Since the pandemic I’ve been showing my daughter (special needs adult but like 4 years old) your videos. She LOVES them and every day now asks me if we can do this. She’s even shown my ex and I a suitcase in the shops she wants to use on the train! Even if we can never go I’d like to thank you for these and the enjoyment and knowledge you’ve given us. @Grounded Life Travel

the train has local services for a quick turn around trip, just so she can enjoy the train and not get overly stimulated or fatigued. There are special fares for differently abled people and care givers. Good Luck and buy her that suitcase.

I've just started traveling by train after years of wishing for the chance. Years ago I took the train from Chicago to Minneapolis and knew that Amtrak was going to be my preferred method of travel, but it wasn't until this year that I could make that a reality. In the past half year I've traveled several times between my home town of Fort Worth and Grand Rapids via Chicago. It's amazing how each trip is the same but also very different, depending on the staff. It's always a great trip, don't get me wrong, but one particular trip was just outstanding all because of the sleeping car attendant. Now I'm planning more trips this summer and next fall. Your videos have been a huge help and inspiration.

I've watched your scenic, entertaining & informative video no fewer than 8x since you premiered it. I rarely comment but enjoy reading others' comments. Mostly I watch your video journeys on my TV set. I ❤❤❤❤ your chemistry, your love for rail travel, all the amazing room tours and, oh yah, how you really eat and enjoy your food.
Allie, because of you, I always add mango syrup to my unsweetened iced tea whenever I visit the Metropolitan Lounge at Moynihan Train Hall.👍🏼 Rob, I so enjoy how you not only enjoy every bite of a juicy burger or steak, but you seem to worship it on your plate. I'm a burger-lovin' gal.👍🏼 From both of you I've learned to buy a pizza pie AND a serving of pasta so that I can have a dipping bread.😀
So many of your well-produced vids are my faves. Most recently ... your beautiful Italian itinerary by rail and those gorgeous homes and hotel rooms. The digs in (I forget the spelling but here goes) Monopoli was AMAZING!

Usually the southbound Texas Eagle arrives, and then a few hours later the eastbound or westbound Sunset Limited arrives. Two cars, a sleeper and a coach are shunted either heading northbound to the Texas Eagle or westbound to the Sunset Limited. The northbound Texas Eagle doesn't head northbound until after dawn whereas the Sunset Limited heads off as soon as the shunting is done. Usually the last two cars on the Sunset Limited and Texas Eagle are the two cars shunted...

My one observation riding the Texas Eagle from Chicago to Dallas (and back) was the incessant blowing of the whistle (horn) approaching crossings. It's especially annoying when your car is close to the locomotive. If I knew how to do it, I would always opt for the car closet to the end of the train.
But despite this annoyance, I find train travel far more relaxing than flying or driving.
My bride & I will be traveling in July via Amtrak - Windsor CT -> Springfield MA -> Chicago (Lake Shore Ltd); Chicago -> New Orleans via City of New Orleans; New Orleans -> Washington DC (Crescent); Washington DC back to Windsor CT (Northeast Regional).
I'm already pondering the next excursion after that.

I have ridden the Texas Eagle/Sunset limited seven times in the past 18 months, but only between Los Angeles and Tucson. These trains only run at night and therefore have no meals or food service ( unless they run very late into the next morning ). A roomette would be impractical for such a short trip with no amenities. Thanks to you I can experience them vicariously. One question: What is your favorite way to pass time on the train other than, of course, eating, filming, sightseeing?

Question: between L.A. and San Antonio, how many cars did you walk through to get from your sleeping car to the dining car? I ask because my wife and I will be taking the exact same route, Los Angeles to Chicago, starting May 3rd. I love that you now add subtitles to your videos, especially the ones that show where the scenery is being filmed. That really gives some context to what we are seeing. I love your channel and when I see people on other social media sites asking questions about Amtrak trains, I always refer them to your channel. That is the best compliment I can give you!

If you are only going to San Antonio you may be in the Sunset Limited section of the train, but we were on the part going to Chicago. We had to walk through quite a few to get there, but I can't remember how many. We were in the very last car in the back. Again though we were going to Chicago.

@@GroundedLifeTravel Thanks for replying so quickly. We are going all the way to Chicago, so I know we will be at the back of the train until San Antonio and then the front of the train the rest of the way to Chicago. I had a feeling there would be at least 4 or 5 cars between the last car and the dining car. I guess we will find out in May.

Hi there! My husband and I just went from San Antonio to Tucson and back. We went out on the Sunset Limited and back on the Texas Eagle. There are four cars between the Texas Eagle sleeper car and the dining car on the Texas Eagle/Sunset Limited. You'll walk through three coaches and the observation car. I speak of this feelingly because my husband is mobility impaired and wanted to see how Amtrak would work for him. Of course, our attendant would have happily brought him all his meals, but he wanted to walk it for one meal. I can't say enough about how kind the Amtrak people are. The conductor helped with the doors between the cars and the dining car attendant booked our table close to the door so he didn't have to walk all the way through the dining car. Anyway, the answer to your question is four cars NOT counting either the sleeper car or the dining car. We had the family bedroom which meant he had to walk all the way through the sleeper car and up/down the stairs. He did manage it successfully, if slowly.
My daughter and I traveled on the Texas Eagle between San Antonio and Dallas. There were two coaches between the sleeper car and the cafe car going north and, as I recall, the cafe car was between the sleeper car and the coaches on the way back. I hope this helps.
Definitely enjoy the scenery! I loved seeing how the desert changes between Arizona, New Mexico and West Texas.
I agree that this is the BEST channel for Amtrak information! My whole family are now Amtrak enthusiasts. None of us will fly if Amtrak can get us there. Getting There is Half the Fun!!
Oh, and just a couple of things for people who complain that Amtrak is never on time. 1) I view Amtrak schedules as being on AST - Amtrak Standard Time. If it's no more than an hour late, it's on time! and 2) we had locomotive issues on the way out to Tucson, which put us 3 hours late getting into Tucson. (Amtrak handled it very well, by the way.). The following week, my daughter was due to fly to Las Vegas. Her flight was canceled and she couldn't get on another flight for 36 hours. 36 hours late vs. 3 hours late?? Amtrak for the win!!

@@deborahrutherford9025 Hi Deborah. Thank you very much for taking the time to provide such a thorough reply to my question. I'm sorry to hear about your husband's mobility impairment, but if he was able to walk through all those cars to reach the dining car, I tip my hat to him. I know how long a single coach car is, and with the train sometimes swaying it is not always easy to keep your balance. But to walk through three coach cars and one observation car...that is mighty impressive!
My wife and I saw a lot of scenery changes last year taking the Southwest Chief from Los Angeles to Chicago and then the Empire Builder from Chicago to Seattle. Watching the scenery change is definitely one of the best things about traveling by Amtrak.
I agree about the Amtrak personnel. All the Amtrak employees we encountered on both trains we took last year were great. Wonderful personalities and would help with anything we asked about or needed. I asked for, and got permission to take pictures of, my two sleeping car attendants and the two Lead Service Attendants in the dining car. Great memories of those folks.
We had a locomotive problem on the Southwest Chief last year. Ended up putting us into Chicago 4 hours 57 minutes late. But, hey, that just means more fun time on the train! I bring a portable scanner radio with me so I could hear the conversations between the engineer and conductor. Many people do this and there is nothing illegal or against the rules about doing this. I just make sure to use ear buds so I don't disturb other passengers.
Take care, and I hope you and your husband have many wonderful rail travel adventures in your future.

thank you for these awesome videos. for year probably decades I have wanted to be on the train on christmas eve. you know, experience the special night on the "Christmas train." This year I did it, but there is no bedrooms available. I got a roomette from Cincinnati to Los Angeles and I was wondering if I should request the accessible room? I have bad arthritis and who knows how bad it will be with colder weather? Any suggestions?

So cool get on train and go right to sleep. Born in Tucson and worked for SP/UP railroad for 40 years in mechanical department never went on the trains. One main problem on being on the head car is you hear the horn at all crossings.

Yes for sure, the advantage though is if you want to get a picture of it, you can run up at a shorter stop. We find it's always hard to get pictures from the back.

I’ve not done the TEagle because of the late departure out of Los Angeles, plus when the train separates the Traditional menu becomes Flexible

We don't mind the switch as the Eagle is so long the menu can get repetitive on the last day.

Hopefully by the end of 2024 Amtrak brings traditional dining back to every sleeper overnight train. Maybe the airline style pre-prepared frozen food works for shorter regional day trains, it sucks with sleeper overnight trains...

I always end up going in the opposite direction that you guys do. My spring break (I teach) is from Austin to San Jose. I'm taking the Texas Eagle to LA, and then Coast Starlight from LA. It's the first time I'll get to visit a lounge. That's in 2 -weeks. I get a very long and cool trip in July (MIA-DC-CHI-SEA-JNE-ANC-FAI). I would love to see you guys
I think Rob might break the all-time for sleeping upper bunk on a train. I did on 4-berth in Vietnam, and I got the upper deck.
