  • Original ABC Dunhill Records #4352 radio station promotional copy
    Debut 5/19/1973
Peaked at #3 on the Billboard Hot 100 Chart.
As featured in the TV Series "Lost".
Interesting history behind this record - There does NOT exist a true stereo version of this tune. Only true mono and fake stereo versions exist, and unfortunately there are WAY too many of the fake stereo versions floating around!
This is the original radio station promotional copy, and ironically, the side that says "stereo", is completely wrong. It is a true mono version only. The side I play on this video is of the mono side, and this too is in true mono, but with one major exception. Knowing that the monster Top 40 AM radio stations of the day would only play the mono side, ABC Dunhill pumped up the compression, which made the record louder, which made the song jump out of the radio speakers. That attracted the listener's attention, which resulted in a more popular record, and hence greater sales!
There are many stories out there about why this tune was never mixed in true stereo.
The most popular is because ABC Dunhill rushed Three Dog Night to record the record, then rushed to get promo copies out to radio stations in order to get a jump on the B.W. Stevenson version of the same song.
Here is a very detailed description courtesy of the web site "top40musiconcd.com":
In comparing the "stereo" and mono sides of my DJ 45, they're both straight mono, and run an identical 3:26. The difference is that the mono side is more compressed, and is cut about 28% louder than the "stereo" side.
The story, at least according to the liner notes from the Celebrate CD:
Cory Wells: "That one had all kinds of repercussions. An unethical song pitcher pitches me the tune, and I tell him to freeze it. He takes it to B.W. Stevenson. You see, people wanted to know what we were gonna do so they could beat us out."
Chuck Negron: "Cory and I had a big fight, because I didn't want to put it out as a single. I said, 'You are letting RCA, who had Stevenson, decide our next single' instead of releasing the album and letting radio and the public decide."
Richie Podolor (producer): "We had two days to do it. Michael (Allsup) did one overdub, but I ended up playing seven guitar parts because not everybody was available. It was such a rush-rush thing. We used helicopters to fly out acetates to DJs to get that going. We didn't have it pressed, and we were reviewed and we had a hit with it, just hand-carrying it to stations."
There's more drama there than on your average daytime soap! :) It must've been fun north of the border, where Dunhill was distributed by RCA.
This is the original mono mix as heard when this was a huge hit on AM Top 40 radio on stations like WABC New York.

At the time this 45 was released, ABC/Dunhill's lacquer mastering was handled by Doug Sax's Mastering Lab in Hollywood (cut on a "tube" lathe, specifically a Scully model 601). A few months after this record, ABC/Dunhill set up their own mastering studios.

You are most likely correct about the multitrack masters for Shambala. In the rush to release this record, no stereo mix was made. Since this record was recorded at about the same time that ABC Dunhill purged their master tape archives, the multitrack masters probably wound up in the dumpster before anyone realized that they didn't make the stereo master yet. Boy do I wish I had a crack at that dumpster back then! Can you imagine the money they could have made by selling the multitrack masters?!

On this day in 1973 {June 20th} 'American Bandstand' celebrated its 20th anniversary with a 90-minute special on the ABC-TV network...
Guests on the show were Neil Diamond, Little Richard, Paul Revere and the Raiders, Three Dog Night, Paul Anka, Frankie Avalon, Bobby Darin, Fabian, Annette Funicello, Johnny Mathis, and Paul Simon...
Of the eleven guests only Paul Simon and Three Dog Night had a record on Billboard's Hot Top 100 chart at the time...
Paul Simon's "Kodachrome" was at #7; ten days later on July 1st, 1973 it would peak at #2* {for 2 weeks} and it stayed on the chart for 14 weeks…
And Three Dog Night was at #11 with "Shambala"; and one month and two days later on July 22nd, 1973 it would peak at #3 {for 1 week} and it stayed on the chart for 16 weeks {it was also their 16th charted record on the Top 100}...
    * The two weeks that "Kodachrome" was at #2, the #1 record for both those weeks was "Will It Go Round In Circles" by Billy Preston...

From what I read online the band was forced to record "Shambala" by ABC to beat a competing cover by BJ Stevenson of "My Maria" fame. Producer Richie Podolor mixed it to mono first so it could be rushed-released to AM radio and pressing plants. But when it was time to record the "Cyan" album a few weeks later, the original 16 multi-track tape had been erased for re-recording on (2 inch tape isn't cheap) by the recording studio.
I just wish Podolor had the foresight to do a stereo mix that would have been easy to "fold down" to stereo, but mono AM radio still ruled in 1973, and 3 Dog Night was seen as a AM radio band like the Grass Roots. And Polodor prefered to do dedicated mono mixes for AM Radio and 45's.

    • @TheBrooklynbodine
      @TheBrooklynbodine 5 років тому +2

Yes, that was when AM still ruled the airwaves, but not for much longer at that point. If AM had adopted stereo, who knows, maybe WLS, WABC, KHJ and many, many more to numerous to mention would still be "musicradio". I guess only the ABC-owned stations used the "Musicradio" branding. One other thing, when WNBC had "The Time Machine", they called themselves "Musicradio" at least once, and probably way more than that. In my second sentence I meant to say "too" as opposed to "to". My regrets for the error.

I always wondered why music sounded "hotter" over the radio than on my records at home, no matter what I did with the bass, treble or balance controls on my stereo console. I wondered if there was some trick they did with the radio station sound board, the copy of the record they had or my record was somehow defective. The "strange sound" some refer to here is not rally strange, it is bold, clean and pleasant! One arguemt for CDs that I stand by is they are more durable. They don't lose fidelity over time and if ytou have a large music collection it's much easier to move a box of CDs than stacks of record albums. It took getting used to, but the shrunken down cover art is as enjoyable as always.

There must have been several mono mixes existing for this song, because the mono mix I remember hearing on WRKO in Boston had a few other differences that the radio promo version you posted has. Notably on the guitar riff in the middle and, at the end of the song, there's an additional "Shambala" vocal flourish. I'd love to hear that again!

There seems to be a fair amount of distortion on the stereo side and I have found many ABC/Dunhill 45's to have inferior sound on their stereo mix sides. Technics Direct Drive: the only way to go

The very last turntable I ever owned was a Technics SL 1100 direct drive. Bought in the army while in Germany in 1972 0r 3. Had I shipped home and kept it for many years until I finally gave up and moved to cds only. Music recordings seem to lack something since cds.

Did anyone at WABC ever do a break-in record? I'm writing a book on break-ins and it'd be great to add any they might've done to the book. I'm guessing I, now, have the largest collection of break-ins in the world. It used to be Frank Merrill in Ill., but, he started selling his collection a year or so ago! I have yet to count how many I've got but it's gotta be around 600.

+Red Vynil - Forgive my ignorance but since I was born 3-years after you started collecting these types of vinyl, what is a break-in?

    • @RedVynil
      @RedVynil 7 років тому +2

Rochelle: It is a form of novelty/comedy record, (although, not all of them are comedy), where a fake interview is conducted and the responses to the questions are supplied by bits of other people's hit records. While on UA-cam, look up Dickie Goodman and you should find LOTS of examples! WButane has posted a lot of them here. Don't pay any attention to that vile Opie & Anthony crap that keeps showing up there, it has nothing to do with break-ins! 1966 was a great year!! LOTS of great music that year and it was the start of the psychedelic era! Best and most creative music ever made!!

I don't think there was a true stereo mix of this song. I think this is one of the few mono-only mixes of this era. King Harvest "Dancing in the Moonlight" is another which does not have a true stereo mix. Then there are the songs which have significant differences between the mono mix and the stereo mix, like "Brother Love's Traveling Salvation Show" which has tubular bells on the mono mix which are missing from the stereo mix.

Actually, there is a true stereo mix of Dancing in the Moonlight: ua-cam.com/video/0eHBLHVHjWg/v-deo.html

The stereo mix of "DITM" didn't come out until fairly recently. It's true mono on the original album as well.

ABC trashed their masters to make room for the Famous Music labels (Dot/Paramount/Blue Thumb, etc), but when they were bought in turn by MCA in '79, much of the ABC product was tossed also. Shameful.

yes, and mono is the only way it will be heard since ABC Dunghill threw away their multi-track masters many years ago. I've heard a DES is very difficult since they used a lot of phasing to give that strange sound

WABCRADIO77 I've been collecting records since 1972. I have a total of approximately 800 45 rpm records from the '50's, '60's, '70's and '80's. I also have about approximately 500 pop original issue LP's. I also been shopping from garage sales, friends & family and from a FM radio station WDAI in Chicago.

WABC? Does that mean you don't get to hear the beginning or the fade at the end? They were notorious for doing both.
