Hey all! Thanks for the amazing feedback and kind words. You guys have no idea how much it means :) Some thoughts: 1) Sequel + Twitter I'll be writing a sequel to this soon and will post updates on Twitter: twitter.com/williamyao_. I don't love the app, but until I hit 1000 subs on UA-cam, there's no way for me to communicate with you all beyond uploading new videos. So I'll use Twitter for text updates. 2) Missing countries Many of you were sad to see that your country wasn't represented. This is inevitable for a 5 minute mashup, but the good news is that I will try my best to include in the sequel every country mentioned in the comments. And just to set expectations - I saw comments suggesting that I mash up all ~200 countries in the world. While I would love to, realistically I can only fit 50-60 anthems per video... I would also add that you can probably fit 100+ anthems if you play only short snippets, but I think this impacts their musical enjoyability. France/Indonesia are repeated so often here because I'm trying to establish them as main themes and give this mashup some structure. 3) France-Algeria, other unfortunate combinations Oops... I knew that Algeria was formerly a French colony but didn't know how destructive their war for independence or how their relations work today. There are also other such situations in the video. I can't promise these awkward moments will be completely filtered in the sequel, but I will certainly consider them more carefully. 4) Editing software, sheet music, other behind the scenes stuff I use Premiere for the video and MuseScore for notation. For sheet music, I'm still deciding how I want to format and distribute it. Other than that, I'm planning on producing a short tutorial video where I discuss the writing/editing process and any tips-and-tricks. >>> If you want to see your country in the sequel, post it in a comment and I'll try my best! And subscribe to stay tuned for more content :)
fun fact: The melody of the French anthem that goes “Allons enfants de la patrie” literally inspired the Philippine anthem’s “Aming ligaya na pag-“. It was added by the Philippine anthem’s composer Julián Felipe to show solidarity with the world’s many revolutions against tyranny.
Speaking of anthems that work well together, Colombia and Russia's anthems almost sound the same, any explanation for that or is it just a coincidence?
That's strange because France's National Anthem was probably the first National Anthem ever made, so maybe it was the other way around? Edit: I read it as 'inspired by' instead of inspired, my mistake
To anyone who was wondering, the anthem from 4:37 - 4:51 is called "The Maple Leaf Forever" which was an unofficial former National Anthem of Canada used between 1867 - 1980

Same for France and Algeria, who've never ceased to hate each other since the Guerre d'Algérie (1956-1962) and yet their anthems always accompany each other here.
For the Chilean version, in soccer matches they always try to shorten our anthem by enfing the instrumental sooner, but the team ans the chineal public sings the rest anyways. Since this version uses the last bit of the Chilean anthem, you can perfectly use that.
Americans wrote patriotic lyrics to God Save the Queen and the tune of Star Spangled Banner is an English song so I can see how theyd play well together
@@Lazymotion Not exactly; the official anthem until "O Canada" was adopted was "God Save the Queen/King"; "The Maple Leaf Forever" is just a patriotic song.

I am not chilean or brazilian, but I could never have thought of a better way to finish this off than the ends of the chilean and brazilian anthems mixed together. Amazing work!
This sounds amazing! I’d also like to point out that whenever France’s anthem played, it was almost always alongside a country that has historically been under French influence (Algeria, Belgium, Andorra, Cameroon, Djibouti, etc.)
I noticed this while writing too. Personally all of those except for Djibouti definitely "feel" French without also feeling like any other European anthem I used here. As for Djibouti, it's written in a major pentatonic scale which I associate more strongly with East Asia, but I'm happy it somehow still fit into the chorus.
I can tell you one of the times it wasn't (PH) it was because the composer of the anthem (and TBH the country as a whole) was heavily inspired by the french revolution at the time.

Have never heard so many anthems and sat through. Very captivating! My favourite part is 1:55 onwards. The Afghanistan anthem reminds me of video game music and how the melody turned sadder when Israel and Morocco's anthems entered. Beautiful work.
From a patriotic Canadian, I sincerely appreciate the use of 'The Maple Leaf Forever' with the old Red Ensign for Canada's second appearance. God save our Queen, and Heaven bless the maple leaf forever!
lol I got a kick outta that too. When I got to that part I was like "oh I didn't know the author was canadian" (cuz obviously nobody else would think to put it in there)
Clever moment pairing UK and US together- since the UK anthem also has famous American lyrics, to Americans it sounds like a mashup of two well-known patriotic songs we grew up with: The Star Spangled Banner and My Country Tis of Thee!
It's funny that the Japan's Anthem(Lyric:Long live our emperor)go behind China's Anthem (Lyric:Stand up! People who don't want to be slaves!).😂 La Marseillaise is always a brilliant song to lead the melody with a rise up part. Germany and Russia have a rally awesome team work in this video. Good job!👍
But in reality, it's Chinese who are slaves of their communist government (and they don't even want to overthrow it), while Japanese are enjoying free life. Germany, unfortunately, still buys russian gas. Bloody rubles are probably more important for them than thousands of lives of innocent Ukrainians, Georgians, Chechens, Syrians and all other nations who were invaded by russia

Yup - it was Canada's old anthem and so as a Canadian, I thought it'd be fun to put in. The notes have our old flag too which adds to the easter egg. As for the Netherlands - deciding what combos sound good together is honestly a very random process. I'm of course sad to hear whenever people expect a country but don't see it - that being said, there are at least 3 comments about the Netherlands specifically so it'll definitely be in the sequel should I ever write it :)
@@WilliamYao You definitely should, it's not only beautiful, the Wilhelmus, as the Dutch anthem is called, dates back to 1572 and is the oldest national anthem in the world.... Check this one for Stan Kenton's immensely beautiful interpretation: ua-cam.com/video/rZst-VolOks/v-deo.html
@@naeljalani9631 French came first. Philippine came after, copying the French and adding more notes. I am a Filipino, myself which would explain my statement. It's a joke but I do genuinely love our anthem and personally think it's better than most anthems.
I feel like I've been waiting for someone to do this for an eternity! It came together a lot better than I would've expected. Although I think I've been waiting for so long that I was expecting an Antigua & Barbuda/Germany crossover and a Nauru/Canada one... but that's definitely just me. Not Canadian, but I see what you did there with Canada lol
I've just had a chance to relisten to those anthems again and... if they ever appear in a sequel, I'll know who to credit :) Thanks for the feedback! I hope your country showed up - do you mind sharing where you live if not?
The entire video I waited hoping for Chile to make a contribution to the score, and hearing that ending tune reminded me of the countless days I spent as a child celebrating dieciocho. This was a wonderful orchestration, bravo
Thanks for writing! I know a lot of Chileans were probably the most anxious as their anthems were the last to feature, but I hoped the strong ending made up for it. Can I ask what dieciocho is? Is it kind of like an 18th birthday?
Honestly I feel like there is a great metaphor to take in here. Independently our anthems are proud and beautiful. Just like our individual cultures. But when put together make something new, harmonious, and meaningful. I think it shows that independently we are strong, but together we are stronger. Shows the while humanity isn’t perfect. We are all proud and beautiful and this mix shows that we aren’t different. Just divided.
Playing the Philippine National Anthem after the French one fits for the music! Because the composer of the Philippine Anthem was actually inspired by the French and Spanish Anthem
Many Algerians live in France today and are also proud to be half French despite the dark history. The French government/army is responsible for the crime not the French people.
lmaoo I saw a comment on reddit saying that Hungary’s anthem is basically a plea to God to stop being invaded, and that clearly it didn’t work because they were invaded 5 more times since it was written. I’ll try to include Hungary in the sequel though.

Have never heard so many anthems and sat through. Very captivating! My favourite part is 1:55 onwards. The Afghanistan anthem reminds me of video game music and how the melody turned sadder when Israel and Morocco's anthems entered. Beautiful work.
This was beautiful! You've earned yourself a new sub. Glad you added the Philippine anthem too :)
Never knew Indonesia Raya can blend in with so many other national anthems, thank you for including our country! 🇮🇩
As a filipino who is patriotic for almost every single country that exists in this world. This is very epic.

From a patriotic Canadian, I sincerely appreciate the use of 'The Maple Leaf Forever' with the old Red Ensign for Canada's second appearance. God save our Queen, and Heaven bless the maple leaf forever!
lol I got a kick outta that too. When I got to that part I was like "oh I didn't know the author was canadian" (cuz obviously nobody else would think to put it in there)
Maple leaf the real anthem
Tbh it almost made me cry
2:57 Tysm for adding my country! The mashup is very good!! 💖🇮🇩
Btw, happy independence day Indonesia! 🇮🇩🇮🇩
This is called the Planet Anthem when the aliens will come
Clever moment pairing UK and US together- since the UK anthem also has famous American lyrics, to Americans it sounds like a mashup of two well-known patriotic songs we grew up with: The Star Spangled Banner and My Country Tis of Thee!
my country tis of the star spangled banner
As a Colombian, perfect implement of the most impactful part of our anthem. Really hard hitting.
0:22 Ah yes, my favourite note: brazil sharp
what about afghanistan natural
Amazing ngl@@fravonzonbonn
Fun fact!
Did you know that the French National anthem inspired some portions of the Philippine National anthem!!!
Also the China! The Musician of our Nation's Anthem had said he wanted to create the Chinese La Marseillaise. Vive la liberté !
its actually shown quite nicely here
The Maple Leaf Forever is so incredibly based. Thanks for including it!
Good job!👍
not funny didn't laugh
But in reality, it's Chinese who are slaves of their communist government (and they don't even want to overthrow it), while Japanese are enjoying free life.
Germany, unfortunately, still buys russian gas. Bloody rubles are probably more important for them than thousands of lives of innocent Ukrainians, Georgians, Chechens, Syrians and all other nations who were invaded by russia
Nepal's anthem also follows that of China.
i truly did not expect my country to pop up in here and so seamlessly as well, this is a really beautiful piece

What a metaphor for how we are divided yet create something unique and beautiful when we come together.

Was that a bit of Maple Leaf Forever in there? Also a little disappointed the Netherlands didn't make it, it's such a pretty anthem.
@@WilliamYao It's sad that Yugoslavia doesn't exist anymore - it would be funny to show how close its anthem was to the Polish one.
Philippine National Anthem: 0:08
French National Anthem: "That sounds just like me!"
Philippine National Anthem: "Yeah... but better"
isn’t it the opposite
@@naeljalani9631 French came first. Philippine came after, copying the French and adding more notes. I am a Filipino, myself which would explain my statement. It's a joke but I do genuinely love our anthem and personally think it's better than most anthems.

Peak of international unity is when France-Algeria, Russia-Germany, China-Japan and US-UK anthems work too well together.
This is actually scarily beautiful, très bien!
@@WilliamYaoyeah it is
4:37 didn't expect Dominion Of Canada to be there.

HOW DOES THIS SONGS FIT SO WELL HOW
Playing the Philippine National Anthem after the French one fits for the music!
Because the composer of the Philippine Anthem was actually inspired by the French and Spanish Anthem
It's almost symbolic.
Any anthem alone sounds great, but combined you can find true beauty.
MAPLE LEAF FOREVER IS SUPERIOR IN EVERY WAY THANK YOU FOR RECOGNIZING SUCH AN AMAZING SONG FROM A CANADIAN

legend says it that the hungarians are still waiting for their depressing ass anthem to appear in this song.
lmaoo I saw a comment on reddit saying that Hungary’s anthem is basically a plea to God to stop being invaded, and that clearly it didn’t work because they were invaded 5 more times since it was written. I’ll try to include Hungary in the sequel though.
How well the UK/USA as well as Germany/Russia anthems fit together really caught me off guard. Awesome video!
