I was totally unprepared for what happened, 9pm I was walking the dog along a well lit main road, a man on the other side of the road shouted somthing and came running fast at me, I had never seen him before, he was screaming at me, his face a inch from mine he was a big guy in his 30s I am 67 years old and 5 foot 6, he punched me in the head, luckily I was near a shop and managed to get in the shop he then disappeared, the one thing I learnt was violence can come out of the blue with no warning, now I am always looking around me for danger, it was a experience I will never forget.

Quite some time ago I practiced Ju Jitsu- Tai sabaki- moving your body with simple footwork is a major part of dealing with attacks- so you are not square on and are, ideally on the outside of the attacking limb (but it's not always possible so being inside the attack also has a place)- in many cases you would step towards the attacker but to their side. This also places them in a good position to be thrown. Even more years ago I'd done a handful of Aki-Jitsu classes and got into a street confrontation. The guy who attacked me threw a bunch of haymakers and, being inexperienced I just stood there with my arms up in a triangle blocking them until I decided to try a technique- I stepped forwards and to the side but ended up on the inside of his incoming arm- which didn't matter as I had my arm up which I then used to pull him into a headlock which he could not escape from! His mate was then trying to hit me but I was dragging the first guy around by his neck using his read end to fend off the attack! It must have looked quite funny on CCTV!

The one thing he told us to NEVER do, was throw a road works cone. He said there was always a chance that the road crew were on a tea break, and if someone throwing a cone was to disturb said tea break, all hell would break loose. The mantra was never to disturb a crew having a brew. Fatal mistake. Glad I listened to him. Steven, if you read this - you're the best.

This is a very important piece of advice. With camera's pretty much everywhere now, the police will almost undoubtedly find some CCTV or Ring doorbell footage etc that will show the incident. With you holding hands up in a 'please, I don't want any trouble' stance (it doesn't hurt to say it out loud too), it will be clear that the aggressor is the other person. That position is also basically a defensive fighting stance without appearing to be one, you're already in the position to fight and defend as needed.

Unless practiced well, most people's reaction to aggression is to freeze in fear, which is understandable but not helpful.

Usually when a bully confronts you like this it's because he believes he has superior strength, he believes you are weaker and so the last thing he expects is for you to take the initiative and strike first. The SAS use a shock and awe tactic. When they are outnumbered and out gunned they attack because that's not what the enemy is expecting. They think you'll run and are simply not prepared for you to turn around and attack. The person who strikes first always has the advantage, so make it count and don't necessarily go for the head. A well placed power strike in the solar plexus is just as effective and won't be expected

I worked in law enforcement for about ten years, and this is accurate.
However I learned a long time ago that throwing closed fist punches is not a great idea, it’ll work, but it will cause problems for the rest of your day, week or even month.
Something that I’ve done several times is throw a low kick at the about to be forward leg/knee.
It doesn’t have to be hard but it’s enough to cause them to have balance issues, you are then close enough for grappling.

For a trained individual this is good advice. I agree with some that you should have defensive hands raised and you should be giving commands to back off. But those defensive hands can become offensive if the person keeps coming. For the average untrained person who doesn’t know how to fight, also raised defensive hands but backing away with the intention of leaving fast and loud commands to back off. If you don’t know how to fight you need to leave fast if possible. Too many people will have normalcy bias and let someone walk right into their red zone space. Hands up and create distance and leave fast if you can’t fight. If you know how to fight, hands up, give commands, launch first strike if forced to do so no hesitation. Palm strike to nose, hard push kick to the stomach, while protecting your head. Stay safe out there with situational awareness by seeing your surroundings in public. but don’t overestimate your ability if you’ve never trained. And if you don’t train then maybe you should.

I used this years ago several times when I was threatened on building sites by my men. Instead of running away as expected I advanced & often it put the bloke off as he expected something different. He would stop & I could calm the situation.
I picked up the idea from an SAS officer who said that if a small group was caught & outnumbered instead of retreat they were trained to advance, knowing that if they tried to retreat they would lose anyway. Sometimes that tactic threw the enemy into disarray because they did not expect it & the SAS group managed to survive.

Put your hands up in a Self Defensive frame.
This way, you can, if anyone is filming you with their cell phone,
you can say that you didn't want to fight.
Nowadays cameras are EVERYWHERE, even if you think they're not.
And if you land in court, taking the first punch may still land you in jail.
If the other guy has a good lawyer, his lawyer will be able to show
that you used EXCESSIVE VIOLENCE even if it was supposedly defending yourself.
Cops really aren't great at sorting out who the "bad guy" is,

Usually the aggressor will try to instigate their victim to be the aggressive one in a altercation. Perfect situation for the "bully" or aggressor to play innocent or to be seen as the one defending. Make note of this, the aggressor will insult/ disrespect and say or do anything to make you look like the violent one. Have discretion who you choose to be around. Take heart for peace and truth.

@kaoskronostyche9939 nothing is effective against multiple determined attackers! Theres a diffrence between surviving and winning. When youre being attacked you only really need to disable your attacker. And look for tje opportunity to escape. You don't necessarily have to beat then to a bloody pulp. You don't have to "win." Getting out of the situation as unscathed as possible is winning. Also it is rare these days for an attacker to be alone. Usually theres multiple attackers and that changes things completely. But this video is good advice. I like it.

Morally however, I would push back on you. People who randomly assault others are vermin, their removal from society is not something to be mourned. Good people should not have to suffer their ill works. There is no advantage in them.
Keep in mind, I've been able to avoid fights my entire life by being good at talking down aggressive people, and I'm too weak to physically harm paint on a wall so I would never do this myself.
If someone wants to hurt me I essentially have an enforced pacifism of being unable to fight back. It is just that personally, I simply find them revolting.

Whether a person is in an empty handed situation or they have a n equalizer at hand, "awareness " ( just as you're advising ) is a persons first defense, especially while pumping gas, everyone knows you just want to get in & out & most folks are pre- occupied with the task as it's just an annoyance & where low life's like to hang out.

As someone who has practiced Judo for many years I find that I am mentally conditioned to get in close and reduce the distance as quickly as possible. Most people want to use their fists and punch but unless you are a trained boxer that is quite hard to do when your opponent is right on top of you. Even against bigger people i fancy my chances better when I am right in their faces where i can go for the eyes, nose, headbutt or just grapple.

Excellent analyses. The trouble comes when, if there are witnesses, it is shown that you were the initial aggressor. One must bear in mind that sometimes, an aggressor will feint to get you to make the first move. Of course, in the endless amounts of scenarios, remaining situationally aware is key. So many variables involved. Videos like this and others are so helpful. We do need to see more videos of the legal (or illegal) aspects of physical confrontations.

I think it’s all about the element of surprise. If you can feign innocence and weakness or an unwillingness to fight, then unleash your assault quickly and run away, that’s the ideal outcome. Real life fights aren’t like in the movies, it’s not choreographed and it’s faster in real life. Not to mention the adrenaline will cripple a lot of people. I remember at school when fights broke out, some guys were just naturally good fighters that put adrenaline to good use, whilst others literally broke down crying and collapsed in a heap because it was too intense for them.
