I don't know why people are complaining about the length of these tutorials. For one he shows How to make a nice song. But he also takes the time to explain WHY it sounds nice. Also i like how you have to wait till the end to hear the finished song. It's like a nice little treat for paying attention in class. Awesome tutorials btw
Every time you prove your point and what you're were getting at, i smile. Simply cause you never fail to elaborate and demonstrate what you're teaching flawlessly. Thanks man i have learned so much :3
People say he talks to much, but he's giving you information that's for your own good. He doesn't have to explain to you in such detail, but it stops people who don't listen to the simpler explanation commenting saying 'I wasn't listening I don't understand how you got that and went from this to that'...etc. If you get a little restless then just skip the video on by a few seconds but show your appreciation, he's doing it for you! :)
Speaking as a music teacher, this is an outstanding lesson which covers those areas that should be considered when creating a basic bassline. Well done, and thank you for the tips to get started.
they are zipped channels basically, its something you can do to save space, and can be used to focus your eyes on the channels used in each pattern. you get them by going either to the channel menu so you can manually zip them) or go to the settings menu, and highlighting the option to auto-zip channels.
I love you. From watching one of your video's you referenced many other tutorials of yours and then in some of those references you had more referenced tutorials. I just learned so much ^.^ Thank you for your time and effort!
Very perceptive, you can measure time. Just because a lesson was made by this guy some time ago doesn’t make it less effective. I found it quite helpful.
for loud bass you can raise the volume over the 'ceiling level' (not recommended unless you dont mind it being distorted, or want it to be distorted) usually you want your peaks to be around -3 to -6 db so it doesnt blow out speakers/hurt ppls hearing... you boost the volume or adjust eq when -playing- it after its recorded if you want. point is you want a good master copy. or you can use the bass boost effect, or the overdive effect. i recommend these before going overmax with the volume.
@Y3KBeats It's stock in FL Studio. If you're in FL and can't find it, go to your mixer, select a track and on the right of the mixer, click one of the drop boxes and you will see a list of plug-ins. The EQ will be in there.
I just wanna thank you NFX, I learned many things from your tutorials. One of things I had problems with was the bass and you definitley helped a lot by this tutorial. Thanks
if you have the song in fl, and you want to export every mixer track separately, in order to remix them in another daw (adobe audition for example) just check "Split mixer tracks" on the rendering window on fl studio. You will have separate files for each track in your mixer.I hope that helps!
Straight up I would like to thank you for you taking your time to make a video with so much emphasis on the details that you state in your video(s) and not just running through things and moving on.
I have to say that the nicest chord progressions I've heard make use of a few different scales. For instance, New York State of Mind by Billy Joel played in C has an C major, Fmajor7, G7, Amin7, Dmin7 but also uses the D7, the A7 and something like a Bflat 11.
@platinumzs1k at the top of the interface there will be a button that look like a piano and then you can click it or you can click on the Channel that you are willing to use and click on it and choose from the selection to select the piano roll option
@oneguyincalifornia Yes, you can do this in FL, just render each layer individually and disable the channels you don't want to end up in the rendered file.
Even as a graduate, I watch videos like this to relearn the basics as well as learn the basics at a deeper level. This was an excellent video. An it's an example of excellent teaching. Some have pointed to the fact that the pace of the video is slow: music is complex, and if you don't take your time and humble yourself in its vastness, then you'll get your ass handed to you by someone that did.
Hey man this vid is so popular you may not see this but thanks for the tutorial the musical theory and amount of knowledge and understanding you bring to the table is great! Also you make things really easy to understand, awesome!
Bro thanks alot man, this is perfect man, dont cut anything down your vids are to a T, all the other videos do not systematically brake down the musical understanding like you, keep em coming man thanks again
@oneguyincalifornia Yes, you can, but you must separate every line (bass, snares, lead, synth, etc. in different patterns. Snares on pattern 1, bass on pattern 2 and so on.
I think you're talking about the velocity bars. There are 2 buttons on the top right of the step sequencer. One opens the velocity or note volume and the another lets you change the pitch of the note.
@TheOverchilled I think he means that u should use every frequency in your whole song, if he would finish that song he would add a instrument in the middle frequency register.
@djphilmore I agree with both of you. It is tedious listening to a 20 minute vid with too much talking but it still is free and he's giving his time to make this. Whenever i watch his vids i just skip around the video until i see something I really need to learn
There's a name for that, when a note is placed outside an expected beat. I forget what it's called, but it happens often in Reggae. There's also a name for when a note is placed before another in the chord progression, leading into it, which is often heard in classical and Baroque music.
You copy the root notes into the piano roll in the same pattern, where you are planning to have your bassline. Then you go to the bass instrument and click on the piano roll for that. Then you go to options "the little triangle facing down " then you click "helpers" and then "ghost channels" : )
wow.. your tutorials are really amazing. each one i was watching is just great. i hope you're going to continue with your work. you help us a lot! thanks
It's really important too, to have some notes or ghost notes as he said to integrate in swing with the rest of all track instruments, because it make the bass line a little bit more groovy and enlighten the bass sound itself on your track! Another trick for you guys
How do you know what note is your root note?? @07:36 Edit: I will check out your tutorials on chords for sure. Another question though, how do you get the chords in your piano roll to become lighter and darker, so you can see if your off note?
831tillidie- that works ok sometimes if there is a lot going on but it's not so much a bassline and couldn't ever lead with it. a variation of that slow long note bass can work very well but for the most part it your going the simple route its usually better just to make the bass ride the kicks. but in that way its the same as far as having to have a lot of other elements to the track.
click on one of the inserts in your mixer and it'll be in there. and for it to work with the sound you want, right-click the insert name with the sound on the step sequencer selected and hit "Link to this channel" there you go.
@LKTracks No, Its The List Of Effects All The Way To The Left Of FL Studio, Where All The Drum Kits And Stuff Is. I The Kits That I Drag There Are .rar Kits I Just Watched A Few Videos About It And For Some Reason I Dont Have Patches In The Cdrive Where I Can Extract Them To There, Then Open FL Studio And They Will Be There. lol Sounds Kinda Confusing, Uhh.
@JRLofficial in piano roll window click top left for the options go in helpers and there will be ghost channels make sure its ticked then you can see other notes in your step sequencer only from the same pattern though hope this helped
honestly thank you so much!!! ive been trying to figure that out 4 ages! i did see the glide time dial but couldnt figure out how to activate it so much thanks again!
Your tutorials are dope! One thing though I seen how you had the guitar set up then you went to the boo bass piano roll and you can still see the notes from the guitar in the background, do you have a tutorial on this so that when I am playing I can follow the note lasted on different instruments? Keep up the great beats!
nice tut! At first I was skeptical because you were using fruity loops (not that there's anything wrong with that) but it actually makes it easy to follow what you're talking about. I know a teeny bit of music theory but you broke it down logically. I will def check out your other vids.
How would eq boo bass also at what level volume wise is good level for bass line. I see tutorials on 808s but never one for actual bass guitar like basslines
Just the sequence ... if the tonality is D or Dm you are performing: V -> IV -> I thus A G D and of course the bass in this case is just playing the root note of each chord. It's the easiest way and it really makes understand what you tell about the Bass: without a bass any song has not deepness .. it's empty :)
Big up NFXBEATS! There are loads of tutorials on software on youtube - some good, some bad. These.... these are insane! Anyone talking shit about these tuts, especially the music theory ones, doesn't understand how valuable this info is. Thank you for your time, your knowledge, all of this. I can't stress that enough.
You must have an education in Sound Engineering... Your tutorials are great... You explain everything very well and you make Fruity Loops seem very easy to work with, which is great because new users can be easily intimidated by the program and you also lend respect and credibility to FL as a professional tool for producers and artists in a world where the common conception is that you can only get quality tracks from Reason, Sonar or Acid Pro. I use ALL of these programs, but FL is still my fav
people these days, always wanting instant results without the effort and time required to get those results. It's sad these same people are trying to be musicians. As always warbeats, great tutorial. Huge topic, but you narrowed it down pretty well.
Man I love your tutorials, did you go to school for this? Cuz damn it sure seems like it xD seriously though man I've already learned so much more about what I thought I already knew
hey i would like to know the anwser can somebody help me, id like to know whats the best to use for sounds like "dogg pound basses" dogg pound gangsta crips, another exemple: big sike "highdollarz" song, or often use by roger troutman and zapp, mr criminal's "bump bump bu-bu-bump". (funky) and of course there is also a method people use 3xosc for sound but id like to know if there is a better one thank you

@bon3thug5nharm0ny I think i understand, kk Well since you do not have any reference other then the sample,(meaning you have no sheet music, chords or anything else to tell you what the progression is) you have to go by ear, So basically you just listening to it, and try play along until you find the basic chord progression. which can sometimes be difficult. Thank you Warbeats for all you done. You was one of the first guys I watched when it came to learning how to make beats....THANK YOU!
This is still on point a whole 12 years later. great stuff

This video is 20:08 long, it was made in 2008...
Illuminati confirmed.
Very perceptive, you can measure time. Just because a lesson was made by this guy some time ago doesn’t make it less effective. I found it quite helpful.
Ian Duff I think he was saying it was odd because in 08 you couldn't upload a video longer than 10 mins.
for loud bass you can raise the volume over the 'ceiling level' (not recommended unless you dont mind it being distorted, or want it to be distorted)
usually you want your peaks to be around -3 to -6 db so it doesnt blow out speakers/hurt ppls hearing... you boost the volume or adjust eq when -playing- it after its recorded if you want. point is you want a good master copy.

no matter how creative your tryna make music , you will always come across something technical (engineering) i think music is both art and science :)
I just wanna thank you NFX, I learned many things from your tutorials. One of things I had problems with was the bass and you definitley helped a lot by this tutorial. Thanks
Thanks for taking the time to go as in depth as you do. Your videos are long as hell but I always walk away with something helpful.
I know this is kind of late, but you're retort was one of the most beautiful things I have ever heard.
I must admit that to this point your videos are the ones which helped me most on youtube!

This is pretty awesome. I like the references to theory, which is something most beat makers don't seem to get.
This guy is MIGHTY.
I haven't seen all your tutorials but this is my favorite so far. A few others have been very helpful, too, so thanks NFX!
I've been at it for 4yrs and I'm barley getting a hang of it. But warbeats helped me out like crazy. Thx warbeats! Your sinister products
I have a mathematical mind and somehow your style of explanation really appeals to that and makes this stuff easy to understand.
Great tutorial. I love the way you break things down slowly and take your time. Thanks!
Hey man this vid is so popular you may not see this but thanks for the tutorial the musical theory and amount of knowledge and understanding you bring to the table is great! Also you make things really easy to understand, awesome!

@platinumzs1k @platinumzs1k That's the piano roll, you can select it from one of the five main buttons in the top right.
great stuff! Would love to see more tutorials on music making!
There's a name for that, when a note is placed outside an expected beat. I forget what it's called, but it happens often in Reggae. There's also a name for when a note is placed before another in the chord progression, leading into it, which is often heard in classical and Baroque music.
what a great tutorial - so clear and well-structured and absolutely no waffle - thanks so much :) you're a brilliant teacher!
You copy the root notes into the piano roll in the same pattern, where you are planning to have your bassline. Then you go to the bass instrument and click on the piano roll for that.
Then you go to options "the little triangle facing down " then you click "helpers" and then "ghost channels" : )
In the piano roll options, theres an option that allows you to see those notes in the background.
wow.. your tutorials are really amazing. each one i was watching is just great. i hope you're going to continue with your work. you help us a lot! thanks
In a new channel, hit the keys "ALT" & "V", there's a function under the drop down menu in the channel as well.

Thank you NFX. Composing bass lines was a bit of a mystery to me until i watched your video. I'm going to watch more of your tutorials
Thankyou so much for these tutorials, I can't even express how useful they are.
@shaunoftheundead and a swing to it and a longer attack. They might also play offnotes too (madlib, flying locust etc does this.)
Don't say "there's no magic to it". Making good music IS magic. :)
How do you know what note is your root note?? @07:36
Edit: I will check out your tutorials on chords for sure.
Another question though, how do you get the chords in your piano roll to become lighter and darker, so you can see if your off note?
thank you for clarifying the bassline's importance. it's nice to know technically what it does for the song
831tillidie-

@shaunoftheundead if you use fl studio 9 use the riff machine on 3/4
click on one of the inserts in your mixer and it'll be in there. and for it to work with the sound you want, right-click the insert name with the sound on the step sequencer selected and hit "Link to this channel" there you go.

is it okay to use the soundgoodizer plugin on your boobass when you use boobass as a bassline?? please answer thanks.
awesome tutorial!!!
1 thing...how did you open piano so you can see the guitar at the same time as bass?
people these days, always wanting instant results without the effort and time required to get those results. It's sad these same people are trying to be musicians.
As always warbeats, great tutorial. Huge topic, but you narrowed it down pretty well.
thanks for the tutorial dude, I dont know why I have never really thought about the bass like this before.
Man I love your tutorials, did you go to school for this? Cuz damn it sure seems like it xD seriously though man I've already learned so much more about what I thought I already knew
@MrQbeats Piano Roll Menu> Helpers> Ghost Channels (Alt + V) on FL 9.
hey i would like to know the anwser can somebody help me, id like to know whats the best to use for sounds like "dogg pound basses"

This is a great video. Do you have a tutorial explaining the same using the Parametric EQ2? Am talking about FL studio 10. Thanks!
@xGEE76x You should be able to see the dark gray notes for other instruments in the same pattern, but in other channels.
tyvm for the tut, long time fan of the Warbeats. I'm no pro, but Warbeats has helped me progress alot.
@YoGangsta001: i don't use fruity, but it looks to me like they might be muted. Or hold ctrl when you click on the pattern
Thank you. I learned a lot from that tutorial. I will be sure to check out some of your other videos in the future.
GREAT VIDEO, dude!! Very detailed yet simple explanations! Thanks a lot for your uploads! They really help!
i'm just wondering how you got the piano roll pattern greyed out so you could put the bass lines on it?
do you have kontakt 4 for fl studio, i have other plugins that im having trouble installing can you help??
This is great I have seen several of your you tube Fl studio videos. And you really clear things up for me. Thank you
Man , thank you so much for your tutorials and the overall input to the community. Really :)
thanx man, at 4:45 he was still talking about what bass is. i would have given up long before getting to that point on my own.
Great job i play bass guitar and ive been studing theory for a while now and youve covered the about of year for newbies to theory
Can somebody tell me how to have the grayed out notes that are mute at 7:50?
Those are Ghost Notes: Alt + V (While in Piano Roll)
thanks. I will try that later
RonZ Ombie You really should, when I tried it was very easy to make drum rolls etc. ;)
RonZ Ombie You can also press that Settings icon on piano roll and check Ghost Notes from there.
@YoGangsta001: i don't use fruity, but it looks to me like they might be muted.
@AgentC00l
grey one are from another instrument.. you cant affect them in the piano roll that u are.
only in their piano roll
its the same concept. athough based from my experience, basslines for trance and house usually counters the kick. Alternating between the kicks..... kick bass kick bass kick bass etc...
nfx is the man!! btw nfx, did you go to school for music or no ?
This was a great video, especially for people who aren't too familiar with music theory and the role of the bass. Though, on several occasions I caught incorrect use of termology, which bugged me because people who don't know the correct usage will learn wrong.
For instance the beginning of Fur Elise I believe is A, E, A... Lemme know if this was of any help at all, sorry if it wasnt :P
thank you! great not much out there explaining bass line, thx again
one more thing, how do i get seethrough piano rolls of other patterns?
i've been trying for a while still dont get how
in some of basshunter's songs the basslines are offbeat but yet they are semi-delayed too.. I don't understand how some techno songs get their bass lines to sound like they're lagging, but I'd like to learn how.
@bon3thug5nharm0ny I dont really understand your question, You want to use a sampled loop (one thats premade) and find out what key its in?
how do you put bass notes on top of the piano notes in the bass line piano roll ?
That was a very easy-to-understand tutorial. Good work.
Programming synths? Shizzle! That's some pro stuff! Is there any tutorials on it? It would be so good to make beats on my own synths
@Draytonvalley I don't know - I usually just write my chord progression out on paper lol.
this helped me in creating my oun music...i still am workin with sampled music.....the thing im lookin for is the base that shakes u know what i mean?
I don't script the vids I just go. Feel free to find other tutorials that fit your needs better.
@jman0532887 its one of the effects you can put on a track. Parametric EQ.
