  • First, a quick tip for the Akai Force - how to set up a note latch button that lets you sustain notes indefinitely without holding them down. Then we get into a technique popularized by Steve Reich back in the '60s with phasing tape loops. This creates a really interesting effect. I have just started playing with this technique. I love trying out new ideas and seeing where they lead me.
    The phasing loops should work fine on MPC as well. I'm not sure about the note latch trick though. TubeDigga did a video about how to do this on the MPC, and it's quite a bit different, so maybe check out his video if you need to know how to do this on MPC.
    Here's a link to the loopop video I mentioned that got me onto this.

    Just ordered a force and your channel has been great to learn about the various features you can play with. Thanks!

    Ha, this is exactly what I'm going to need to prepare my next live set! I'm planning to record a bunch of tape loops into the Force and perform by combining them on the spot and letting them run out of phase to produce varying textures.

    Excellent!
    I used MIDI tracks to send individual notes if a chord to an external poly synth to deconstruct and reconstruct the chord over time.

    Extremely helpful, sir. Exactly what I was hoping to do with my Force. Much appreciated. Your instructional videos are excellent resources.

      Thanks Will! Glad you found this one so useful. I was having a lot of fun with this when I made the video but I haven’t circled back to the technique yet. I have a feeling there’s a lot more good stuff to be found.

    It REALLY needs a latch mode for playback. It was part of the S5000/MPC4000.

    • @joefilbrun
      @joefilbrun  Рік тому

      This is how most of the ‘latch’ functions I’ve encountered work. How was the MPC4000 different?

    • @danieklerr
      @danieklerr Рік тому

      @@joefilbrun .. On the S1000/5000, MPC2500/4000, you hold a pad plus mute and it plays indefinitely. Same with all the Roland SP units, which have a dedicated button.

    • @joefilbrun
      @joefilbrun  Рік тому

      @@danieklerr I see. So you can un-latch specific notes/pads if there is more than 1 latched?

    Is there a way to drone out a piano plugin? Tried with stage piano and fabric piano. The tail stays with a longer decay but it fades with sustain on still. (It dies off immediately if I turn sustain off tho)

    • @joefilbrun
      @joefilbrun  Рік тому

      It might not be possible in the native plugin if it’s not set up to sustain. You could possibly sample it into a keygroup or drum program and loop a section of it so that it can sustain indefinitely.

  • @suitandtieguy
    @suitandtieguy Рік тому

    Also "sustain" is nice but in general synthesizers need to support a "latch" mode for chords so you can hold a chord until you play another one without releasing and depressing a sustain pedal when you play a new one.

      I don’t know that I have any synths that work that way. Hmm, maybe the DeepMind does when you combine the hold and chord functions… I’m not sure if I’ve tried them together. Will have to look into it. Do you know some that do?
