But how important it is to remember that in our homes, sitting on our couch, watching the news images, we are seeing the reality of yet another war with no practical meaning. The images are illustrative of our persistence in the stupidity of war. We only have one planet... do we even respect that? Can we focus on getting along with each other? The image of a being kneeling with his hands over his face leaning over someone dead at that moment is too revolting. Are we really that stupid? Life is more important than death and evil. This musical theme is very well done, it tells us what we should always see: peace on Earth. It's so simple. March 18, 2022
Thanks for bringing some Jane Siberry to the channel, even if only obliquely. She is one of the few artist I’d call actually astonishing. You may not be aware that she’s also prog-adjacent, having been very influenced by Yes early on. If you haven’t heard it, “Mimi On The Beach” - her apocalyptic take on a summer pop tune - is a good example. Jane’s forays in the extended epic format are often hallucinatory, and utterly unique, with “The Empty City” and “The White Tent the Raft” being good examples. Yet she is also gifted at investing the simplest songs with the most devastating power. “The Lobby,” for instance, always brings me to tears; especially from the moment when it pivots on the sound of a busking, street-corner brass ensemble. So simple, yet so effective.
Still grieving 2 years on,….still searching for my angels. Wow, a breathtaking song Doug. I just became a huge fan! Got me a bit weepy, but the beauty of that song is just remarkable. Certainly the real deal. Thanks Doug!
i love your enthusiastic and supportive energy. i discovered jane siberry at the age of 15, and i thought that was normal. i assumed everybody must adore her, and finding out that isn't the case was my sad introduction to the dark side of how capitalism fucks with artistry. it's not the lightning, it's not the thunder, it's not the fireworks or battle that will bring people to their knees. it's the still, small voice, it's the quiet act of faith in the face of homogeny.
In my late 50s now and primarily a Blues, Prog, and Metal guy.....I am very familiar with these exceedingly talented ladies! Thanks for taking the time to highlight a great selection from them! Cheers to you and a great channel....have a great weekend!
Hey there Doug. I just wanted to leave a comment and say; I couldn't sympathize more with what you are saying at 12:05 till 12:22 . I am 24 and I have high functioning aspergers and have had suicidal thoughts for nearly a decade now. But what you say here, that despite all the hurt and hate, there is beauty and love in this world that I still long for, that's why I stay too. Thank you for phrasing it so beautifully. And thank you for adding some to mine.
May the Ukrainian people endure and be victorious. I can barely imagine what you are going through, but for what it's worth you have the support and well-wishing of myself and everyone else I know here in England (more than our government is showing). Wishing you strength and courage
I love The Wailin' Jennys, probably my favorite song of theirs is "Arlington". That song blows me away every time. Yes, they are the real deal and one of my favorite folk artists. Right up there with Elephant Revival, The Shook Twins, and, of course, The Audreys. And as a Brooklynite, I have a soft spot for the local band, Hem. Laughing at how everyone in the Comments is bombarding you with songs and artists that they want you to play - there isn't enough time left on Earth! And these are comments from just one song! Perhaps you can access one of the supposed hidden dimensions to cover all of the song suggestions? Thanks for the cover. It's a beautiful set of lyrics sung by an amazing trio of ladies.
What a surprise but a very good surprise. I love the Wailin Jennys and have loads of great songs of their own but Jane Sisberry is also a fantastic singer songwriter. But I was so so surprised that you picked this as you mostly play Prog Rock. I came to your channel via your selection of the Great “Big Big Train”. Keep up the good work
In a letter written to his daughter, or granddaughter [forgive the memory loss on that one!], read after his passing, Albert Einstein wrote that the strongest force in the universe, is LOVE!. Emotional song, beautifully and perfectly performed. Thankyou Doug.
Doug, big fan of the channel and a Doug here. Being fan of Maiden I'm sure you've heard it but check out "When the Wild wind blows" and "The Legacy". Two rather overlooked songs but both pure brilliance. I came to admire their music late in life as well, it's been fun going through all these albums discovering so much great music. Thanks for this channel, it's one of the most interesting things on youtube.
I totally agree with your views about what is happening in the world at the moment. Man’s cruelty is just beyond comprehension or understanding with what is happening in Ukraine. But it is great we have music and beautiful words to at times to express our feelings…..no other medium in my opinion does that. So thanks for picking this beautiful song……..just a plug for you to listen to a new band from Norway called “Meer” fabulous band (Prog, folk rock…..whatever genre you want to put them they are fabulous. I’m not from Norway but another troubled region called Northern Ireland ( that knows a lot about conflict and doing harm to your fellow human brothers and sisters)
Hey Doug, you said this filled your soul. I would love for you to do Stormy Monday from the Allman Brothers Band, live at Fillmore. It's one of my go to songs. I would love to hear from Allman Brothers and Gov't Mule's first and second album, self title and Dose
Thanks for posting, Doug. The Jennys are great and I saw them just last week in Portland. Another female artist to look at is the amazing Rachel Flowers,

When I saw "Calling All Angels", my mind first went to a song by Train (link below). Then I saw The Wailin' Jennys, and my mind then went to the singer, Waylon Jennings. But to be honest, I'm glad it was neither!! I've not heard of The Wailin' Jennys. What lovely voices!! And what a lovely song. A perfect example of sometimes less is more. And a perfect way to 'force' myself to slow down for a minute from this crazy world of technology (he says as he writes a comment on a social media platform...), that makes it so easy to fill up every second of our waking days. Train - Calling All Angels ua-cam.com/video/TaG9SDxwPBg/v-deo.html
I would recommend you listen to a group called Libera, “Going home” suggest the church version because it has lyrics and extra verse. A musical performance set in a beautiful church or cathedral.
Hey Doug! Greetings from Brazil! I would like to leave s suggestion to you to listen. It is a álbum called Clube da Esquina by Milton Nascimento and Lo Borges. Especially the songs "tudo que você podia ser" (everything you could be) and "Um girassol da cor do seus cabelos" (a sunflower with your hair color). This álbuns one of the most influential in the Tropicalia movement and in Brazilian culture from the 60s and 70s
Doug if you get a chance check out I’m With Her. These three ladies put out some great Folk/ Nu Grass sound. Sara Watkins, Aoife O’Donovan and Sarah Jarosz. Sara play with Nickel Creek and Chris Thile your current host for A Prairie Home Companion.
If you'd like to hear what could be a "care givers anthem", one was written by Francis for her 2016 album, "Things I Never Said." It also goes to the core of the matter. The song is called "Dont Worry About Me." My favorite cover version of this was released by Lara Fabian in the pandemic as an encouragement for her fans. You can find it on UA-cam at: "Lara Fabian | Don't worry about me (Frances COVER)"
You should check out the Be Good Tanyas, they are another Canadian trio. Little Birds or Waitin’ Around to Die (Townes Van Zandt cover) are two of their best.
If you’re reviewing music from female artists for women’s week, then you MUST react to the legendary Kate Bush! I recommend a long-player reaction to side B of her album Hounds of Love. It is its own musical movement divided into seven tracks. There is a LOT to explore break down compositionally throughout it
Lovely track - very Sarah McLachlan... Similar stuff you could try that you might not know: Eddi Reader (with or without Fairground Attraction), David Baerwald: Born for Love or China Lake, Jesca Hoop: City Bird or anything else.
Lovely. If you like these you'll probably enjoy The Indigo Girls, if you don't already know them. (Not their more recent work, as Emily's voice has sadly deteriorated.)
Can't beat Jane & KD, but it might help to know the Jennys are (mostly) Canadian too. The three original members Cara Luft, Nicky Mehta, and Ruth Moody are all Canadian and formed the group in Winnipeg. Cara eventually left but Nicky and Ruth are still there with Heather Masse, who admittedly is American but she's from Maine so maybe Canadianish?
But how important it is to remember that in our homes, sitting on our couch, watching the news images, we are seeing the reality of yet another war with no practical meaning.

Taxi Ride
simply spectacular we are so lucky
So lovely. And your piano accompaniment was lovely as well. Thanks.

Jane Siberry? Wow. She's amazing and very quirky. I loved her stuff in the 80's.
What a wonderful accompanist you are!

Thanks for this selection Doug! Love it when you do a variety. Please keep it coming.
As a Ukrainian, I thank you for thinking about us and doing the charity video. Beautiful, touching song. 💙 💛

Thank you for this today! I know this meant a lot to me and many other watching
Thanks for introducing me to this beautiful song, Doug. Absolutely love your channel.
Ty Doug for this...
Love the Jennys
Love them Jennys

Hey y´.....Doug. :) A greeting from Sweden. Love your videos. Hope you continue with them for a long time.
Thank you Peter. Truly appreciate your support.

Beautiful song and well said Doug! Hopefully all the pain and darkness in the world will transform into beautiful loving light!
In a letter written to his daughter, or granddaughter [forgive the memory loss on that one!], read after his passing, Albert Einstein wrote that the strongest force in the universe, is LOVE!. Emotional song, beautifully and perfectly performed. Thankyou Doug.
Sometimes, simple is best.

You REALLY must hear the composer Jane Siberrys version. Hauntingly beautiful. It was featured in the movie "Pay It Forward".
Lovely
Thanks for this, I hadn’t heard this cover. Jane Siberry is one of my favorite artists. I’d love to see you analyze The Taxi Ride.
Huge Jane Siberry fan. Lots of good stuff from her. Would love to hear you hit some of her.
Hey Doug from the UK. Just a beautiful variation on the usual. Just lovely. All the best Dave from the album review channel
I remember this song at the very end of movie Pay it Forward. With how the movie ends it was an appropriate song. A tear jerker.😢
Songs can be so therapeutic. Two that I go to when I'm feeling a little blue; All The World by Kansas and Any Major Dude by Steely Dan.
I totally agree with your views about what is happening in the world at the moment. Man’s cruelty is just beyond comprehension or understanding with what is happening in Ukraine. Very nice. Thanks for sharing Doug. I think you'd love 'Across the Bridge Where Angels Dwell' by Van Morrison.

Reminds me of Nanci Griffith, who also wrote about angels, and was and is one herself.
More light!

Jeremy also plays, or did, with Ruth's brother Richard in a great band called the Bills.
You make only an hour and a half away sound like next door! That's 80+ miles!
I grew up in the American midwest...driving 3 hours (one way) for lunch and shopping wasn't unheard of
Wow, that was live!?!
This would fit in perfectly on a soundtrack of a small independent film about loss.
Eye of Melian - Vita Nova (single edit - Official Video) - YOU WON'T REGRET THIS IN 2022
I would recommend you listen to a group called Libera, “Going home” suggest the church version because it has lyrics and extra verse. A musical performance set in a beautiful church or cathedral.
I kept thinking Doug was calling the band The Waylon Jennings 😂
I’m looking at Canada right now
I love the Waylin Jennys. I'm surprised I've never heard this. Also if you didn't know they apparently got their name from Waylon Jennings.

Doug, trying to find perfection in an imperfect world is the definition of insanity.
To quote a line from MASH, "We're all looking for a perfect fit in an off the rack world".
You should check out the Be Good Tanyas, they are another Canadian trio. Little Birds or Waitin’ Around to Die (Townes Van Zandt cover) are two of their best.
Great song I would really love to see you break down arch echo which is a great prog rock band
Manowar-Heart of steel (with orchestra or not)
If you’re reviewing music from female artists for women’s week, then you MUST react to the legendary Kate Bush! I recommend a long-player reaction to side B of her album Hounds of Love. We ALMOST programmed the Ninth Wave Suite...soon!
Seconded! Although regular length songs like “Night of the Swallow,” or “Love and Anger” would also be welcome.
Jane Siberry was hosting a show once and, in introducing Leon Redbone, forgot his name. He had to remind her....
She sounds pretty good on look long'' actually, much better than on One Fine Day
Doug, check this... Tommy Johansson´s "You Raise Me Up", one octave challange. Mind-blowing!
Please have a listen to Sarah Mclachlan's live version of Possession from Afterglow. Will stir your soul.
Nice version… But I truly love the Jane Siberry / KD Lang version. It’s seems more haunting and raw. I’m also a little bit bias being a Canadian! ;)
Can't beat Jane & KD, but it might help to know the Jennys are (mostly) Canadian too.

@@Jacob-er5xb Thanks for the Info! I didn't know that! Now I appreciate them even more! :)
Iris Dement?
Doug should react to 13 angels standing guard by Silver Mt Zion
Doug, do you want to crack the 200,000 subscriber level? One thing will do it... MORE MAIDEN!
Another is Peter Gabriel. I Grieve
Absolutely agree!
Please do a react to Jane Siberry Red High Heels. Thx
I would love to hear you just play your piano.
Seriously
just a bore/ Listen to Dead can dance - the carnival is over track or This mortal Coil - Tarantula instead
