    You are the only person on the internet to explain this! It’s taken me days and days of fruitless searching to find someone who will explain those file formats and I am so thankful. Why on Earth don’t any camera manuals tell you what L, M, S etc mean?! I have a Canon M50 with the worst manual ever and there is one extra RAW format with a little lock symbol ... not sure what that is!

    So.... if I reduce the size of the photo in post production vs reducing the size in the camera settings, I will get a better quality? I just tried that and I really can't tell the difference.

    I use raw + high quality jpg. When I offload my images (using iPhoto) two files are produced.
    Both however are jpg extensions.
    I know there is such a thing as Lossless JPEG, (and JPEG 2000), but I'm not sure if the data that iPhoto is storing isn't being converted to a lossy jpg.
    Can one be sure that the data in the jpg file is lossless?

    okay I have a question I hope someone can help me with. I have the Canon Rebel T3 and also shoot in the L mode, the first one. When I upload my photos to photoshop,, they are generally 59.333 in x 39.556 with a resolution of 72 I am uploading photos to vistaprint to make calendars. They ask for 300 resolution. So, I go in photoshop and change the resolution to 300 which changes the size of my photo to 14.24 x 9.493 this is with resample unchecked, which is okay on the size for the calendars. This just seems to be a lot of work to get good quality prints. Why would they not print out okay with how they come off the camera, the 72 resolution? Thanks. I'm new at having calendars and the such printed. This resolution thing baffles me for some reason.

    I shoot with Canon Large JPEG file size. The file dimensions are 6000 x 4000 on a 24 megabit image sensor. It really depends on the subject matter of your image. If I shoot flying ducks against a blue sky the file size is about 9 megs. I shoot a Fall colour landscape then the file size is about 14 or 15 megs.

      **JPEG**
      pros: Don't need to "convert" from the native sensor format -- view-able by all computers since it is in a R,G,B format. Can pick "quality" which determines the file size.
      cons: Not lossless. Losses quality each time it is saved. May be poor quality or have artifacts such as color fringing, etc. due to automatic settings of white balance, color saturation, contrast, and sharpness. Each red, green, and blue channels are limited to 256 colors. i.e. 2^(8+8+8) = 2^24 = 16 million colors.
      **RAW**
      pros: Lossless, Best quality (native) from the sensor, such as 2^12 per channel = 2^(12+12+12) = 2^36 = 68 billion colors. Usually stored in a R,G,B,G pixel format. Complete control over white balance, color saturation, contrast, and sharpness when converting to JPEG.
      cons: Only view-able on the camera; a computer requires software that knows how to read it (Adobe LightRoom, Canon Digital Photo Professional, etc.), and to "transform" it into a "view-able" format such as JPEG. Typically 5x bigger file size then JPEG. Requires time and knowledge to be able to convert it to the best looking JPEG.
      **RAW + JPEG**
      pros: Best of both worlds, flexibility to tweak the image if needed.
      cons: Takes up extra flash memory space.
      Always shoot in either RAW or RAW+JPEG so that you have highest quality available if/when you need it.

    Compress format is not Just Crunching down . It has very technical logic behind of it. it is to reduce capacity and bandwidth without losing information. It is better to just use Compress format.

    Why does it takes more memory when shooting raw pictures?

    • @JoeJacksonJr
      @JoeJacksonJr 8 років тому +1

      +Le Infested Jpegs are loosely compression. Which means image data is thrown away during the compression. RAW files are not, so all that data is there in the image, even if you cant see it. Also Jpegs are currently 8 bit color per RGB channel, RAW files are 14bit per channel. Hope this helps.

    • @MarkSM
      @MarkSM 7 років тому

      The difference is compression or not. JPG=compressed file. RAW=is not compressed. (file storage option) A PC also offers compression. Not recommended for your photo folders.

This made it possible for Joe to take pictures which have that jaw-dropping-effect after you take a look at them. Perhaps it will help you too.
