For short duration grilling such as steaks, fish, chicken just buy a 4 to 6” inch smoke tube as they will still burn for a couple of hours and you wont waste so much wood pellets trying to fill it to the opening so you can light it. Also, just hit it with the flame for a good minute or so none stop and it wont go out.

I have a charbroil infared gas grill. I lay my wood chips right on the grill. I get a really good smokey flavor.
