I was only 14 when this song first came out. Forty-seven years later, I still love this song!
ditto
And I was 10 years old and listen to it because an elder brother bought it. I still love the song too 😍
Intensely superb recording/performance. Procal Harem did not get the recognition they deserved. Gary Booker is a master craftsman with lyrics, phrasing and arranging. Conquistador is nothing less than a masterpiece.
RIP
Originally this was done by Procol Harum in 1967, first album. Much shorter studio 🎙 version. Then this wonderful version with the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra is from 1972!
one of my older cousins was at the Jubilee Auditorium on the University of Alberta campus in Edmonton in 1971 for this concert ! so jealous as i was still quite young at the time and didn't know about rock music yet !
@@SirManfly The concert was in 1971. The album was released in 1972
@@45rpmSINGLES right, typo and I corrected it 🤷🏻♂️
J'ai écouté cette chanson sur RMC,Luxembourg et Europe 1,Sud Radio en 1972 au hit parade
Since this was recorded with a Canadian orchestra, "Conquistador" qualified as "Canadian content" here. No small thing as this came out shortly after 30% Canadian content rules came into effect. Always a staple on oldies and classic rock stations in Canada.
it was a huge song in Canada it's day and indeed it's still on the FM rock stations playlist to this day !
This was recorded in Edmonton,Alberta with the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra in 1972.
THEY did a great job making this sound terrific too !!
I still have this 45! One of the best songs ever written. Thanks!
Conquistador your stallion stands in need of company
And like some angel's haloed brow
You reek of purity
I see your armour-plated breast has long since lost its sheen
And in your death mask face
There are no signs which can be seen
And though I hoped for something to find
I could see no maze to unwind
Conquistador a vulture sits upon your silver shield
And in your rusty scabbard now
The sand has taken seed
And though your jewel-encrusted blade has not been plundered still
The sea has washed across your face
And taken of its fill
And though I hoped for something to find
I could see no maze to unwind
And though I hoped for something to find
I could see no maze to unwind
(Instrumental interlude)
Conquistador there is no time
I must pay my respect
And though I came to jeer at you
I leave now with regret
And as the gloom begins to fall
I see there is no aureole
And though you came with sword held high
You did not conquer, only die
And though I hoped for something to find
I could see no maze to unwind
And though I hoped for something to find
I could see no maze to unwind
And though I hoped for something to find
I could see no maze to unwind
(Applause)
Most underrated group of all time...a cut above the rest!!
This proves there more to the band than a whiter shade of pale.they did do other stuff.
Of course they did! I remember this just as well as Whiter Shade of Pale :)
Never gets old.
Wow, I forgot about this song.
I have not heard it for years.
It's truly great.
I remembered KSHE played
back in the day.
Freeking awesome song and turntable bro
This is the copy I remember from high school, many of the rich children had it playing on there new automobiles
Top twenty hit from 45 years ago-Still sounds great!
This song is more than rock & roll, it's an amazing high energy dramatic story, band, song. It's a movie. IMO.
Love the keyboard's inclusive
Procol Harum Rocks! 🎸
great song
Genius!
fabulous song, robin trower played gtr.
Not on this 1971 recording . He’d already left the band
The drums remind me of giant wings.
An example of how great STEREO is.
rock on🐎
Incredibel good sound.Which Riaa is used?Digital sound should be ashamed of itself. All songs by PH the text(Keith Reid)was written first.Except one number, where the song(Gary Brooker)was written first.Correct,Conquistador.So,so organic sound.
can you do winter shade of pale?
Doesn’t sound remastered like today’s CD’s of this song
i mean the 45 rpm?
Giant wings, batting to get out of there.
Or maybe the word is thrashing?
do Melhor
After that big intro, the damn yankee can't pronounce "Conquistador" Oh well, the song's booey, no?
