- Dune 2 The Building of a Dynasty - Back when wargames were in a slump and drifting into oblivion, there came a game like no other. A real time strategy that balanced combat, resource management, exploration and kickass music. There came Dune 2.

(Game Description) Dune II: The Building of a Dynasty (titled Dune II: Battle for Arrakis in Europe and Dune: The Battle for Arrakis for the Mega Drive/Genesis port respectively) is a real-time strategy Dune video game developed by Westwood Studios and released by Virgin Interactive in December 1992. It is based upon David Lynch's 1984 movie Dune, an adaptation of Frank Herbert's science fiction novel of the same name.
While not necessarily the first real-time strategy (RTS) video game, Dune II established the format that would be followed for years to come. As such, Dune II is the archetypal "real-time strategy" game. Striking a balance between complexity and innovation, it was a huge success and laid the foundation for Command & Conquer, Warcraft, StarCraft, and many other RTS games that followed.

Looks like a fun game…
I just finished the Ordos campaign and it was my fav, because the deviator is the BEST unit ever!
This was a cult game in my school. Everyone played it. Even the computer class teachers played it... sometimes during class.
It's indeed kind of interesting to note that the very first RTS game immediately introduced the concept of superweapons :)
It's not the Atreides who have those missiles though. It's the Harkonnen (and the Imperial army, too)
Dune 2 : The building of a genre
The Dune 2000 (the defacto remake by Westwood) was a really good game, but damn did the Ai try to murder you to death even on the easier settings.
This game is my favourite game of all time. It’s so nostalgic to me. I was blown away when I was in high school. A friend gave me a copy and I couldn’t stop playing. I remember huddling around with other high school friends in the library and talking about strategies on how to take on each level. I loved it show much that I bought the original 3.5 floppy disks game as a student. Best game I purchased.
Yes, this was my first RTS-game. Harvesting the Spice :)
Zooming? Selecting multiple Units?
That's not how you play that game.
Indeed, I IMMEDIATELY noticed the high-res, zoomed out map and multiple-unit selection and thought - that's most certainly NOT the original game.
It's Dune Dynasty. It is not just some clone, though. It's a game enhancement built on the original game's code, as decompiled by the OpenDune project. You could see it as a kind of modernizing patch. Despite the UI changes, it still plays and reacts exactly like the original game. Minus a couple of bug fixes and optional enhancements, that is :)
I wish there was something like that for WC2.
There is - and - there isn't. There's an engine, WarGus - based on Stratagus - that makes it possible to play WC2 on newer hardware. Works great.
Stratagus isn't based on the actual WC2 engine though... for obvious reasons; unlike Westwood, Blizzard is still around to sue people's pants off. They should really start realizing that releasing 25 year old code costs a lot less than an army of lawyers...
Alright, my breakdown of this review...
-Atreides are not exempt from sandworm attacks; quite the contrary, in fact. Due to the fact they are seen as as allied with the Fremen House (which the sandworms technically belong to), they are the only House (besides Fremen themselves of course) whose units don't automatically attack sandworms, meaning that as Atreides, it takes a lot more micromanagement to get rid of them. The behaviour you see in the video is the result of sandworms set to "Area Guard", which makes them act a lot less predictable than the classic "ambush" one which makes them rampage and eat everything in sight. It is not related to the player being Atreides, though.
-Westwood has played with the idea of environmental threats after Dune II. Tiberian Sun has visceroids, Tiberium Fiends and Floaters. While not as deadly as the one-hit-kill sandworm, adult visceroids in TS are still very dangerous and can chew up a nice chunk of your base if you aren't paying attention. Also note that in the original Dune II, sandworms disappear automatically after eating 3 units. The version you're playing there has some interesting optional settings that can change that, though.
-Interestingly, the simplified contextual controls that RTS is so famous for now were designed for the Sega version of Dune II, because moving a cursor to a sidebar to give commands would take way too long on a controller.
-The AI in Dune Dynasty is, in essence, unchanged, but the Dynasty pack often comes with the recommendation to also install the fix pack made by MrFlibble. This pack, which solves a bunch of bugs, notably fixes some broken AI logics in the mission scripts. These logics, indeed, make the AI much harder, since it makes it tactically retreat and regroup when its armies get damaged. But this is the way the game is _supposed_ to be. The fact they originally mindlessly suicided their units into your base one by one was a _bug._
Well said Nyerguds.
Loved this video! During Corona lockdown I rediscovered my love for this game since playing it on my old Amiga 500 in the 90's. I've not stopped playing it since having completed it numerous times with each house. And you are right about the best way is to start playing the old version first and then transitioning to Dune Legacy later (much harder, but way better user interface). Absolutely brilliant game!
There is an android port of dune 2 that's no longer on the app store (it wasn't EA sanctioned) but is still around online that plays on phones AMAZINGLY. The unit-command-click gameplay functions SO WELL with a phone touch UI that it's insane. I've beaten all the campaigns again on the phone and it was glorious. Dune 2 has come full circle and become the best RTS you can get for a touchscreen device.
It's back on the app store
Dune 2 was a great game back then. now that i've read the first two books, i wouldn't want a remake, but a game with more depth
Got a nice build on my phone. Works well. I got to experience my favorite Atreides tactic of overwhelming the enemy just with masses of fremen from palace
How does this not have more views? This is the dawn of a genre.
This game was soo amazing back in the days...one of the BEST RTS games of all time.
I really liked the Emperor Battle for Dune game. Hopefully someone will make a new dune rts game.
No chance, because the family who holds the licence wants to let the series stay a gem. And new makers would only have potency to ruin the concept.
It would be nice, but it wont happen. Games alike this may come out, which i will try out ofcourse. Dune will always be the best of best. And the first of first.
Believe it or not, the sega genesis port is pretty good
One of my favourite games of all time, others are Starcraft and Transport Tycoon Deluxe, Alone In the dark..
I kinda miss Emperor Battle for Dune
The mother of all RTS....nothing beats them
thank you for this video, children these days believe the RTS genre began with starcraft.
You can play it for free online though "Dune Golden Path", add me on steam if you want to game "Roy Fokker". it plays like a modern RTS with attack move, hot keys, control groups etc.
Great game, still got my original amiga version! Now if I only still had my amiga to play it on..
If Dune isn't being used, then perhaps Emperor of the Fading Suns can be Free Real Estate.
I keep getting the name wrong. It is Emperor of the Fading Suns, not Empire.
The problem with the interface wasn't that it didn't have context-sensitive right click but that you had to follow these steps to control a unit:
- Left click the unit
- Left click on a button representing the action you'd like to be taken
- Click the target unit/area
Repeat above steps for EACH AND EVERY UNIT you control...
It was almost exhausting in bigger battles/troop movement...
If I remember correctly there were at least hotkeys for the move, attack .. actions. Still painful though ;-)
One of the best rst games
one of the best games of all time
It's time to wake up. It was then opener of ways, not the best of its kind
Ordos were not actually a fan made faction they were mentioned in actual dune lore before the game. Westwood just liked the name and made them a thing for their third faction
not in the novels though but in the encyclopedia by Willis E. McNelly from 1984
Console sales reaching an all time low? Literally the exact opposite is happening right now.
Wii U is in the bucket, Xbox One is underachieving by a large margin. PS4 is the only one on the up and up.
Where did you learn to fly.
Rendezvous!! |/:).
You know how "Two" is not pronounced "Tvo"? So " Zwei" is the german word for two and it`s pronounced "ts-why".
Germans do pronounce the W as something in between a W and v though.
8:53 "Death Hand approaching" (*_*)
They always told me "Missile approaching" o.o
"Dyuun Dyuu"
Do you happen to know where I can get a working version of dune dynasty?
Can you do Gangsters Organized Crime next?
Some day, yes.
What is your opinion on dune 2000?
can we have a Dune2000 game review. plz
You missed maybe the single most important inspiration for Dune II. Namely, Herzog Zwei on the Mega Drive.
Did you even watch the video??
Are you going to translate "your greatest work" into English someday?
The Franck Herbert's Dune Review? I'd have to play it again for better footage, and I'd rather o bang my head on a wall instead of doing that. If I can find a lazy way to do it, I'll try.
