The part about being direct as well as not over dramatic is so true. Being Arab we have a similar culture to Latin people (the hot temper, the burning passion, etc) but what I notice in certain European counties (especially Germany) the people are so dare I say calm? Sometimes I miss the hot fiery passion and drama that comes from being Arab with a German partner. But other times it's a breath of fresh air how calm mature and nonchalant they are about things. Another thing I'd say about Germans is that whilst they're not overly emotional, the times they are it really does leave an impact on you.
I think it's so great to have contact with cultures that are very different for ours. We can have access on how people can be and understand how our culture influences our ways of thinking, our emotions and relationships in a more easy and clear way. It's such a wonderful way of self growing.
Absolutely love the directness and honesty of Germans. Heard lots of people from around the world complain about it, but I like the idea "I've given you my word, I'm gonna keep my word".
It can unfortunately backfire. I asked illegal immigrants from Mexico why they didn't just come to America legally, like my German family and their response was to murder my family.
I'll tell you what's truly German in this conversation. Paraphrasing: "Everyone in Germany has Haftpflchtversicherung" "I wouldn't say everyone, I'ld say 81%" That's so German, for three reasons. First, you certainly wouldn't want to imply that everyone does something, even if it's "the vast majority". Second, you wouldn't just say "the vast majority" if you could be more specific, so you give an actual ballpark figure. And third, that ballpark figure will be within a few percent of the generally accepted figure (in this case 80%-85%). Fun video, by the way. Liked and subscribed.

Hello! Jen and Yvonne, it was a lot of fun and quite entertaining to watch this video. I agree with several points about dating a German, I personally have been in a 4-year relationship with a German. I'm Mexican. What I have noticed is that they are undoubtedly very direct (to the extent that they seem insensitive) and take a long time to express their feelings, although when there is the trust they do so without a problem. The thing about planning ahead, I have had that experience, although my boyfriend does change his plans a lot, even if he plans ahead. I would also add that the Germans have a hard time adapting or giving in to something they are not used to, they are a little more stubborn. Additionally, I would say that they live a lot in the future and enjoy less the present. As a Mexican, I consider myself the same, direct, non-dramatic, and I plan ahead, but I am more creative in terms of planning. I am not so strict on free time type events, even if I plan ahead, like birthdays or vacations or etc., I think there's no need to stress so much about it. And I adapt more easily to situations that I am not used to than my German boyfriend.
Trusting your partner and giving her/him freedom to maintain their friendships and hobbies is an absolute necessity in our German culture. Just like Yvonne said, this lack freedom equals imprisonment and has no potential for a healthy monogamous relationship. Though some German ladies have been trying hard to isolate me (a GerMan) from my female long term friends and though I explained it to them and gave them several warnings, it always was the main reason for ending the relationship with them. If they had made bad experiences with unfaithful men, that is not my problem and it also shows they never trusted me or even understood me. I also invited them to join us and most of the time they didn't want that either?! So it wasn't always trust, it was just needy selfishness? I am surprised in other cultures people can have a healthy relationship under those circumstances?! And yes, I guess most of us Germans are not much into drama, we keep calm and are straight shooters and if we don't feel being understood and clarifications don't seem to work, we distance ourselves without making a big deal of it unless it is more than a new friendship that may go down the pipe. In a relationship I guess we (at least me) are also very emotional deep inside if it has serious problems, we try to keep our shit together and stay rational as long as possible because once it gets really emotional it can get very counterproductive to find ever a solution or even discuss the root cause. I am from a very harmonic family and if I meet potential partners and see they need drama on a regular basis, I just stay away from them. The ironic thing is that this sometimes triggered their hunting mechanism and even when your logical mind says NO and they are really super hot, it isn't always so easy to say no and you give it a try, even when it has no future to start with. Also when in an open discussion with friends and you have a different opinion than your partner, is for some partner almost unacceptable, though it has nothing to do how deeply you love and support them. I find this very immature if a partner thinks you always have to support their opinion. So in Germany it doesn't mean anything if your mature partner may have a different opinion, this is not a loss of love, this is the respect that everyone can have their opinions unless these are essential/philosophical life and relationship determining subjects. Anyway I am very impressed that you, with a very different dynamic, are such a great and beautiful couple that is just joyful to watch, listen, learn and laugh. In the different corners of the world different meanings for Love and Relationship is perceived and lived for. Can't blame for who we are and why we expect since that's how ppl shaped since their childhood. What I(point of view of a Sri Lankan according to my personal experience) understood so far is that German(may be also European) relationships(love/romantic) are more of the nature of Collaborations rather Partnerships which have their own pros and cons. Germans(European) are more inclined towards their individual goals where Non Germans(Non Europeans) more likely to see a common goal being reached(that both the parties have agreed and worked upon) but definitely the pros and cons are again determined and understood according to the cultures of each party in the relationship. But my lesson-learned is that Love is defined individually and perceived individually so can't blame your significant other for not being able to READ YOUR MIND :D regardless they are of your culture or another ;)
The thing with planning in advance is probably because most Germans like to be in control of their life and in general like the predictable. It also heavily corresponds to the age and phase of his or her life the German is in. In your 20s while studying or early years of the job people still like to experiment a lot and dont have as much responsibility but with age and a more stable form of life often comes a long time relationship, living alone or with the SO or even kids so the times you can be spontaneous dwindle so the predictable gets more attractive. Obviously I cant speak for all Germans but that is something I saw happening in myself and many others around me.

Very interesting to see, and I can relate a little bit as I am dating a Latino from Mexico, but I am from the US, so it's not as drastic of a difference but some of them are still there! The insurance thing is so hilarious. Just a few weeks ago my boyfriend moved into his new apartment and he was telling me about this insurance he was getting. I'm pretty sure it's the one you were talking about in this video and when I heard the things it covers I was so confused why it covered so many things. XD I assumed you only really needed to get car and rental/home owners insurance and that'd be it. But the amount of stuff it covered was hilarious to me. And the price too was surprising, only 10 EUR a month, very affordable.

And being honest is something that leads to a successful, trustful relationship and for a German a word is a word, a promise is a serious thing and you should keep that promise. It's better we believe in our kids and trust them, instead to be afraid and they probably do something nobody wants. Fresh air is the best, i can only sleep with an open window. The part that it is rather normal for teenagers to bring their gf or bf (or sometimes just friends) home to sleep over is so true. Like said most German parents are ok with hosting their kids' significant ones, I have also seen teenagers bringing their bf or gf to the family gathering. I think most of parents in germany accepting it is natural for teenagers to explore "mysterious" love and/or sex, so they prefer to provide them with a safer place to hangout and try "new things". As someone originated from Asia this is mind blowing and so cool.

Shock 3: They will "do it" anyway, but you as the parents don't know the boyfriends/girlfriends of your teenager daughter/son. So from an utilitarian and logical perspective, it just makes more sense. Old German saying "keep your friends close, but your enemies closer". The same principles apply in this case.

As someone with OCD i'm all about planning and making plans in advance, but at the same time sometimes I can make a plan on Tuesday for Friday and come Friday I don't want to do it.
My partner is German/Itallian and that has been a lot to get used to. LOL - The directness was a very hard thing for me to get used to, still is some days. He has lived here in the states for quite a few years though so he has been somewhat "Americanized" but he's still very much German. - I'm getting ready to go to Germany with him in a few months to visit the country and see how I like it. So I will get a better chance to see it in person in others when I am there.
I've had the same conversation to the open window in winter. I have to say, I used to sleep with it usually closed (particularly when it's cold) but open it up in the morning to let some air in I've gotten used to it and enjoy the fresh air but when it's -10 to -15 I hate it. The scarf thing is funny to me, I've not seen it anywhere else but have noticed if people have a sniffle, they often wear a scarf...the part that I find kinda funny is that they could be wearing it indoors and with a t-shirt. I feel it's maybe an old wives tale that people do...there are many different sorts in different countries...love finding them out.
The man I sleep with is quite anal about various things. He sleeps with windows open and allows very could drafts to come in which in reality could cause worse problems than a perceived lack of fresh air or oxygen. I have lived all my life with doors and windows shut and have never noticed the stale air during the night. The main reason why I don't like the windows open is that after he opens the widows at night, I invariably see one or more big black cochroaches from the trees outside, crawling around the walls. If a person really felt they need more oxygen, like my partner does, they could open the door, which my partner also does. I think having big cochroaches crawling on your bed and cold winter breezes making you cold, should cancel out a person's insistence on having windows open.

I've had on and off interest in moving to Germany. And this whole video (plus their entire channel) is a very strong advertisement for me. How interesting, as an Asian I think Latinos are more open/outgoing and passionate, so it's more natural for couples to stay in the same room at their parents' house or be naked in front of other people (from the sauna film you mentioned), whereas Germans are supposed to be more "cold" and conservative.
As a Latino that has been living in Hamburg for 4 years with my wife I gotta say... I love Germans, I mean yes, they may not be perceived as "warm" as we're used to, but they are super nice and yeah they may not always smile but that doesn't signify they're being mean, they're just being genuine! I like that directness and emotional independence, it has shone light into some of the many flaws that we have as Latin@s.

Yeah so funny, in our family we are also 100% straight forward and I have awkward problems now with my 2 year old son because I don't want him to listen so "lie" songs like "who took the cookies from the cookie jar". I get so offended by lieing and my husband - also german is way more relaxed. In his family they are also straight up with confrontation like "life tips" but us kids are supposed to say "yes thank you for your advice" and just don't follow it while in my family we would have an argument about it until its clarified. But all of us would say "No we won't visit because our schedule is full already" even when we are in town. 😂

As an American (US) I relate so much with the Guatemalan lady! And I think most of us do. I guess it’s just a North American thing but I guess Guatemala is considered Central America but my point still stands! In New Zealand we probably wouldn't say yes. But we would sound positive and indicate we would be keen or interested. But that is very much in advance so we wouldn't expect them to need to know so soon. We wouldn't expect to say yes that far in advance, unless it was family or very close friends. And God, if you word is of total importance, we wouldn't commit.
I believe that what you describe as directness, is just honesty. Even white lies aren't usually seen as a nice thing or a polite thing. Directness is simply asking what you want to know rather than dance around the subject, and that is really something that's pervasive in Germany and the Netherlands.
And it is easier with honesty. You don't have to remember all the lies so that you can stick with them. Or the lies will get you after some time if they are discovered. Sometimes I also don't follow the reality in total 🙂, but I try to be as near as possible if necessary.

The thing about insurances is that any other person will expect you to have a insurance, so they will use it. In a car accident you can technically make a deal with the other party straight away. But when everyone has insurance, they will just use that.
That last example resonates we me a lot. My birthday is in June, and if I don't invite people in March (the latest), everyone will be on holiday at some point, so that a bigger party will be impossible. Thankfully, we're all German, so no one's surprised when I plan it in advance XD
When I turn back to my sleeping room after the shower in the morning I think: It doesn't smell good. But it's warm, that rules! 😂 Im a German, but I was born in Nepal. Maybe that's the reason. Or how my Austrian mother said: "Erstunken ist noch keiner. Erfroren schon viele". 😂😂😂
She was correct in saying Spanish and making the distinction because people from Spain are Spanish NOT Latinos. Latinos SPEAK Spanish this makes them Hispanic and NOT Spanish. They are Latinos because they are from Latin America and not Europe. Hope that helps.

If you don´t speak the language of your partner-parents the partner can translate. Even if the partner don´t "speak" with word-language , just with body-language.
I only close the Window when there is Bad smell or it really is too cold and when tempratures are abround 2°C i use a scarf so my neck does not get stiff cause i hate to pull the blanket over my face but yes the scarf is to not hurt your muscles not to keep the troat warm in generell and if it is beloe minus 2°C i usually keep it closed i sleep not as well as if it was open but i also dont get sick but i open it half an hour before going to sleep if that is the case sleeping in warm air is unhealthy anyway

Im from the balkans and I so agree. especiallay about the independecy, I personally believe that on hand its so good for the individual but on the other hand I've seen people cheating that way much more than someone would who isnt "allowed" to cross some lines and whos not that independant,, more clingy instead and so on. I believe that way it s also easier to get seperated from someone.

I agree with several points about dating a German, I personally have been in a 4-year relationship with a German. I'm Mexican. What I have noticed is that they are undoubtedly very direct (to the extent that they seem insensitive) and take a long time to express their feelings, although when there is the trust they do so without a problem. The thing about planning ahead, I have had that experience, although my boyfriend does change his plans a lot, even if he plans ahead. I would also add that the Germans have a hard time adapting or giving in to something they are not used to, they are a little more stubborn. Additionally, I would say that they live a lot in the future and enjoy less the present. As a Mexican, I consider myself the same, direct, non-dramatic, and I plan ahead, but I am more creative in terms of planning. I am not so strict on free time type events, even if I plan ahead, like birthdays or vacations or etc., I think there's no need to stress so much about it. And I adapt more easily to situations that I am not used to than my German boyfriend.

Trusting your partner and giving her/him freedom to maintain their friendships and hobbies is an absolute necessity in our German culture. Just like Yvonne said, this lack freedom equals imprisonment and has no potential for a healthy monogamous relationship.
Though some German ladies have been trying hard to isolate me (a GerMan) from my female long term friends and though I explained it to them and gave them several warnings, it always was the main reason for ending the relationship with them. If they had made bad experiences with unfaithful men, that is not my problem and it also shows they never trusted me or even understood me. I also invited them to join us and most of the time they didn't want that either?! So it wasn't always trust, it was just needy selfishness?
I am surprised in other cultures people can have a healthy relationship under those circumstances?!
And yes, I guess most of us Germans are not much into drama, we keep calm and are straight shooters and if we don't feel being understood and clarifications don't seem to work, we distance ourselves without making a big deal of it unless it is more than a new friendship that may go down the pipe. In a relationship I guess we (at least me) are also very emotional deep inside if it has serious problems, we try to keep our shit together and stay rational as long as possible because once it gets really emotional it can get very counterproductive to find ever a solution or even discuss the root cause. I am from a very harmonic family and if I meet potential partners and see they need drama on a regular basis, I just stay away from them. The ironic thing is that this sometimes triggered their hunting mechanism and even when your logical mind says NO and they are really super hot, it isn't always so easy to say no and you give it a try, even when it has no future to start with.
Also when in an open discussion with friends and you have a different opinion than your partner, is for some partner almost unacceptable, though it has nothing to do how deeply you love and support them. I find this very immature if a partner thinks you always have to support their opinion. So in Germany it doesn't mean anything if your mature partner may have a different opinion, this is not a loss of love, this is the respect that everyone can have their opinions unless these are essential/philosophical life and relationship determining subjects.
Anyway I am very impressed that you, with a very different dynamic, are such a great and beautiful couple that is just joyful to watch, listen, learn and laugh.

In the different corners of the world different meanings for Love and Relationship is perceived and lived for. Can't blame for who we are and why we expect since that's how ppl shaped since their childhood. What I(point of view of a Sri Lankan according to my personal experience) understood so far is that German(may be also European) relationships(love/romantic) are more of the nature of Collaborations rather Partnerships which have their own pros and cons. Germans(European) are more inclined towards their individual goals where Non Germans(Non Europeans) more likely to see a common goal being reached(that both the parties have agreed and worked upon) but definitely the pros and cons are again determined and understood according to the cultures of each party in the relationship. But my lesson-learned is that Love is defined individually and perceived individually so can't blame your significant other for not being able to READ YOUR MIND :D regardless they are of your culture or another ;)

The thing with planning in advance is probably because most Germans like to be in control of their life and in general like the predictable. It also heavily corresponds to the age and phase of his or her life the German is in. In your 20s while studying or early years of the job people still like to experiment a lot and dont have as much responsibility but with age and a more stable form of life often comes a long time relationship, living alone or with the SO or even kids so the times you can be spontaneous dwindle so the predictable gets more attractive.
Obviously I cant speak for all Germans but that is something I saw happening in myself and many others around me.

The insurance thing is so hilarious. Just a few weeks ago my boyfriend moved into his new apartment and he was telling me about this insurance he was getting. I'm pretty sure it's the one you were talking about in this video and when I heard the things it covers I was so confused why it covered so many things. XD I assumed you only really needed to get car and rental/home owners insurance and that'd be it. But the amount of stuff it covered was hilarious to me. And the price too was surprising, only 10 EUR a month, very affordable.

My partner is my partner, not my slave, to have a trustful relationship everyone should be allowed to do what he/she likes to do and if my partner likes to do something on her/his own it's okay for me.
And being honest is something that leads to a successful, trustful relationship and for a German a word is a word, a promise is a serious thing and you should keep that promise.
It's better we believe in our kids and trust them, instead to be afraid and they probably do something nobody wants.

The part that it is rather normal for teenagers to bring their gf or bf (or sometimes just friends) home to sleep over is so true. Like said most German parents are ok with hosting their kids' significant ones, I have also seen teenagers bringing their bf or gf to the family gathering. I think most of parents in germany accepting it is natural for teenagers to explore "mysterious" love and/or sex, so they prefer to provide them with a safer place to hangout and try "new things". As someone originated from Asia this is mind blowing and so cool.

Shock 3: They will "do it" anyway, but you as the parents don't know the boyfriends/girlfriends of your teenager daughter/son. So from an utilitarian and logical perspective, it just makes more sense. Old German saying "keep your friends close, but your enemies closer". The same principles apply in this case.

As someone with OCD i'm all about planning and making plans in advance, but at the same time sometimes I can make a plan on Tuesday for Friday and come Friday I don't want to do it.
My partner is German/Itallian and that has been a lot to get used to. LOL - The directness was a very hard thing for me to get used to, still is some days. He has lived here in the states for quite a few years though so he has been somewhat "Americanized" but he's still very much German. - I'm getting ready to go to Germany with him in a few months to visit the country and see how I like it. So I will get a better chance to see it in person in others when I am there.
I've had the same conversation to the open window in winter. I have to say, I used to sleep with it usually closed (particularly when it's cold) but open it up in the morning to let some air in I've gotten used to it and enjoy the fresh air but when it's -10 to -15 I hate it. The scarf thing is funny to me, I've not seen it anywhere else but have noticed if people have a sniffle, they often wear a scarf...the part that I find kinda funny is that they could be wearing it indoors and with a t-shirt. I feel it's maybe an old wives tale that people do...there are many different sorts in different countries...love finding them out.
The man I sleep with is quite anal about various things. He sleeps with windows open and allows very could drafts to come in which in reality could cause worse problems than a perceived lack of fresh air or oxygen.
I have lived all my life with doors and windows shut and have never noticed the stale air during the night.
The main reason why I don't like the windows open is that after he opens the widows at night, I invariably see one or more big black cochroaches from the trees outside, crawling around the walls.
If a person really felt they need more oxygen, like my partner does, they could open the door, which my partner also does.
I think having big cochroaches crawling on your bed and cold winter breezes making you cold, should cancel out a person's insistence on having windows open.

I've had on and off interest in moving to Germany. And this whole video (plus their entire channel) is a very strong advertisement for me. Most of the 'German' traits in this video are seen as spectrum disorder behaviours in my culture. Nothing wrong with that, just makes Germany feel like a place that would work well with my brain😂

How interesting, as an Asian I think Latinos are more open/outgoing and passionate, so it's more natural for couples to stay in the same room at their parents' house or be naked in front of other people (from the sauna film you mentioned), whereas Germans are supposed to be more "cold" and conservative.
As a Latino that has been living in Hamburg for 4 years with my wife I gotta say... I love Germans, I mean yes, they may not be perceived as "warm" as we're used to, but they are super nice and yeah they may not always smile but that doesn't signify they're being mean, they're just being genuine!
I like that directness and emotional independence, it has shone light into some of the many flaws that we have as Latin@s.

Yeah so funny, in our family we are also 100% straight forward and I have awkward problems now with my 2 year old son because I don't want him to listen so "lie" songs like "who took the cookies from the cookie jar". I get so offended by lieing and my husband - also german is way more relaxed. In his family they are also straight up with confrontation like "life tips" but us kids are supposed to say "yes thank you for your advice" and just don't follow it while in my family we would have an argument about it until its clarified. But all of us would say "No we won't visit because our schedule is full already" even when we are in town. 😂

in Rio (BR) we also say yes to everything, and complete with: "let´s organize it!"
In New Zealand we probably wouldn't say yes. But we would sound positive and indicate we would be keen or interested. But that is very much in advance so we wouldn't expect them to need to know so soon. We wouldn't expect to say yes that far in advance, unless it was family or very close friends. And God, if you word is of total importance, we wouldn't commit.
I believe that what you describe as directness, is just honesty. Even white lies aren't usually seen as a nice thing or a polite thing.
Directness is simply asking what you want to know rather than dance around the subject, and that is really something that's pervasive in Germany and the Netherlands.
And it is easier with honesty. You don't have to remember all the lies so that you can stick with them. Or the lies will get you after some time if they are discovered. Sometimes I also don't follow the reality in total 🙂, but I try to be as near as possible if necessary.

The thing about insurances is that any other person will expect you to have a insurance, so they will use it.
In a car accident you can technically make a deal with the other party straight away. But when everyone has insurance, they will just use that.

That last example resonates we me a lot. My birthday is in June, and if I don't invite people in March (the latest), everyone will be on holiday at some point, so that a bigger party will be impossible. Thankfully, we're all German, so no one's surprised when I plan it in advance XD

She was correct in saying Spanish and making the distinction because people from Spain are Spanish NOT Latinos. Latinos SPEAK Spanish this makes them Hispanic and NOT Spanish. They are Latinos because they are from Latin America and not Europe. Hope that helps.

I only close the Window when there is Bad smell or it really is too cold
and when tempratures are abround 2°C i use a scarf so my neck does not get stiff cause i hate to pull the blanket over my face
but yes the scarf is to not hurt your muscles not to keep the troat warm in generell
and if it is beloe minus 2°C i usually keep it closed
i sleep not as well as if it was open but i also dont get sick
but i open it half an hour before going to sleep if that is the case

Im from the balkans and I so agree. especiallay about the independecy, I personally believe that on hand its so good for the individual but on the other hand I've seen people cheating that way much more than someone would who isnt "allowed" to cross some lines and whos not that independant,, more clingy instead and so on. I believe that way it s also easier to get seperated from someone.
