WOW! I'm going to have to buy another notebook! Thanks for all this great information! This will be a very handy series for those, like me, who are always trying different varieties. You lay everything out in a great format. A solid start for 2022. Waiting for part 2, Take care!

Seed Trial Manager sounds like an amazing job! Traveling the world to view acres of trial plants! I'd never heard of such a job, but it explains a lot about your organization, articulation and the wealth of knowledge you have on gardening! Sounds like a dream job, spread sheets and all!

Thanks Jenna for sharing your favorites! On celery: I had a crop of strong flavored celery that wasn’t great for fresh eating. I filled the 10 shelf Excalibur dehydrator chock full, leaves and all, and dried it snappy crisp. Powdered it and WOW what a great seasoning on fresh tomatoes and in cooking. All of that powdered celery fit in a pint jar and lasted a couple years.

Your knowledge is so impressive. I’ve already bought my seeds for 2022 but I’ll definitely be putting these to the front of my 2023 wish list. Last year was my first year growing a spring garden, and I learned so much through a lot of failure. I was looking forward to trying cauliflower this year… but now I’m terrified lol.

    • @GrowfullywithJenna
      @GrowfullywithJenna  3 роки тому +1

Oh no! I didn't want to scare anyone off from cauliflower. I find that if I cover them with row covers when I transplant them in April, it really helps. Also- getting them out early so they can mature before it gets super hot is key. It took me a while to get it right! Best of luck and I hope you have a wonderful garden this year, Rachel!

RADISH. Can be used in cooking! Yeah! I make radish hash browns, or toss them into stew or throw them in with any veg when there isn’t quite enough for a good portion. I’m a low carb fan so the radish is great to experiment with in cooking (including the greens). Love your videos. Am binge watching!

I just purchased Purple Viking seed potatoes and they're scheduled to arrive today. I'm so excited to try it! I have some store-bought potatoes that self-started from what was leftover from my planting last summer, and a couple started from compost scraps tossed into my back garden bed, BUT I really really wanted to try these potatoes you raved so highly about in another video. I also got the traditional German Butterball, because it sounded tasty. Fingers crossed!! It's my first time ever purchasing seed potatoes. You also inspired me to get sweet potato slips. Like most Gardener ( counting anyone with at least into their second season)
Most folks don't have nearly your experience as a taste tester judge. But 70 years age and always had a 20 ' and up to 60 square feet garden every year I've had taters ,I'm listening as how my family rates them ,Best for favor is Purple fingers from Holland Seads,Second for favor Yukon Gold but to small yield, First season with Purple fingers we ate to fast but the few we dug late season did seem to out grow the Yukon Gold.
I've read Gurney judge your Viking Purple are better than the Golds and large yield.
Bet I'm going to enjoy only the Purple Viking and my Purple Fingers as long as I have a garden ,I also got midnight snack them red and black tomatoes now.
Thanks for telling your opinion about your experience.

Great video! I like to chop & fry my radishes in oil with their greens & eat them with scrambled or fried eggs. We also enjoyed sweet pickled radishes. Then the spicy radishes turn mild when cooked, so delicious! They’re also good roasted. I enjoyed some radishes with butter & salt myself. Supposedly the French eat a French breakfast type radish with butter & salt on a baguette or piece of French bread. I tried that and it was also good. Hi Jenna, I am so very thankful for this video. 2022 will be my 3rd year gardening in Ohio (Zone 6A). I found your channel near the end of my 2021 season but was unable to put all of your advice to good use. So 2022 will be my year, and I am planning to expand the garden, I am so very excited to get started and do everything right this time.
About those radishes and eating them the way your grandmother did with the butter and salt. Try doing them again with the Kerri Gold and a little bit of the Sea Salt, and then roast them in the oven. They taste slightly like a roasted potato. I even read somewhere last year where people were replacing their potatoes with radishes on their Keto/Paleo Low or No Carb diets. My husband and I love radishes, even the hotter, peppery ones. For us, a salad just doesn't seem complete without them, and snacking on them is a real treat.
Goodness, I think I am going to need a much bigger notebook...lol. There is so much really great information in your videos, and so very helpful in my zone 6A garden (East of Columbus). I am really hoping to be able to have a much bigger garden this coming year on our 1.75-acre rental property. Last season wasn't so great with all the rain we had and it was even more difficult for me to care for since my husband had to take a job in Charleston, SC after the Covid layoffs at COTA. I am disabled after an on-the-job injury several years ago, and subsequent 7-spinal surgeries, resulting in a lot of arthritis. I'm still going to give it one heck of a good try as I really do love gardening and also all of the canning and dehydrating that I do to put food away for the winter months and gifting to our neighbors, friends, and family.
I also really love learning all that I can about holistic and herbal remedies so I want to expand my herbal and flower gardens as well. I already grow a ton of volunteer mint on the side of the house and two more varieties in the garden. I planted thyme, sage, and oregano when we first set up the garden and now they come in volunteer every year also. My goal is to plant more flowers, especially the herbal varieties and edible ones also, like the pansy, calendula, and echinacea and of course really big, beautiful sunflowers, lots of sunflowers as they are so beautiful.
I'd really love to find a way to grow vining berries, grapes, fruit trees, and bushes, as well as flowering trees like lilac, dogwood, honeysuckle, and others in big pots so that when we do find our forever homestead I have a headstart on those fruits that take a few years to produce. Thank you so much for sharing all of your knowledge with us in these well-produced and informative videos Many Blessings to you Jenna.

I will definitely give the radishes a try using that method- thank you. And I'm very glad to hear the information in my videos has been helpful.
I'm sorry to hear about the injury and all the subsequent surgeries- I can see where that would definitely but a damper on gardening activities. I'm so glad to hear you're still at it though!
I have a big interest in herbal/holistic remedies as well. Luckily, my sister is a bit of a guru in this area- so I rely on her a lot. It is one area I would like to someday do more videos on.
Take care and I hope you have a wonderful 2022!

This is my first video of yours and I’m glad I found it! I apologize if you’ve had this question multiple times, but I have to ask: How did you get into your career as a seed trial manager? Do you have a video where you talk about it and/or have any other sources to learn about this? I absolutely love seeds and collect so many. This sounds like such a wonderful career! Thanks for the video too, gives me more ideas on what I’d like to look out for and to grow!
Edit: I’m also on the look out for any books on plants, seeds, plant breeding for seeds, etc. If you have any time to give suggestions, I’d love to hear your recommendations!

No worries, Jess! Surprisingly few folks have asked me about it (and no video as of yet) 😄. I regret that I don't have super solid advice to give- I honestly kind of just fell into what I'm doing now. What I would suggest is getting connected with a seed, farming or gardening company in any way you can (even if it's not doing trialing to start with). Or- just start with something as simple as contacting one of your favorite seed companies and asking them if they ever need product tested- this is a great way to get your foot in the door!
As far as books go- I geek out on varieties (if you couldn't tell 😆) so I LOVE Amy Goldman's books. They are very informative, as well as basically being works of art! For breeding, this is good place to start: www.thriftbooks.com/w/breed-your-own-vegetable-varieties-the-gardeners--farmers-guide-to-plant-breeding--seed-saving_carol-deppe/816573/item/10334805/?mkwid=%7cdc&pcrid=76965969875190&pkw=&pmt=be&slid=&product=10334805&plc=&pgrid=1231453264698054&ptaid=pla-4580565452070221&Bing+Shopping+%7c+NEW+condition+books&msclkid=2749041657ff1b7c90df65f67c74fddd#idiq=10334805&edition=5241476 and related, this is a great guide for seed saving: www.amazon.com/Seed-Growing-Techniques-Vegetable-Gardeners/dp/1882424581/ref=pd_bxgy_img_1/134-6771914-6598427?pd_rd_w=hgigR&pf_rd_p=c64372fa-c41c-422e-990d-9e034f73989b&pf_rd_r=CDE2MM071A5HCSTMT661&pd_rd_r=a6ecfcce-1e58-43f0-afca-d4e7f50bff27&pd_rd_wg=D1gB4&pd_rd_i=1882424581&psc=1

@@radiclelife You're welcome! Ironically, I got in a degree in what is quite possibly the furthest thing from horticulture (I have a BA in Art History). But luckily a gardening company gave me a chance when I was a jobless college graduate 😆. I spent 15 years working in various aspects of the horticultural industry (everything from marketing to merchandising to creative layout), soaking up on-the-job- training and adding to the knowledge I had already accrued from two parents who are avid gardeners, and in 2017 starting managing seed trials for the Research & Development farm at Gardens Alive (a gardening company based out of Indiana/Ohio). BTW I would love it if you could do a video on "Save Your Harvest Shortcuts". There are times that life is so busy and everything is coming to harvest at the same time and this year I learned that San Marzano tomatoes are mid to late ripening and they are slow to ripen the entire bush. So I had to freeze the ripe tomatoes until I had enough to preserve. That worked out perfectly because I could deseed easily before they thawed all the way and then process when it was convenient for me. It didn't affect the flavor at all. Same with my dill. For some reason my dill stalled out until I was done with the pickling. When it was ready I was drowning in business so I cut the entire thing washed/dried and shoved it all into a gallon zip lock bag and froze it hoping it didn't ruin the harvest. I used some in a toasted tuna sandwich and also in a tarter sauce for my salmon steak and yesterday I took it out of the freezer and used it for my shrimp salad. It tasted fresh and lovely and I have since dried the rest of the frozen dill to store in in the spice rack but I'm now partial to frozen dill. Anyway I would love to read a feed of everyone's way of juggling the harvest successfully because I could use the info to juggle more successfully. Thanks!

What Jenna, do you do to protect your gardens from Japanese Stink Bugs?
You do a lot of indoor starting.
    What about direct seeding?
I will have to build an outbuilding and heat it with compost to do any early season starting and that's down the road a bit.
Lehigh is pronounced as in "Lee High." It's a valley region in PA.

Knock on wood- but I don't have too many problems with Japanese Stink Bugs (yet). If they become problematic I will probably use row covers to help keep them off my plants.
I do direct seed some crops- typically larger seeded things like corn, beans, cucurbits, some flowers and herbs. And for my leafy greens I often start indoors AND direct sow, so that I can have a succession harvest.
And I appreciate the clarification on Lehigh! Take care!
