  • The 2021 British Grand Prix isn't the only time there's been drama and controversy. In 1998, Michael Schumacher won the race in the pit lane, serving a penalty AFTER the race had finished.
    So how did he get away with it? This is how.

    Hakkinen almost blew it 1999. This is what happens when you have too much stuff to do and only a certain amount of hours in the day.

      I remember this clearly. I do also think due to this the start/finish line was moved a few hundred yards forward to stop this happening again. He

      Why are the timing lines so close after the final corner these days? I mean, on tracks like Sochi and Silverstone, you’ve barely wound the steering angle off as you complete the lap, it’s ridiculous, why don’t they use the start line?

    The old days of F1 are sooooooo weird in some points, but i love how "poorly" they acted back in the days...
    Race Control: "Ferrari, here is your penalty!" Ferrari: "Uhm, it dosnt say what we we should do?" RC: "Do something"
    Race Control to Hans Hayer: "You DNQ go Home!" Hans Hayer: "I start anyway" RC: "Hey there is the guy who DNQ, he is in the starting grid, ok let him start, but he counts as DNS ....maybe its unfair to other drivers, ok lets DSQ him....ah never mind his engine blew up, so we have to count a DNF.

      Your comment came a few races too early. F1 will continue to be weird for ever. I wonder if they are actually so genius as to be incompetent simply to promote the passion of their fans and public debate. Then I remember that they are human, and there for incompetent.

    I vividly remember the report ITV gave of the World Motorsport Council ruling that was announced before the German Grand Prix:
    "The World Motorsport Council met earlier this week to discuss the British Grand Prix. It was good news for Michael Schumacher who's win was declared official, but [it was] bad news for the 3 Stewards of the meeting who've now surrendered their licenses,"

      @SiVlog1989 3 роки тому +1

      @@michaelbrown297 there are two moments of Jim Rosenthal's time as lead presenter that stick in my mind.
      The introduction to the Saturday coverage of the 2000 British Grand Prix he gave, which remarked upon the shambolic decision (that nobody seemed to take responsibility for) to move the Grand Prix from July to April.
      "(...) and this is Silverstone, saturated, chilly and totally uninviting. That's the scenario for the qualifying hour. If you want to know why they've closed the car parks today, look no further. The Grand Prix is the single biggest sporting event in the British calendar. We normally come here in mid July, a time for barbecues, camping and T-shirts. But today, in what must be a virtually unprecedented act, the organisers are begging the public to stay away, so why are we here? No one is willing to take responsibility for switching the dates, the reasons have been lost in a cloud of Formula One mumbo jumbo, it's the fans who are suffering.
      "What an irony, next door to the quickest cars in the world just shifting your vehicle is a huge achievement. Visiting the Grand Prix this weekend is a big test of character. First of all, you've got to get past those police road blocks... Well those who are here just seem to be happy to be here. They've come by bus and many have walked a long way on foot."
      The second was introducing the "highlights" show from the 2005 US Grand Prix:
      "We have been embarrassed by what's happened here at Indianapolis this weekend. Formula One has scored a massive own goal, you wonder if the sport will ever recover in the USA... We've had a farce here, the problems started on Friday morning. Ralf Schumacher's Toyota cause the smash, in virtually an action replay of his crash here last year. Ralf forced to miss the race on Doctor's orders...
      "The chicane the nine teams had asked for failed to materialise, so every except for Ferrari, Jordan and Minardi pulled into their garages... We had a farcical six car race at the Racing Capital of the World!"

    Speaking of penalties. I just watched the 2004 US GP again. Montoya stalled on the opening lap and then changed to the spare car. He was disqualified for that during the race. But the disqualification was only announced more than 50 laps after the offence. Were the rules changed in the meantime so that those responsible could take their time, or what was going on?

    Depending on the series, the rules state that the pit lane does not count as part of the track. i.e. In IMSA, driver time spent in the pit lane doesn't count towards driver's minimum drive time because it's not on track. Or as mentioned elsewhere in the comments, Audi's passing the safety car in the pit lane due the pass not happening on track. By that reading, Michael could not have won the race because he wasn't on the track when he crossed the timing line. On the other hand, this was an era in F1 that seemed to have a different rule book at every race.

      @@mehmetcetin9570 Because the Safety Car was going slower than the pit lane speed limit down the main straight after Lotterer shoved Da Costa into the wall, Audi sent Di Grassi though the pits from eighth to get ahead of the safety car queue. The rules state that if you come into the pit lane during the safety car you have to stop. However, Di Grassi didn't quite stop. He emerged in the lead of the race and lead it until the end but he got given a drive through penalty that Audi didn't tell him about. He got black flagged for not serving it because Audi tried to argue that he stopped. The stewards ruled that he didn't so he got disqualified.

      @@mehmetcetin9570 Short version (came across this on the interwebs but didn't watch the race itself 😊): On this week's race (London 2021) there was a period with a safety car. One of the teams realized that, at the speed the safety car was lapping, their driver could win a massive amount of positions if he went through the pitlane and back out. However, their Pro Gamer move was foiled by the fact the driver failed to do a pit-stop (he did a drive-through), and was given a very harsh penalty (either a huge amount or time or a straight DSQ, can't remember which).

    Jeff Burton of NASCAR played this kind of game at the Winston All-Star Race in similar fashion. For this race they required a mandatory pitstop. TV and the teams all try to work out when was best to pit. With others, on your own, early, late, gas, 2 tires, 4 tires etc. His team had a plan of selecting a pit stall before the finish line on purpose but made no mention of it. In the race they snookered them by stopping on the last lap, doing the mandatory stop, then putting over the start finish line section that was in the pits not having an out lap getting up to speed as everyone else had. #smart -U10

    There is a race in NASCAR like this in the early 2000's in 2002 or 2003 with error that cost a driver Jeff Burton his win at Kansas Speedway where due to laws at the time no races could take place on Sunday and the track had no lights on it yet at the time so a race that should have started at 2:30 pm or 3:00 pm was starting at 4---4:15 pm due to weather and if starting earlier could have done about 1/4th race before this. Well then they called the race as it was getting dark as the rules at the time said if track has no lights and is not halfway it has to finish the next day, well next day was not a raceable day so they called it before halfway by 3 or 4 laps and a car that the engine died or gas ran out at the end got a push from Jeff Burton who was on race saying to crew chief, I have to push this Bleep car (Jimmy Spencer) first over the line just to finish and get my win was denied the win where rules stated and still do that a car must finish with its own power but they gave win to the car that was not under own power just because it came in first. A teammate to a driver in the 1980's very early on when multiple car teams began to be formed with then two team drivers, helped a driver to win on same team pushing them to victory after an engine blew up near the end of the race so they amended the rules. Well in this case it is clear that the other driver Jimmy Spencer who was in his final part time season with a contract next year to be a full time commentator should not have won the race but due to being a part time commentator in his first year of commentating it felt like Jimmy was given special treatment just to keep him as a commentator who nobody liked since his voice blended too much with the sound of the cars and was just barely able to understand to begin with in no sound due to his voice tone coupled with the southern USA accent.

    1999 or 1998 I forget was like that in NASCAR as well same deal with Jeff Gordon rainbow warier (Jeff Gordon had for 90% of career DuPont and the rainbow color scheme with one car actually call this) and Mark Martin the gentleman (he thought in his early years before NASCAR taking number 1 if available was too cocky and would often take number 2) both wining most of if not almost of the races. But what was fun was seeing the Veteran since early 1980's in 1983 or so for his first real full time and the newer competitor only 5 years into career battling as if one Era pre computer use and was not really using the tech yet with other starting in 1993 at the very beginning of computer use in NASCAR.
    This is true but it was fun to watch the two battle it out, it was not like one or the other except a few races was winning with the other in crap when one would win.

    A great explanation of how the stewards screwed up, allowing Schumacher's win to stand, but you actually failed to explain why Ferrari brought him into the Pit Lane knowing he would cross the start finish line before he could serve his penalty! 😞
    - Suggestions further down, say this is all about the fact that for a stop - go penalty the rules said you must enter the pits before crossing the start-finish line for the third time (it didn't say anything about actually serving the penalty before crossing the line!). Now, that's all well and good, but for Ferrari to have entered the pit lane, it had to be because they believe a stop-go was relevant, but I still can't see how they hoped to claim the win knowing they would conduct the stop-go beyond the Finish line. Had their pit been before the Finish line they would have saves themselves the time taken to exit the pits and get back to racing speed, which would have been an inspired decision, but as it stands, I still can't fathom their thinking in the actual moment!
    Perhaps they intended to argue that because they started the process of conducting the stop-go by entering the pit lane, Schumacher's race didn't actually end until the penalty was served, rather than when he crossed the Finish line? - Would need to know the rules they thought supported that, if that was the case...

      I'd assumed this would be what the video would be about... but there we go. It was because the rule said you must pit for a penalty BEFORE crossing the start/finish line 3 times, after the penalty was issued.
      What it did NOT say was that the penalty must actually BE served (completed); just that the car being penalised must enter the pits to serve it... so Ferrari (having read the rulebook...) noted that they could come in before crossing the S/F line 3 more times... ending the race, but complying with the requirement of the rules.
      Had they not pitted, they could have been disqualified... but they broke no rule.
      The rule was then immediately changed to note that it must be SERVED, and this is one reason why now we have post-race penalties, which were never actually used at the time.
      Cancelling the penalty altogether only happened months later, at the appeal hearing into McLaren's protest.

      @@OsellaSquadraCorse Thanks so much for this explanation - it's the bit I've always wanted to understand - and it's quite brilliant (though it does raise the question of why the team would go on to actually conduct the stop-go, if they knew at the time they only had to enter the pits!)
      - It would also appear you can't be right about post-race penalties not actually being used, if this video is right in claiming that's what the stewards issued. (Incorrectly because they issued it in the last 12 laps of the race, but it can only be issued if the offence is actually committed in the last 12 laps of the race, which it wasn't!)

    With Schumacher crossing the line +22 secs ahead of Hakkinen, it's unlikely he would still have won, as you stated, because you haven't factored in the time it would have taken Schumacher to enter the pitlane, and then leave the pit lane (at the regulated speed at all times); which along with the 10 second penalty, would have added approximately another 15+ seconds to his lap time. So i would suggest that at best; had Schumacher served the penalty on the penultimate lap, he would have been coming out of the pits on the final lap, either neck and neck with a flying Hakkinen, or a second or so behind him. I'm happy to be corrected on this, but from what i've learned from F1, entering, driving along and then exiting the pitlane and accelerating up to race speed usually adds 15-20 seconds to a lap time, depending on the track.

    • @str33tking43
      @str33tking43 Рік тому

      You're right, but this explanation (at 5:35) makes it clear that the stewards had actually issued a 10s penalty to be added after the race (even though they should have issued a Stop-go, so this is what confused Ferrari, and they were questioning). Hence the claim that if they had applied the penalty issued, Schumacher would still have won...

    That was Jean Todt doing what Jean Todt did best when he managed teams - create messy situations so he could cover his backside by pretending to be in "good faith".
    If they were sure about the 25 minutes limit being broken (as it was, according to all reports), the only reasonable and honest thing to do was to just finish the race normally and argue your case later - there was a clear irregularity in how the penalty was notified and it would've been an open and shut case.
    Thing is they weren't sure at all, so they fabricated two "last grasp" lines of defense in case things turned ugly: by having Schumacher come in at the end of the final lap they knew very well he'd cross the line before reaching the garages, but they could claim both that "they tried" - and that "it's not our fault the finish line is before the garages!". They took a muddy situation and made it muddier still, pretty much ensuring nothing could ever come out of it.

    So the driving in the pits had no effects. Because of the miscommunication it would have also be fine if he had finished on track without serving the penalty. Is the 12 laps rule still in place? If not would it be okay to serve a stop and go penalty on the last lap in the pits if the pit is before the start/finish line? This would reduce a ca. 30 seconds penalty (20s pitlane + 10s stop) to a 20 seconds penalty (only ca. 10s on pit entry + 10s stop + minimal time until start/finish line).

    • @OsellaSquadraCorse
      @OsellaSquadraCorse 3 роки тому +1

      No, if he hadn't pitted it would have been potential for disqualification for not entering the pits. There was a rule which covered entering the pits to serve a penalty within 3 laps, so that part had to be done. The rule however, did NOT say the penalty had to be completed, only that the driver must enter the pits to serve it; which they did. The 12 lap rule is no longer in place; much of those rules were changed as a result of this race, and others following the farcical 2008 season.

      He had to pit to serve the penalty within 3 laps of it being issued - you were not allowed to cross the start/finish line 3 times after it is issued: you must enter the pits within the 3 laps - those were the rules at the time.
      Now, Schumacher DID cross the S/F line, but HAD already entered the pits to serve the penalty, thus complied with the rules as they were written (nothing to say the penalty had to be completed, only that the car must enter the pits...) therefore no DQ.
      Smart thinking from Ferrari. Not their fault that their pit box was after the S/F line, and thus the race was over...

      The most ridiculous thing about it was that it was the same error the (useless) Silverstone stewards made in 1994, not giving Benetton a penalty within the required timeframe for a stop/go; leading to the scenario where Benetton sold Schumacher to ignore the stop/go board and stay out, as the penalty was issued wrongly then too! (Notwithstanding the fact it should never have been a penalty in the first place...very dodgy stewarding in those days all round, as there was no set panel, just a bunch of locals who frequently played favourites with home drivers...)
      When it got repeated in 1998, same delay, same errors, same confusion; Ferrari (and of course, Brawn had been on the pit wall for both Ferrari and Benetton!) immediately knew things were done wrong and they could take advantage; just as teams do nowadays with cutting corners or passing off-track to make up more than the 5 sec they know they will be penalised.
