    Pickling cucumber spiky skin: set aside some nylon mesh from an onion bag and just scrub the cucumber just before cutting. No need to peel. Enjoy! 😊

    Basil. I’m northeast OH zone 6 too. Last year, I took basil cuttings late in the summer and put them in water in the house. One of them survived to spring and I planted it outside late May after hardening off. It did try to bolt but I cut it back severely and got a big bushy productive plant again. Yesterday, I did a heavy harvest and am drying it for winter use.

    I love this series! I was excited to hear about emerald tower basil and ordered it immediately. We grow a lot of basil every year, but I have to stay on top of the pruning because they tend to bolt early. We grow lime crisp cucumbers every year and just love them (although last year our cucumber crop was a complete failure). The lime crisp are so lovely - tangy, with a thin, tender skin. The seeds are a bit pricy, but worth it.

    I found Basket of Fire peppers at Lowe’s last summer and snagged a few peppers off of it to save the seeds. I didn’t realize it was a hottie and touched my face when collecting - OMG! If they germinate I’m planning to put them in a new bed in my front garden because deer visit by night. They used to eat everything, but last year I planted lots of nasturtiums (which they didn’t eat). No one eats hot peppers in the house, but several friends (who don’t grow their own) asked for hot peppers 🌶 so I’m using them as ornaments with the potential to harvest for them too.

    • @GrowfullywithJenna
      @GrowfullywithJenna  2 роки тому +1

      Oh cool! I'm glad to hear you found it. Just something to be aware of- since Basket of Fire is a hybrid variety, the plants you grow from the seeds won't be the same as the parent plant- but you may get some really cool variations! I didn't realize deer don't eat nasturtium's- that is interesting!

    A pleasant surprise from my plot last year was a Santa Fe pepper from Johnny's called "Havasu." They have the heat of a jalapeno, but they're slightly bigger/fatter and thick-walled. I was picking yellow ones in early July, and they mature to orange, and then red. Beautiful fruits and insanely productive. Perfect for fermented or pickled pepper rings. Great video once again, I'm totally hooked :) -Eric

    I start my cucumber fairly early in Central PA and grow them on plastic and cover with perforated plastic, which they love the heat and I keep them cover until they are a foot or two long and then I pull the plastic and put landscape fabric on both sides and let them sprawl. When they are tunneled, they are free of beetles, so the plants get strong and healthy and I believe I harvest longer before the striped beetle ruin them or blight.

    You've mentioned emerald towers basil before and I've found a seed supplier here in the UK that sells the seed so I will definitely be trying it this year! Also nice to see a grower across the pond growing runner beans; they are an absolute staple over here, and I don't think there are many allotment gardens or home vegetable patches that don't grow them! They're beautiful and delicious, and are also good as dried beans!

    Great Job as always! Really enjoy the series and all the information and wisdom. We live in Greenville, SC - zone 8 - and heat tolerant plants are a must. Many market gardeners here are taking off the summers (August\part of Sept) and focusing on winter planting. Varieties that work for us are Lettuce - Cherokee and Muir from Johnnys - we can grow all summer but come july the shade cloth comes out to help protect them. Tomatoes we do Cherokee Purple Heirloom and with watermelons, the Georgia Rattlesnake does well. Cant wait for next video. Be safe and GOD bless!

    I see you seem to be having as much trouble as me with cucumber beetles. I went years without a problem and even was able to plant in the same place but they have really settled into my garden now and suddenly it's difficult for me to grow a good cuc crop. Have you ever tried the cucumber beetle sticky traps? I might give them a try next year even though pricy and also going to plant them in a different spot.

    • @GrowfullywithJenna
      @GrowfullywithJenna  2 роки тому +1

      Unfortunately, in my experience, once they find a location with cucurbits growing they come back every year. Those traps are a bit of a pet peeve of mine- I feel like gardening companies aren’t exactly marketing those truthfully. Those traps are meant for monitoring- you set them out and once so many adult beetles are caught (it’s usually something like 3 per trap), you start your spray program- whether that’s with conventional or organic treatments. They don’t really protect plants. Sorry for the rant! Planting in a different spot is a good idea, and if your are able, cover the plants with insect netting till they start blooming.

      For all my tiny hot peppers like this, I usually end up pickling them whole. Then I can either mince them up and use in recipes as I need them- or I take a blender to the whole jar and end up with a hot pepper 'paste' of sorts.

    I'm in 6a too, central Ohio, I picked up some Purple Vikings taters because of your last video and now I'm thinking "I have these cucumber seeds but should I get super Max instead?" Thanks for the great info!

      Great to hear from a fellow Ohioan! I hope you like those spuds as much as I do!
      I realized too late that I'm probably just adding to a problem which most gardeners have- which is to 'get ALL THE SEEDS' 😆

    That Daphane sounds like one to try. I grew Beit Alpha last summer and it produced good eating cucumbers. We have a problem with lack of pollinators. Any squash you could recommend that doesn’t require pollinators? Thanks for making this video!

      I've not tested these myself, but you might find this study on parthenocarpy in summer squash from Cornell useful: www.hort.cornell.edu/expo/proceedings/2014/Vine%20crops/Seedless%20squash%20Reiners.pdf

    I love these! I tagged you in my IG post with my favorite tomato variety from last year. Emily basil always does great for me! How many bush bean plants do you plant for a family of 4? I don’t can so it’d be for eating during the summer only.

      Thanks, Renee! I appreciate you sharing your favorites! Regarding the beans- it's so variable from person to person, but I planted a 30' row last year and that was enough for fresh eating only for our family of 4 (kids don't eat many beans). The general recommendation I see is 10-15 plants per adult (that includes enough to preserve). So you could probably halve that amount if you're only using them fresh eating.

      Thanks. I've been having that problem (echoey/too much reverb) with my indoor videos- I tried fixing it in editing, but it doesn't help. I'm working on trying to find a different mic, maybe a lapel mic. Thank you for the feedback! I'm still learning, so this kind of feedback is helpful.
