- Haruo Nakajima is perhaps Japan’s most famous actor, but you wouldn’t necessarily recognize his face. That’s because from 1954 to 1972, he was the man inside the Godzilla costume for 12 consecutive films. At 87 years old, many now consider Nakajima among the most iconic suit actors in film history. We caught up with the legend who gave life to the "King of the Monsters" to find out how he took on the challenge in the original groundbreaking movie.

literally nobody that's a fan of "the man in the suit" is under the assumption that the real life actor was some sort of monster. believe it or not, they're fully capable of knowing the difference between fiction and reality. unfortunately, many of them just think it's funny to go on literally any video about the older godzilla movies and talk about it. it's annoying, yeah, but it's not like they really think that.

2020: CGI and CGI and CGI
motion capture, the modern day people dressed as monsters, minus the suit.
CGI looks much better, and its less of a hassle to set up.
@Branden Wright yeah, but suitmation is very hard too and sometimes dangerous. they have to strap on explosives on their suit with a temperature of over 50 degree celsius and if there is a wrong move the injury might be fatal to death. in cgi they have to pass hours and hours of hard work and concentration to make the monsters look real.

Nakajima was an awesome man! :) He was really a pioneer in suitmation, which is often maligned as being cheap and a cop-out but actually has a ton of effort go into it.

I got to meet Haruo Nakajima at a Godzilla con in NYC in the mid to late '90's. He was signing autographs and I was grateful to get one of his photos signed (the black and white photo of him in the water holding the top half of the Godzilla suit). He was very gracious to his fans.

Titanosaurus Fan75 its so sad that he is gone but he inspired me to do the same thing I want to become the next Godzilla suit actor and I know it sounds crazy but I know the precaution for wearing the suit and no one will be as good as Haruo Nakajima. And I want to continue the classic tradition of man in rubber suit I've saw shin gojira and I love it but I was sad that they didn't use the guy in a suit and I can see why but I don't want them to make the Japanese Godzilla like the 2014 one I want it to be the classic man in a suit and that is why I will carry that dream to existence.

This man brought a fantastic story with an iconic character that is still going strong nearly 67 years later and most likely longer than that, and has inspired, charmed, and engaged millions all over the world.
