@@annalinevanluvender1384 Thats not right, Michael Mayer was the director for the original cast of American Idiot, the original Rent production was directed by Jonathan Larsen, until he passed away the night before its premiere on off-Broadway.
I don't like it. I feel like the lead singers voice is just not right for this type of music. But hey, thats just my opinion. Still love Green Day tho:D
This is actually a really good show and not just for us Green Day fans. I saw it with a non-Green Day, theatre geek and she liked it. There's actually a good story and political statement behind the GD songs.
On a serious note about this show, I am 21. I saw it last year. I loved it. My friend loved it. My 60+ year old professor hated it. My guess is that he did not know the music and so it didn't make much sense to him. I enjoyed the show. Beautiful underline, beautiful visuals, beautiful singing. It was great.
I'm in my late 50s. I flew out to see it 4x on Broadway and I've seen it twice since on tour. I've always loved the album, but I hated it the first time I saw it because I thought that the music and a "Broadway" rendition just didn't mesh. I obviously changed my mind later, but I just wanted to say that there are other reasons not to like the musical other than not knowing the music
@@sisterheresy Agreed. Greenday was the shiz back in the 90's when I was in my heyday. I like Musicals, I was a theater Geek, myself! But Broadway voices singing punk music... just... 🤔🙉 Also, Hamilton makes my ears bleed. All I can think is WWNWAD? (What would NWA do?) 🤭🤣 It ain't seem right. But perhaps that's precisely what makes it right? I mean look at Josephine Baker! She was a total revolutionary on the stage, even though Broadway was too racist for her back then. So we've come a long way, baby. There are plenty of revolutionary musicals.... Hair... Jesus Christ Super Star... etc. So why not Greenday? There was also an element of humor in all the aforementioned revolutionary stage productions. I'm not trying to shit on these Broadway productions. I do appreciate that, paradoxically, they lent a platform to the revolutionary spirit of the younger audience. And tied in history. The musical production aspect is just really funny to me... Which I suppose is good, bc we shouldn't take ourselves too damn seriously. 🤷♀️ After all, Billy himself is laughing his sellout old punk ass all the way to the bank. (And I like him a lot, so I mean that in the most endearing of ways.)
dear broadcasters...you're not fooling us with that cutaway...if we are tuned in and listening to this song bc we love Green Day, we know the real words :)
This show is fantastic, Tony performances never do a show full justice. And stark! You will never escape your adorableness no matter how hard you try, at least for me. And if it doesn't conform to your "type" of musical then Green Day was successful in making their musical. It's a rock opera people- get over it!
I saw this one on Broadway and it was fantastic. Recordings of it don't give it justice and the atmosphere in the room is just superb. I went into it not knowing what to expect, but it ended up being one of my favorite musicals. If any of you get a chance to see it, I would highly recommend that you do. A fantastic show with a fantastic cast.
genela c That sucks. This would have been an amazing medley that not everyone would have done, it would have provided an amazing opportunity to sing different songs packed with different kinds of emotion. Frozen is just overdone.
I saw the whole show live in Glasgow last year. It was fucking amazing, (I saw it with the British touring cast instead of the original cast). The music is incredible, the vocals are great, and the story line is perfect. It's so relatable to being a teenager too, which is why I love the album in the first place, but the musical brought that to life.
If there's one reason I wish I lived in America it would be because of its theatre scene. I came here after I read John Gallagher jr.'s wiki profile. I got to know of him after watching the Newsroom on tv in which he is amazing. I've been going through clips and clips, and I feel like, even though I was born in not such a bad generation I'm grossly missing out on some great things in life. Like this show. And Spring Awakening. And Hamilton. And I don't really know what else but I am sure there's more. Hopefully, at some point they'll come to Bombay? With Johnny Gallagher, of course.
That would feel somewhat scary/intimidating having the man that sing that song watching over your performance haha. I'm sure Billie would love watching people singing his music and sharing his story and views though!
I think broadway needed a wake-up call something they have never seen before. This was it. I have seen the whole show on UA-cam it is awesome, and moving it deals with different things that people can relate to. With John Gallagher jr and stark sands this cast is awesome. Rock on well done greenday!!!!!
i think 21st century breakdown needs to be a franchise. when i listen to 21st century breakdown, i think danger days, yknow? the whole idea of standing up against the government and the people who are doing shit wrong?
AndrewUnknown of course it did, it’s still highly political but it’s also kind of a love story - Christian and Gloria, it tells a story of their start to their rebellion. The rebellion raging around them is the best part undoubtedly but they are key.
I love how Billie Joe just walks in.. he's so chill lol
You know, just speaking at the Tonys in front of thousands of people, no big deal
"hello...how are you?... good"
he has a squip
Fr lol😂
If this is Radio City (maybe?) it's one of the smaller audiences he's walked out to in the past few decades.
The New York Times called this “a glorious temper tantrum” and that’s the best thing ever
Of course they say that. The song is calling them out
@@HedgeWolf23 you are aware that that does not actually have to be negative, especially with the word 'glorious' attached to it?

I’d put money on it 😂

I know! I was about to comment this exactly!
We watched this in my theater class, we talked about her a little
Moritz did make it to America!!!!
keziadickensoo88 the sound I made was not human. You just made my day.
ok you all are killing me with the Moritz comments😭💕
then he became a journalist and a news producer...
Hahaha
This is my favorite comment ever right nowb
"Ok, I'm going to pretend I'm not reading right now." XD
I love how it's such a punkish number but when they all sing together it still sounds like a musical
And the first guy sounds like a theatre guy and not a rockstar
Plus sized dude fucking rocks tho! Wish I knew his name

You can tell this stage direction was inspired by RENT.
53rdAndThird the whole musical has a RENT feel to it
