    Hello ASL Heroes!!!
    Hey, I could really use your help.
    If you’ve enjoyed having access to an expert in ASL you can help me continue my work for you.
    A small monthly donation from you would instantly make a big difference here at the studio because teachers don’t earn much and I could use some help paying for server and domain hosting for Lifeprint.com.
    Right now you can help out a humble (not to mention kind, caring, generous, compassionate, helpful, friendly, fair, and hard-working) ASL teacher -- just go here and a few clicks later you too will be a true “ASL Hero!”

They allow you to have much more practice learning from the ASL videos, offer quizzes and a graduated learning program. The self-paced lessons also cost a LOT less ($60/year) than most--if not all--ASL classes of this caliber. I've kept my subscription going for years to help support Dr. Bill AND to refresh my knowledge after taking time off from learning and using ASL...

    Thank you Dr. Vicars. I'm a sucker for corny jokes. I wish I could help u financially. Unfortunately, we r not able. I will when I can though. Thank you for teaching us. My grandparents were deaf and mute. I love learning ASL. My dad and his sister were hearing and had to learn it. So I grew up watching sign, but was never taught except for the alphabet. I wish they were here so I could converse with them. I hope I get the opportunity to use some of what I learned from you. You're very kind and you make learning fun!

    • @alisonsattler6396
      @alisonsattler6396 Рік тому

      I did the same. My sister signed with her friends and taught us minimal non-alphabet signs when we were growing up. She was so successful as a lip reader that we never needed to learn ASL to communicate with her. Now that I am hearing impaired in both ears (I used to be deaf in one ear and hearing in the other), I find sign very helpful toward understanding what I miss even with my hearing aides. I wish kny parents, sisters and I were more aware of the benefits of sign for helping my sister understand us as we were growning up. This is another service Dr. Bill offers...Educating people on how ASL helps create a more inclusive environment for people who are deaf and hearing impaired. It can also be used to help nonnative English speakers (or anyone learning a different language) to learn words faster when the the sign easily represents the spoken word.

      0 mg (zero milligrams)
      vs
      OMG
      The pun depends on the signed letter "O" and the signed number "zero" both using the same handshape.
      Zero milligrams is "like" (not equal to, but somewhat similar to) 1,000th of a gram -- the experience of being like that might cause someone to think or exclaim "OMG!"

    Does it matter which hand you use mainly for signing? Like would anyone give me weird looks for using my left hand for spelling out words, or would it make it harder for people to read?

    • @sign-language
      @sign-language  Рік тому +1

      I encourage students to pick a dominant hand (regardless of left or right) and stock with it for both fingerspelling and as the main hand used in signs.
      Skilled signers will certainly be able to understand you if you sign dominant right but spell with your left -- yet you will come across as having a slight accent.
      Left-handed people generally sign as a mirror image of that done by right-handed people with no change in the meaning of the signs. There are some situations involving specifying locations that will require slight adjustments. For example, if a person wants to indicate that they have pain in a location on one side the body then the sign is done at that location regardless of handedness.

      Two things:
      - I was reminded of the Fake South African signer ( I assume you know) and looked up a video of Trevor Noah talking about that then, about him not making deaf jokes and getting called out by a deaf guy for NOT telling deaf jokes!. The You Tube is called: "Jokes About Deaf People" - Trevor Noah - (Nation Wild Comedy)
      .
      - Then, since I do some comedy, Something popped into my mind for a possible deaf joke premise:
      "When deaf kids don't want to listen, do they put fingers in their eyes and 'loudly' F-spell: LA LA LA LA?"
      .
