The mass media committed to this concept all the way back in the 1990s. Back then they actually reported on crimes accurately and regularly. St Louis has a higher per capita because the county and the city are considered different entities. Only a couple other cities are like this. St Louis City only has about 300,000 people. The county is where the majority of people live.

I used to feel a lot worse for people in these neighborhoods. The combination of doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result and the browbeating and insults I get when I try to talk about it with people have eroded my compassion considerably. It still bothers me, but not as much as it used to I just shrug, and move on with my day, resolve to avoid large cities as much as I can.
