example, one is in Cmajor, the other one is in Emajor; you can move Cmajor to 4 semitones up or move Emajor to 4 semitones down.
but the point is matching the chord progressions playing at the same time.
I took notes while listening your tutorial. it was really helpful!!!!!
@dwellceller any reason ur not using 9?

EDIT: never mind, i finally found it on the site. i went all the way to a "how to" section to get the demo :D
...glad to know I learned most of this by experimentation/ear.

What Chord Progression is this???
Where can I get that FL ui?
So, can a chord be just two keys? The melodies I have made have a mixture of keys like chords, and certainly arpeggios.
No, a chord is at least 3 notes, if it is two notes it is called an interval.
Okay. I didn't know. I use them a lot with chords.
What VST's does he use?
Great tutorial, very helpful. Thank you
