Ive been stuck in a learning rut and this video brought to light the answer [ hopefully] there are a couple things that inspire me 1- picking up a guitar and playing one of your intros and learning it by ear [or from another u tube influencer] , 2- we babysit my 1 year old grandson 5 days a week there is nothing more inspiring that watching him grow and learn I know you can relate by the opening of this video and by the way he LOVES guitars

Congrats for your piano skils as well...and thank you for inspiring even old busy people...I often used the case that I had to choose between study the guitar and, may be become very good, or play the guitar and enjoy it...I arrived at 54 jamming in so many countries and with so many people that I can barely remember...and when I listen to a song that I do not know how to play...I just find the way to play it my way...the best I can.

That's exactly how i've been learning guitar for 20 Years now. Really enjoyed playing mostly difficult pieces...but had a stagnation feeling those last 5 Years, learning caged systèm and" practising" really pimped my composition/improvisation skills....+, You remember better what you're learning when you get the theroy behind the piece : chords progressions become logical...! Whatever works when you're happy with it!

There is such a life lesson here....every person learning 'anything' should get some inspriation from this. I took piano lessons as a kid...probably from 10 - 12 years old [1977 - 1979 to date my old ass]. My piano teacher lived across the street, and he'd come over with the John Thompson's Modern Course for the Piano, and whatever other books? Teach me scales, songs from the book, and whatnot. I was so bored with the piano [My parents listened to heavy doses of The Beatles, Stones, Elton John, Billy Joel, etc..etc..] One day I heard 'Boogie Woogie' piano being played on a Tom & Jerry cartoon...and I was like 'WHOA! I want to learn THAT!?!?'....so I explained to my teacher verbally what I had heard, and he said "Oh like this, is this what you're talking about?" He proceeded to whip out some Johnnie Johnston riff on this upright piano of ours...he KILLED IT...and I was blown away! I said "YES!!! YES!!!...show me THAT!?". You know what he said to me "Nah, practice your scales, eventually you'll get to this." I was so deflated and discouraged, and didn't want to practice at that point...gave up piano, like an idiot. BUT picked up the guitar at 22 because I felt like I wasted my parents money on piano...and now I play guitar, in bands...and I'm teaching myself piano all over again thanks to UA-camr gentleman like yourself. So, even at 54 years old I say to you sir: "Thanks for the encouragement and tips and lessons!" They are not falling on deaf ears. - RT

I had taken up guitar at, lets say 15 years old when I bought a 72 Telecaster!. I was really excited and motivated then, and I had time and money to buy guitar stuff. I was starting to make alright progress. When I was 35 I was working 65 plus hours a week and I had a wife and four wonderful children. I'm a busy guy ! How much time do I have to pursue my guitar hobby now? I still don't have the time and I'm 64. I still love to play my guitars though. Thanks for the Lessons!

Love your piano sound, much easier than guitar, I have been playing guitar for 50 years, piano 20 years, I have never cried while playing guitar but the beauty of playing Duke Ellington and related jazz tunes has had me crying several times. For guitarists, get a piano, get some of those big note songbooks and you will see it's much easier than you think, and very rewarding. Thank you for another inspiring video.

Honestly some of the best advice. Whenever people ask “how do I get better at guitar” the answer is always to pick up the guitar because you love it and you would rather spend your time doing that than anything else. The skills will come naturally.

Thank you for the great advice. However, I suppose that at some moment you will have to stop playing something you like and "practice" a passage that is complicated. For example, a song requires certain patterns to play an arpeggio sequence. In the end, you will have to practice a few arpeggio exercises to master those finger movements. It has happened to me that to play something I had to practice certain things in order to "tell" my brain how to do it. I suppose everyone has a way to learn things. Great video and awesome piano playing!!!

    As if hahah
Its necesarry to have your scales down and make music with them .. if your goal is to be a proper guitarplayer. 95 % of us are not always super excited about playing the guitar. Discipline is the key to get good , whether we want or not.. If I would ve relied on my motivation all the time I wouldnt be near as good as I am today . Just saying

    • @GuitarPilgrim

OK, but.... When most of your audience plays, we often play what you're playing, but without the polish that often never arrives. Me thinks you must have done some rote scale shit in the past just to get your fingers going where they're suppose to go--or, you're just gifted as hell. I just played songs over and over for 20 years, but now that I'm doing scales my fingers cooperate more than they used to. Often the issue with Tubers like you, the Active Melody guy, etc. is y'all are inured at being great and sort of forget the path you took to get there, all those *BONK* notes

I started from 0 after 25 years of not touching the guitar and decided to learn Sultans of swing. I practice 3h every day and move along the song gradually and after a few months I learn all piece. Then I focused on dynamic and feeling another few months. Now I play it great and when someone see me playing it, he can't believe. In the meantime, I started to learn other songs they move and inspire me and realize that I am learning them with more ease and joy...so, he is wright!

This is the most valuable lesson on UA-cam. Learn the songs that made you pick up the guitar. First song I learnt on guitar was Scar tissue by RHCP. When I warm up, I always play this first. It's still excites me to this day that I can play it and that was 8 years ago.

For years I was stuck on practice and this year I said “fuck it, I just wanna play Santana’s Samba Pa Ti”. I found a good video tutorial and promised myself I would play it with a month. It took me 3 months. But I did it. And by learning that song I compressed bending, blues passages, quick slides, short legato runs, a nice visualization of the scales across the fretboard, staccato, and (my personal nightmare) muting the strings to avoid string noise.
My improvement was unbelievable, because I have fun! Now, I’m learning Led Zeppelin’s “The Song Remains The Same”.

So very true Mr Pilgrim, I think this is why learning songs is the best way to 'learn guitar' - you approach each song like its own self contained project and discover what you need to accomplish this - several years later and 20 songs later you can play! By the way, you are a superb piano player (but you knew that already).

You are one talented dude, dude! Thanks for the Chopin, the practical philosophy, and all the great fretwork. But really...you didn't get that good at classical piano by just playing. Surely there was tedious scale work somewhere along the way, no? I taught myself blues harmonica by trying to play along with Paul Butterfield records, but I never got over the hump to be able 'just play' until I got the basics down by playing along with lesser players like Mayall, Brian Jones and Keith Relf. Then I could get how to follow the masters...

As lead guitarist in a Santana Tribute that try's to present Santana music as close as possible to the original recordings I spend time sorting out solo's note for note. After that I need to study and try not only to master the solo but also try and make it sound as close to Carlos as possible. I guess the entire process should be considered practice.....but for me it's more like a a challenge and a lot of fun and doesn't feel like practice at all.
