It is the material the socks are made from. It should not wear off. They remind me of a thin version of the bottoms of my fishing waders (i.e. the neoprene booty section).
I bought a pair of these a couple of years ago to wade in creeks while fly fishing. They are definitely not "waterproof" for very long. The thin layer of neoprene does help to keep your feet warm in cold water, but work more like surfing booties after a while. Water gets in for sure...
Lasted 2 winters, always hand washed when needed and rotated 2 pairs so they had time to rest/dry...now they just do a good job at holding the water in :(
Nice video! Thanks for your review! By the way, they are machine washable but hand wash is better. Water temperature should be below 40 degree centigrade. Do not iron, dry clean or tumble dry.
Only five minutes submerged in water is hardly enough time to display performance longevity. The real question is. How long do they hold up to prolonged use in the field/outdoors 🤔⁉.

Loving your review videos! Please keep them coming!! Curious though, could you wear these over other socks? I would worry that, when worn alone, they would not wick away moisture (sweat) from your feet on the inside. Curious to know your thoughts after you have had time to further experiment with them!! Again, thank you for these review videos!! 👍
Elizabeth D I have not tried that, but can’t imagine it would not work. I wear socks inside my wader booties which are similar. The only issue would be thickness getting into your boots. If you size up, it would add extra warms and wicking. I often wear liner socks (thin, synthetic) inside my wool socks.
I work in a meat shop where I’m scrubbing blood off the floors several times a day. Running the hose and squeegees so much I’m constantly soaking my feet and no waterproof shoe in my budget has actually held up. These seem like they’ll keep the moisture out but my question is how well do they hold up to constant wear? How often will I need to replace them if I’m wearing them 40-50 hours a week?
Tough to say. I use them to raft, but even at that it’s only a dozen times per year until the weather turns. I’d give a pair a try and see. They are like a thin neoprene material.
I would say no. They do not have a gasket at the top. It would probably hold for a quick submersion. But a long time, they definitely get water in over the top. I think they make taller ones. Thanks for watching.
POOR REVIEW- WHY? BECAUSE IT WAS ONLY TESTED FOR A FEW MINUTES, I HAVE THESE SOCKS AND THEY DONT WORK PROPERLY! Bottom part of sock still works, but above the ankle water seeps in to the sock then the sock holds in the water! dont buy... Are you getting commission from the seller?
Sorry your results are not as good as mine. I bought these with my own money and have no affiliation with the manufacturer. I still use mine for whitewater and rafting. I have had positive results.

Good question, I actually just washed mine after rafting today. I soaked then in vinegar, hand soap, and warm water. I rinsed them and hung them to dry.
your video is complete nonsense....because no one puts them on for that short of time....so sweating is also an issue.....you have to demonstrate someone who has hiked, all day in these....
Is the waterproofing from the material or a special coating? Just wondering if it wears off after a lot of uses/washes.
Nice review video! Keep it up.

Got an identical for Christmas. Have used them on bike rides in sub-freezing temps. Very pleased!

Get a chance to test them in the field for hikes in muddy conditions yet? Wondering if the breathability helps keep your foot from getting too sweaty.
I have not used for hiking much yet. I usually use non-waterproof trailrunners for most of the year. I used them rafting a few times and loved them.

Going to alaskan tundra. What budget parka brand do you recommend? What brand for boots, snow pants, gloves, under layer etc??

@@OutsideChronicles Didn't think about the bulk!! Thanks for the info and reply!!
I'm glad I know I can slosh in water for a couple minutes. Let's see a hike.

@@OutsideChronicles thanks for responding brother, I went ahead and got a pair so we’ll see how they hold up.
@@AdamGall Be sure to report back. I would like to know if they hold up or are crap.
@@AdamGallhow’d it go?
Hello! Can you share how bulky these are? Are they like double wool socks?
They are about as heavy as my expedition Darn Tough socks. They are a very thin neoprene.
it the inside water proof too? wondering if i could drink from them
Yes, the inside will hold water. Not sure I would rely on that or want to drink from stinky socks, unless it was an emergency.
I found your channel looking for waterproof socks. Great video and channel. Good stuff. Subscribed. ✌️
Thanks brother, I returned the favor. You have some interesting content as well. Will be watching several of your videos.
Thanks! I am actually going to order some of those socks. ✌️
@@ASTHECROWFLIESHIKING Cool, let me know how they work for you.
Weatherproof Vintage Men's Crew Socks, the same? Costco sale 5 pairs for $7 til 12/24/21
I doubt it, these are like a thin neoprene material. Those just say weatherproof, my guess synthetic or wood.
Are they still waterproof if you're in water the sock is completely submerged in say knee deep water?
I would say no. They do not have a gasket at the top. It would probably hold for a quick submersion. But a long time, they definitely get water in over the top. I think they make taller ones. Thanks for watching.
If you were to go swimming with those socks, would they still keep your feet dry?
No, there is no gasket for your calves/ankles. If the water is higher than the top of the sock, water will get in.
@@OutsideChronicles Thanks!
Did you wash it with waterproof water?
Ha, I appreciate the sarcasm. You can actually machine wash them in cold or warm water and hang dry.
👌
Any updates? Do you still like them?
I do, I have not used them much for hiking. I have used them more for rafting. For hiking, they were too warm.
@@OutsideChronicles I’m going to give them a try. I’ll test them in the sink over my hands to see how well they work or I’ll send them back.
Thanks I'll be buying a pair.
Cool, thanks for watching.
How the hell would you wash them😵🫡
I hand wash them, however they do have machine wash instructions.

How do you wash it
Machine washable on cold, hang to dry.
@@OutsideChronicles you said in your video hand wash and not too machine wash. Which is it?

If you sweat that much you need help, not waterproof socks.
