There's no dharmic religion, it's a Hindu nationalist invented term. Buddhism is anti-thesis to Hinduism, even Hinduism itself is not one centralized religion, but a term to describe various religions of the subcont, each with different beliefs and customs.
@@benishan3 But the common thread passing thru all these different forms of beliefs is the Dharmic value system consisting of compassion, empathy and ahimsa. That is the beauty of the Indian culture. It synchronizes well with free liberal democratic values. It gives freedom of thought and action and teaches one to be tolerant and frees one from regementations. That is why Hinduism has survived inspite of the daunting challenges of the past and present. Even though it being least organized and inspite of its apparent incoherances.
All the answer I can relate very well.. My granny grown up in Tibet and till the date she doesn’t consume single creature from sea 🌊 or water.. she used to tell me all the same reason.. growing up with her I turn my self as vegetarian from 12 year old 🌱 and I’m proud to say that I’m still vegetarian and would be until I die.. it’s not only just because of being Buddhist, more like living a simple, harmony life and it’s kinda tribute to all the living creature on this earth.. thank you for your amazing work jamyang la..🙏🏻🍀

Such a lovely video! Thoroughly enjoyed the whole content! As a Sherpa born and raised in Kathmandu Nepal, I can vividly remember my mother strictly prohibiting my siblings and myself from holding an aquarium in tje house. Like Tibetan Buddhist, she believed if we kept fish as pets and if they die in our care, that'll be a big sin. She also never cooked fish in the house! No matter how much I urged or threatened (at least tried to) her to cook fish because my adolescent taste buds wanted to have a taste. She always tells me it's a very big sin to kill and eat fish. I would be lying if I say that I haven't eaten fish! But I now understand the rationale behind my mom's reasonings. Not only it stems from the cultural and spiritual values of Buddhism, but it equally serves an economic and sustainable value in the society. Having said that, I have no hate or dislike towards people who eat fish. Grew up with Newars in Kathmandu who cook fish in almost every celebrations and festivities!! Great work once again! Releasing ( fishes) or other bigger animals is a common practice in Mahayana Buddhism. If you are a Buddhist practitioner naturally you will adopt a vegetarian diet to abstain from taking animals lives. The criteria of compassion & abstain from killings other beings are one of the tenets of Buddhism. The 5 precepts: 1.) Abstain from killings, 2. )Abstain from sexual misconduct, 3.) Abstain from lying ( dishonest), 4.) No stealing, 5.) Abstain from taking intoxicants. Our world is in topsy turvy mainly due to killings karma of wanton killings of people & animals.
Oh! Don't say that. They kill thier sheeps, Male Yaks to eat. Buddhism advocates about not killing any animal but the Buddhism which Tibetan follow do eat meat.

I respect everyone's opinion , their believe, culture and way of life but so i never raise my voice against anyone base on someone's believe but sometimes i thought we human being could be better off without cast or religion, which is the driving force to keep us apart. Humanity is all we needed but religion often lead to violence and confusion. Its just my opinion but not intend to hurt someones feeling.
I am Half Nepali ( Kirati ) and Half Bengali, And I don't eat mutton, but we are allowed to eat "Chhyangra", a mountain goat because I'm half Kirati Nepali, but eat fish because my mother is Bengali. However, my mother's side of the family question why I don't eat mutton but eat something related to mutton ( the mountain goat ). And that is a long story.........
Extraordinary Video!! My Dad was posted in Gangtok where i was introduced to this great culture. Infact there is still a Hotel called Tashi Delek at Gangtok. Rumtek Monastery was my favorite place of hangout after school. I hope I can visit Tibet next year after this Pandemic.
Dear Jamyang, Thank you for your video, I really appreciate your work and specially thank you for interviewing our friends Tibetans and accompanying the person who released those fish! As you may have noticed, in most of the entrances of the monasteries you will find a depiction of the wheel of life (in Tibetan, sipa korlo). In the center of the wheel, you can see three animals: pig, rooster and snake. Right on the outside of the three animals you see some people going up as a result of positive actions and some others going down as the result of engaging in negative actions. In the outer rings of the wheel we can find the depiction of the six worlds (hells, hungry ghosts, animals, humans, demi gods and gods) and in the very outer ring there are the 12 interdependent links. According to the teachings of our Lord Buddha, the pig represents ignorance and confusion, rooster is related to selfish desire and snake or fish are symbols of anger. Anger, desire and ignorance are the so called three poisons which are the source of our suffering. This wheel is also a reminder of the essence of the Buddha’s teaching: “practice virtue throughly, do not engage in non-virtue, train your mind completely, this is the teaching of the Buddha’. Based on this, it is said that eating chicken or eggs increases our selfish desire, eating pork increases our ignorance and confusion and eating fish or snake - which are water animals -increases our selfish aggression or anger. Dear Jamyang, I kindly request you to consider this and decrease your consumption of meat, specially on sacred days, like full and new moon and the 8th day of the lunar calendar. I know you love eating meat, I’ve seen many times how you enjoy 😀. I am happy you have a good time but as you are a wonderful person and we care for you and your health and as I also know you love all sentient beings I would like to request you to reduce the cause of pain of our mothers. The full moon is Buddha Amitabha Day, New Moon is Shakyamuni Day and 8th or half moon is Medicine Buddha Day. Buddha Amitabha protects us from famine and shortage, Buddha Shakyamuni protects us from fights and war and Medicine Buddha protects us from illness and epidemics. We as human beings are often tormented by shortage (which is caused by selfish desire) outer and inner conflicts (which are triggered by anger) and illness and diseases (which are caused by confusion and ignorance). As you already know, we have the power to train our mind and be of benefit for our precious mother beings - thinking of this please consider decreasing your meat consumption, for your own health and happiness! As a Keralite I can understand what you mean. I can't imagine living without eating fish. Living in a costal area fish is a staple. They do not have a sea in Tibet, I respect their choice though.

What I love about Tibetan culture and believe system is that when they pray they include all sentient beings to end their sufferings and find their enlightenment!!! May be that’s why most Tibetans, especially the old generations seems to be full of “ innere Heiterkeit “(=inner joyfullness).

I am from Mangalore . Place in Karnataka Kerala border side Arabian sea cost .It's also called as Konkan Coast or Canara . Fish is everyday meal here . People who never eat fish and meat are also live here .

I am a han Chinese .I have my opinion about why tibetan don't eat fish .because tibetan used to throw people's corpse to the river ,actually the river is tibetan people's cemetery .especially the people in lhasa don't eat fish .they choose to bury elder's corpse under the river ,so the tibetan bear or wolf can't smell the corpse and eat it ,if tibetan bear or wolf eat too much human corpse ,they will be very dangerous to the elder's offsprings .at this ,I salute to the tibetan ancestors ,how they try to do their best to help their offsprings ,even after they die ,they don't want to waste the precious grassland or farm land which is left for their offsprings to live ,and let their corpse down in the river rest in peace forever ,so deep wisdom and affection in it .and in the deepest level of tibetan people's soul their ancestors are in that fish , they saw the vultures take their ancestors's body fly to the sky ,then they thought their ancestors's corpse must be eaten by fish under the river . not only because of the religion ,but also they have the same affection to their ancestors (fish),though they can't say why they don't eat fish clearly ,this is the real reason .
Beautiful topic jamyang la, love and watching from Ladakh, as there are many similarities between Tibet and Ladakh in terms of language believe culture tradition and of course religion. Many people in Ladakh also don't eat meat and fish with similar belief and faith 🙏🙏🙏

really you are buddhist never see brahmin chhetri buddhist in my whole life but I have seen those people who are buddhist or Hindu but respect both belief and even goes to same mandir temple to pray. there are so many places in himalayan and pahadi region of pakistan, india and Nepal that first hindu guru used to pray there but after the buddhist monks also start praying there anyway jay snatana dharma spread love and peace.

Very nice to see the loving and warm interaction of this young man and his people. But even though the title said otherwise, I expected and waited with baited breath to hear from Tibetans who do eat fish and what was their rationale for doing so while living in that culture. Edit: There was quite a bit of dead fish in that fish market. I would be interested to hear from fishermen as well about their industry.
I must say Tibetan people are the perfect definition of kindness ,compassion and obedient , for me I had my last fish wn I ws lyk 7 or 8 , I had it like once or twice ,it jus doesn’t suit my taste n it’s really hard to eat bt I Neva knew that Tibetan in Tibet Neva eat fish , m jus overwhelmed ! In 2010 I travelled from Lhasa to the North Face Everest Base Camp. On the way we stopped at a Han Chinese restaurant by the river in a small town. One of our dishes was fish, kind of small. We continued our journey upriver along the road and noticed a small gathering on the river bank. Curious we stopped the bus and went down a small ravine to the river bank and realised that the people were cutting up a dead human body into small pieces and feeding it to the fish in the fast flowing crystal clear river ... a funeral rite/ceremony.

Originally, Tibetans wouldn’t eat chicken or even eggs. There’s also a Tibetan saying about only eating flesh of animals with hooves (I.e. cows, sheep) because they are vegetarian and not with claws (chicken etc) because they eat other living beings like worms, so there’s more accumulated sin higher up the food chain.
Tibetan classify meat into two category - from big animal and small animal. Tibetan refrain from eating small animal as it entail killing more animal. Though Tibetan are not vegetarian but they are very selective. Mutton and beef are the most Common meat used. Earlier eating chicken was also discourage as it is a small animal.
@@gyadre Your info about big/small animal has been repeated ad nauseum in the video and other comments below. What I am talking about is the differentiation between not the size but the type of animal too. FYI Dhermochen animals are considered unclean along with being more sinful as they eat other lower animals.

There's no dharmic religion, it's a Hindu nationalist invented term. Buddhism is anti-thesis to Hinduism, even Hinduism itself is not one centralized religion, but a term to describe various religions of the subcont, each with different beliefs and customs.

It synchronizes well with free liberal democratic values. It gives freedom of thought and action and teaches one to be tolerant and frees one from regementations. That is why Hinduism has survived inspite of the daunting challenges of the past and present. Even though it being least organized and inspite of its apparent incoherances.

All the answer I can relate very well.. My granny grown up in Tibet and till the date she doesn’t consume single creature from sea 🌊 or water.. she used to tell me all the same reason.. growing up with her I turn my self as vegetarian from 12 year old 🌱 and I’m proud to say that I’m still vegetarian and would be until I die.. it’s not only just because of being Buddhist, more like living a simple, harmony life and it’s kinda tribute to all the living creature on this earth.. thank you for your amazing work jamyang la..🙏🏻🍀

As a Sherpa born and raised in Kathmandu Nepal, I can vividly remember my mother strictly prohibiting my siblings and myself from holding an aquarium in tje house. Like Tibetan Buddhist, she believed if we kept fish as pets and if they die in our care, that'll be a big sin. She also never cooked fish in the house! No matter how much I urged or threatened (at least tried to) her to cook fish because my adolescent taste buds wanted to have a taste. She always tells me it's a very big sin to kill and eat fish.
I would be lying if I say that I haven't eaten fish! But I now understand the rationale behind my mom's reasonings. Not only it stems from the cultural and spiritual values of Buddhism, but it equally serves an economic and sustainable value in the society. Having said that, I have no hate or dislike towards people who eat fish. Grew up with Newars in Kathmandu who cook fish in almost every celebrations and festivities!!

Not all well intentioned deeds are a good thing.
Releasing ( fishes) or other bigger animals is a common practice in Mahayana Buddhism. If you are a Buddhist practitioner naturally you will adopt a vegetarian diet to abstain from taking animals lives. The criteria of compassion & abstain from killings other beings are one of the tenets of Buddhism. The 5 precepts: 1.) Abstain from killings, 2. )Abstain from sexual misconduct, 3.) Abstain from lying ( dishonest), 4.) No stealing, 5.) Abstain from taking intoxicants.
Our world is in topsy turvy mainly due to killings karma of wanton killings of people & animals.

I am Half Nepali ( Kirati ) and Half Bengali, And I don't eat mutton, but we are allowed to eat "Chhyangra", a mountain goat because I'm half Kirati Nepali, but eat fish because my mother is Bengali. However, my mother's side of the family question why I don't eat mutton but eat something related to mutton ( the mountain goat ). And that is a long story.........
Bengali Brahmins are only Brahmins who eat fish. May be it is due to Maa Kali and her teachings.

Thank you for your video, I really appreciate your work and specially thank you for interviewing our friends Tibetans and accompanying the person who released those fish!
As you may have noticed, in most of the entrances of the monasteries you will find a depiction of the wheel of life (in Tibetan, sipa korlo). In the center of the wheel, you can see three animals: pig, rooster and snake. Right on the outside of the three animals you see some people going up as a result of positive actions and some others going down as the result of engaging in negative actions. In the outer rings of the wheel we can find the depiction of the six worlds (hells, hungry ghosts, animals, humans, demi gods and gods) and in the very outer ring there are the 12 interdependent links.
According to the teachings of our Lord Buddha, the pig represents ignorance and confusion, rooster is related to selfish desire and snake or fish are symbols of anger. Anger, desire and ignorance are the so called three poisons which are the source of our suffering.
This wheel is also a reminder of the essence of the Buddha’s teaching: “practice virtue throughly, do not engage in non-virtue, train your mind completely, this is the teaching of the Buddha’.
Based on this, it is said that eating chicken or eggs increases our selfish desire, eating pork increases our ignorance and confusion and eating fish or snake - which are water animals -increases our selfish aggression or anger.
Dear Jamyang, I kindly request you to consider this and decrease your consumption of meat, specially on sacred days, like full and new moon and the 8th day of the lunar calendar. I know you love eating meat, I’ve seen many times how you enjoy 😀. I am happy you have a good time but as you are a wonderful person and we care for you and your health and as I also know you love all sentient beings I would like to request you to reduce the cause of pain of our mothers.
The full moon is Buddha Amitabha Day, New Moon is Shakyamuni Day and 8th or half moon is Medicine Buddha Day. Buddha Amitabha protects us from famine and shortage, Buddha Shakyamuni protects us from fights and war and Medicine Buddha protects us from illness and epidemics. We as human beings are often tormented by shortage (which is caused by selfish desire) outer and inner conflicts (which are triggered by anger) and illness and diseases (which are caused by confusion and ignorance).
As you already know, we have the power to train our mind and be of benefit for our precious mother beings - thinking of this please consider decreasing your meat consumption, for your own health and happiness!

I am a han Chinese .I have my opinion about why tibetan don't eat fish .because tibetan used to throw people's corpse to the river ,actually the river is tibetan people's cemetery .especially the people in lhasa don't eat fish .they choose to bury elder's corpse under the river ,so the tibetan bear or wolf can't smell the corpse and eat it ,if tibetan bear or wolf eat too much human corpse ,they will be very dangerous to the elder's offsprings .at this ,I salute to the tibetan ancestors ,how they try to do their best to help their offsprings ,even after they die ,they don't want to waste the precious grassland or farm land which is left for their offsprings to live ,and let their corpse down in the river rest in peace forever ,so deep wisdom and affection in it .and in the deepest level of tibetan people's soul their ancestors are in that fish , they saw the vultures take their ancestors's body fly to the sky ,then they thought their ancestors's corpse must be eaten by fish under the river . not only because of the religion ,but also they have the same affection to their ancestors (fish),though they can't say why they don't eat fish clearly ,this is the real reason .

really you are buddhist never see brahmin chhetri buddhist in my whole life but I have seen those people who are buddhist or Hindu but respect both belief and even goes to same mandir temple to pray. there are so many places in himalayan and pahadi region of pakistan, india and Nepal that first hindu guru used to pray there but after the buddhist monks also start praying there anyway jay snatana dharma spread love and peace.

Very nice to see the loving and warm interaction of this young man and his people. But even though the title said otherwise, I expected and waited with baited breath to hear from Tibetans who do eat fish and what was their rationale for doing so while living in that culture.
Edit: There was quite a bit of dead fish in that fish market. I would be interested to hear from fishermen as well about their industry.

I must say Tibetan people are the perfect definition of kindness ,compassion and obedient , for me I had my last fish wn I ws lyk 7 or 8 , I had it like once or twice ,it jus doesn’t suit my taste n it’s really hard to eat bt I Neva knew that Tibetan in Tibet Neva eat fish , m jus overwhelmed !

In 2010 I travelled from Lhasa to the North Face Everest Base Camp. On the way we stopped at a Han Chinese restaurant by the river in a small town. One of our dishes was fish, kind of small. We continued our journey upriver along the road and noticed a small gathering on the river bank. Curious we stopped the bus and went down a small ravine to the river bank and realised that the people were cutting up a dead human body into small pieces and feeding it to the fish in the fast flowing crystal clear river ... a funeral rite/ceremony.

Originally, Tibetans wouldn’t eat chicken or even eggs. There’s also a Tibetan saying about only eating flesh of animals with hooves (I.e. cows, sheep) because they are vegetarian and not with claws (chicken etc) because they eat other living beings like worms, so there’s more accumulated sin higher up the food chain.
Tibetan classify meat into two category - from big animal and small animal. Tibetan refrain from eating small animal as it entail killing more animal. Though Tibetan are not vegetarian but they are very selective. Mutton and beef are the most Common meat used. Earlier eating chicken was also discourage as it is a small animal.
@@gyadre Your info about big/small animal has been repeated ad nauseum in the video and other comments below. What I am talking about is the differentiation between not the size but the type of animal too. FYI Dhermochen animals are considered unclean along with being more sinful as they eat other lower animals.

I am a han Chinese .I have my opinion about why tibetan don't eat fish .because tibetan used to throw people's corpse to the river ,actually the river is tibetan people's cemetery .especially the people in lhasa don't eat fish .they choose to bury elder's corpse under the river ,so the tibetan bear or wolf can't smell the corpse and eat it ,if tibetan bear or wolf ate too much human corpse ,they will be very dangerous to the elder's offsprings .at this ,I salute to the tibetan ancestors ,how they try to do their best to help their offsprings ,even after they die ,they don't want to waste the precious grassland or farm land which is left for their offsprings to live ,and let their corpse down in the river rest in peace forever ,so deep wisdom and affection in it .and in the deepest level of tibetan people's soul their ancestors are in that fish , they saw the vultures take their ancestors's body fly to the sky ,then they thought their ancestors's corpse must be eaten by fish under the river . not only because of the religion ,but also they have the same affection to their ancestors (fish),though they can't say why they don't eat fish clearly ,this is the real reason .
