I love musicians (I'm one myself) talking about their creative process. He's one of the great songwriters of his generation. That's why I liked the Beatles documentary, too.
HAHAHAHA, I just came from "Honesty"!! Hadn't heard that song, in a long, long, time. This HS clip showcases probably my 2 favorite BJ songs. Well, except for the new one, now.
John Lennon originally wrote "Whatever gets you thru the night" to the tune or groove of the song "Rock Your Baby" by George McCrea. You can listen to one of the studio takes on his Anthology cd box set.
True story. Harry Wayne "K.C." Casey of K.C. and the Sunshine Band co-wrote "Rock Your Baby." He tells he story of the song's connection with Lennon while introducing the song in their shows.
I would pay big money to sit down and have a beer with his drummer Liberty. I'd be tempted to start by going "wtf kind of name is 'Liberty' anyway?" Then he'd punch me, I'd fall down, I'd get back up, and we'd laugh and have another beer. Maybe.
His questions are just meant to guide the guest to follow the script (written on Stern's sheets) 1:1. It makes the interview unnatural because we are aware of Stern already knowing exactly what the guest would say. A better interviewer would make it sound more natural and would seem curious and interested in a more honest way.
I think I prefer to not see how the sausage is made... I wanted to think of Honesty as a grief-induced, philosophical song that had to be written, as opposed to rhyming with s0domy
Grat story. But my problem with Stern is that the stories his interviewer tells him are already written on his sheets and he makes sure his guest tells the story exactly the same to match his notes. If the guest changes or forgets any detail, Stern would ask him some guiding questions to guide the guest to follow the script. The only problem with this is that we are aware of Stern already knowing what the guest would say, and it just makes the interview forced and unnatural.
Billy needs to do an interview with Rick Beato.
Absolutely!
That would be completely epic!
YESSS
Omg YES
Now that would be stellar.
Joel was a fantastic guest - totally open and shared some really great insights.
pissed my pants at "Shithead, that's laughter in the rain..."
So you’re saying you have a low threshold for laughter?
So interesting to see how the seed of a song sprouts into a beautiful flower of genius when it's in the hands of a master.
Well said!❤

Billy Joel is a genius.
Hard worker...
Wish Howard would release whole episodes of interviews this good instread of these snippets..Love ya Howard since the '80's...
Gotta pay for SiriusXM 😊
Thank you Howard for coxing out a Master's class on songwriting! By Billy Joel no less!
I think Howard needs more logos in his studio.
This! 😂
HAHAHAHA, I just came from "Honesty"!!
Hadn't heard that song, in a long, long, time. This HS clip showcases probably my 2 favorite BJ songs. Well, except for the new one, now.
Amazing
2:42 It had to be "Honesty".
Elton John and Bernie Taupin had already used "Harmony" on Goodbye Yellow Brick Road.
I always saw the similarities

Ready for his March 28 100th residency show 🔥🔥🔥

Bring back Liberty
Liberty is my drumming Spirit Guide!🙌🏽🙌🏽🙌🏽
🎶Liberty is such a lonely name🎶
Do a search for Liberty talks about Billy Joel. He was not happy about the way BJ kicked him out of the band.
Read his book, it's great
0:18 also... "Waterloo Sunset"
We already heard this story many times.... And so did Howard...
I didn't hear it.
Howard has the stories already written on his sheets, he just makes sure his guest follows the script, which sounds unnatural many times.
@@LB14745 I know. You made my point.
Yes he does
Movin Out story we've heard a million times
Come on Howard
Bahahaha. Honesty and the Long Island band member...so funny
And to me Honesty is his best song
❤
Wish I lived in an alternate universe where “Sodomy” is considered one of the classic love songs.
Stern can’t STFU and let the interview flow naturally.
Stern was OK. He interjected and asked questions that many viewers would want answers to, but let Billy speak at length.

"Yesterday" was famously first named "Scrambled Eggs" bc McCartney couldnt think of a good title

😂 I think McCartney said "Yesterday " started out as "Scrambled Eggs."
@@appletree6898 Sussudio was named after the sound of the melody on the keyboard... lol
@@AnthonyL0401 With a little'1999' thrown in.
Musicians read this headline differently.
I fully believe the last verse of Honesty where he sings "When I'm deep inside of me......" exists solely to subtly get the word "sodomy" in there.
I don’t think it’s laughter in the rain

"Honesty's one of the most complex songs on the planet..." Sure, Howard. It's actually _the reverse_ ."
It’s not just 4 chords… Even Billy had to think about as he was going through it. lol.
Howard talks too much in his interviews.
It is his show.
On radio it works.
Thats how a radio interview works. They are having a conversation
Not really.
No he doesnt? Do your own show then
Stern is full of himself, Billy needs new stories we haven’t heard 20 times
I guess that’s the case if you listen to Joel interviews a lot, but this is all new to me.
@@trashyraccoon2615Ditto.
All I hear is Penny Lane….
🤣🤣🤣
😂
Why were Billy and his band mates singing about sodomy?
Well, damn, THAT should have been the title of the UA-cam clip! Imagine the clicks.
F stern
Very intelligent.
