The Volvo S60R is a car that is full of modern technology ahead of its time. With a five cylinder turbo, 14 pounds of boost, all wheel drive, brembo brakes, and a fantastic interior. Unfortunately overshadowed by its competitors at the time the Volvo S60R deserves a second look. For the money the Volvo S60R offers just about everything that makes a sports car great while being a daily driver easy on your bones. It sounds like a Viper, its power delivery is fantastic, and it's comfortable. So why consider one of these as a project? Let's talk about it.

      Wait a minute! So my '89 245 ($300, 270K miles)
Is actually worth the $4500 I have spent on refurbishing?
The only thing I didn't touch is the head. Other than that, oil pump to injectors, complete brake and suspension refurb, & changed from that ugly peanut butter colored interior to the charcoal and sag 5 spokes.
Black headliner & the only crome is the emblem on the grill.
Oh yeah I have a 4x4x8 animal cage on top.
      I call it,
      Midnight Safari.
      I also have a '77 242 ('89 2.3/M47/'83 ZF T K member swap) hacked/cloned into a 142.
No wing windows, that is the only outside sign.

Why wouldn't you want the values to rise? I understand wanting to buy an R...but they're rare af online, and to get the good ones (06-07 in manual) is nearly impossible. But if u have a relatively base model...I've gained 3k since I bought it...almost double the price of what I bought it at. And, then more people respect Volvo builds.

There's a dude on UA-cam with well over 800awhp on his red S60R. Stock trans blew right at hitting 1000hp, a testament to how strong some of the mechanical components can be on these Volvos.

Super good review. My mom actually bought one of these S60Rs when I was a baby in late 2005 so she got a 2006 model year. She still owns it today and it’s going to be my first car! It’s Electric Silver over Nordkap Blue interior with the M66 manual it currently has 277k miles and it’s still going pretty good! It’s the first car I ever drove and learned manual in. My mom is planning to get a new car this summer so it’ll finally be mine! I already drive it more than her since she’s working from home and I love it. Super excited to have it to myself soon it’s an awesome car.

Yeah, I was going to do the same thing for my son, but mine was pronounced "totaled" by my insurance company. Oh well, it was my dream and not his, because he likes JDM cars that goes sideways. But the feeling for wanting another S60R still dwells because that car was my "screen saver " on my old computer back when the car was still a prototype. My car was a 2006 Black w/nordic blue interior that had to be special ordered from Sweden. I was fortunate enough to test drive one in Hampton Virginia a year prior when they had only one stick shift on the lot. Test drove it, then shortly thereafter, pre-ordered it for the upcoming 2006 models.

Yeah my buddy bought one and didn’t get to drive it more than 50 miles in the year he owned it. He bought a clean low mileage R with an electrical gremlin and figured “how hard could it be to fix?” Turns out the answer is “impossibly hard”, even for the dealership. They gave it back to him a few times claiming it was fixed after replacing all kinds of modules and harnesses (his total repair bill was $6k), but the electrical system would freak out a few miles down the road every time. The dealership eventually gave up and told him he’d have to take it somewhere else. He gave up and sold it for half of what he paid. Ended up losing over $15k altogether.
That was 8-10 years ago. He’s good now! Has a new F150 Plat for work and he just bought a ‘15 Mustang GT P-PP in mint condition.

I still think they look great and sound incredible; and would make a fantastic daily driver slightly modded. I like the S60R so much brought it twice! 04 & later an 06. 06 got the 6 speed auto & slightly different maping. 06 also did not restrict full torque in 1st or 2nd like the original did.
You might want to get it remaped at the dealer ? I think it's a Polestar program. You might already have it if it's holding rpm during shifting ?
Check the suspension. My two never dipped or squat under braking or power ?
It only dipped under braking when the electronic Monroe struts needed replacing.
Oh! I did upgrade the front antisway bar that really leveled out the left right transitions! I believe it's a blue iPD product ?
I installed 18" Pirelli P Zero on OEM rims. Sticks like glue. Reduce pushing in corners noticed. I'm sure you know, on the power in turns with front bias chassis.
Such a spirited car. Very few can deliver what these S60R brings..even way back from 04 !!
The perfect balance of Dr Jekyll Mr Hyde ! Lol. No other car maker can claim that personality.

I've always loved this car. I've known about it for a very long time, it's my fav Volvo. I basically only like 2 Volvos, this and the 2006 S40 (loveee how that looks too when it just has a couple mods). With this S60R, I love the soundd, a 5 cylinder is one of the best sounds you can get out of a car. And 2nd, I'm actually loving the silver shifter. I've gotten a ride in one of these and I was too happy, it's just a baller car to have. Nobody expects a random Volvo to move or sound like it. 😂There is one spec of these, it comes in silver, but the interior, the seats are bright orange. 😂 Many people hate that seat color, but I thought it looked pretty dope. I wouldn't often want bright orange seats, but I was feeling it in that S60. Glad you finally got to review one, been waiting on this review. Even the manual S60R is hard to find, I think some came with auto. So I'm very glad you found this car to check out, to showcase to the people and yourself! 🙂

Been waiting for this day forever, litterly was fixing my aoc AWD pump on my manual S60R when you posted this
Gotta say the S60R is a very strange car, it's not something that you can really explain well, you just have to drive one to get it. I've had mine for about 8 years now and love it. Gotta say some coilovers, chassis bracing, sway bars and another hundred horsepower really wake it up and the car doesn't feel patched together, it takes mods very very well

Love this review. I have a built 1998 S70 T5 manual. First car I ever drove was 2006 V70R. The wagon version of this car. In my opinion the earlier FWD Volvos handle slightly better than the AWD ones. They feature passive 4 wheel steering using what's called the delta link rear suspension. Which when you really throw it into corners definitely can be felt. Although it can be a struggle to put power down in the FWD cars in the bends.

I have a 98 V70 T5. And it could roast 1 wheel peel into 2nd gear no problem. And yeah, thing was a BEAST in the corners. But honestly sucked on gravel cuz the rear liked to swing out a little and ABS/TC was out(preferred it that way anyway) I've always loved Volvos and that just made me 100% sure they are the best cars ever.

The S60 also has passive rear steering, quite a lot of cars do in fact. It's pretty common for most IRS suspensions. All it means is your toe changes under cornering forces. Hell, my Mazda has it and was designed 30 years ago, and the model before that had it and was designed in the mid 89s.

The Saab 9-5 Aero is very underrated much like all performance Volvo cars. The Saab used 2 really good transmissions. FWD for the 1st gen 9-5s. Aisin AF33 5 Speed Automatic and Saab designed F35 5 Speed Manual (We don't talk about the GM 50-42LE tranny. Such garbage.). Cool thing is those transmissions can handle a good amount of power, especially built units. 4 door sedan or 5 door wagon. In the top trim, you get a 2.3 Turbocharged 4 cylinder DOHC engine with VVT and all other goodies. Stock turbo is a Mitsubishi TD04 and that turbo can handle more power before a bigger one is needed. Bone stock, a B235R makes 250hp out of the box and you can get up to 30+ mpg just cruising.
Their are a few built Saabs roaming the country. I'd say I would love to see David review a 9-3 Aero or 9-5 Aero (Aero X models too).
Only reason I know about Saabs is because I had one years ago. To this day, I still regret selling it. Best car I've ever drove. Trust me, Saabs are not built like Toyotas or Hondas. They're built kinda like Mercedes or BMW. They can be reliable or they can be unreliable af. If one is reliable, keep doing frequent fluid changes and you'll be set on having a happy engine and happy car.

The Volvo s60r is one of those cars that has a very distinct cult following and can be appreciated by its devoted followers while still getting some recognition from others as well, but what I love most is how it can still fly under the radar of many people because nowadays "Its just and old Volvo".
