What Babangida did in 1985 through the Vatsa Coup was to send a message to fellow coupists in the army. The message was simply that he had no loyalty nor allegiance to friendship. It is straight out of a Machiavellian script. That was probably the reason there was no coup again till 1990. When you are a dictator, you govern by ruthlessness.

Mamman Vasta's was a wasted talent. He wrote a book on qualitative and quantitative chemistry that helped me to understand chemistry in a very easy way. I remember one of his poems:
    Girls are sweet
    Girls are shy
    Do not beat
    Or they'll cry.
The poem, though written in a simple way, was meant to change our culture of violence against women in our societies. What a life to waste by a trusted friend or should I say frenemy?

I know it’s quite clear but I have to emphasize the ridiculousness.
    1. Members of a regime that came to power through a coup, made a law that sentenced future coup plotters to death.
    2. Two coups later, a new regime re-enacts that same law to take out coup plotters against them.
    The irony!

Thanks for the information on the Vatsa coup attempt. I just learned from the video/information that it's a mistake for a military officer to work closely with classmates in power, like it or not they will end up as victims of cynicism. Once your classmates assume power better resign. In social life try to avoid partnership with close friends and relatives rather engage with alien persons.

Mr Ibradiego Badamando Maradongida merely saw him as a potential [future] threat. Not that Vasta really had interest in the rogue so-called "presidency", but the "military president" felt instinctively threatened that the "military brats" might decide to get rid of him [safely] in favour of his cerebral friend in order to assuage Nigeria's increasingly sophisticated populace that was getting tired of tinhorn despotism. I am not holding briefs for IBB, but I think his hands were tied. I agree they had this unhealthy rivalry as friends, but Mamman Vasta was "punished" for his role in the court marshalling of Dimka. (He was the secretary of the Obada panel). He had stepped on the toes of a class of powerful middle beltan officers who could topple IBB if he tried to save his friend's neck.

I believe the little time Babangida has in this world is to keep asking God for Mercy everyday for all his sins he has committed... It broke my heart to know that he was actually Vatsa's best man. If it was me I don't think I'll have the mind to face Vatsa's wife.... The truth is there is this unhealthy rivalry between Vasta and IBB. Rumours in the barracks then was that Vasta's wife once scolded her husband for 'doing everything IBB does' and this never sat well with IBB that was one of the reasons Vasta never commanded a troop under IBB. The impact of the alleged coup also affected the airforce as funding was almost cut off even for aviation fuel. Nice work pls keep it up

Why did Vatsa attempt to escape House Arrest ? If he knew he was innocent, he should have stayed put without attempting to escape. This move of his made him appear as a suspect. After this move of his, it was always going to be difficult for him to prove he had nothing to do with the planned coupe against Babangida.

Vasta was a seasoned officer with an indepth understanding of military antics and internal plots, bureaucracy and complications. He also knew how venomous, unforgiving, unstable and domineering Babangida could be. He attempted to escape, if that narrative was true, to save his life. We must remember that Vasta had explored every avenue and resource to make Babangida see reasons with him but all to no avail. At the point, knowing his friend, his last resort would be self-preservation. In my honest opinion, I don't think Vasta ever attempted any escape through the window. All the allegations against Vasta were maliciously concocted, the evidences were weak and circumstantial and the trial was unfair and unjust. The whole process had some personal vendetta and malice undertone to it. Babangida was afraid of losing power hence he implicated those he presumed as threats. Imagine how the elite military officers were wasted in Egbin's crash. As he was dubbed, 'Maradona,' Babangida was the master of deception, manipulation, mischief, corruption, and betrayal. He was implicated in the death of Dele Giwa, the NewsWatch editor that wanted to report his findings on Gloria Okon that Babangida administration claimed was executed. Some people even believe that Vasta was never among the executed officers.

People don't understand how the military works, babangida was head of state, but he had supreme military council to answer to. He also had powerful people like abacha, and others to answer to. Abacha was more ruthless than babangida. Look running a cartel like nigeria is not easy.

The so-called Armed Forces Redemption Council (AFRC), not the earlier Supreme Military Council [which had a modicum of democracy] as you erroneously called it, was merely a rubber-stamp for Mr Ibradiego Badamando Maradongida. The powers you ascribed to the likes of inSane(nni) Lootobacha GSARS (Grand Sanctioned Armed Robber of the State) came much later. [See him sitting like a babyish general among the other members of the junta!]
Maradongida had all the wherewithal to set the innocent man free, but for his innate jealousy and envy of Vasta on account of his achievements apart from the khaki uniform! 'nuff said.

You need to understand what treason is. An attempt is equal to the complete act. On d issue of the officers not having troops, the plot was to use air assets including gunships to clubber strategic installations and take over d government, limiting involvement of ground troops. Col Iyorshe and Col Oche were outspoken officers who fearlessly admitted their roles in d plot, and they both testified that Col Bitiyong reached Vatsa and that Vatsa promised 50k out of which he provided 10k, that 10k was distributed among d officers for logistics in the planning. What else are you looking for? Babangida tried to shield Vatsa but was warned of sad consequences in d circumstance. Military law is strict, and Vatsa knew d consequences. Receipting the 10k was a gimmick by an intelligent poet, but that could not displace d strong evidence of complicity against the General.

I do not NECESSARILY BLAME IBB, but POLITICS. There was a coup! History shows trusted friends can undo each other. E.g, the case of Thomas Sankara.
Asuming Vatsa was truly innocent. Then, someone or some group wanted Vatsa out. IBB couldn't do shit. Otherwise, he'd be next.
Since the incident of Ironsi and Nzeogwu. Military officers' fingered in coup are seriously and swiftly dealt with. Perhaps the coup plotters thought they could get away by fingerings Vatsa, a close friend to IBB. But IBB's survival was also at play. At that point, remnant of Buhari's 'friends' (Kaduna Mafia) were bent on pruning out IBB's trustees and vice versa. Hence, Buhari was still kept on house arrest. Even in the military regime, highway politics were going on. Kill or be killed. Any favoritism/ sentiments were perceived as weakness.
Anyone can say anything after the fact. In hindsight, Ironsi & Fajuyi shouldn't have been killed either 😢. Another HASTY decision during the military erar.
