Your descriptions were spot on, I was able to name 40% of them by you description alone, and I'm 60+ We can all argue what the definition of "Top" is, but you did a great job
Lived all my 63 years in Cincinnati, OH in the US. I didn't know The Seekers were from Australia. They have great songs I remember from my childhood. Midnight Oil and Crowded House are among my favorites from anywhere. Johnny Diesel and the injectors was an enjoyable record though a bit derivative of John Mellencamp. I play guitar so I am really amazed that Tommy Emanuel is not on this list. In recent years, I've really enjoyed the music of Sticky Fingers. Are they anywhere near making this list?
Wikipedia says formed in Melbourne and Neil Finn is the only original member who is a natural kiwi. All other original members were natural Aussies. I don't think they can be counted as an NZ band just because the lead singer is a kiwi. He was living in Aus at the inception of the band. To me its like saying Cold Chisel is Scottish because Jimmy Barnes was born there. Happy to also debate on the country that owns Phar Lap, Pavlova, Russell Crowe and Beet Root on a burger :P
The Church have to in the list as do Spy vs Spy, Sherbert, Ice Cream Hands, Noiseworks and if you’re going to call Crowded House Aussie then you have to say Split Enz which were even better.
I came late to this very good overview. Collected many 60s - 80s Aussie bands (lived in Melbourne and Perth early 90s). Question: Is it top as in best musically, top as in most influential, top as in most collectible, or top as in most popular/successful? Big omissions for me are Missing Links, Masters Apprentices, Billy Thorpe (various incarnations), Spectrum (and alter egos, Murtceps), Twilights, Buffalo (heavy as heavy thing) and more recently, Dead Can Dance and Celibate Rifles. For a while you also had those transplanted brothers from Manchester.....the heebie-jeebies!
Great List and you could go another 30 Aussie Rock bands easy . Master Apprentices Redgum Daddy Cool Zoot The Eurogliders Jo Jo Zep and The Falcons Mondo Rock Shebert The Screaming Jets; Jet Axium The Baby Animals Big Pig Killing Heidi Goanna Gangagang The Radiators Ol'55 The Church Billy Thorpe and The Aztecs Blackfeather Wolfmother 360 Bliss n Eso Johnny Chester & Jigsaw Paul Kelly & The Dots Paul Kelly & The Coloured Girls Paul Kelly & The Messagers Mental As Anything & The Black Sorrows.
Rose Tattoo, The Hitmen, Rose Tattoo, The Wreckery, Rose Tattoo, Wolfmother, Rose Tattoo, The Party Boys, Rose Tattoo, Jet, Rose Tattoo, Airbourne and maybe you could have mentioned Rose Tattoo.
I don't get why Tame Impala would not be considered a group :-/ Personally, I've never heard of them... but I do vividly remember *BABY ANIMALS, ROSE TATTOO, SCREAMING JETS, THE HITMEN & WOLFMOTHER*
I don't count them as australian. Their career took off when they left the country. Most of their music was made when they established themselves overseas.
@@solitudeausmusic They were huge in Australia before they took off overseas. Just like AC/DC and heaps of other Australian bands. They were managed by the Australian entrepreneur Robert Stigwood.
TLE, H&C, M&W and Divinyls are shockingly low. Silverchair deserves Top 3. AC/DC, INXS, Silverchair, Midnight Oil, Crowded House shuold be the top 5 imo

The definitive list. Well done.
No King Gizzard at all, no Hush?
The Church have to in the list as do Spy vs Spy, Sherbert, Ice Cream Hands, Noiseworks and if you’re going to call Crowded House Aussie then you have to say Split Enz which were even better.
I like how this list included bands that get looked over by the hipsters and gatekeepers (Air Supply, The Seekers)
Good list I mostly agree and yes Crowded House is an Aussie band/group .Acca Dacca is definitely the #1
He forgot Split Enz

When it comes to most 'Top' lists it's usually a combination of all of ththings you mentioned. That is what I have tried to apply for this list.
