We did 6th grade BJU Science last year and loved it! We are doing online. I completely agree with everything you said in this video. We are super excited to start Life Science in August! We did but the kit for experiments, worth every penny!
I was able to purchase the text and lab book on Amazon used for about 30$. Previously, these kind of textbooks were just too expensive for me, just absolutely unattainable in price at 70$. We are secular, eclectic, hands on style homeschoolers and started homeschooling in 2018. Out of the gate I know we will not complete everything or pressure ourselves to do so. I feel like I'm a part of new group homeschoolers that are on a tighter budget and although we are in Gods family, our school is more secular focused. I looked over the Earth Science text book and im thrilled to have access to a beautiful text and lab book with alot of great information. I'm sure we will be able to make it work for us.
I'm completely new to this. Just decided to do some kind of alternate schooling...two weeks from the beginning of the school year. So I'm rushing through everything to figure everything out. I was looking at Liberty Academy and Monarch. But from what I can tell, those just look like a bunch of online reading. But the video clips and materials that I've seen from BJU look much more engaging for the student to learn and follow along. Leaning toward BJU now...mostly thanks to your videos.
We had a student in each of the two you discussed and one in Physical Science. We also just got our biology class. I made sure to get the logos lab kit for biology since we will be dissecting! Then in following years we just order refill kits.
Have you done a video on what the online grading looks like exactly for BJU? Or know of another video illustrating this? I believe they begin this feature for 5th grade and up?
If you had to do Life Science again, would you buy the Logos Kit. The rep, I purchased Life Science from recommended only the dissection kit and I cannot remember why.
Yes! I'd get the kit. Here is a video from BJU Press about what is included in the Life Science kit. It might help you to decide if it would be worth it for your student or not. bit.ly/2x1t7K6
Can you address how vaccines are addressed in blju press? Perhaps A flip through on that section? I'm curious as to the wording they use and if it's addressed in a balanced approach vs over-glorified nonsense ? (what I mean by that is : Does it address risks, informed consent, ethics, morals, etc) As the mom of a kid who suffered a.d.e.m from dtap and almost died this topic and how it is addressed is of particular importance to me.
Hi Janelle. For the Earth Science, What is the flow of each week? Does the student watch the video lesson for each chapter one day then read the chapter a bit each day of the week? Does student have to read the textbook before watching the videos?
Most of the supplies were included and if it wasn't included we skipped the lab/activity. We did most of the labs and the Logos kit was a sanity saver for me! I would have never gotten around to buying all those supplies on my own.
Did you find you did every experiment? Will the teacher do everyone on the video in case you decided not let your student do them, they at least could know what happened
How do you budget $300 for a science kit with the books as well? is the online videos more? i was looking forward to this course but now the price point is really making it unreachable
My husband and I budget for our homeschool curriculum and supplies. We put a certain amount of money aside each paycheck so that when it comes time to purchase curriculum, we already have a large savings for homeschool curriculum. It also helps me to know what the budget is and then I adjust our curriculum choices to fit into our budget. So for example, when we use a BJU science curriculum plus the lab kits (which are pricey), I know that I need to find less expensive curriculum for other subjects. Hope that makes sense.
Thanks for your video, Janelle. Can you tell me how long each day your daughter spent on average doing BJU Life Science (including watching the video)? Also, is it a 4 or 5 day a week course?
It is a 5 day course. I believe she spent an hour or so doing Life Science. Some days might have been a bit longer if the video was longer or she had an experiment to do.
I need a Life Science curriculum for my 8th grader. Even though it's the 7th grade edition, would it be challenging/appropriate enough for my 8th grader?
We did almost all of the experiments and I don't remember buying a single item. If I remember correctly, everything is in there except standard household items.
Thanks for this insight and mentioning the lab kits.

Thankful for your videos! Just went to my rep yesterday! We are a go for BJU!!

Wow! You got a great deal!
@@JanelleKnutson 🙂thanks, yes, i'm excited about using it next year.

Love that they have a refill kit option! Just noticed that yesterday when I was searching for something else on the BJU Press website.

Here is a playlist from the BJU Press UA-cam channel on how to use their online DL.

This review is just what I needed!
Yay! Glad it was helpful.

Do they do the experiments online in case we don’t want to physically do them?
Hi Janelle. For the Earth Science, What is the flow of each week? Does the student watch the video lesson for each chapter one day then read the chapter a bit each day of the week? Does student have to read the textbook before watching the videos?
Great questions. There is a video lesson each day and then they do an assignment and read ahead for the next day's lesson.
How many extra supplies did you need that was not included in the logos kit?

I love your homeschool videos, they're so helpful. Do you also do makeup videos? lol I really like your makeup and curious what kind you use!
You're too kind. I do not do makeup videos because I feel like I don't know what I'm doing! lol I just put it on and hope it looks okay.
Very helpful! Thank you so much!!

If I do online course do we get an actual physical text book? It said ebooks?
You should receive a physical textbook as well as access to the digital ebook.
What if you already have a book? Can you still get access to videos? Does it really save you anything?
When you purchase the video courses, the books are included in the cost.

Yes! This would work very well for an 8th grader.
Thank you this was very helpful
We are finishing up 6th grade. Is there a student text book for science 7?
Yes, there is a student textbook and a lab manual.
Generally how long are the BJU Life Science videos?
Good question, wondering as well.
Videos average 13 minutes. You can find out more about the Life Science course here: bit.ly/2SNkIby
Thank you
