Do you have to strip before doing this technique if the wood is just clear stained? I'm trying to tone down the orange on a ton of kitchen cabinets and trying to find away to do this without stripper cause a lot of it I'll habe to do inside 🥴
I did my kitchen cabinets whiteout striping. They were oak orange cabinets but because the oak grain it’s so big it bleed inside the oak. I used light gray and it became a little bit transparent. It looks fantastic. Try with an old piece of oak or inside the cabinet.
Thanks for sharing this great technique! Couple questions if you get a chance to reply... Do you ever apply a second coat or is one usually enough? With such a high amount of water the wood grain must get raised, especially with softer woods; how do you deal with this issue?
Love this taupe wash. I have a cabinet I may try that on. As far as brushes go for sealing furniture, I actually use a staining pad. It’s the size of a sponge and there are zero brush marks. It gives great coverage and I just find it’s better than other things I’ve tried. A deck staining pad works great also. 😊
@@ariadnamaloney9273 Yes, I use the staining pads to apply the poly. It honestly works so well and allows you to get around corners, into crevices, etc. without brush strokes. I’m so particular about having a smooth surface and these work great. Try on a small piece of furniture first just to get the hang of it. I really think you’ll be glad you did.
@@1widener thank you so much, you are a life saver, I usually use only wax because so far I hate the finish I get with poly, I’ll try the pad next time, I really appreciate your generosity, have a beautiful day.
I just stripped an old coffee table that I've upcycled as my kitchen island top ... and found the wood was way too orange for my taste. I was thinking of white-washing it. Thanks for the demo! (I also found the same brush and was using that to apply the stripper yesterday. A 3" brush sure makes quick work of the job!)
So pretty and refreshed and modern looking! I use a foam to apply water based polyurethane... This brush looks amazing! And the deck brush is so useful on large surfaces! Thanks so much for sharing
I apply poly with a roller. Scuff sand, wipe and apply a second coat. For dresser/table tops, etc. I add a coat of wax once poly is dry. Gives it another layer of moisture protection as a lot of folks don’t use coasters.
I just started painting furniture. I painted my first piece all black because my white wash got patchy. My second piece I did the wash with ratio just like you and I will never do it any other way, wow so easy! 🥰 How long do you wait until you apply a top coat?
I’m working on an old beat up pine dresser and will be doing tan wash and your layered stain technique for a rustic look. I used that on a writing desk and it sold in two days!
I LOVE this!!! I have maple kitchen cabinets with a honey finish and I’m wanting this same look would recommend I do this same technique or should I do the gel stain since the wood grain is way different?
Wow! I certainly can't argue with your results! Very nice! Have you ever tried this with oil based paint thinned with mineral spirits or paint thinner? I'm looking for something to tone down the orange in pine before applying a stain over the top, and I'd like it to be more durable than a water-based paint.

Great information! I've been working for months on a buffet from the 40's or 50's that's made with a type of wood I've never seen before. Stripped, sanded to within an inch of it's life, treated 3x with oxcallic acid, and it's still a rust color. It's also super soft and dings practically by looking at it! To say its been a challenge is putting it mildly. I want to wash the top and have tried at least 4 colors, all of which dont seem mask the rust/orange. Maybe Harvest Brown is the trick!!
Have you tried the Nail Polish Remover method? You carefully pour on, spread with scraper, just wait 1 min, scrape & leave debris to dry into crispy chips you can just brush into trash. No gloppy mess. Work in sections since it works quickly. Save a pointed tip from like hair color squeeze bottle (or use the whole bottle& tip from beauty store), those work great for applying.
I purchased a two-tiered coffee table and I have been racking my brain on the ideal finish. It has a greenish brown finish on it and I am in the process of sanding and the wood is blonde so this technique is exactly what I wanted but I didn’t want to whitewash it or do a faux wood paint. I want the table to look natural yet a little weathered. Thank for sharing!
How can I get this look with a coffee table that I’ve put primer on? It’s beautiful and I’m keeping it, but I want this look for it. I had to primer it because there was to much damage.
Yes, you are correct. Water will always raise fibers in wood. Before applying top coat, you must de-nib the surface of the raised fibers. Use 220 or higher grit sandpaper and lightly go over the surface. Wipe clean to remove all dust and then proceed with your top coat.
Someone questioned about doing kitchen cabinets. Do you need to strip them first? I have those horrible “honey” oak but they are really orange. Just put up new tile backsplash and they really look orange now. Suggestions?
Hello just found your channel and have a question for you. Recently we decided to remove carpet from our stairs going to basement. As we pulled off the carpet I noticed painted stair nose and thought the treads are solid wood which later after they were off noticed stair treads are particle board 😢 and can’t be refinished. My question is our floor is the color of the cabinet you are redoing here what color of base paint you would would choose after priming. Thank you so much.
Hello! I love how this piece turned out! I’m curious if you refinish the interior of the piece ever. I notice with the drawers open, the orange is very noticeable. Thoughts?
I love putting a taupe wash on oak, but 1 part paint to 12 parts water 😮? Wow. I’ve been using 1 part paint to 2 parts water. Maybe if I use the color you suggest..?
Right?! I know, it does sound extreme but I’ve done that more equal ratio too and others but this one I don’t have to pre wet the surface or wipe away excess and I can just keep brushing amd blending, but my wood is thirsty after all the stripping and sanding so I feel like it just drinks it up 😂
