Original Vader was suppose to say "No Obi Wan Killed your father" but they kept it in secret only the director, editor, Mark Hamill, and James Earl Jones knew about it, nobody else in the cast knew so even in the premier the cast itself was left shocked. The first time I saw this film at age 11, I cried at the moment Luke screamed “NO” because I was right there with him; I shared his despair at this horrifying news. Obi-Wan and Yoda talked about how great Luke’s father used to be, Luke’s whole motive for becoming a Jedi was his father’s apparent heroism and martyrdom at the hands of Darth Vader … and this reveal just shattered everything, for Luke and for me. A moment I will never forget.
c'mon, one of the worst movie scenes I've seen, it is just bad, I never liked star wars and mainly because its cartoon really doesn't qualify to be taken seriously.
That was some damn fine acting from Mark Hamill once Vader dropped "I am your father" line. Luke knew the moment Vader said it that it was true, but it's so horrible he doesn't want to believe it. Hamill's facial expressions really drive all of that home. Luke indeed *knows* it to be true.

The kid got some stick at the time, but I always thought he did well with a very difficult role, so central to the first trilogy. Unconvincing backstory (possibly intentionally), clunky lines, weird relationship with Leia, strange mixture of all-knowing superhero and naive teen. Hamill found it difficult to get work afterwards, he was too famous. He didn't get "Amadeus" because Milos Forman didn't want Luke Skywalker playing Mozart.

All this time, i used to remember vader said “no, i am your father” in his usual dark, menacing and intimidating voice.. but i just recently rewatched this movie again, and i realized that the way he said “no, i am your fater”, it sounds very soft and gentle like he actually really is loves and cares for his son, and also sounded really sad and full of regret..
The reason for that is ‘No, I am your father’ sound odd without the context given by the rest of the dialogue as Vader is saying it a response to what Luke said. ‘Luke, I am your father’ makes more sense on its own so our brains naturally remember it like that

Well, they both had just been told extremely shocking and life changing news about their families. Vader learning the family he tried so hard to save with Padme was lost because of himself, and Luke's mental image of his father as a heroic jedi betrayed by the ultimate evil being shattered when he learns that the monster he's fought for so long actually IS his father. Both are pretty fair reactions.
For those who have not experienced this the first time or already knew that Vader is Luke's father, this plot twist is really significant for Luke's character development because up to this point, Luke believed that Vader killed his father, and after he killed Obi-Wan as well, he was hell-bent on killing Vader. However, now that Vader is revealed as his father, there's now a sudden conflict within him. He's now torn between killing his father and avenge Obi-Wan, or saving him and return him to the Light, which is considered impossible by everyone, including Vader himself. His inital hatred later turns into pity by the end of the movie, and he eventually made a resolve to save his father. This scene also humbles and matures him, and made him into the gigachad we knew and love in Return of the Jedi.

That was some damn fine acting from Mark Hamill once Vader dropped "I am your father" line.
Luke knew the moment Vader said it that it was true, but it's so horrible he doesn't want to believe it. Hamill's facial expressions really drive all of that home.

Absolutely true. And I love the almost blank deer in the headlights stare he gives Vader as he decides to let go and meet his fate falling down the shaft versus joining him. Wonderful acting!
The kid got some stick at the time, but I always thought he did well with a very difficult role, so central to the first trilogy. Unconvincing backstory (possibly intentionally), clunky lines, weird relationship with Leia, strange mixture of all-knowing superhero and naive teen. Hamill found it difficult to get work afterwards, he was too famous. He didn't get "Amadeus" because Milos Forman didn't want Luke Skywalker playing Mozart.

Well, they both had just been told extremely shocking and life changing news about their families. Vader learning the family he tried so hard to save with Padme was lost because of himself, and Luke's mental image of his father as a heroic jedi betrayed by the ultimate evil being shattered when he learns that the monster he's fought for so long actually IS his father. Both are pretty fair reactions.

For those who have not experienced this the first time or already knew that Vader is Luke's father, this plot twist is really significant for Luke's character development because up to this point, Luke believed that Vader killed his father, and after he killed Obi-Wan as well, he was hell-bent on killing Vader. However, now that Vader is revealed as his father, there's now a sudden conflict within him. He's now torn between killing his father and avenge Obi-Wan, or saving him and return him to the Light, which is considered impossible by everyone, including Vader himself. His inital hatred later turns into pity by the end of the movie, and he eventually made a resolve to save his father. This scene also humbles and matures him, and made him into the gigachad we knew and love in Return of the Jedi.
Part of it too is that he wants to hurt or disable Vader from killing Han & Leia

May 1980 I watched this aged 10, all the kids shouted "he,s lying luke don't believe him", I have never seen a cinema audience react that way in the next 42 years , breathtaking film making , I feel honoured to have witnessed it ❤️
