    In WW2, almost all of the hangar doors would be left open when conducting launch and recovery as they would warm up the engines in the hangar before raising the planes up to the flight deck via the elevators.

    Once again, a hearty well done! A couple of "builds to your fine presentation for those who may be on the "Pontos vs MK/KA" fence. Both are excellent products, but differ (as you point out) in their approach and depth of detail.
    MK/KA does a lot with overlaying the Trumpeter kit parts (for example adds railings to the Trumpeter catwalks), while Pontos has you toss out the Trumpeter catwalks and has you completely build the catwalks from brass (grates, understructure, rails, etc)... very delicate, but beautiful. Also, Pontos has you build duct work that sits along the outer hanger deck walls, while MK/KA either uses Trumpeter parts or does not address. The same is true for the details on the island, MK/KA often adds to Trumpeter kit parts, while Pontos tosses out Trumpeter parts and has you build from scratch.
    Another point is that you stressed the "need to get everything to fit together" YES, YES and YES!!! Unlike, say the Missouri kit, which had mostly stand-alone components, the Enterprise kit has many areas where the parts all have to mesh exactly. A small error in placement, or nub not filed off, or too much CA glue can result in rework to get everything to align properly.
    Yes, the Pontos instruction are larger and much better than the "good old days" (all the way back to last year!) I suggest and strongly recommend that modelers go to the Pontos website and download the instructions. This will allow you to blow up the pages to as much as 400X a can be invaluable for working on some of the uber-delicate assemblies. I now do my detail work in front of my PC so that I can see every last detail. Also, the website shows overall views that help with orientation of the assemblies (the instructions only show sub-assemblies), and provide some thoughts as to which roll up doors might be displayed open.
    Lastly, fear not.... Yes there's enough 20mm guns to put a big smile on your face (or not!), but the Enterprise has the early war version that is a bit simpler than our favorite Missouri version. The early version didn't have that funky electronic "box" on the shield and the "aiming thing" toward the rear. A small consolation, but could cut assembly time by about 25%.
    Again, great presentation. looking forward your build AFTER you slay the twin Titanic builds and settle into your new job. Best regards!

    Been watching you since the Arizona build. In the future I do plan on building a ship myself and would strive to be as detailed as you are. With the high expense of the pontos and other kit . I was wondering if you have built anything from the metal earth or piececool models that are all metal and require bending metal into shapes. They can be very delicate to work with and as small as some of the details you work with. My thinking was to familiarize myself with these to prepair myself with the techniques required to work with the brass and much more expensive stuff. If you do try one please let us know if they translate to working with the brass kits. Or do a video of you building one to let us know if it does translate or not. Thanks for the great videos and keep up the great content!

    I am new to the channel. I love the presentation and I can't wait to see the Enterprise build start. Really looking forward to it. I am wary of telling an expert modeler how to go about their craft but make sure you use epoxy to secure the large brass plates. Other modelers have had them peel off using ca. Something to do with the brass expanding and contracting with temperature I think.

    • @TheMidwestModelShop

      That’s great advice! I’m probably going to use E600. It’s very sticky right away, but takes 24 hours to fully cure. Allowing you time to make adjustments. When it finally sets up, it’s actually flexible. That will accommodate some movement.

    great post of the Pontos set. Between the two you will have one kick butt build. Ben, looking at the decals, they are common for multiple carriers so I am thinking maybe the large plane decals are for the Hornet B-25 Tokyo Raid. those wings would be large enough poaaibly

    • @raybame5816
      @raybame5816 Рік тому

      I doubt it. The Raid was April 18, 1942, when the planes still carried the tri color roundels. In fact Ted Lawson mentions in the book that Japanese on the ground waved to them as they flew low; probably seeing the red meatball much like their rising sun.

    I thought the KA kit was impressive, but man, the Pontos kit is off the charts. Ben, any idea if the Pontos kit includes all the deck hooks tie-downs and fittings that goes with the wooden deck, like the KA kit? Both kits combined, we’re looking at almost 1k$ in aftermarket parts…

  • @Swellington_
    @Swellington_ Рік тому +1

    I've noticed that most of the Pontos detail kits are more expensive than the actual model kit, but then again you get a ton of really really good stuff, veneer decking included, from what I can remember from just browsing Amazon and eBay (wishful thinking🙄) and a 200th scale Bismarck or Iowa runs around $250-350 and a full Pontos kit is $500+, that's a huge investment for a model kit but then again, how long is it gonna keep ya busy? I imagine a very long time and when it's done it's something that almost everyone will show just a little bit of interest when seeing it displayed in your home where as if it was a 16th scale tank nobody will probably ever take a second glance, but whatever, I wanna try one eventually but it's a huge commitment

      My eyes lately have been terribly photosensitive and in pain, impairing reading, so I cannot always be certain of what I have seen or read. Please forgive me for my confusion.
      Did Trumpeter sometime ago issue a 1:200th-scale kit of the USS Hornet CV-8 U.S. Navy Yorktown-class Aircraft Carrier? And from that, have they more recently released a similar kit of the USS Enterprise CV-6 Aircraft Carrier? (This is what I thought I a couple of weeks ago had seen.)
