  • I was curious why new players tended to stay away from the Thief in Guild wars 2, so I jumped in to see how it felt playing the core thief in tough endgame content! Here are my thoughts!

I got gw2 on release date by mail and it took me 12 years to get into this game.
Thief was the 9th and last profession left because the others just didn't give the Guild Wars 1 feeling I grew up with.
And made my thief with 0 expectation. I've done world completion in 150 hours and got all skills unlocked.
Thief is the only class I'll ever need and now with the spear 😍
      Straight up Oberyn style.

When I first played this game in 2014, I started with the Thief. Had no idea it was supposed to be that complex. Assassin is my go to class so I went with it. Enjoyed the hell out of it. Favorite part was that it depended less on repeating the same rotation over and over and more on reacting at the right time and using skills situationally instead of pressing buttons in the same order to maximize damage.
I remember the first time I went into PvP, I had no idea what I was doing. The sheer mobility and subterfuge was so much fun. For me its always been the most intuitive class to play. I can't recall the build but the weapon set I most favored was Sword/Pistol and Shortbow.
Super excited to try the Power Daredevil now.

@@CaffeinatedDad So far it is really fun. Even tho i am only Level 75 yet. But i really enjoy the playstyle. Usually when it comes to MMOs i play a Heavy Armor class that just sits in th emiddle of everything until everyone is dead. Opponent or ally. But this is way more engaging. I mean yea..the learning curve is pretty steep for me. but that is part of the fun i think.

@@CaffeinatedDadn other side of coin, thief class can afk solo anything and exploit sneak into any tower or keep in WvW and flip a keep solo without even contesting it (thanks to caltrops and dagger 5 with Shadow art traits... you go full viper gear, F1 > dagger 5 > Caltrop + dodges caltrops trait > repeat each 3 sec dagger 5 so you are always stealthed. So for Thief vs NPC who can't detect stealth or counter stealth = 1/10 scale. So only in sPvP and zerg fights (usually thief not a zerging class... is where you need to think).

New player to GW2. I have a months worth of xp in gw2. 14 years of wow XP as rogue & warlock .Tried necro (reaper) and thief (daredevil and deadeye) .. people tried to scare me off thief, with this "thief is the hardest and you'll be dead alot" I find myself alive, alot during meta events and in fractals i'm often the last man standing when things go sideways. D/D thief takes some time to adjust to, but it's dmg is huge when doing open world content. also thieves guild for elites and champions is king!

Speaking as someone with a warrior main, playing Thief was initially very painful, due to not just a decrease in direct survivability... but a literal absence of it. One second, dead.
But as soon as I got into playing the role, so to speak, and treated it as a game of tag with enemies - where the goal is to not be touched - I found that it clicked with me a lot more. Being able to wipe every condition on me, twice, via stealth... and having three stealth utilities equipped; much fun.
Even the group stealth thing can be highly effective as a support tool, but it does require that teammates understand that they're invisible. That they should not immediately attack something, but consider the stealth an opportunity to catch their breath and calculate.
The timing issue with the skills is taking a while to master though - Warrior abilities are INCREDIBLY sluggish. Due to a combination of the ability designs and their attack animations, coupled with inherent latency, the optimal technique for my warrior is to actually hold down the button until it fires, because that's the only way to ensure that it WILL fire.
But with thief? You have to touch-type with your action bar.
One thing I did observe - the action cam shines. Because it forces you to focus less on the broader aspects of the battle, less on specific targeting at range, and more on your own position and movement. And it seems like mastering your own basic movement is the absolute foundation of thief survival; your presence is inherently disruptive, so the primary focus should be on maintaining your own presence.
Speaking again as a warrior - there is nothing more confusing than encountering a well-played thief who makes their teammates vanish, forcing you to stand there blinking like an idiot, wondering if someone teleported or turned invis or disconnected or whut.

I've played thief since day 1 of Gw2, I love the dynamic nature of the play, you have to be aware as you said. I think there are too many Profesions that off lower risk for same rewards in PVE and also give out more supporting boons and why you see less of them. Even the "support spec" spectre is limited by a game that does splash boons so much that supporting a tethered target feels like extra work for the sake of it.
Off course in WvW and PvP when played well they are the punishers for the players that over extend in a flash a thief has you in a world of hurt. Yet I will continue to harber the thief close to my heart, especisally playing a little asuran thief the death blosssom with asuran is so yoda :D

Just checked 11,284 hrs on my main (plus maybe a couple hundred on a thief I made to run HoT well under leveled). I've got 1,946 hrs on a mesmer I use for map, HP, tour runs, and another maybe just shy of 1K on my other alts in total (I have each profession which I've boosted just to learn them for PvP and 12 mesmers parked around JPs and such for my map runs) My total in game is 15,886 over my 22 characters. I've been playing since before HoT but still this tells me I need a life lul. I've only leveled my main and another theif (level through HoT btw, yes stealth is important lul).
GW2 was my first game aside from Tetris and Battle Toads/Mario back in the day. I started just before HoT was released. I was so green I put in a ticket because my 'F' skill was just a black box (back then it was just a black box until you stole something) and I thought it was a glitch or broken. I started HoT through getting in to Auric Basin from
Guilded Hollow. No idea you had to start the story to get a glider, ran around straight up lvl 80 for about 3 wks just lvl 80 unlocking all the WPs and even did Dragon Stand 20 times before I got my glider. Just used to Tel to Friend for the last fight until I ran out then just went and got pod while the last fight raged. Well, 8 or so years later and I'm a pretty decent thief whose solo'd dungeons, HoT HP bosses, completed all the raid wings, hit plat in sPvP.... commanded hundreds of map runs and events from Orr to Silver Waste to HoT and PoF, tought Raiding....

Other day, had just got a thief to 80, core, had more HP than you have, full exotic, engaged with a core warrior who everyone was leaving alone. Got one-shotted. like...BAM dead. Bullshit. So I came running back and let him do that on camera few times in order to send it in. Then I noticed...someone on my wvw team laughed in say the first time it happened. I said something like yeah thanks for the help man...(he was playing soulbeast and just standing watching this guy). Now, the warrior could have been a developer. And I get beat sometimes, no big deal. Had a pretty good willbender who beat me pretty quickly in actual 1v1 duals before I went back to the same spot and beat her. No biggie. But this guy, on our server, was a troll. He starts talking about how bad I am, and I said yeah...nobody is THAT bad. Core warriors do not do 18k damage with one shot. Your buddy who you're talking to on discord...yeah tell him he's about to lose his account. See, awhile back while playing against Maguuma server, there was a hacker abusing people, and somebody on our team knew how to spot it and report it. She got a bunch of people to send in reports and...I've never seen that guy online again. So, this guy's buddy suddenly becomes defensive...oh well, I just beat him in a duel (soulbeast beats core warrior, bfd news at 11...) and I said, yeah because he let you, but he can't hide those one-shots. And Arenanet will see the time stamps of your mouthing off and his attacks, and well we'll see what happens. Haven't seen that guy since. IMAGINE THAT. My thief is now a deadeye, rifle/dd, loads of fun, have had moderate success with him. Oh and to be fair, while hackers do tend to gravitate to Maguuma, it's a very competitive server with a lot of excellent players. They have great comms and response times on defense--very frustrating to play against even without their hacked spawn camps.

I've just recently come back to the game after I stopped playing just after release all those years ago. The difference is almost startling and I'm often overwhelmed; your class guides have been incredibly helpful in learning the game from scratch.
I've since then taken an Elementalist all the way to level 80 and I’ve begun unlocking the Tempest line, had fun with the Necromancer, Mesmer, Ranger, Engineer and Thief.
I had most fun using a shortbow with a thief but didn't keep the character, now I switch between my Elementalist, Engineer and recently I rolled a new ranger and I’m having a lot of fun with duel axes even if they're not the best choice.
I hope one day to go back to a thief class for the deadeye elite spec or a mesmer for the virtuoso spec because both play styles appeal to me even if, again, they aren’t the best ones.

that is a good order to play classes if brand new to game . For someone who doesn't know the game ( like at ALL ) I'd even say ranger with bow/bear build .I know that might seem boring to oldtimers but you have to look at it from perspective of someone just trying out the game . Then thief, mesmer and - to a lesser extent - elementalist and engineer are not best choices . Ele and engineer have all those quite complex toolbelt skills ( and kits ) and attunements to master .That's a LOT to remember

Ah yes, the Thief. The first class I've ever played in this game (well, maybe. I can't remember accurately if it was the Thief or the Necromancer, since I remember those being my first two classes. Knowing myself and my love for Rogues in any game, it was probably the Thief).
First time I bounced off this game, the Thief plays like a Bloodborne meets Devil May Cry character, which should be basically my jam since I love those two games, but since my brain wasn't used to this game's combat system and its timings, I thought it was just clunky and quit.
Nowadays I know the basics, though I'm far from being anything remotely close to a veteran, and learning how to play with other classes has made me really appreciate the Thief, it's one of the classes I look forward the most to mastering, and although it overwhelmed me at first, I'm a fan of challenges so long as I can understand them, so now that I do, I look forward to this one.

I also caught myself only playing this thief in all contents for a while, just because it was fun, I got a double pistol build for open world, just annihilate everything. Recently I decided to try the real thief in pvp, the dagger/pistol daredevil and at first everyone is being very toxic to you no matter what you are doing, still happens, but now I mastered it and boy is it fun. I rarely die due to the mobility and invis, I kill easily players on low life and I even started to win the 1v1, mostly by being deceptive, making the opponent waste all their dodges and CDs and then just dishing out some big damage. Some times I even have a blast playing the short bow shooting at team fights or at enemies that is not so good to get close, they get really lost when they see you as a thief shooting arrows hahaha

Condi specter is a nice option to have now days, but I usually stick with my dbl bow condi DD. Dmg sucks (no shit) but it's not so terrible I'm literally timing out on champs. And hey! I CAN solo champs with it. Most importantly I like the feel. Thought I found my self-reliant open world sweet spot with this, I admit I don't use this toon for much more than Mad King Lab and the occasional errand.
I also gave Hizen's Condi pistol dagger DE build a try, and it was pretty cool, BUT, I did find myself screwing up that stab a lot, which Hizen himself even remarked on a follow up video. I have this and a decent specter build templated, but until I spend more time with them I usually stick with my technically much crappier build.

I'm a thief player in every game that offers the option (it also my class of choice to test a game). Because of the thief gameplay and the way it is played (jumping and dodging everywhere all the time) and the need to switch weapons, I played GW2 for a grand total of 10 levels on my first try 6 years ago... It took me 4 more years to try the game again (on another class) to click with it.
You think you looked at the thief as a new player, but a lot of the things you say are hard but ok (cleansing, weapon switching, HP management...) are in fact harder than you think. As for a new player they may be totally new concepts they have to learn in addition to just apply them

Thief played right can be pretty good, but you're right about them being extremely squishy. For leveling Sword/Pistol is simple with a pulsing 5 second blind, a good gap closer and a nice amount of damage. For elite specs Spectre is amazing in both solo and groups. Scepter/Pistol 3 is a backward blink with a high damage secondary skill.

I've played thief for over 10 years. I even started commanding on a daredevil in wvw.
I have several builds in every flavor but core tied and switch a lot depending on my mood or situation.
I recommend a build that heals from output damage and to start with daredevil for extra evades. This will give new players high sustainability and damage.
Once you learn that pay around with different weapon sets then move onto deadeye.
If you are a never the specter will feel very familiar and maybe a better start.
Sheet now is good but learning access right away is better. Axe/dagger will give you a shadow step. Axe/pistol #3 will not shadow step. Switch between those two offhands depending on your situation.
Staff is fantastic as your other until you understand the class. If you're in WvW use rifle to component the axe/pistol. Don't start axe/dagger in WvW if you're new, but use it later to lock down an enemy with a shadow step

I like to play my beloved "two-pistols-pew-pew" deadeye thief plus shortbow as the second weapon and with two variations in the deadeye traitline, one for normal combat and mobs, one for bosses or other heavy and longer fights. This thief offers a lot of fun, high increasing damage output, a fast pace, good survivability and to handle his skills is no rocket science. I`m often using berserker stats, but imo this build also works good with dragon`s or celestial stats plus traveller runes, by the way, the last combo is my preferred one for all of my classes especially when I'm playing solo in the open world. Most of the enemies on the maps are already dead before they can reach me because my thief kills them as fast as hell and often faster before some other players around have decided which weapons or skills they should use this time. In difficult and often longer fights against nasty foes, this build forces me to be more agile and is therefore very entertaining and never boring.

I’m coming up on a year in GW2, and thief is still my one and only character. I’m working on finishing up EoD and then will have 100% completed every map and all stories on thief.
As a new player, I actually found it very intuitive to play. In fact, the initiative system is the biggest appeal for me because being able to use any weapon skill without cooldown makes for very reactive gameplay instead of simply following the most optimal skill rotation like I see in other classes.
The difficulty ramp up from the core maps to HoT was eye-opening. I got wrecked at first, but the harder encounters really taught me how to play it well. With all that said, I’m starting to get bored with it. Constantly spamming dodge and evade is getting kinda old and I’m looking into making a Dragonhunter next because it seems to have a similar fast-paced play style.

Core thief since day one here. I swap to daredevil depending on the situation.
Best advice that I would give to anyone willing to try the class is that to be viable as a thief and able to carry situations you need to have - patience waiting for the right moments to be aggressive
    - Knowledge of other classes so you identify the moments when you should engage or not
-and good decision making skills as its not a class that you just spam and get kills. You gotta know when and what to use.
All in all its very rewarding in the end. Always a thief!

As a thief main there are some things that are a bit janky in a group pve setting.
Daredevil (both condi and power) require a lot of movement to do damage which can get you killed when a lot of encounters need close stacking.
Deadeye has a malice bug where in some maps you simply cannot see your malice because it decides to change color based on the map for some reason.
Even base thief mechanics can be difficult to grasp if you don’t understand the ability queue system. If you quickly tap a skill then you’ll most likely double up on the cast since thief abilities do not have cds. Not to mention hitting stealth attacks can be difficult for new people.
Open world can be rough due to being squishy and finding a balance between high damage and decent survivability although full cele condi is pretty unkillable but takes a bit to stack their damage up.

I use to play thief a lot then i took a break. Came back and then rev was new and played that. Stayed a rev main ever since. Rev is like thief imo but like 5x tankier and easier. Battle scares is just overpowered and keeps you alive through alot.

Believe it or not, The only class I played is Thief.
Switching from Daredevil Condi > Deadeye Dual Pistol.
Can't see myself playing any other class. 😅
Started playing GW2 this Feb 2023.
    600hrs of thief gametime.

I personally love D/D condi Daredevil. I enjoy killing things before they can kill me. Thief naturally has a high amount of dodge without Daredevil if it just uses D/D. Combine the 2, and you're invulnerable for a good % of any fight. I learned timing as I grew more comfortable with the class, but I never once felt weak. I never once felt squishy, at least, compared to other classes. Every class will die if a big boy headbutts you one too many times. Thief just has more learning to do for content, learning when enemies attack, and when to dodge in order to be most efficient with its unique playstyle.
Stealth? I never use it. There is something to be said about running in with your "chicken" spinning, teleporting next to an enemy, and pressing 5 buttons together for the highest condi-burst damage in the game. Besides, players just run out of my stealth, unstealthing themselves and giving the entire group pause as to whether they should keep running, or help the poor fool getting bumrushed by 20+ enemy elites as he slowly backs up with the sudden realization of what's going to happen to him. And yes, I am talking about Caudacus' Manor. Hilarious the first time, frustrating the 10th time.

Ironically enough, the Thief Build I enjoy the most is Dagger/Dagger Deadeye, there is just something satisfying about setting up your Ambush Attack and then chunking an Elite Mob to high Heavens and back, only for you to stealth and then repeat

Just a conquest pvp tip, when 1v1ing another thief to compete for a node, use your shortbow. Even tho it is a thief weapon it also counters thief very well.
Ele and thief both are high risk high reward.
Ele requires u to constantly be doing/using an ability or attune change.
Thief is more about using abilities in the right situations.
    Ele flows
    Thief calculates.

I played thief and it is very hard to survive, on most specs, probably easier on specter I guess.

The Elite specs bring more survivability than the core spec imo

When I started playing the game, Thief was the first character I got to 80. Though I attribute that to quickly land into probably the best to level up Thief which is going S/D and focusing into a power build (Critical Strikes being the first tree that I maxed out) so leveling in general felt super easy, just using "5" on top of enemies and watching them die while they're uncapable of landing any hit cuz of the AoE constantly pulsing Blind in an area, same with the "3" skill, Damage+CC+evasion, both "3" and "5" felt super strong for leveling and general open-world content. Sure champion and above enemies feel a bit difficult since you can't blind them and if you get hit, well you're wearing medium armor and your total HP is super low so each attack that manages to hit you will hurt and take a big chunk of your HP away, but everything else felt super good.

I really have to stress this because I see this so much in this community.
GW2 did not invent dodging in a video game.
Not every new player to GW2 never played a video game before...
