Dude I almost bought this until I saw your review. NO ONE else is as honest and direct as you. They sugarcoated the damn thing. So thank you very much amigo!
This is offered at a fantastic price for the hardware. It looks like Anbernic really did their homework in dialing in a SoC selection that will be capable of running at full speed on just about everything you would want to emulate without thumbsticks (except Saturn :P ) at the lowest possible price. It is quite lacking on the software side though. I really hope they open it up to CFW developers so that the full potential of this system is unlocked. At under $60, it seems almost inevitable that this will develop more than enough of a following to warrant a CFW. I have high hopes for the future of this device. With the stock firmware, I don't think it stands any hope of dethroning the RG280v as my current favorite handheld, but a CFW could change that. At its price and with better software options, I really think this could become the default answer when someone asks what retro handheld they should start with.
Thank you for very fast review. Was going to buy it right away as I was waiting for the release, liked the no joystick and overall form factor (Miyoo mini is too small for me and RG353V has joysticks, and is litter bigger) but the software is huge letdown from what I saw and you said and main reason for me to wait little more.
I love the size and overall design, but not being able to play your games in the correct aspect ratio is a total deal breaker and I'd rather play on the smaller Miyoo Mini with the correct aspect ratio. If Anbernic fixes that issue, adds the option to play Game Boy games in green and black, and fixes the SNES clock speed and Genesis scrolling problems (which is admittedly quite a lot of problems) I'd definitely consider picking up an RG35XX though!
I have the same problem with the Dpad on every anbernic device. Fighting games are a no go because the diagonal only works on the right side, if you change sides you can't pull fireballs easily. I have that issue on the RG351V, 280V and 351p. I'm surprised it's the first time it's mentioned.
Ordered one of these yesterday. I love my Miyoo Mini, but unless I'm playing RPGs, I find it's button layout far too cramped for me. I had assumed custom FW or frontends were fairly standard these days, so didn't give that aspect any thought when I ordered it. Really hoping they open the source (as it should be, since it's Linux based).
This is so close to perfect for me. I have been liking the coverage I have seen on the Miyoo mini with Onion OS, but they are not easy to get and I am worried a touch at how small it is. If someone figures out how to get Onion on this I think I am going to have to pick one up.
I still prefer the Miyoo Mini due to its size. The 35XX might be more comfortable to hold but I'm only using the Miyoo Mini for brief gaming sessions anyway so I'm not too concerned with that. If I were using it for hours at a time I might prefer the 35XX, but at that point I would want to use a device with a larger screen.

@@nefireous2720 the RG280V is imo the best mini device. Adam is a great firmware, the screen is pretty nice, and it's much more sturdy than the Miyoo Mini and imo much more comfortable to hold.

Hopefully once a new firmware is developed, it'll be worth it, because the size/shape/aesthetics of the device are perfect for a ps1 and down handheld.
The background scrolling issue might be because of the screen. If it really has the same screen as the 353VS, it's refreshing at 124hz, which can cause problems with some emulators playing games at 60fps.
@@RobbieH yes, there is a patch for the 353 line that sets it to 60hz, but implementing it is a different story. It's a different chipset, so it may be tricky.

So many of these things get a 'NOPE' from me for such a minor issue.
This video inspired me to contact Anbernic about putting the Gameboy & NES games I’ve made on their systems. They’re fun and I think it would be a good addition
I would bash this product a lot more if I didn't think that it would probably be a lot better in some time, but I thought that with the rg353 devices anbernic learned to release products with acceptable firmware at launch. This and the rg505 are really a step back in that department.
This is budget, but it worked amazingly out of the box for me. The few games it didn’t have was easy to add. I did install another OS, but when back after finding the one that came with the console good enough and much simpler for someone who isn’t an adept (me)
Watched Anbernic's channel and showcase of this a while ago. PS1 looked choppy (as did their showcase of Metal Slug). Not in the market for this but will be interesting to see your impressions.
I actually just bought it since it was on sale 50usd. Love my miyoo mini v2 but I struggle with the size sometimes. So I hope this one fits a little better and I will gift my older miyoo. I only want it to play up to gba and some ps1, for the rest… I have my RP3+
I will buy this instead of miyoo mini. Bcoz Miyoo Mini is hard to buy in Thailand and price is high up to abt $130 while i can order rg35xx at $50 only.
Thanks for the review. I’m trying to find an easy to navigate device for my 7 year old. Something he can use to pop in and out of a stack of curated kid appropriate games. It seems like the miyu mini, with its fast toggle function was a good choice. Do you have any recommendations there? Having an intuitive firmware for selecting emulators and games is probably another huge purchase point. And price. Thanks! Great content as always.
That sidescrolling effect you were speaking of, where it seems like it's not scrolling all the way (14:20) is judder. It's common with non-integer scaling if a large step size is used, and it looks like that is the case if SNES is anything to go by. It can also get worse if the game is not running at a consistent speed, so for example, if it's skipping a frame every so often.
Unfortunately people really fall for any marketing trick... the fake two days discount really worked on the masses. 50$ for the handheld but 12 for the sd and 15$ for shipping not counting the possible import taxes once you get it > >
With regards to the gbc games that were black and white, were those the gbc games that can also be played on a gameboy dmg also? And the ones in color were color exclusives?
Someone dropped the ball a little by having this launch on a date that even if you ordered day one, it would arrive just a few days after Christmas....
I should have my first device (Miyoo Mini) waiting for me on my porch if I ever make it home! But I think I like the look of the size of this device! Will find out once I can get my hands on the Miyoo!
This is the device i got most hyped about because it look just like a GBC and i only play gameboy games with no real use for the analogs, but this atrocious firmware is a no-go for me, i really hope that the community can do something about it.
I have the mini, love the pocketable experience, this one is compact too. I really hope they will update the firmware with something more customisable per emulator (resolution / color schemes). Is it possible to quickly update or swap the roms on the included SD ? (to add Mario for example). Thanks again for this thorough first review !
Don't quite see what is the use case for this device, don't see what is the reason for the microhdmi Port if there's no wireless controller support, Anbernic is struggling to jump in on every bandwagon available.
if the Miyoo Mini feels too small, this is a good device. too bad about the OS though. hopefully the community will make a better OS for it. Otherwise, I love my Miyoo Mini so I don't need this.
Personally I think the RG353VS is a much better option, even though it's more expensive. I wish this device would be actually a "RG283V" in order to compete with the Miyoo mini. Same form factor, but smaller and more powerful. I know it would be more expensive, but worth it IMO.
I really hate the joysticks on these vertical consoles, I even looked for some 3r party case, or mode to remove them, but no luck. Otherwise the RG353V or VS are nice devices. It's really very subjective what is better I personally like the form factor of this just the software is huge letdown.
So, in a nutshell, it's a Anbernic version of the Miyoo Mini with a nice 3.5" display, just not as refined. Even the basic OS looks almost the same. Now we just need Onion for it, and being sold around $60, is what they Mini sells for, if you can find it. If they make a ton of them, the mini will go away, as if you want a Mini, you're paying over $100, or praying you can get from the official store.
Can't say I'm a fan of transparent plastic, but for the price and the fact it runs linux, seemed decent to me until you mentioned no chd support, thats a dealbreaker
That Chinese translation comment reminded me of a Chinese school friend of mine (born here in England) who used to say "open the light" for switching on a light switch haha... "Turn On" and "Open" must be the same word in Chinese or something.
I think I'll stick to the RG280V and Miyoo Mini for my small handhelds... Even OOTB those handhelds didn't have the issues this one has... Still waiting for Anbernic to release an RG280V successor btw.

I was so hopeful for this one
this device makes both the 353v and miyoo mini look more appealing than having this one.
I think I'll just wait for the Miyoo Mini Plus to come out in the original gray color scheme.
This form factor with the power of the 353 devices, wifi and decent custom firmware would be the perfect device for me.
just checked their website again, 2 colours are already out of stock, this thing seems to sell like crazy
Unfortunately people really fall for any marketing trick... the fake two days discount really worked on the masses.
50$ for the handheld but 12 for the sd and 15$ for shipping not counting the possible import taxes once you get it

Just ordered mine. I am sold on it. Just need it to play anything below Saturn to play great. That's it. The Steam Deck will be for anything last that
With regards to the gbc games that were black and white, were those the gbc games that can also be played on a gameboy dmg also? And the ones in color were color exclusives?
Tempted to buy this one. Curious to see what software updates pop up in the future.
Almost everything you mentioned as downsides on the software side has been fixed with GarlicOS
Ooh nearly right on the dot for 20 minutes nicely done :D
Looks interesting, but not enough to replace my rg351v
Gonna get this one
Woof. That will teach me not to pre-order this kinda stuff right off the bat. Hopefully custom firmware will fix these issues.
The 353VS costs twice as much or more than the 35xx here in Brazil.
Awesome!
I hope to one day see a vertical handled ALA 351v but smaller with GameCube / ps2 / wii emulation. I would be done searching
Golden Sun... You must be a man of fine tastes.
Thank you russ!!!
Despite the critsicms, this still seems pretty good to me. I think I might get it
That Chinese translation comment reminded me of a Chinese school friend of mine (born here in England) who used to say "open the light" for switching on a light switch haha... "Turn On" and "Open" must be the same word in Chinese or something.
Thanks for the video.
I think I'll stick to the RG280V and Miyoo Mini for my small handhelds... Even OOTB those handhelds didn't have the issues this one has... Still waiting for Anbernic to release an RG280V successor btw.
I've been waiting for this video
Thanks for the video! As of nearly being in 2023, I don't understand why they don't put a little wifi chip in there. As a kind of retroachievements hunter, this is a must for these kind of devices.
The question is, do you think they will update the software/firmware? Or someone will build custom software for it?
wish for a 4 inch 3:2 version non-joystick
