  • BanDin Detroit, episode #5 features the bands Snake Out and The Gories.
Snake Out has been called a Surfabilly band, combining fast Rockabilly with Punk, Country Twang, social comments and lowbrow humor. They were active in the early to late 1980's, and have had occasional performances since then, always fronted by singer/songwriter Len Puch. For BanDin, Snake Out was recorded in binaural stereo, as were most of the bands in the series. Listen through earbuds or headphones for live 3-D sound.
The Snake Out videos feature Len Puch on lead vocals, Warren Defever on bass, and Tim Reagan & Willie Scott, in that order, on drums. Warren Defever is a.k.a. Warn Defever, and the lead singer and multi-instrumentalist of his band, His Name Is Alive, which is still an active and respected progressive/blues/rock/experimental group. He also fronted the band FishCats, shown in episode #7 of BanDin. Tim, Len and Warren are also seen in the credits, as the BanDin theme song, 'Feedback" by Len Puch, is heard. They also play a live version of "Feedback" at the start of their set in this episode.
The Gories are an American garage rock trio that formed in 1986 Detroit. Their unique playing styles use self-taught techniques, designed to get the most energy and impact from a song. As Jack White, of his Thirdman Records and formerly the group White Stripes, has said, "The best garage band in America since the '60s. Very primitive…they made people with Les Pauls and Marshall amps look like idiots. Rooted in the primal, primitive underpinnings of 50's rhythm and blues and unhinged 60s garage punk, the sound they came to was wholly their own. The Gories should be viewed in the same influential context as the Velvet Underground and the Cramps. While they may have barely sold any records, the folks that saw and heard these bands were inspired to create. It's high time the Gories get their due."
This bass-less band features Mick Collins and Danny Kroha on guitars and lead vocals, and Peggy O'Neill on drums. They originally broke up in 1992 after a European tour. The band reformed in July 2009 for a reunion tour across Europe, and went on a tour of North America in 2010. In Spring and Summer 2015 they have been back in Europe, and may tour soon in North America. Text adapted From Wikipedia and Thirdman Records websites.
Dan Rose Produced/Directed/Edited/Photographed (with George Lees) the original versions of the Gories videos, from which which you will see 2 songs here. BanDin #4 had most of the other songs. Someone posted an original draft edit of the BanDin Detroit episode #4 on UA-cam, so you can search to see it.
As Dan Rose said, "The original edit of the entire session is what we showed to Alex Chilton in 1989 while at my friend George Hadjidakis' house in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. Alex would not leave me alone, until he had The Gories secured to make what would be their second full-length lp, "I Know You Fine, But How You Doin'...". Alex became an instant fan.
This episode was shown in April, 1988, on Cable-TV systems across Wayne and Oakland Counties in the Detroit area.
