This whole song has really grown on me over the years, and I’m hooked on it now. Hard to imagine it with any of the components removed or altered, they all seem foundational. Like the best of Yes, there doesn’t seem to be a note wasted, a note just sitting there not earning its keep.
The drumming is simple and such fun to play. That’s what, in part, makes it for me. The triangle on the ‘and’ of the third beat of the bar of the groove that starts at 0’43” is cute though. At 0’45” you can see a camera taped to the right stick. It malfunctioned after a few seconds’ use at 1’09” and gave up the ghost. Nice try of the director trying to get a drum stick’s eye view of the proceedings, which, from a drum stick’s point of view, were relatively calm at that point in the song, but, alas, doomed to failure.
I was given a writing credit for a handful of chords and a sliver of melody at 3.45 repeated at 5.06 and again at 8.11 which helped things along. Love the general feel of the 3/4 passage starting at 6.47. I don’t know why a medium slow 3/4 is not used more in popular music: you don’t hear it around much these days.
No small attraction of playing this tour in the first place was because I got to play a lot of music from Fragile and Close to the Edge for the first time since I recorded them about 17 years previously, so that was a buzz. Plus I was able to get behind the newer material from the ABWH album, such as Birthright and In the Big Dream. I’m sure we’ll be adding more videos from this concert to my Channel, so stay tuned for that.

It's entirely true that this song got better and better over the years, to the point where when the band played it live, you could look around and see people crying and in a state of rapture. Yes at their best moments really had this monumental spiritual atmosphere to their music, and this song is an excellent example of that. I've seen audiences react at Yes concerts in a way that I've never seen at any other rock concert. That's really something.
Beautifully said. I still feel this way watching videos or just listening to the songs. Still get tears, goosebumps and chills.
I saw it twice in 1998. With Khoroschev and Squire. Professor Howe played flawlessly like he did here. Exquisite. Anyway the second time (both times were at Hammersmith Odeon) they really milked the middle section. Played a little slower and there was that sense of rapture right at that point. We were soaked in that music. Both times.
It is true that "Close to the Edge" is a phenomenal piece of music, and I've had some magic moments with it BUT I've always preferred "And You and I:" "There will be no mutant enemy we shall certify/political aims as sad remains shall die/Reach out as forward tastes begin to enter you."

Since 1973 Yes is still one of my 3 favorite bands.
1972, I was familiar with Yes only to the extent of hearing Roundabout on FM radio. 16 years old when my older brother, all of 17, was planning a trip to the twin cities in September to see Yes. He encouraged me to go with him and 5 other guys. We made the 5 hour trip, even getting stopped by state highway patrol after hitting what appeared to be a large TV still in the box. I believe the show was in the Armory in downtown St Paul, not a large place, but typical of many auditoriums at the time. Open seating, tickets were $5. We chose to sit in the first row of balcony seats, a bit down from the stage so we could see the members. Gentle Giant opened the show. At the time, we all had a little familiarity with their sound, but for me, I only knew I had heard them on FM radio. The following band was the Eagles, touring to support “Take It Easy”, “Witchy Woman” and other hits from their first commercially successful album. Like probably everyone in attendance, we were imbibing “herbal cigarettes” as Craig Ferguson referred to them, and one of the guys had some wine. The lights dimmed, then the opening sounds of birds and I guess just nature in general started filling the auditorium. I leaned over the balcony ledge, intently watching and listening as Yes opened with Siberian Khatru. It couldn’t have been longer than the first line of the song when I found myself standing at the edge of the stage, even leaning on it. The volume was beyond loud, but it was perfect. Yes was touring to promote “Close To The Edge”, released just 10 days before this concert. I had been playing drums on a kit for only 6 years, but had started to become bored until I was exposed to Yes live. Though Alan White was playing that night, I had no clue who any of the members were. The next day, my brother and I spent the entire day listening to The Yes Album, Fragile and Close To The Edge. I believed I had watched Bill Bruford playing the night before, not realizing it wasn’t until Yessongs was released in spring, 1973. That didn’t alter my newfound obsession to master the drums like Bill Bruford. Now, at age 66, I can say I’ve been able to replicate the patterns during my practice sessions, and when younger, the speed, albeit, using incorrect patterns as there was no internet to dig into to discover exactly what the patterns were. Everyone of us, to this day say it was a life altering concert. That sounds trite, maybe immature, but it changed mine and my older brother’s. He died on September 14, 2016. I was the first to speak at his funeral, and though we were/are both born again Christians, I had the opening of “And You And I” played, fading out just before the vocals. Now, anytime I hear Steve Howe’s opening of the song, I’m filled with both joy and sadness over the loss of my brother. He was my greatest supporter in my drumming, and there was never any question about his talents as a guitarist. He taught both classical and jazz, but could play anything. Man, that was quite the story. How is your relationship day to day with God? I mean patterns is what He does. And with those music. I try to find joy in the state if current worship music but it's extremely difficult. I keep being reminded, it's for Him, not you. But some thing inside always tells me, this can be so much better. This sounds I am hearing as I type this is part of that memory.
Remember that Anderson is a new age guy and with that came terrible terrible deception, which are in his lyrics. Sadly .Check Doreen virtue who used to play in one of those zepparella bands and was a top tier new age author.
@@einarabelc5I don't worry about Anderson's lyrics. I always treat them as beat poetry and basically word sounds.

Regarding lyrics, I hear the vocal melody but never "assigned" any spiritual meaning. Iironically, Jon Anderson recorded vocals with "4 HIM" a contemporary Christian group, and I seriously prayed for Anderson.
I was familiar to Yes, in 2011, i was 14y old. I'been fascinating on their sound, i'm wondered listening Steve Howe. Its my first time playing this piece complete on acoustic, what a trip!
Fantastic. I must say that Chris Squire’s absence is huge. Both his playing and his vocals - no one else could fill his boots.
Bill Bruford the Master of syncopation. What a wonderful rendition of complex music with Live Studio Quality by a cadre of the most talented rock musicians of this age. A Blessing.
That 12 string intro is haunting, ethereal, and just is a great spice to the song.

One of my favorite Yes songs. There are so many! I was blessed to see ABWH in September 1989 in Sacramento CA.
Close to the Edge is the most important album in my life because it showed me what music could be; different than eveyone else. Yes was different than all other rocks bands and everything on the radio.
I purchased my first copy on vinyl when I was 14, and then a second copy and then two more on CD. I know every song like the back of my hand. I am so grateful for this song and the album.
I was on vacation that week so I followed the band up the California coastline--San Diego, LA, and then Mountain View. I loved those concerts and that tour! Some of my absolute best memories listening to Yes music.
Props to Milton McDonald for the backing vocals & guitar, Julian on keyboards, and of course Jeff on bass.
Yes at their peak: Anderson, Howe, Bruford, Squire, Wakeman. The quintessential quintet. 🙂

Tony Levin played on the LP but fell ill during the tour and Jeff Berlin stepped in. They both are great but it always made me sad when Chris wasn't on stage.
I discovered the music of Yes (and Genesis) with my cousin in 1991. Union was the newest album and the ABWH album was still pretty new. We also had that compilation called Yesstory. We loved it all. We were in a totally different world. The old stuff the new stuff...everything. We had no idea who was in the band or what was going on behind the scenes of the Union album. We were like 14-15 years old, and nobody around us listened to this kind of music. We were freaks. It was amazing.
An absolute classic and my personal favourite and one of the first songs I heard from Yes.
The 12 string intro was enough to turn me into a fan. Those halcyon days from the 70's are with me again. ❤

I was sad that Tony Levin was out sick for this show, but Jeff Berlin played very well and the Drum and Bass parts of Heart of the Sunrise were wonderful. Now I'll watch that video too.

One of the most sublime rock compositions ever recorded and performed live. I had the privilege to see the Close to The Edge era live and I have yet to hear a better rock opus.

An absolute classic. And so lovely to hear Bill talk up both 70s and 80s YES material at the same time. As an occasional drummer for our local church I also enjoy the triangle! And this was one of my Dad's fave YES songs. I think it was the upward whooping on the slide guitar that did it for him. That and the glorious moog bits that bookend Rick Wakemans contribution.
My favorite Yes song. Just a beautiful composition. I've grown old with these guys and loved every minute.
ABWH brought back 4 of the 5 from my favourite lineup. I never saw Bruford play this live until 1989. ABWH was a gift!!!

I saw this tour when you came to the Spectrum in Philadelphia, August 1989. One of the best concerts I've been to and the ABWH album itself remains one of my all time favorite albums. "The Order of the Universe" is in my Top 5 favorite songs!

I have been a fan of yours since I first heard your drumming and incredible snare placement on the early YES material. And from every other musical adventure that you journeyed into with King Crimson, live Genesis, UK, and your brilliant solo albums with the incredible Bruford band, I had the privilege of seeing you many times with the 80's and 90's Crimson, Earthworks and the Yes Union tour, where I was honoured that I was able to meet Rick, Tony & Alan, (although, I would have preferred meeting yourself, Steve, Chris and Jon)
I own all of the Yes, King Crimson, Genesis, UK, Bruford, ANWH, & Earthworks music which you appear on, which massively affected my musicality and who I am today as a human being.
I would be remiss if I did not mention some of your drumming on other albums which were a massive influence on my life and musical development, such as:

I love Bill’s drumming style he makes it look so effortless even though he’s playing some really complex rhythms … it’s a sign of a true virtuoso … I wish Bill had done more records with Yes, he was my favourite Yes drummer just because he bought some jazz influenced elements to the music which I thought complimented the music so well …. Also when you look at that line up on stage it’s just an incredible amount of talent …. Surely one of the greats.
I remember playing this song for my girlfriend of five years from early High School, to a few years out. I was not versed in the art of telling a girl I loved her, and was hoping this song would convey to her, some hint of my deep love for her. Well, apparently, it went right over her head. By the October of 1973 she dropped me like a sack of potatoes! No advanced warning. Saw her once when her Mom passed away in the late 70's, and no contact of any substance for the last 50 years. Breaking up wasn't the problem, it was not being friends after a six year, of what I thought, was an honest relationship/friendship. In the immortal words of Bel, Biv Devoe, "Never trust a big butt and a smile"! Tru dat! LOL! (But just a great song and lp!)

CTTE is the single greatest work of prog there is. To hear this played with Bill back on percussion is so emotional.

This is a wonderful live version of this masterpiece. I saw ABWH in Stockholm back in -89. Their show had an huge impact on me both as a musician and also on an personal aspect as it helped me through a hard time in life.

I was there. The show in 77 in Oakland was the best for us, blew or minds, never forget it.
One of the few songs where a triangle plays such an important role. Without it, it would not be the same. Whenever I saw Alan playing it, I wondered what he had felt at that moment.

A couple of nicely placed cymbal hits are more impactful than a drum orchestration here. Nothing Yes did was demonstrably better either. Kind of a blessed tune

Roundabout and You and I are certainly my favorite's. It is also a pitty that Bill Brufford left the band in the beginning of Yes life because he is the Drumer who knows the reason of each beat in a song or piece.

I mean..... wow.... All of you - best musicians all there together... what a treat to read about your views on the this song and your experience. Rhythmic changes in a song, for me, give it a level of sophistication and use of music as a language. There was alot of this used in the 70s and some in the 80s... not much anymore. My brother and I were just talking about "where is the music like this" in these times now? Well, thank you for all of this great music and performances...

Prog Rock was definitely the pinnacle of R&R in my book and that song was also a pinnacle song played by one of the pinnacle bands. But why were they not called “Yes”?
I think it was because Chris Squire (who, for whatever reason, did not want to participate) owned the rights to the name "Yes" or perhaps otherwise had some degree of control over its use.

Thanks Bill for posting all this. I was drumming at the time Yes album came out and my favorite at that time was Carl Palmer. Then I saw Yes In Atlanta GA when you guys were opening for ELP. Super concert by two super groups, and it gave me a new favorite drummer. Thanks for all the years of great music.
People have been using this Bruford video to praise Yes -- preach it! But I've got to say that the video of KIng Crimson's 1982 concert at Frejus -- specifcally The Sheltering Sky, is amazing in the true sense of the word. Among other things it is proof positive that Bill is the genius everyone says he is.

I witnessed And You and I at the Greek in LA in 89. I couldn't actually fathom at the time that I lived in the very presence of this song, Close to the Edge and Heart of the Sunrise all played by Anderson, Bruford, Wakeman @ Howe, the actual creators. The only downside was no Chris. On the other hand, the thing about the closeup shots in the video is this: despite all those diamonds on Jon's costume he isn't exactly a rhinestone cowboy:) But the treble clef reminds me of Elvis, Tennessee and the whole country thing which, when juxtaposed with YES has an unusual and interesting contrast about it.

To me, the REAL Yes. Bruford's touch lightens the tone of the entire band. Jeff Berlin had three days, I think, to learn the setlist, and jumped right in due to Tony Levin's illness. It's a pity the spotlights were reserved only for ABWH.

In my opinion, Bill Bruford and Chris Squire were the best rhythm section in the history of rock music. Yes, I know Squire didn’t tour with ABWH, but that doesn’t change the fact that they were unbeatable as a rhythm drum/bass duo.

Chris Squire was replaced by ... (who do you get to replace Chris Squire (circa 1988/89?) Tony Levin! (D'uh).

That's THREE preposterously talented bass players playing in one band (of a fashion). Good grief - you couldn't design something that spectacularly complex!
